GOP Senator says a ‘sweet spot’ on bipartisan infrastructure deal is less than half of what Biden wants

  • Sen. Shelly Moore Capito said a “sweet spot” for a bipartisan infrastructure deal is less than half of what Biden wants.
  • “I would say probably into the $600 or $800 billion, but we haven’t put all of that together yet,” Capito told CNBC.
  • Other Republicans like Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy are signaling there’s an infrastructure plan being drafted.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said a middle ground between Democrats and Republicans on an infrastructure deal would be significantly less than half of the $2.3 trillion package that President Joe Biden seeks.

“I think the best way for us to do this is hit the sweet spot of where we agree and I think we can agree on a lot of the measures moving forward. How much? I would say probably into the $600 or $800 billion, but we haven’t put all of that together yet,” Capito told CNBC.

Capito laid out some potential revenue elements, including unused coronavirus relief funds, road usage fees for electric cars, and a vehicle miles-traveled tax. She also suggested raising the gas tax, a measure the Biden administration has already ruled out.

“It’s going to have to come from a lot of different sources, but this is important,” she said. Capito did not bring up lifting corporate taxes.

The West Virginia Republican later told Capitol Hill reporters there was a group were drafting a counterproposal, suggesting it would be sized somewhere between $600 billion to $800 billion. Capito was part of the Republican group that pitched a $618 billion counterproposal, which Biden along with Democrats ultimately rejected.

Other Republicans are signaling they are putting together a new package. Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday there is a bipartisan group of 20 lawmakers evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats drafting one.

Then Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said on Tuesday that a bipartisan group was assembling an “alternative” to the Biden plan. He indicated it would double the amount of spending on roads and bridges from the $115 billion that the president is seeking.

The Biden infrastructure plan includes major funding to fix roads and bridges and set up clean energy incentives. It also has federal funds for in-home elder care, public transit, and schools, among other areas.

Democrats are pressing to take advantage of the cheap cost of borrowing to fund new investments they say will curb inequality and grow the economy.

Republicans, however, are opposed to the Biden package, viewing it as a colossal liberal wish-list. Capito criticized the Biden proposal’s expansive scope, arguing it should be constrained to roads, bridges, airports, broadband, and water infrastructure.

“If we’re going to do this together, which we want to do and is our desire, we’ve got to find those areas and take away the extra infrastructure areas that the president put into his bill like home health aides and school building and all of these kinds of things,” she told CNBC.

Coinbase climbs 13% in trading debut as valuation hovers around $100 billion

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong

Shares of Coinbase climbed as much as 13% on Wednesday in its hotly anticipated trading debut on the Nasdaq.

The direct listing had a $250-per-share reference price, and opened at $381 before hitting an intraday high of $429.54, which was 13% above its opening price.

The $381-per-share opening price put Coinbase’s valuation at $99.5 billion, giving it a bigger market capitalization than such established US companies as General Motors, FedEx, and Gilead Sciences.

Coinbase is the first major cryptocurrency exchange to go public, and investors see its direct listing as a major milestone for bringing cryptocurrencies in the mainstream. Bitcoin hovered near an all-time high above $63,000 when trading commenced, having hit a record of $64,869.77 earlier in the day.

“We look at the Coinbase listing as an additional validation of the space, and a major PR opportunity for the entire industry to shine as the future of finance,” said Alex Mashinsky, CEO and co-founder of Celsius, a cryptocurrency yield-earning platform.

He added: “Coinbase has more users and more revenues than many of the largest Wall Street players and is more profitable than any major exchange, this validation puts most skeptics at a crossroads having to re-evaluate their denial and frustration with the disruption coming at them from all sides.”

Coinbase’s direct listing comes on the heels of its blowout first quarter earnings. The cryptocurrency exchange and brokerage revealed first quarter revenue grew 840% year-over-year to $1.8 billion, compared to the $1.3 billion for all of 2020.

The results led DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria to up his price target for COIN to $440 from $195 .Though other analysts caution that Coinbase has hefty competition.

David Trainer, New Constructs CEO, said in a stock research note that Coinbase’s $100 billion expected valuation implies that Coinbase will become the largest exchange in the world by revenue, which isn’t guaranteed given the existence of competitors like Gemini, Kraken, and Binance.

In the earnings report, the company warned that its financial results have fluctuated drastically on swings in crypto trading volume-something investors should keep an eye on, Trainer said.

“Trading volume, and therefore transaction revenue currently fluctuate, potentially materially, with Bitcoin price and crypto asset volatility. This revenue unpredictability, in turn, impacts our profitability on a quarter-to-quarter basis,” Coinbase acknowledged in its prospectus.

best airbnbs near wineries - Vineyard barn in Palisade wine country

  • Wineries are re-opening to the public, and they can be great destinations for a gourmet getaway.
  • We’ve paired wine regions from coast to coast with local Airbnb options.
  • From standard homes to yurts, we found Airbnbs near wineries ranging from $120 to $456 per night.

Anyone who’s ever visited a winery knows that it’s all-too-tempting to linger in those beautiful settings. So, why not stay? Find yourself a cozy base camp and spend a few days exploring the vineyards and tasting the local wines. Though many wineries initially switched to virtual tastings due to the pandemic, tasting rooms have reopened their doors with new precautions in place (more on that here).

There are currently 252 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) spread across the country, with 141 in California alone. So, there’s a good chance you live within an easy road trip of a grape-growing region. Though I’m no sommelier, I’ve been to enough tastings to know that staying right nearby is a serious perk.

Because these wine-producing areas have become such popular destinations, the crop of vacation rentals is growing as quickly as the vines. From charming cottages to mod guest houses with pools, converted barns to rustic log cabins, wine country Airbnbs offer plenty of personality.

FAQs

Are wineries safe to visit?

Wineries are in the process of re-opening, and many have put new safety protocols in place. Check with each winery for the latest details as you plan your visit. Many wineries are operating with reduced capacity, limited indoor seating, mask requirements (when not tasting wine), and enhanced cleaning measures. Some wineries are also requiring reservations and restricting the number of guests who can visit, so consult their websites and make reservations in advance if you can.

State and local COVID-19 restrictions will also impact how each winery is able to operate. Napa Valley, for example, is advising visitors to wear masks and practice social distancing. In general, expect limited interaction between customers and servers at tasting rooms, contactless ordering and payment, and even temperature checks before entering some wineries.

What’s the best time to visit a winery?

Keep in mind that vineyards are working farms, so they’ll be busy places during peak grape harvest season (roughly July to October, depending on the region). A winery (where wine is produced) may be separate from the actual vineyard, and a tasting room might also be separate from the growing operation.

Many are open year-round, but check with the winery for specifics on their schedule, including any vineyard tours and wine-tasting programs they may offer. If you’re hoping to have a chance to chat with a winemaker, you might want to choose a quieter time of year.

Keep in mind that finding available accommodation in high-demand areas during the peak summer and fall seasons can be a challenge, so book early to avoid disappointment.

What are the best wine regions in the US?

There are currently 252 established AVAs across the country, reflecting a wide range of growing conditions and geographic features in states you might expect (California, Washington, Oregon, New York), and those which might surprise you (Texas, Arizona, New Jersey, Wisconsin). In fact, the oldest AVA is actually in Missouri (the Augusta AVA, established in 1980, just a few months before Napa Valley). There’s a wine region for every taste, and that’s what makes them so much fun to explore on your way to finding your own personal favorite.

Washington State has 16 AVAs producing over 70 grape varieties. The Yakima Valley AVA is known for chardonnay, Riesling, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah.

Oregon‘s 19 AVAs grow nearly 100 grape varieties. The Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills AVA is known for its pinot noir and chardonnay; and the Yamhill-Carlton AVA specializes in pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot gris.

California has a whopping 141 AVAs, with over 100 varieties of grapes growing throughout the state. In Napa Valley, the Calistoga AVA is known for producing cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, petite sirah, charbono, and syrah. The Mount Veeder AVA specializes in cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, malbec, merlot, and syrah; and the St. Helena AVA is recognized for cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, zinfandel, and sauvignon blanc. You’ll find plenty of zinfandel and sauvignon blanc in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley AVA; and the Paso Robles AVA has built a reputation for cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, syrah, and chardonnay.

Texas has eight AVAs. The Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country AVA specializes in chardonnay, chenin blanc, merlot, and pinot noir.

Colorado has two AVAs. The Grand Valley AVA is known for syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and chardonnay.

New York’s wine producers are classified within 11 AVAs. The Hudson River Region AVA specializes in pinot noir, cabernet franc, Riesling, and merlot. Seneca Lake AVA, in the Finger Lakes region, is recognized for its Riesling, cabernet franc, chardonnay, pinot noir, and Gewurztraminer. Long Island‘s North Fork AVA is especially known for its cabernet franc, merlot, and chardonnay.

Virginia has eight AVAs. The Monticello AVA specializes in chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and viognier.

Are Airbnbs safe?

As summer approaches and vaccines roll out, we’re all eager to travel again. The CDC recently announced that fully vaccinated people can safely travel in the US.

Experts also consider private vacation homes like Airbnbs, one of the safer choices, especially when compared to hotels. This is because you are often booking an entire home protected from interaction with others.

Airbnb also announced rigorous new procedures including the Enhanced Cleaning Protocol, which includes guidelines on personal protective equipment, disinfectants, and mandatory waiting periods between previous guests and cleanings.

However, there are still serious risks to traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s important to follow advice from leading health organizations such as the CDC and the WHO. Look into the latest local and state guidelines before planning your vacation, and take precautions including wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and maintaining social distancing.

What is Airbnb’s cancellation policy?

Airbnb cancellation policies are set by each home’s host, so check the individual listing for details. You can read a full breakdown of Airbnb’s cancellation policies here.
