The website for finding ‘sugar babies’ that Matt Gaetz allegedly met women through was founded by an MIT grad who says ‘love is a concept invented by poor people’

Seeking Arrangement
  • The investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz reportedly includes women he met from Seeking Arrangement.
  • The platform, a dating app that connects “sugar babies” and “sugar daddies,” has 10 million users.
  • Gaetz has denied ever paying for sex or using websites like Seeking Arrangement.

Seeking Arrangement, a website designed to connect so-called sugar babies and sugar daddies, is making headlines for its reported role in the investigation into allegations that Rep. Matt Gaetz paid women for sex and may have broken sex-trafficking laws.

A Justice Department investigation is currently active and looking into whether Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, and associates paid women for sex, according to The New York Times. Gaetz and his associates reportedly met women from Seeking Arrangement, a popular site for women looking to receive gifts and make money by going on dates or developing relationships with wealthy men.

The Times reported that the FBI “mentioned the website in conversation with at least one potential witness.”

Gaetz has denied ever paying for sex or using Seeking Arrangement or similar sites. Seeking Arrangement did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The founder of Seeking Arrangement, Brandon Wade, started the service in 2006. Wade’s website says that he graduated from MIT and earned an MBA from the Sloan School of Business after moving to the US from Singapore.

He wrote in a CNN op-ed that he felt awkward and alienated as a young man, and that he created Seeking Arrangement to give women “the courage to go after what they really want.”

“Love is a concept invented by poor people,” he wrote. “Love at first sight that sends shivers down your spine is a fairy tale, and it doesn’t last forever. Such infatuation must be transformed into a selfless form of love, empty of possessive expectations, for any relationship to endure.”

Brandon Wade

The Seeking Arrangement website states that the service has 10 million active members, with 8 million sugar babies and 2 million sugar daddies (or ‘mommas,’ though Wade notes that that is relatively rare).

The service is free to sign up, but there are premium options available with paid subscriptions that offer more customization and search priority on the site. The terms and conditions divide users into “Successful Members” and “Attractive Members.”

Wade told Insider in 2012 that Seeking Arrangement’s annual revenue was “almost $10 million,” and that the parent company also managed other dating sites, including one dedicated to men paying for women’s travel.

Crunchbase data shows that Seeking Arrangement is a private, for-profit company, and lists its headquarters as Las Vegas.

According to Pitchbook, Wade started out consulting at Booz Allen, then began a business venture called SourceGate Systems, Inc. in 2000. “But Wade decided to return the $5 million to its investors after six months battling out with the said business,” according to Pitchbook. After that, he founded Seeking Arrangement and expanded the portfolio of sites to include SeekingMillionare.com and MissTravel.

Sugar babies on the Seeking Arrangement are encouraged to negotiate an “arrangement” with their partner. The platform bills itself as “relationships on your terms.”

Seeking Arrangement

Insider reported in 2018 that some sugar babies receive mentorship, career guidance, and investments from their sugar daddies in addition to monetary compensation.

Wade has maintained that the site is not used as a vehicle to pay for sex, but rather as a way to formalize what he said are the unwritten rules of relationships between older, wealthy men, and younger, attractive partners.

As with other dating apps, the pandemic has affected Seeking Arrangement. In a video from March of last year, Wade told users that the approximately 130 employees of the company were working from home.

“It should be physical distancing, not social distancing, that is important,” he said. He encouraged people using the app to use the time “to form genuine connections to online courtships,” and said that he was using the app more than usual. He encouraged sugar daddies to send groceries, flowers, or food to their sugar babies as they physically distance.

Seeking Arrangement has attracted some attention for being a way for college students to defray the cost of education or the pressure of student loans, and the platform has leaned in to this characterization. It releases an annual ranking of the schools it says have the most sugar babies. “Sugar babies beat student debt,” the website for their dedicated college program, Sugar Baby U, says.

Kristi Noem’s statement on pipes not being infrastructure sums up her party’s confused reaction to Biden’s plan

Kristi Noem at CPAC
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.

  • South Dakota’s Republican Gov. Kristi Noem told Fox News pipes and housing don’t count as infrastructure.
  • Her comments sum up the GOP’s messaging that infrastructure only means roads and bridges.
  • Biden’s plan argues for a broad rethink of what constitutes infrastructure, and the GOP doesn’t want that.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

President Joe Biden unveiled the first part of his $4 trillion infrastructure package on Wednesday, and almost immediately a host of Republican lawmakers criticized the bill for allocating funds to measures not specifically related to physical infrastructure, such as climate change and research initiatives.

South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem was one of them, but she offered an unorthodox definition of physical infrastructure: one that doesn’t include pipes.

In an interview on Thursday, Noem discussed the president’s infrastructure bill with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, and as the interview progressed, she elaborated on her definition of infrastructure, saying housing doesn’t qualify either.

“I was shocked by how much doesn’t go into infrastructure,” Noem said. “It goes into research and development, it goes into housing and pipes and different initiatives, green energy, and it’s not really an honest conversation that we’re having about what this proposal is.”

Shortly after the interview aired, critics on Twitter highlighted the “pipes” comment in particular, and left-leaning media figures were especially critical. For instance, MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan said Noem had “revealed she doesn’t know what infrastructure is.”

While Noem’s criticism of the bill was likely the most striking on the Republican side, her party has been unified in trying to label the bill as a Democratic “Trojan Horse,” sneaking non-infrastructure things into an infrastructure plan.

In a statement on Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made the “Trojan Horse” comparison and said that while Biden could have drafted a “serious, targeted infrastructure plan” that could have received bipartisan support, “the latest liberal wish-list the White House has decided to label ‘infrastructure’ is a major missed opportunity by this Administration.” The next day, McConnell said the the bill will not get any Republican support, at least not in the Senate.

Both McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have trotted out a key statistic to make this point: 6%, as in, less than 6% of Biden’s proposal is dedicated to roads and bridges.

The truth is that things in the plan outside of that 6% are plausibly related to infrastructure, just not a 20th-century understanding of it. McConnell’s statement highlights that Biden “would spend more money just on electric cars than on America’s roads, bridges, ports, airports, and waterways combined.”

But the White House fact sheet released on Wednesday ahead of Biden’s unveiling of the plan makes the case that it’s time to rethink infrastructure. It notes that the 1936 Rural Electrification Act involved a federal investment in bringing electricity to nearly every home in the US, and it’s time to do the same for broadband internet and electric vehicles. Republicans are saying they don’t want to have that rethink.

Some Republican voters seem open to it, more than half of them in some cases. Insider’s Juliana Kaplan reported on Friday that Republicans and Democrats’ definitions of infrastructure may be different in large part because of regional political polarization, but that even so, a Morning Consult/Politico poll shows significant levels of support among Republican voters for funding low-income housing, among other things.

But regardless of the consistency of Republican rhetoric on Biden’s infrastructure plan, the comments serve to illustrate the likely legislative outcome: zero Republican votes for it. This multitrillion-dollar plan may end up the same as Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus, which didn’t get a single vote in the House or the Senate.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the US Capitol on Friday. A US Capitol Police officer died after an incident where a man rammed two officers with a car at a security barrier.

At a press conference on Friday, acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said that a Capitol Police officer died and another was injured after someone rammed a car into a barricade outside the US Capitol building on Friday.

According to Pittman, the suspect “exited the car with a knife in hand” and lunged at the officers. Pittman said that the suspect did not comply with a verbal command, and the officers opened fire, killing the suspect, she added.

The Capitol went into lockdown earlier Friday after Capitol Police texted an alert telling people in the complex to stay indoors because of an “external security threat.” Congress is in recess and neither the House nor the Senate are in session.

At the press conference, hours after the attack, Pittman said the security threat was “neutralized.”

This story is breaking. Check back for updates.

The Ever Given’s crew is safe, still onboard, and is getting paid while the ship’s being investigated

Ever given
The “Ever Given” container ship operated by the Evergreen Marine Corporation, sails through the Suez Canal, after it was fully freed and floated.

  • Egyptian authorities are investigating the Ever Given after it blocked the Suez Canal for six days.
  • The National Union of Seafarers of India’s general secretary is hopeful the crew will be absolved.
  • The union’s general secretary said the crew will continue to be paid as the inquiry continues.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

The 25-person Indian crew of the Ever Given is stressed and tense, but is doing well as the massive container ship faces investigations after blocking the Suez Canal.

Abdulgani Serang, the general secretary of the National Union of Seafarers of India, gave Insider an update on their wellbeing on Friday.

The Egyptian government launched an inquiry into the event to uncover what went wrong after the ship became wedged in the canal and upended global trade. Investigators questioned the Ever Given’s crew on Wednesday, Suez Canal Authority Chairman Osama Rabie told local outlets, according to Reuters.

“There is a clear danger that the crew will be made scapegoats,” a senior authority in the shipping industry told the Times of India. The publication also said the Ever Given’s crew could be placed under house arrest until the investigation is completed.

ever given suez canal
The Ever Given sits beached across the Suez Canal, blocking all traffic. The ship was re-floated on March 29.

Serang told Insider that the crew of the Ever Given is safe and awaiting the results of the investigation, and added that reports about the status of the crew have been blown out of proportion.

“We want the inquiry done so corrective measures can be taken in the future,” Serang told Insider, “but we don’t want to take a guess about house arrest. Let’s not jump the gun and just wait for the results of the inquiry.”

Despite the investigation, Serang told Insider he’s optimistic that the crewmembers won’t face consequences.

“We are hopeful that the inquiry will come out that the seafarers end up clean,” Serang said. “As of now, the reports are that it was purely a weather-related incident.”

The Ever Given was traveling faster than the speed limit of the Suez Canal before getting stuck, Bloomberg reported. Initial investigations suggested the ship became beached due to high winds and ruled out any mechanical or engine failures.

ever given great bitter lake
A radar image taken by the Sentinel-1 satellite shows the Great Bitter Lake on March 31. The Ever Given is the bright ship on the lake’s eastern side.

The union secretary also said the Ever Given’s crew will continue to get paid even as the ship waits inspection in the Great Bitter Lake to determine if it can continue to its port of call.

“Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement is a company of repute,” Serang said, “and the company and union have an agreement in place. All the things will be taken care of and there is no cause to worry whatsoever.”

The owners of the Ever Given recently filed a lawsuit in the High Court of London, The Lawyer reported. According to a spokesperson for Evergreen Marine Corporation, the ship’s operators, the filing is in relation to the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and relates to liability and compensation claims related to the beached ship.

The preemptive lawsuit was filed to limit the potential damages faced by the owners of the Ever Given and was not filed in retaliation against the ship’s crew, The Maritime Executive reported.

The CDC walked back comments from its director suggesting that vaccinated people couldn’t ‘carry the virus’

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo

The Center for Disease Prevention and Control on Thursday distanced itself from comments made by its director Rochelle Walensky, who earlier in the week suggested that vaccinated people do not carry the COVID-19 virus.

A CDC spokesperson told The New York Times that Walensky “spoke broadly” and that the evidence to support her claim “isn’t clear.”

“It’s possible that some people who are fully vaccinated could get Covid-19. The evidence isn’t clear whether they can spread the virus to others. We are continuing to evaluate the evidence,” the spokesperson added.

During an MSNBC interview with Rachel Maddow on Monday, Walensky said: “Our data from the CDC today suggests that vaccinated people do not carry the virus, don’t get sick, and that it’s not just in the clinical trials, but it’s also in real-world data.”

Criticism brewed in the scientific community after Walensky’s suggestion.

A day prior to the MSNBC interview, the CDC released new data suggesting that people who have been fully vaccinated almost never carry COVID-19. Walensky referenced the data during the interview.

The CDC’s study released Monday specifically reported that one dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine registered at least 80% effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 infection, and the full two doses showed a 90% effectiveness.

China reportedly told H&M to ‘bolster its awareness of the national territory’ after citing issues with the retailer’s ‘problematic’ maps

china h&m
A woman walks by an H&M clothing store at a shopping area on March 30, 2021 in Beijing, China.

  • China told H&M to correct what it says is inaccurate mapping on the retailer’s website.
  • H&M has before been criticized by China for listing Hong Kong as a country.
  • Many in China have boycotted H&M recently over year-old comments about accusations of forced labor in the country.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Chinese officials told H&M to fix its mapping system on its website and to “bolster its awareness of national territory,” per a Friday report from the Wall Street Journal.

Regulators reportedly took issue with what some online Chinese users called “problematic Chinese maps” on H&M’s website.

The country’s internet regulator said that H&M has taken steps to correct the map inaccuracies, according to the report. H&M was directed by the regulator to study Chinese laws and “really ensure the standardized use of the Chinese map,” the Journal reports.

H&M declined Insider’s request for comment.

The retailer has drawn criticism from China in the past for labeling Hong Kong, Macau, and Tibet as countries, as well as labeling Taiwan as a country on the retailer’s native Taiwan website, the Journal notes.

The government in Beijing considers Taiwan a province of China, not a country on its own, and has increased its military as its attitude toward Taiwan has grown increasingly harsh.

The Swedish retailer became enthralled in controversy following the resurfacing of months-old comments about “forced labor” of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region.

Reports have found the Uighur minority community to be under persecution, through concentration camps and forced sterilization. China has maintained its position that the camps are “reeducation centers” designed to quell religious extremism and terrorist threats, not facilities designed to extinguish Uighur culture.

The comments were recirculated online last week after some governments, including the US, imposed sanctions on Chinese officials over allegations of human-rights violations. H&M’s criticism of forced labor in the country drew ire from Chinese consumers and companies, who boycotted the brand. Shortly after, H&M appeared to be scrubbed from the internet in China, with products missing from popular shopping sites and the location of H&M’s 500 stores removed from map services.

H&M has since responded to the backlash, saying it is “dedicated to regaining the trust and confidence of our customers, colleagues, and business partners in China.”

Why some Coca-Cola bottles have a yellow cap

In the 1930s, Coca-Cola began producing their signature soft drink with a different sugar substitute, sucrose, that made it kosher for Passover. Jews observing Passover cut out chametz, or any grain-based products that are capable of leavening. Some Jews also cut out kitniyot, which includes foods like rice, beans, peanuts, and corn. Regular bottles of Coke contain high-fructose corn syrup which is not kosher for Passover. Today, bottles of Coca-Cola that are kosher for Passover have yellow caps instead of the traditional red ones. In addition to the yellow cap, the bottle has a Passover certification symbol.

The Hechsher, or the Ⓤ marking on many common food items, is a signifier that the food is certified kosher. Kosher for Passover items require an additional Passover hechsher. There are various symbols that appear on food packaging. The symbols differ depending on which kosher organization has certified the food and the contents of the food. The small letters next to kosher symbols signify if the food is dairy, meat, pareve (neither dairy nor meat), or kosher for Passover. You can find the Ⓤ on Oreos, Coca-Cola, and many other items people purchase regularly.

Police officer killed and suspect shot dead after vehicle attack at US Capitol

Capitol car crash
Capitol Police officers near a car that crashed into a barrier on Capitol Hill on April 2.

  • The United States Capitol locked down on Friday afternoon after a car rammed into a barricade.
  • Capitol Police confirmed that the car hit two officers in front of the barricade.
  • One officer died and the other has been hospitalized. The suspect was shot and killed.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

A Capitol Police officer died and another was injured after someone rammed a car into a barricade outside the US Capitol on Friday, Yogananda Pittman, the acting Capitol Police chief, said at a press conference.

After hitting the barricade, the driver “exited the car with a knife in hand” and “lunged” at the officers before one of them opened fire, killing the driver, she added. Multiple news outlets, including NBC News, CNN, and The New York Times, identified the suspect as Noah Green, 25, of Indiana.

Capitol Police also identified the fallen officer as William “Billy” Evans, an 18-year veteran of the department.

“It is with a very, very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries,” Pittman said. “I just ask that the public keep the U.S. Capitol Police and their families in your prayers.”

The Capitol went into lockdown earlier on Friday after Capitol Police sent out an alert telling people in the complex to stay indoors because of an “external security threat.” Congress was in recess, and neither the House nor the Senate was in session.

Videos posted to social media by reporters in the building showed a heavy police presence outside the Capitol. At one point, a helicopter was seen landing on the premises, and the National Guard was also deployed after the incident.

Witnesses reported that a car crashed into the barricade outside the Capitol shortly after 1 p.m. ET.

A pair of stretchers was also seen by a reporter as first responders arrived on the scene.

For hours, members of the National Guard and armed Capitol Police officers lined a perimeter blocking everyone, including reporters, from getting closer.

US Capitol

A Capitol Police officer told Insider he was moved from a hard squad to help with the lockdown. He said officers were armed with M4 rifles, in addition to their Glocks. The officer said the lockdown was lengthier than expected as authorities sought more information about the incident.

US Capitol

The lockdown was lifted just after 3 p.m. ET. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff said she ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff in light of the events.

Friday’s incident comes less than three months after hundreds of former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol to interrupt a joint session of Congress that was underway to finalize President Joe Biden’s win. At least five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died during the violent insurrection.
