Do you give freelancers from Upwork of fiverr admin access to your website?

I have a small website and I am hiring a freelancer to write some content (and possibly do some other website optimisation). They have decent ratings on Upwork, but I am just checking what the norm is regarding giving access? They are based in a different country too. Are there any particular precautions people take? At the moment my site has limited traffic so it isn’t exactly a major financial asset, but it is still a concern.
