The HBO exclusive “Allen v. Farrow” explores the accusations of sexual abuse made against director Woody Allen by his former partner, actress Mia Farrow, and her adopted daughter Dylan Farrow. The documentary is airing as a four-part series on HBO and HBO Max, with new episodes arriving Sundays at 9 p.m. ET. You can learn more about the making of the documentary in Insider’s interview with the filmmakers

Allen and Farrow were involved in a romantic and working relationship for more than a decade, with Farrow starring in 13 films directed by Allen. In 1991, Allen began a sexual relationship with Farrow’s 21-year-old adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, and in 1992 Allen was accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with Dylan when she was 7 years old. Mia Farrow reported Allen to law enforcement, leading to an extended legal battle but no criminal charges.

Allen’s denial of the allegations and the subsequent legal proceedings have been the subject of public intrigue for years. The accusations have also gained increased attention as the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements work to confront sexual misconduct in the film industry. In 2014, an adult Dylan reaffirmed the accusation of sexual abuse with an open letter in the New York Times.

“Woody Allen is a living testament to the way our society fails the survivors of sexual assault and abuse,” she wrote.

Farrow was caring for seven children when her relationship with Allen began; including three biological sons, three adopted girls, and an adopted boy. She adopted Dylan in 1985 and Farrow and Allen had one biological child together, Ronan Farrow, in 1987. Ronan has been vocally supportive of Dylan and has reported on other cases of sexual misconduct in the entertainment business.

Soon-Yi Previn and Moses Farrow have expressed public support for Allen, claiming that Farrow was overbearing and abusive in the household. Previn has been married to Allen since 1997, while Moses is estranged from other members of the family besides Allen and Soon-Yi . Farrow raised 14 children in total, 10 of whom are adopted.

The long-standing accusations against Allen have been a polarizing subject in Hollywood for decades – while many in the industry have vowed against working with Allen in the future, others have spoken out in support of Allen, like director Spike Lee and actress Scarlett Johansson.

Allen’s 2020 memoir, “Apropos of Nothing,” was canceled by publisher Hachette after employees staged a walkout in protest of its release. However, the book was released less than a month after the cancellation by Arcade Publishing. In 2019 Allen filed a $68 million lawsuit against Amazon for terminating a four-film contract he had signed with Amazon Studios two years earlier, but the case was voluntarily dismissed.
