  • Starting today, Everlane is hosting a huge sale with hundreds of items for up to 60% off.
  • You’ll find underwear for as low as $6 and T-shirts as low as $9.
  • The sale continues as long as inventory lasts, though we predict most styles will go very quickly.

Everlane is the name behind many of our favorite wardrobe staples. It’s where we’ve found our go-to slip-on sneakers, comfortable loungewear sets for working from home, and dozens of other basics that have made their way into our everyday rotation.

And while the transparent pricing model already makes Everlane fairly accessible, it just got even easier to fill up your closet thanks to the retailer’s huge Summer Sale. Starting today, July 19, you can find nearly 1,000 styles for men and women at up to 60% off.

Everlane doesn’t often host sales, so this is one event we recommend checking out. Most of the styles included are summer pieces, like crewneck tees for $12 and a pair of strappy sandals for $19, but you can also get ahead of the fall season with classic cashmere sweaters discounted to just $40.

The sale will continue while inventory lasts, but with prices like this, we don’t expect that to be very long. Just keep in mind while making your selections that many, though not all, of the items are final sale.

You can see some of the best items included in Everlane’s Summer Sale below, or head straight to the site to start shopping here.

The 18 best flip flops for men and women in 2021

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

Woman wearing Archies Arch-Support Flip-Flops
  • Summer wouldn’t be the same without that magical sound of flip-flops at the beach and pool.
  • These simple sandals come in a variety of styles, including day-to-night options.
  • Some brands offer styles with arch support or massaging footbeds.

The sound of flip-flops flipping and flopping at the beach or pool is one of the quintessential sounds of summer. These simple sandals have a history dating back to the ancient Egyptians. The modern version first became popular in the 1950s when they received their onomatopoeic name for the distinctive sound they make, although they also go by a variety of other names including thongs (Australia), slippers (Hawaii), and clam diggers (Texas).

At their simplest, this sandal style features a post that goes in between the first and second toes and often has Y-shaped straps that go around the sides of the feet. With that being said, there are many variations on the basic theme, as you’ll see below.

We’ve included men’s, women’s, and unisex choices, and although anyone can wear any of these, the women’s and men’s selections have limited sizing compared to the unisex options.

Here are the best flip-flops for 2021

OluKai ‘Ohana

OluKai ‘Ohana flip-flops

These are easy wearing sandals good for all-day wear that look great whether running errands, hanging out at the beach, or having a casual dinner out.

When You slide into a pair of OluKai ‘Ohana flip-flops, the footbed feels smooth and pillowy yet with a firmness below the surface. These are easy-wearing sandals that look great whether running errands, hanging out at the beach, or having a casual dinner out. The upper is made from a soft, but sturdy synthetic material that’s lined with a quick-drying jersey, and doesn’t chafe the space between your toes where they touch the nylon post. Over time they conform to the shape of your feet.

OluKai is also a certified B Corporation that meets high ethical and environmental standards and has been giving back to Hawaii, where the company was born in 2006, through its Ama OluKai Foundation, which helps preserve the state’s heritage, culture, and the environment through grants to various non-profits.

Vionic Tide II Post Sandal

Vionic Tide II Post Sandal

The Vionic Tide II Post Sandals are good for your feet and look good on them too.

If you’re used to thin, flat flip-flops, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Vionic Tide II Post Sandal. They’re made with a footbed that supports your feet and cradles the arch in a design that’s been proven to alleviate heel pain. It even has a Seal of Acceptance by the American Podiatric Medical Association. My wife, who owns these sandals, tells me she doesn’t experience any chaffing between her toes even after wearing them all day. The footbed is firm but cushiony and there’s a medium-density EVA midsole that’s good at minimizing shock when you walk, which helps reduce stress on your knees and ankles.

Vionic recommends slowly breaking these sandals if you’re not used to flip-flops with arch support. The outsoles are durable and provide good traction. The Tide IIs come in six colorways and are cute enough to dress up for a casual night out. These are the brand’s most popular styles and with good reason.

Crocs Crocband Flip-Flop

Blue Crocs Crocband Flip-Flop

The Crocband has all the advantages of Crocs’ clogs—shock absorbing, comfortable, water and odor resistant—in a sleek flip-flop with a massaging footbed.

Crocs are known for its clogs, but the Colorado-based company also makes a lot of other footwear — including the Crocband Flip-Flops. They combine the brand’s signature comfort (chefs and school kids love them for a reason) and the breathability, lightness, and sleek look of a sandal.

The Crocband has a massaging footbed, a sporty look with a signature midsole racing stripe. It is made of a proprietary resin called Croslite (the same thing they use for the clogs) that has maximum cushioning, is odor and water-resistant, buoyant, quick-drying, and easy to clean. With a whopping 34 colorways, you should be able to find one that suits you. These only come in full sizes, and we recommend sizing up if you usually wear a half-size.

Reef Voyage Lux Sandals

Reef Voyage Lux Sandals

Reef’s Voyage Lux flip-flops are beautifully crafted leather flip-flops that are tough enough for whatever outdoor activity you throw at them.

Reef, the California sandal and surf lifestyle company, always does a fantastic job of combining comfortable footwear that doesn’t require breaking them in with quality craftsmanship. The Voyage Lux men’s sandal is a good example. Unlike some flip-flops I’ve owned, these didn’t give me a blister between my toes and were comfortable from day one. After four years of hard seasonal use, mine are still going strong.

The leather footbed has gotten even softer and developed a nice patina (like an old baseball glove) while the foam midsole is still responsive and cushiony. These flip-flops have a leather upper with a soft molded footbed, an EVA midsole, and a rubber outsole with a thickly ridged sawtooth tread that keeps you steady in slippery conditions. Plus, Reef offers free shipping and returns.

Everlane ReNew Strappy Sandal

Everlane ReNew Strappy Sandal

Everlane’s ReNew sandal combines the best of a flip-flop with a strappy sandal for an elevated look and a bit of extra support while walking.

Everlane is a go-to favorite for many reasons, including timeless style over fast fashion trends, relatively transparent sourcing, and a drive to be as sustainable as possible. Their ReNew Strappy Sandal gives you the best of a flip-flop and a strappy sandal. Unlike typical flip-flops, the thong strap extends fully around the ankle with a stretchy back strap that provides a bit of extra support when walking. The footbed is made of recycled polyester and has a cushioned insole, and the recycled rubber outsole will keep you from slipping poolside. These sandals are made in Vietnam. They don’t come in half-sizes so size up if you fall in between sizes.

Havaianas Unisex Top Flip-Flops

Orange Havaianas Unisex Top Flip-Flops

Havaianas has been making exceptional since 1962 and still makes them out of natural rubber in Brazil.

Havaianas flip-flops have been a part of summer since 1962 when the Brazilian brand first launched the first mass-produced rubber flip-flop. The Top Flip-Flop is an iconic style still produced in Brazil. Because they’re made of natural rubber, they may feel a bit stiffer than foam versions when you first wear them but they’ll quickly become more pliable. The rubber should also keep from compressing over time, unlike foam. These sandals feature wide straps and a cushioned footbed with the brand’s signature textured rice pattern that harks back to these flip-flops origins as they were based on traditional Japanese zori sandals. They come in nine colors, including a bright orange that’s perfect for a summer holiday.

Hari Mari HM x Peter Millar Flip-Flops

Hari Mari HM x Peter Millar Flip-Flops

The Hari Mari HM x Peter Millar Flip-Flops are made from water-resistant full-grain leather and feature firm arch support, memory foam in all the right places, and rubber bottoms with good gripping power on wet areas.

The Hari Mari HM x Peter Millar Flip-Flops are a limited-edition collaboration with North Carolina-based premium sportswear brand Peter Millar, which is known for its craftsmanship and casual elegance. These flip-flops are made from water-resistant, full-grain leather and feature firm arch support, memory foam in all the right places, and rubber bottoms with good gripping power on wet areas. You could consider these “dressy” flip-flops, as in they’d look great with a pair of chinos and a linen button-up shirt or a more casual camp shirt and Bermuda shorts.

They come in three colorways, but the chambray and cognac pair is especially good-looking with its woven linen chambray straps. Hari Mari flip-flops don’t come in half sizes, so size up if you’re between, per the company’s recommendation. You can also feel good about buying from this brand. Hari Mari donates one percent of its profits from every flip-flop sale to its “” initiative that assists pediatric cancer patients.

Birkenstock Gizeh Patent

Red Birkenstock Gizeh Patent

Think of the Birkenstock Gizeh Patent as minimalist upscale flip-flops that are good for your feet.

The German brand Birkenstock that’s been around since the 1700s has a well-deserved reputation for being super comfortable, thanks to the sandals’ contoured cork footbeds that conform to the wearer’s feet. While best known for its iconic two-strap sandal, the brand also makes a thong style. The footbeds are lined in soft suede with a springy EVA midsole sandwiched between the suede and the brand’s signature cork layer that offers arch support, a deep heel cup, and a wide toe box. The outsole is also made of EVA and is light but provides good cushioning.

Besides being able to slip into them on like traditional flip-flops, these sandals have buckle closures so you can adjust them for an individualized fit. The backside of the Birko-Flor is lined with soft, breathable fleece that’s gentle on the skin. Zappos offers three color choices, including a shiny bright red. Think of these as minimalist upscale flip-flops that are good for your feet.

Archies Arch-Support Flip-Flops

Woman wearing Archies Arch-Support Flip-Flops

Archie’s one-piece design prevents the dreaded flip-flop blowout while the design promotes proper foot posture. All this and a decent price tag, too.

Australian footwear brand Archies, which was started by a physiotherapist, has a hugely loyal following thanks to its super comfy flip-flops that come at a reasonable price point of $35. These podiatrist-recommended sandals are made from special closed-cell foam that’s springy, soft, and molds to the feet. The high arch may take a little getting used to, but you’ll soon appreciate it. Unlike many flip-flops, Archies has a one-piece construction that prevents the dreaded blowout when the post pops out of the sole. They don’t come in half-sizes so the company recommends that if you have narrow feet to size down and wide feet to size up.

Freewater Treeline Sport

Freewater Treeline Sport

The Freewater Treeline Sport is a multifunctional sandal that can be worn like a flip-flop or a walking sandal.

The Treeline Sport takes the flip-flop in an outdoor direction with a multifunctional design that allows you to wear them as flip-flops or as hiking sandals, thanks to a removable ankle strap. There’s also a strap that goes across the top of the foot for added support. These sandals feature a ridged Therm-a-Rest material as the footbed. In the Treeline Sport, these ridges massage your feet and promote airflow and water drainage. The Vibram Eco Tread outsoles are made of 30% recycled content and are good at gripping the ground in wet conditions. Another benefit of buying these sandals is that one percent of Freewater’s net sales go to grassroots projects that provide clean drinking water in developing nations. Size up if you wear a half-size, according to Freewater.

J. Crew Easy Summer Flip-Flops

With eight colors, from metallic gold to brilliant cobalt (a bright blue) you may have trouble deciding which to get. The sole has good traction and the footbed is lightly padded and looks great with shorts, jeans, or a maxi dress. If you wear a half-size, get the next whole size up.

Oofos Ooriginal Sandal

Blue Oofos Ooriginal Sandal

Oofos Ooriginal Sandals are like walking on marshmallows and are made to aid your recovery after a brutal workout or a hard day at work.

The experience of wearing the Oofos Ooriginal Sandal has often been described as “like walking on marshmallows.” They’re soft and ultra-cushiony, thanks to a proprietary foam technology that absorbs 37% more impact than regular foam footwear material. These are billed as recovery sandals, meaning their main function is to relieve tired feet after strenuous activity like running or hiking. This is achieved through the patented footbed design that takes the pressure off the feet, knees, and lower back. They’re also machine washable, have a six-month warranty, and don’t require any break-in period. Oofos don’t come in half sizes so the company recommends sizing up for women and down for men.

Astral Filipe

Astral Filipe

The Astral Filipe takes you from poolside to mountainside with a removal ankle strap and super-grippy outsoles.

Astral, the North Carolina-based outdoor equipment company, offers a flip-flop that’s built for the outdoors, whether at the beach, on a hike, or cruising around the city. The uppers are made from cushioned synthetic leather and feature a soft, water-wicking knit liner and a cushy nylon webbing toe post. Below, there’s a springy EVA midsole and outstanding outsoles made from G Rubber, the company’s proprietary material, which is super grippy, non-marking, and abrasion-resistant The Filipe comes with removable ankle straps to take you from poolside to mountainside in a jiffy. If you wear a half-size, size up.

Hoka One One Ora Recovery Flip

Hoka One One Ora Recovery Flip

Hoka One One is best known for its “maximalist” super-cushioned running shoes so it makes sense its Ora Recovery Flip also features tons of plush cushioning and design that encourages a smoother gait.

Hoka One One, the French athletic shoe company, is best known for its super-cushioned “maximal” running shoes that have excellent cushioning-to-weight ratios and promote stability. It should come as no surprise that the company’s Ora Recovery Flips also feature an extra thick cushioned midsole, a plush, textured EVA footbed, and a design that encourages a smoother gait. These also have a textile upper that helps wick moisture and an outsole that has great traction. The Ora Flips are extremely light at 4.5 oz per sandal. Like the Oofos, these are designed for post-workout or a hard day at work and help relieve tired feet while promoting recovery. Besides that, they offer them in basic black or two brighter hues: Luminary Green/Blue Tint or Cantaloupe/Fiesta, a pretty pinkish-orange.

Revs Lights Massage Flip Flops

Yellow and Blue Revs Lights Massage Flip Flops

Give yourself a massage while you walk with the Revs Lights Massage Flip Flops.

With its hundreds of massaging rubber nodules on the footbeds, the Revs Light flip-flops aren’t just for chilling poolside, these are meant to stimulate your pressure points for better circulation and to reduce fatigue, among other alleged health benefits. Designed by a Scottish reflexologist, these sandals are also designed to improve your posture and stance.

The footbed and straps are made of rubber and the outsole of shock-absorbing EVA. Many customers suggest easing into wearing them over time as they can feel unusual when you first put them on. They come in a bunch of fun colorways from metallic to two-tone blue and bright yellow. Since there are no half sizes, it’s recommended you size up.

Sole Catalina Sport Flip

Sole Catalina Sport Flip

The is good for your feet and the environment that mold to the shape of your feet and includes a new type of sustainable foam made from algae rather than petroleum.

Sole made its name with its orthotic insoles but the Canadian company also makes a popular line of footwear, including the Catalina Sport Flip, a sandal with the same eco-friendly technology that goes into its insoles. The Catalina sandals mold to your feet after about a week of use for a customized wearing experience. They feature a sustainable Bloom Algae Foam footbed made from algae instead of petroleum, an EVA midsole, and arch support. The upper is made from a nicely padded, soft synthetic nubuck-like material. Plus, they’re water-friendly and have a grippy outsole. Size up if you typically wear a half size.

Flojos Olivia Vintage Sandal

Flojos Olivia Vintage Sandal

Flojos Olivia Vintage Sandal is a versatile wedge flip-flop with a 70s feel but modern materials for a comfortable fit.

Flojos, which started life in Mexico in 1972, is a California sandal brand with a throwback beach vibe and decently priced footwear ranging from $20 to $60. The Olivia Vintage Sandal is a wedge flip-flop with a 70s feel that’s the brand’s most popular style. The 2 ½ inch heel is not too tall, not too short, but definitely gives you a bit of a lift while still being comfortable thanks to the cupped footbed design that cradles the feet and a springy EVA midsole, and a light sponge rubber outsole.

The burnished faux leather straps also give these wedges a vintage feel but they haven’t forgotten the comfort here either as the straps are lined with a soft fabric and the toe post is also softly reinforced. Dress them up with wide-leg pants and a poet’s blouse or down with denim shorts and a T. Per the brand, if you typically wear a half size and have narrow feet, go down to the next whole size. If you wear a half-size and have wide feet, size up.

Indosole Flip-Flops

Men's Indosole Flip-Flops

Indosole Flip-Flops are eco-conscious with soles made from recycled tires. Beyond that, they come in a range of beautiful colorways, are well made, and very comfortable.

While not billed as unisex, Indosole’s flip-flops are gender-neutral except for the sizing. Let’s start with one of the major differences between this brand and others on the market. The company uses recycled tires in its products. Tire waste is a huge international environmental problem as they don’t easily decompose and are often burned in developing countries polluting the air, ground, and water.

Indosole, a certified B corporation, came up with a way to break the tires down and reconstitute them for use as sturdy outsoles. The rubber the company uses for the footbed is ethically sourced and the strap is from a custom-made material called ENVRO Fiber that comes from sustainably grown plants and recycled sources. Besides the environmental aspects of these flip-flops, these are well-made, waterproof, non-slip, come in a ton of beautiful colorways, and are very comfortable.

We asked editors, stylists, and influencers for the stylish sneakers they love – here are their 16 picks and styling tips

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Collage of photos for best stylish sneakers women

It’s impossible to label a single pair of sneakers the “most stylish” of them all. That’s because everyone’s personal style, preferences, and needs vary. Instead of sharing a few options that may or may not be “cool” in your book, we spoke with a group of industry experts who know a thing or two about style and sneakers.

When we asked editors, stylists, and influencers to tell us about their favorite pairs of sneakers, we knew there was a chance we’d get a monotonous handful of options. To our luck – and yours – their sneaker picks run the gamut. From classic and sporty Air Jordans to chunky “dad shoes” and sustainable kicks, there’s a stylish sneaker for everyone in this roundup. These 16 pairs of sneaks are ride-or-dies for our experts – and they might soon end up in your closet, too.

The 16 most stylish sneakers, according to experts:

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Platform Sneaker

A feminine person wearing the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Platform Sneaker in white, and paired with a pink tie-dye dress and a yellow beaded purse.

“My favorite sneakers are usually the classics with a fun twist — an eye-catching detail that sets them apart and makes them seem special. It’s one of the reasons I’m such a big fan of Converse’s Chuck Taylor All-Star Platforms. For starters, I tend to pair white sneakers with just about any outfit, whether it’s a dress or a casual pair of jeans because it’s a clean, neutral shoe that always provides some sort of balance. The platform, however, adds a bit of playfulness —not to mention a little height for 5’0″ me. Styled with a tube sock, these babies make just enough of a statement without being overpowering.” Samantha Sutton, senior fashion editor at InStyle.com

Nike Daybreak

A feminine person wearing the Nike DayBreak SP Low-top Sneakers in a neutral colorway with a pop of orange.

“I really love a neutral sneaker with a subtle pop of color, but I’m also always on the lookout for a pair that makes my size ten feet look a little less lanky. The Nike Daybreak in Vegas Gold has the ideal silhouettestreamlined, almond toe, a bit of lift on the sole. Orange is currently my favorite color to wear, so the swoosh detail and the tan suede work with a ton of pieces in my wardrobe at the moment. I’ll style them with everything from leather trousers to high-waisted denim shorts and either a sweater, baggy t-shirt, or a vintage button-up in an array of warm tones. Bonus? They’re also insanely comfortable.” Hannah Baxter, deputy beauty editor at The Zoe Report

Buffalo CLD Chai Sneaker

A feminine person wearing a matching set in pastel orange, plus the Buffalo CLD Chai Sneaker in white.

“My go-to pair is the Buffalo London Chai sneakers. They’re all white, making them super easy to style and they have the perfect platform to give me that extra height. Most importantly, they are super comfortable and perfect for everyday wear!”Ashley Jones, content creator and blogger

New Balance Made in US 990v5

A feminine person sitting in a white chair on the beach, wearing the New Balance Made in US 990v5 sneaker in grey.

“As a sneaker obsessive, I have a closet full of styles I cycle through — Nike Dunks, Vans Slip-Ons, and Adidas’ Wales Bonner collab all included — but, one style I keep coming back to is New Balance’s 990v5. It’s not as clunky as other “dad shoes” but it still has the sporty-dorky vibe that I like. Just add tall socks, and everything from workout gear to a floaty dress looks good with these shoes.” Aemilia Madden, senior fashion editor at The Zoe Report

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Low Top

A feminine person wearing a white and blue striped dress with the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Low Top sneaker in white.

“My favorite sneakers are my white Chuck Taylor All-Star Low Tops. These shoes are comfortable and timeless, and they match everything. I love styling them with feminine dresses to make the look feel more casual.” Tyler Chanel, ethical blogger

Thousand Fell Lace Up

A feminine person wearing a pastel yellow sweater vest, jeans, and the Thousand Fell Lace Up sneaker in white.

“Thousand Fell is a sustainable shoe brand that makes sneakers out of recycled bottles and natural rubber. I love how innovative they are in the ways they incorporate sustainable practices into their business. They’re vegan and use food waste like coconut husk and sugar cane to replace unnecessary plastic. At the end of use, you can turn the shoes back in to be recycled and they turn the old materials into new shoes. I also love how comfortable and versatile these shoes are.” Gabby Sage Masuda Ambata, content creator

Adidas Originals Torsion TRDC

A feminine person kissing a child, wearing the Adidas Originals Torsion Trdc Marathon Running Sneakers.

“My go-to pair of sneakers are Adidas’s Torsion TRDC shoe. I got them last year as more of a fashion sneaker — I wore them with joggers and wide-leg pants through winter, but they’re so comfortable that they eventually became my go-to workout shoe, too. They’re more cushiony than I’m used to, but they’re the perfect fit for hiking or walking outside.” Lauren Caruso, fashion editor and creative consultant

Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers

A feminine person wearing a matching orange knit set and the Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers in gray.

“My favorite pair of stylish sneakers would have to be my Balenciaga Triple S Sneakers in grey. I love these sneakers because the color palette is so neutral and pairs well with almost any outfit. I can dress them up or dress them down, which is why they’re my go-to sneakers for any season.” Britney Turner, founder and CEO of The Boss Up Inc.

“The Air Jordan 1 sneakers are an iconic and timeless style that remains top of the list for most coveted sneakers. Whether you prefer the low- or high-tops, they are a fun staple to work into your wardrobe. If you can get your hands on a pair, I would style them with a casual T-shirt dress and trench coat or pair them with a relaxed fit jean, cropped tee, and oversized blazer. Both ways help you easily achieve the effortless ‘cool girl’ street style look with the AJ1 sneakers.” Katie Peare, celebrity stylist

The neutral design with that little pop of color is what drew me to these specifically. I love to style them with frayed denim shorts and a cropped muscle tee, and level it up with accessories for a more “cool girl’ summer look. These will be in heavy rotation this summer!” Khadijah Lacey-Taylor, lifestyle content creator

It’s interesting, functional, and extremely comfortable. It’s so versatile that you can wear it with a very relaxed look or a dressed-up outfit, and it gives any look an interesting touch.” Kris Fe, celebrity stylist

Most people wouldn’t wear running sneakers to a bar, but the neutral tones make for such a chic, sporty look with shiny leggings and a cropped sweater. You’ll probably find me on the streets of New York wearing a workout set, denim jacket, and these sneakers every day of the week. The 9 best women’s loafers that will become instant classics in your wardrobe

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Best loafers for women 4x3
  • Loafers are a classic shoe with endless variations.
  • Below are 9 of our all-time favorite pairs, from brands like Everlane and M.Gemi.
  • For other shoe styles, check out our guides to the best flats and best white sneakers.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Loafers, like a great pair of flats, are rare in their sheer versatility and practicality. You can wear them with trousers and workwear, jeans and tees, dresses, shorts, and everything in-between. And, with the right pair, your feet won’t hate you after a long day out.

From classic leather pairs that can be dressed up for work, to chunky lug-sole styles made for bolder looks, you’ll find our picks for the best women’s loafers below.

And a quick note on pricing: We think it’s worth spending a bit more money for high-quality loafers that won’t give you those horrible back-of-the-heel blisters. They are, after all, a timeless shoe, which means the extra cost won’t go wasted on a fleeting trend.

Here are 9 of the best loafers you can shop:

Everlane The Modern Loafer

Everlane Modern Loafer

Everlane recently reintroduced its Modern Loafer with an updated look and fit, and the new version is definitely better than the old. The toe is slightly more rounded so your toes have more room to wiggle, and the leather is a bit more flexible. I haven’t gotten a blister yet from wearing them, which is more than I can say for the old pair. A stacked wood heel gives them a casual vibe, and the rubberized sole prevents slipping and sliding on slick floors.

For sizing, these come in whole and half sizes. I always order a size 8 at Everlane even though I’m often a 7.5 in other brands. If you’re usually in between sizes, go a half size up for the best fit.

Read our full review of the Everlane Modern Loafer here.

Bass Whitney Weejuns

Bass Whitney Weejuns

There are several versions of the Whitney Weejuns (a super chunky lug-sole pair, a ’90s-inspired platform pair, a croc-effect pair, the list goes on), but nothing can beat the classic version. Though they take a bit of time to break in, especially at the heel, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how comfy and supportive the insole is. Plus, the traditional penny loafer look will never go out of style.

In terms of sizing, these come in whole and half sizes, and I recommend going true to your usual size. If you’re in between, you’ll want to size up, especially if you plan on wearing them with socks.

Gucci Brixton Horsebit Convertible Loafer

Gucci Brixton Loafers

If you’ve thought long and hard, and you know that designer loafers are what your heart desires, get the Gucci Brixton Horsebit Convertible Loafers. They’re pricey, sure, but these classic loafers will last you a lifetime. Our senior style and beauty editor, Maria Del Russo, has had her pair of Brixtons for five years and says they’re the most versatile shoe she owns. She credits this to the fold-down heel that lets you wear them like mules, so you’re essentially getting two shoes in one. The workmanship is apparent the longer you wear them, too. Maria has gotten these loafers re-soled twice, but the leather and hardware have both stood the test of time.

The one drawback to the Brixtons is that after many years, the fold-down heels have turned a slightly more faded shade of black than the rest of the heel.

As for sizing, these come in whole and half sizes, but be careful to check the sizing chart since they’re usually listed in Italian sizing, which is different from European sizing. We recommend going up if you’re in between sizes.

Birdies Heron Slippers

Birdies the Starling Black Velvet

Birdies makes indoor-outdoor loafers that are as comfy as a regular pair of slippers. Several members of our team are big fans of Birdies — our travel editor Hannah and our senior home and kitchen reporter Connie both have multiple pairs. “For each pair, I had a brief break-in period of a week or so where the back of the shoe rubbed up against my heel, but since then, it’s molded well to my feet. I prefer to wear them on cooler days because as comfortable as the cushioned insoles are, they can make my feet sweat on hot days,” Connie said.

Both Hannah and Connie say to order a half size up for the right fit, especially if you’re usually in between sizes.

Heron Slippers (small)
M.Gemi The Felize

M.Gemi The Felize Suede

The M.Gemi Felize loafers are some of the most versatile and well-made shoes that our senior reporter, Mara Leighton, owns. After a year of wearing them multiple times per week, she says they’ve held up well (no wrinkles along the top, minimal wear along the underside of the toes and heel). However, she notes that sizing isn’t perfect. “I ordered my true size, and they’ve grown looser and more custom-fit as moccasins do over time. But, even so, the top is still snug; I couldn’t layer anything thicker than a light sock with my pair.” She notes that if you’re in between sizes, or if you’ve ever had to size up in shoes, you should go at least a half size up in these.

To get the right fit, these are available in whole and half sizes, but we suggest you go a half size up.

Felize Suede Loafer (small)
Clea Loafers

Naturalizer Clea Loafers

For a dressy loafer on a budget, Naturalizer’s Clea style is a great buy. The leather is flexible and not too stiff, so they’re comfy for long days. Plus, you can almost always find this pair on sale in various colors, but beware that sizes sell out quickly every time they get marked down. After testing the classic black leather pair, we found the size chart to be a little off for — you’ll want to go down a half size, as they tend to run a bit large. Overall, though, this is a comfortable pair with good traction that you’ll get a lot of mileage from.

For sizing, this loafer is available in whole and half sizes with narrow, medium, and wide widths. It’s best to size down at least a half size, as they run large.

Clea Loafer Flat (small)
Rothy’s The Loafer

Rothy’s Indigo Cloud Loafers

Rothy’s is known for making sustainable shoes out of repurposed plastic water bottles, and its loafers, which come in nearly 20 colors, are no exception. Like all of Rothy’s flats, the loafers use its proprietary thread for the upper and bio-based algae for sections of its insoles. The company’s processes also help offset carbon emissions throughout its supply chain.

The seamless knit is breathable, stays cool, and flexes comfortably with your foot while you move. The shoes are also machine washable, so don’t worry about ordering a light color that’s prone to get dirty. The material shouldn’t stretch much over time, so make sure they’re not too snug when you first receive them. If you have wide feet, we recommend sizing up.

This loafer is available in whole and half sizes, but we recommend sizing up a half size if you’re in between sizes or have wide feet. You can hear more about why we like this loafer in our review of Rothy’s flats

The Loafer (small)
M.Gemi The Sacca Donna

M.Gemi Sacca Donna Loafer

We tested these loafers in a snakeskin pattern when they first became available, but now you’ll find several suede styles that are even chicer and more versatile. The material itself is relatively thin, but that makes them buttery soft and flexible. They really do bend with the foot and they don’t cause blisters. But, it’s worth noting that the soles are thin enough that you won’t be too comfortable walking on uneven surfaces like cobblestone (so maybe don’t take these on vacation to Europe).

You can find this loafer in whole and half sizes, but we recommend sizing up a half size if you’re in between sizes. Otherwise, go true to size.

Read our full review of the M.Gemi Sacca Donna Loafers here.

Sacca Donna (Suede) (small)
Margaux Penny Loafer

Margaux Penny Loafer

I’m a big fan of Margaux’s flats, and these loafers are just as comfortable. The suede is soft and easy to break in, and there’s a bit of cushioning on the insole that makes them comfortable for long days out. The construction is also better than most other suede loafers I’ve tried, so points to Margaux for quality!

I wouldn’t recommend wearing them on a super long walk, but they’re otherwise comfy for work, weekends, errands, and the like. You can expect the suede to crease across the foot pretty quickly, but that’s the case for literally any loafer made from this material. You’ll see it more in the colorful pairs but it’s barely noticeable on the black pair I have.

The sizing with Margaux shoes is actually kind of hard to get right in my experience, so heed this advice: Opting for a half size down but a wider size is likely to get you the best fit, unless you have particularly narrow feet. I am usually between a 7.5 and 8 with pretty average width, but I got the 7.5 Wide pair and they fit like a glove. The 8 would have been too big, and the regular 7.5 would have been too tight.

This loafer comes in whole and half sizes with narrow, medium, and wide fits. Margaux is also known for its extensive size range, with this pair coming in sizes 3-14.

The 6 best women’s running shoes in 2021, from cushioned stability shoes to lightweight speed runners

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

  • Solid running shoes that support your biomechanics will make miles more comfortable and safe.
  • It’s important to consider how much cushioning you need and where, and what surface you run on.
  • Our top pick, , is lightweight, cushioned, and durable enough to last long miles.

Running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise (and stress relief). Whether you’ve decided you’re going to start running a mile a week or you’re training for your first marathon, finding a quality, comfortable pair of running shoes is the first step to guaranteeing that commitment will happen – and that it’ll actually be enjoyable.

If you’re new to running, it’s hard to know how to choose the best pair of shoes off anything other than aesthetics. But, truly, it’s fit you want to look for. The amount of cushioning, stability, tread, breathability, and overall design shape is different for every shoe, and each of these effects or supports your natural biomechanics (that’s the way all the parts of your body move to create one overall unit).

If shoes often squish your toes, you want to look for a pair with a wider toe box. If you have bad knees or an old injury, you might do well with more cushioning in a shoe. What’s more, features like deeper lugs or waterproofing can make things like trail runs or winter runs not only more comfortable but also safer.

These aren’t just nice-to-haves: Over time, running miles and miles in the wrong shoe for your body can lead to stress and overuse injuries.

We would know: I’ve been an avid runner for years, as have all the fitness editors at Insider Reviews. Together, we comprise a diverse pool of varying foot shapes and biomechanical needs and have tested nearly every running shoe on the market.

Leveraging our experience as runners and as gear reviewers, we’ve narrowed in on the best running shoes for women with different needs. At the end of this guide, we go into more detail on how to shop for a women’s running shoe.

Here are the best women’s running shoes:

The best women’s running shoe overall

Ghost 11

The shoes are durable enough for long runs, light enough for speedwork, and are even more responsive than the Ghost 10 thanks to a new sole unit.

Pros: Well-cushioned, lightweight, smooth heel-to-toe transition, breathable, versatile design ideal for both speed work and long distances

Cons: Heavy, not supportive enough for overpronation, some reviewers feel the sole redesign creates a firmer feel that could become uncomfortable on long distances

If you’re looking for a cushioned, neutral running shoe that will fit most foot shapes, the is your pick. The latest model of the Ghost line-up, the has out-of-the-box comfort and works for both comfortable long runs and snappy speed work.

The keeps much of what worked in prior Ghost iterations, including the 12mm heel-to-toe drop for a smooth ride. There have also been a few significant design changes, most notable the new sole unit which cuts down on the foam of previous models. This helps break away from Brooks’ reputation for heavy shoes — the Ghost 13 is comparably lightweight to other shoes on our list at just 8.8 ounces.

The rest of the sole keeps the original DNA foam which gives it the cushioned and responsive feel the Ghost line is known for. I found that this redesign offers a firmer feel underfoot than its predecessors, which is great for speedwork but could create some discomfort for longer distances.

The shoe’s upper features a seamless, engineered mesh that promotes airflow while keeping dirt and debris out. It also gives the shoe a sleeker, more modern look. I also love that unlike many other shoes, the Ghost 13 has one tongue loop so it won’t slip around while you run and you don’t have to constantly readjust.

The best running shoe for overpronating

New Balance Fresh Foam 860v11

The New Balance Fresh Foam 860v11 is specifically designed for those who overpronate, providing a smooth, comfortable ride from heel to toe.

Pros: Great overpronation support, comfortable cushioning, breathable, stable, 10mm drop for a natural heel-to-toe motion

Cons: Heavy, not ideal for neutral runners, upper too breathable for cold weather, narrower toe box than previous models

As a tried-and-true stability shoe line, the entire New Balance 860 line is solely dedicated to providing stability to those who overpronate, helping prevent any unnecessary running injuries.

The newest model in the line, the 860v11 has a new Fresh Foam midsole, which delivers a soft-yet-supportive feel. The 860v11 excels at providing a steady and well-supported run. One of the downsides of the 860v11 is, at 9.6 ounces, this shoe is slightly heavier compared to others on our list. But the slight weight increase comes with the payoff of more support, and its durability makes the 860v11 ideal for high-mileage.

It has a T-Beam stability shaft that runs under the midsole to help correct overpronation and still allows for a snappy and responsive feel often found in lighter running shoes. The blown rubber outsole works well in both wet and dry conditions, too.

Unfortunately, the 860v11 does have a slightly narrower toe box, particularly in comparison to past models, which will be a deal-breaker for some (though it’s worth noting the model comes in narrow, standard, wide, or extra-wide widths).

The best shoe for trail running

Hoka CHALLENGER ATR 6

The can handle rough terrain with its rugged soles, yet provides max cushioning and feels lightweight for a comfortable run.

Pros: Fantastic cushioning-to-weight ratio, rugged outsole and 4 mm lugs provide great traction, works on both trails and roads, toe-cap protection against rocks, comes in wide-width option, beloved by runners with joint pain

Cons: Not suited for overpronators, maybe too cushioned for rugged trails

The is the ideal road-to-trail shoe for anyone who may be tackling mixed terrain. With Hoka’s signature cushioning underfoot, the Challenger ATR 6  provides stability and less stress and impact on the body. The is considered a neutral running shoe, so it won’t offer much in terms of support for overpronators. Devotees of the brand swear by that padding for reducing stress on their tendons and muscles, though.

Lightweight at just 8.8 ounces and with 4mm lugs, they’re responsive, rugged, and won’t weigh you down while you conquer your local trail. The shoe’s box is reinforced with thermoplastic polyurethane to protect your toes from rocks and roots on the trail. Hokas fit most feet, but the does have a wide-width option for those who need a seriously wide shoe.

If you have to log some pavement strides before you hit trail, the traction and grip performance of this shoe is the sweet spot to works just as well on trails as it does on the pavement.

The biggest update to the ATR 6 from the 5 is the switch to recycled Unifi REPREVE® yarn derived from post-consumer waste plastic in the primary and collar mesh, and recycled poly laces, both of which are moves to help reduce waste in the running shoe industry.

The best lightweight running shoe

New Balance Fresh Foam Beacon

The New Balance Fresh Foam Arishi v3 running shoes provide a super lightweight feel without sacrificing cushioned comfort, and they’re versatile enough to tackle both short and long runs.

Pros: Super lightweight, cushioned, comfortable upper, reflective, versatile for both short and long runs

Cons: Shorter lifespan for total mileage, runs small

If you’re looking for a neutral, lightweight running shoe with a cushioned feel, the New Balance Fresh Foam Arishi v3 is your go-to. The women’s model weighs in at a mere 6.2 ounces, which is significantly lighter than most other running shoes.

This weight seems impossible with all the foam cushioning involved. The magic lies in what’s known as Fresh Foam Ground Contact, the concave and convex hexagon material that makes up the sole, sculpted and shaped to provide cushion and stability where its needed most. It’s ultra-light yet still provides a soft and responsive feel.

The all-knit upper allows for comfort, breathability, and stretch. From heel to toe, there’s a 6mm drop, which is ideal for neutral runners. We also love the unique design feature of the ‘N’ logo being highly reflective, making for a safer dawn or dusk run.

The sole does have quite a bit of exposed foam, and while New Balance has strategically-placed lugs to keep the heel and forefoot supported, this design means this running shoe will last you more like 250 to 300 miles of running, as opposed to most other shoes’ lifespan of 500 miles.

Also, we found that the Arishi v3 run slightly small, so we recommend going half a size up for a comfortable fit.

Best running shoe for long runs

Under Armour HOVR Infinite

The Under Armour HOVR Infinite is specifically designed for long runs, with responsive cushioning, a durable outsole, and a built-in chip that tracks your running progress.

Pros: Cushioned comfort, responsive feel, durable outsole, gender-specific design, digitally connected to track running statistics

Cons: May need to size up, connectivity feature is currently only compatible with MapMyRun

If you’re logging longer and longer runs, the Under Armour HOVR are ideal for two reasons: its distance-specific design and built-in Record Sensor technology.

A neutral running shoe, the HOVR Infinite is marked by its high energy-return HOVR foam. This has just the right amount of cushion to keep your legs feeling fresh even as you pile on the miles, and offers responsiveness with each stride to help keep you moving with more ease. The outsole is made of blown rubber and carbon rubber for extra durability — a must for shoes expected to withstand high-mileage runs.

The HOVR Infinite are specifically designed for the anatomy of the female foot, as well, to deliver a tighter better fit with a contoured sock liner. We found them to be not only comfortable with a soft tongue and breathable mesh upper, but also very lightweight at 8.8 ounces.

The other stand-out feature for these shoes is Under Armour’s proprietary Record Sensor tech. This is a removable chip is embedded in the insole of the shoe to track your speed, distance, stride length, and cadence. This data can then be uploaded to the Under Armour MapMyRun app post-run, allowing you to view your stats in one place. The data only works on MapMyRun (for now) but we love that you can still track your miles if you don’t own a GPS watch or if you want to know your end mileage without being distracted by your split times on your wrist.

Even if you don’t care about the connectivity aspect, the shoe itself is still impressive. They clock in at $120, which is roughly the same as other running shoes on the market that don’t offer the same smart features.

Best shoe for winter runs

Fitness writer Mallory Creveling taking the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Shield out for a winter run.
Fitness writer Mallory Creveling taking the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Shield out for a winter run.

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Shield are incredibly comfortable, have great traction on icy roads, and keep your feet dry running through slush, snow, or rain.

Pros: Lightweight, springy, great waterproofing, superior traction

Cons: Can feel a little tight around the top of the midfoot, will feel narrow for wide feet

After testing 15 pairs of winter-specific running shoes, the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Shield is our top pick thanks to its road-specific design that provides a little bounce back with each stride you take. What’s more, the traction on these shoes replicates what you’d find on tires. The result is a ton of grip underfoot without the lugs normally required for such a hold, which is a very hard combo to find in running shoes.

These shoes kept fitness writer Mallory Creveling’s feet dry on snowy runs, as well as when splashed directly with water in a bathtub test of the shoes waterproofing capabilities. Despite being water-repellent, these shoes are still flexible and breathable.

These do have a unique feature of giving a squeeze of support from the upper, which can feel a little too tight at times. Creveling notes loosening the laces is a simple fix, but these probably won’t be comfortable for a wider foot shape.

Overall, these are running shoe you could wear every day year-round without having to worry about cold, wet, or uncomfortable feet through many chilly miles. –Rachael Schultz

How to shop for running shoes

While shopping, you’ll want to consider the type of running you plan to do. Do you intend on doing a lot of road racing? If so, a lightweight shoe should be your go-to. Perhaps you’re planning on embarking on long trail runs; you may want a shoe designed specifically for trail running.

If you’re looking for a simple training shoe for casual running, then durability won’t be a big concern. However, if you’re the type of runner who lives in their running shoes, finding a high-mileage shoe gives you the best quality for your money.

One of the biggest factors in which running shoe is right for you depends on whether your foot strike overpronates, supinates, or remains neutral.

When your foot strikes the ground, the arch of your foot is going to collapse to some degree, which then causes your ankle to roll inward. This concept is called pronation, and it is the most defining factor in what kind of support you need from your shoe.

Some people have a neutral footstrike, so they don’t need cushioning on either side. But most of us have a tendency to overpronate or supinate.

If you overpronate, your foot rolls inward when you run, and your body isn’t absorbing shock as efficiently. To help with this, you’ll want a more supportive motion-control shoe designed to correct your foot motion.

If you supinate, your foot doesn’t rolling in far enough. This causes the outside of your foot to take the brunt of the impact with every strike. If this is the case, you’ll want a more neutral-cushioned shoe that encourages natural foot motion.

This is one of the most important things to consider when buying running shoes, too — overpronation or supination often causes serious injury over time if not addressed.

The difference between women’s and men’s running shoes

What makes women’s running shoes different from men’s starts with foot shape. Women tend to have smaller heels in relation to the forefoot, so the shape of the shoe needs to be slightly different. A lower body mass also results in slightly less foam in the midsole of the shoe, while deeper grooves make it easier to flex the midsole when toeing off.

Men and women also have different Q-angles, or the angle of incidence between the quad muscle and the kneecap, as women generally have wider hips than men. This tends to cause pronation, which requires different types of cushioning.

One sneaker takes up to 40 years to decompose in a landfill. These 10 brands are changing that by making shoes from recycled and renewable materials.

Adidas Parley

  • Over 300 million pairs of sneakers are thrown out annually.
  • It can take 30 to 40 years for a pair to decompose in a landfill.
  • Learn about 10 sneaker brands using eco-friendly materials and more sustainable production methods.

The sneaker industry is bigger than ever, and its growth shows no signs of slowing.

More than 23 billion pairs of sneakers are produced every year, but behind the great demand for footwear is an industry so wasteful it’s almost beyond measure. Most of these new pairs use virgin plastic, rubber, and petroleum, producing alarming amounts of carbon dioxide. According to sneaker startup Nothing New, about 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown out every year and, on average, it takes 30-40 years for a pair to fully decompose in a landfill.

In the past, most shoppers would have put little thought into exactly how the items they bought were made, but that is no longer the case all around. In addition to demanding trendsetting styles and groundbreaking innovations, the educated consumers of today expect products to be made responsibly.

Sportswear retail expert Matt Powell explained to Insider that younger people are very concerned with how their purchases are affecting the environment. “Sustainability is an important theme in retail, so much so that younger consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products,” said Powell. “Brands have long been concerned about making products sustainably, but they’re being more forward and open about it.”

If you’re looking to make better, more sustainable choices, we hear you. We are too, which is why we rounded up this list of brands that are using innovative, eco-friendly materials and more sustainable production methods to make sneakers.

From performance sneakers made by popular brands like Nike and Adidas to fashion-forward trainers from startups like Everlane and Allbirds, you’ll find plenty of brands new and old working to set new standards.

Check out 10 brands making more sustainable sneakers:

Cariuma

Cariuma

Low Black Stripe Vintage Sneaker (small)

Founded in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, Cariuma is a sneaker brand that focuses on sustainability. The brand handmakes its sneakers using high-quality natural materials including organic fair-trade cotton, natural rubber from hevea brasiliensis trees, and leather from gold-rated tanneries using hides sourced from areas that weren’t deforested for cattle farming.

The brand ships its shoes directly in the shoebox, which eliminates the need for wasteful packaging. It also makes up for the carbon emissions associated with shipping products by purchasing carbon offsets, which brings its carbon footprint down to zero.

Cariuma’s sneakers have an old-school look, but with modern comfort. The insoles have a generous amount of memory foam, which make them easy to wear all day long.

Adidas x Parley

Adidas Parley AlphaBounce

Ultra Boost 20 (small, Preferred: Adidas)

When it comes to mainstream sportswear brands, Adidas is easily the most vocal about its sustainability efforts — and environmental organization Parley for the Oceans has been its biggest collaborator. The two brands teamed up for the first time in 2015 with a sneaker using yarn made from recycled ocean plastic and illegal deep-sea gill nets. They officially launched products to the public in 2016.

In 2020, Adidas made more than 20 million pairs of sneakers with Parley ocean plastic — a major increase from 11 million pairs in 2019 and 5 million pairs in 2018.

Today, you’ll find Parley’s recycled materials on everything from running sneakers like the Ultra 4D 5.0 and Ultra Boost to outdoor shoes like the Terrex Two.

Tread by Everlane

Tread by Everlane

The Trainer (Men’s) (small)The Trainer (Women’s) (small)

While recycled knits account for a big part of the sustainable sneakers market, Tread by Everlane is for those who still appreciate quality leather. With 94.2% non-virgin plastic soles, leather sourced from the world’s cleanest tannery, and laces and linings made from recycled plastic bottles, The Trainer is touted (by its maker, mind you) as the world’s lowest-impact sneakers.

Even if you aren’t a particularly conscious consumer (although you should be), Tread by Everlane has great appeal. Its style lends itself well to minimalists and lovers of that cut-and-sewn look found on retro running sneakers.

Reebok Cotton + Corn

Reebok NPC UK Cotton and Corn

Corn & Cotton Slip-On (small)

Reebok first launched the Cotton + Corn sneakers with the NPC UK sneaker. It originally featured leather accents on the heel tab, but after receiving kickback from Peta, the brand took the initiative to make the shoe completely vegan. The updated sneaker features a 100% cotton upper, a sole derived from corn, and insoles made from castor bean oil. Even the packaging is 100% recycled.

Now, Reebok is continuing vegan shoes with the Corn + Cotton Slip-On, a casual sneaker.

Nothing New

Nothing New Sneakers

Sneakers (small)

Founded in 2019, Nothing New is a sneaker startup that aims to positively impact the planet and educate the people that live on it. Unlike most brands on this list that are simply making strides to improve their eco-friendliness, sustainability is at the very core of the brand.

As the name suggests, Nothing New sneakers are made with only recycled materials. The upper is 100% post-consumer recycled plastic, while its other components are made from recycled cotton, fishing nets, rubber, and cork.

Beyond the production process, Nothing New offers $20 discounts on new pairs to those who send back their used sneakers. Depending on the condition of the sneakers, Nothing New will clean and donate them or break them down and put the materials back into its recycled supply chain.

Nike

NIKE SPACE HIPPIE

Cosmic Unity (small)

Over the last five decades, Nike has continually pushed boundaries in sportswear innovation. While performance has been at the forefront of its designs, sustainability has also been a major factor in recent years. Even though sustainability isn’t heavily incorporated into the brand’s marketing (compared to Adidas Parley or Allbirds), the brand’s work has not gone unnoticed.

In 2018, Nike was recognized by Textile Exchange as using the most recycled polyester in the industry for the sixth year in a row, and from 2010-2018, the brand transformed 6.4 billion plastic water bottles into recycled footwear or apparel.

Nike’s signature Flyknit material, which can be found on footwear throughout the brand’s catalog, is made in-part with recycled plastic, but the Swoosh is doing more than sustainable knits.

In 2019, Nike also launched sneakers made from Flyleather, a new material made from at least 50% recycled leather fiber. Although there haven’t been many other sneakers to release with Flyleather yet, you can expect the material to be included more often in future designs.

In 2020, Nike furthered its impact on sustainability by using recycled rubbers on midsoles and outsoles — a feature that could be seen on everything from Nike SBs to Converse. Some of the most notable use of materials made from recycled trash is the Nike Space Hippie collection and the new Cosmic Unity basketball shoe. In total, the brand has roughly 900 items available that are made from at least 20% recycled materials.

Converse Renew

Converse

Renew Chuck Taylor All Star Crater Knit (small)

The Chuck Taylor All-Stars are cemented in footwear as one of, if not the most timeless sneakers on the planet, but Converse has proven that it’s able to stay in touch with modern demands. Using 100% recycled plastic bottles to make up its canvas upper, the Renew Collection is the latest example of its commitment to produce more carefully.

The process starts with plastic bottles sourced by the US-based recycling company First Mile. The plastic is then ground up into flakes, melted, rolled into bales, spun into yarn, and weaved into canvas.

The best part about the Converse Renew collection is that shoes are fully customizable and are available in sizes from toddlers to adults.

Allbirds

Allbirds

Men’s Wool Runners (small)Women’s Wool Runners (small)

As the brainchild of New Zealand native Tim Brown and San Francisco-based renewables expert Joey Zwillinger, Allbirds is the wildly popular sneaker startup you’ve seen all throughout Silicon Valley and New York City. In the first four years, the brand reached a $77.5 million valuation — all thanks to its sustainable footwear.

Love them or hate them, all of Allbirds’ designs are undeniably unique and unmatched in comfort. The brand’s shoes are made with merino wool or eucalyptus trees for the uppers and sugar cane for the SweetFoam soles. They even made the patent on their SweetFoam material public so that other brands could utilize it as a sustainable alternative. Recycled plastic and castor bean oil also make their way into the inner-workings of the shoes. Allbirds even uses 90% post-consumer recycled cardboard for packaging that serves as a shoe box, shopping bag, and mailer all in one.

We’ve reviewed everything from the signature Wool Runners to the newer Tree Toppers and found them to be incredibly comfortable. Read all of our Allbirds reviews here.

Greats

Greats

Royale Knit (small)

Founded in 2014 by Ryan Babenzien and footwear designer Jon Buscemi, Greats began as an affordable alternative to the luxury sneaker market. The brand’s signature style, The Greats Royale, features premium leather, is manufactured in Italy, and only costs $179 — which far less than comparable high-end sneakers.

In efforts to be more eco-friendly, Greats redesigned the silhouette with a recycled plastic knit upper. Seven plastic bottles go into making each pair of Royale Knit sneakers, and in the initial production run alone, Greats removed 75,000 bottles from the ocean.

In addition to the recycled plastic uppers, Greats uses recycled materials to produce the shoe boxes and packaging.

Shop all Greats sneakers here.

Rothy’s

Rothy's

The Sneaker (small)

Founded in 2016, Rothy’s took over social media and the streets of New York and San Francisco with its recycled plastic flats for women. With such a heavy emphasis on sustainability, it was only right for the brand to start making other styles, including sneakers.

Aptly named “The Sneaker,” Rothy’s recycled plastic sneaker features a Vans-inspired slip-on look with a recycled plastic upper. Other eco-friendly elements of the shoe include recycled foam insoles, vegan, outsoles made from recyclable, carbon-free rubber and TPU, and vegan and non-toxic adhesives.

To date, Rothy’s has repurposed more than 35 million plastic water bottles in its footwear. For now, the brand only makes footwear for women and kids, so if you’re looking for shoes in men’s sizing, you’ll have to check out one of the other brands on this list.

We tested 3 styles of Hunter boots in varying weather – here’s what you should know about sizing, fit, and performance

Hunter rain boots review 4x3
  • A pair of fully waterproof, durable, and comfortable boots is a must during the rainy season.
  • Hunter boots, famous for its Original Tall Boot ($150) was created in 1856 and makes a variety of styles.
  • We tested three pairs of Hunter boots on the rainy streets of New York City and shared our reviews.

Hunter boots are a ubiquitous sighting on rainy days. Come gentle sprinkles or torrential downpours, you can expect to see a few pairs of these short and tall boots splashing through streets, no matter where you are.

The funny thing about Hunter’s rubber rain boots is that they have quite a simple design, yet they’re still so recognizable and iconic. An easy way to differentiate them from other brands is the Hunter label at the front opening of the boot, or by their rich color and glossy finish.

The history of Hunter boots

Hunter rain boots review_The history of Hunter boots

The classic boots have a rich history, going back to 1856. In Scotland, an American named Henry Lee Norris founded the North British Rubber Company (which later became Hunter) and made boots using a new patented process that created more durable rubber products. During both World Wars, the company was commissioned to create boots for soldiers.

In 1955, Hunter created the Original Green Wellington, otherwise known as the Original Tall Boot. The versatile, comfortable, and durable handcrafted style is still the brand’s most popular shoe.

Other than the Original Tall Boots, Hunter now makes a variety of boot styles for men, women, and children. It has also expanded into outerwear and bags.

The materials

Hunter rain boots review_The materials

Hunter Boots are made from natural latex rubber that’s flexible and waterproof – and in China and Southeast Asia.

Another reason to shop with the company is that it recycles old boots in the UK and donates fully functional boots to local nonprofits, particularly those that help victims of political conflict or natural disasters.

You can find Hunter boots at Nordstrom and Amazon, as well as the . Something you should consider when you’re deciding where to buy them is the . If you buy directly from Hunter, your boots are covered by a two-year warranty.

Here are our reviews after trying 3 pairs of Hunter rain boots:

A pair of adjustable, fashion-forward rain boots

Hunter rain boots review_Women's Refined Slim Fit Adjustable Short Gloss Rain Boots Black

These slick black boots are the perfect look for a rainy day, and I appreciate that they have fewer rubber layers so they feel particularly lightweight. They do the simple job of keeping my feet dry, and the adjustable strap at the top can be tightened for added protection against serious downpours.

But they’re not the most comfortable to wear. I got my standard size (9), and my heel rubs up against the back of the shoes while I walk. I’d consider sizing up, especially if you plan to wear them with socks thicker than your everyday pair, but Hunter currently only offers full sizes. If you’re an 8.5 or even an 8, these may be the perfect fit for you. For me, I’ll probably stick to my Everlane rain boots – despite how much heavier they are. -Mara Leighton, Insider Reviews senior reporter

Refined Slim Fit Adjustable Short Gloss Rain Boots (small)

A pair of classic canary yellow boots

Hunter rain boots review_Original Short Waterproof Rain Boot

When all the dreary days of winter seem to blend together, sometimes all you need is a pop of color to brighten your day. At least, that was my reasoning behind choosing these yellow boots that would also help me stand out from a pack of black-clad New Yorkers.

The color, durability, and comfort of the boots make me instantly excited to trek through the rain, even though this California girl generally hates any precipitation. They feel sturdy, but they’re not too heavy, and the outsole has a secure tread.

You should be fine with your usual size. I found while wearing my normal socks that there was a good amount of wiggle room, so once weather conditions really become dire, you’ll be able to wear thick socks to stay warm. If you have thick calves, you should consider these shorter boots versus Hunter’s classic tall style. Tall boots can sometimes be difficult for me to take off, but I could put on and take off the pair above easily without worrying about being stuck in them. -Connie Chen, Insider Reviews senior reporter

Original Short Gloss Waterproof Rain Boot (small)

A pair of insulated boots to keep your legs really warm

Hunter rain boots review_Hunter Original Tall Insulated Rain Boots

As far as warmth goes, these boots are all you need for a cold, wet day – they even work well in the snow. I put a pair of shearling insoles in mine for added softness and warmth around my toes, but the faux-shearling liner keeps my legs perfectly cozy. As far as insulation goes, I’ve literally walked on the beach in a 30-something degree day while letting ocean water lap over the boots, and my feet stayed perfectly warm and dry.

One thing to note about sizing, though, is that Hunter’s tall boots have pretty narrow calves. I have this pair in a wide-leg size, which the company no longer makes, but they do have a shorter mid-calf pair that works well even for wide calves.

Another thing to note is that the rim of the boots may hit the back of your thigh a bit as you go up and down the stairs. I’m a little over 5 feet tall, and this is an issue I have with any stiff knee-high boots, but if you’re any taller than 5-foot-3-inches, you should be fine. Overall, these are a really warm upgrade to Hunter’s OG tall boots. -Sally Kaplan, Insider Reviews deputy editor
