Walmart and Gap are collaborating on a new product line of home essentials.
Gap Home will roll out on Walmart.com on June 24, and will feature products ranging in price from $15.88 to $64.98. Bedding, bath, and home décor will all be featured in the line.
Home goods have moved increasingly to the forefront during the pandemic, with consumers staying indoors to work and entertain. Now, Walmart and Gap are teaming up to provide new offerings in that space, for shoppers looking to touch up or overhaul their home’s design.
“Obviously, during the pandemic the home is more important to our customers’ lives than it ever has been,” Anthony Soohoo, Walmart’s executive vice president of the home category, told Insider in an interview
“Since our customers needed to spend more time at home, we saw a huge need for them to be able to get affordable styles to decorate their spaces,” he added.
Walmart and Gap began talking about a partnership at the end of 2020, Soohoo said. Around six months passed between the point that the companies agreed to work together and the line’s launch date. Soohoo said that the “lines blurred” between the collaborating Walmart and Gap teams, despite the lack of “in-person meetings” during the pandemic.
“I think that’s unprecedented when you think about companies at our scale working with outside partnership on a line that is exclusive and multi-year,” he said.
He said Gap Home features a “neutral” and “inclusive” style, and focuses on sustainability by featuring organic cotton and recycled materials.
“Our mission is to make a beautiful home possible for everyone. In my mind, it delivers across style in terms of offering timeless signature styles in a modern way,” Soohoo said.
Gap Home will continue to introduce seasonal and special collections throughout 2021.
“Walmart is a global leader in the home space with extensive digital reach and distribution, and this partnership enables Gap to introduce a new category in a smart, scalable way,” Gap President and CEO Mark Breitbard said in a statement sent to Insider.
Soohoo told Insider that he believes that Walmart’s ubiquitous presence and Gap’s “timeless style” add a lot of “mainstream appeal” for the new line.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be part of this where we’re really putting together two of the world’s most iconic brands and we’re going to make it come alive as part of the partnership,” he said. “We’re going to be able to deliver really signature styles in a new product category for the first time.”
