  • Amazon Prime Day, landing June 21 and 22, has become another Black Friday.
  • As a result of Prime Day’s success, many retailers, including Best Buy and Walmart, offer their own competing sales.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Amazon Prime Day will be celebrating its seventh year in 2021. What started as a one-day shopping event in July 2015 has now become a multi-day affair with a wide range of stores hosting competing sales.

When Amazon Prime Day debuted in 2015, Walmart – Amazon’s largest competitor – held its own major sales event the same week. Since then, many more retailers have joined in what’s developed into the largest shopping event of the year outside of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But it makes sense, as the pressure of over 150 million US shoppers with Prime memberships spending their money at Amazon over the course of a few days has prompted competitors to host concurrent sales.

This year, major retailers are once again lining up to compete with Amazon Prime Day deals. Target, Walmart, and Kohl’s were the first to announce their competing sales, but we expect more details to be announced as we get closer to Amazon Prime Day.

We’ve answered some frequently asked questions regarding these competing Amazon Prime Day sales below.

Here’s a list of what to expect from competing Amazon Prime Day 2021 sales:

Walmart

Walmart+ Delivery Unlimited 2

Walmart’s ‘Deals for Days’ event will run from June 20 to 23 — a day before and lasting a day longer than Amazon Prime Day.

So far, Walmart Plus members don’t get any exclusive perks during ‘Deals for Days.’ For those unfamiliar, Walmart Plus is the retail giant’s answer to a Prime membership. It offers unlimited same-day delivery for 160,000 items and costs $98 a year, about $20 less than one year of Amazon Prime.

What will be on sale?

For 2021, we’ll likely see steep discounts on everything from entertainment and tech to kitchen appliances and video games during the ‘Deals for Days’ event. Here are some we know of ahead of time:

AirPods Pro (medium)Roomba 670 Robot Vacuum (medium, Preferred: Walmart)
Target

target store

The ‘Target Deal Days’ event lands on June 20 and ends on June 22. That’s a day before Amazon Prime Day and a day shorter than Walmart’s ‘Deals for Days’ event.

Starting June 16-19, you can pick up a digital Target GiftCard for 5% off at Target.com. It’s an excellent chance to save a little bit more money if you plan on shopping the ‘Deal Days’ event.

What will be on sale?

Target’s previous event included $50 off the iRobot Roomba 695, $150 off the Dyson V8 Motorhead, and $100 off a Samsung 50-inch The Frame 4K Smart TV.

This year, look for deep discounts on tech, smart home, gaming, and many more product categories.

Maker (medium, Preferred: Target)Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe Upright Vacuum (medium)
Best Buy

best buy

Best Buy’s ‘Bigger Deal Savings Event’ starts well before the competition — it’ll take place from June 15 to 22. This is unprecedented: Best Buy’s previous Prime Day sales started and ended with Amazon’s sale.

Best Buy’s competing Prime Day discounts are open to all shoppers. However, My Best Buy rewards members may avail of exclusive savings or early access to deals. (Not a member? It’s free to sign up.)

What will be on sale?

Best Buy’s current ‘Bigger Deal Savings Event’ promotions include up to $250 off select gaming laptopsup to 50% off small kitchen appliances, and up to $400 off select Samsung Galaxy phones. Browse all of the event’s ongoing deals here

Kohl’s

kohl's store

Kohl’s ‘Wow Deals’ event will be held in-stores and online for the duration of Amazon Prime Day: June 21 through 22.

Sale shoppers can also earn $10 in Kohl’s Cash for every $50 spent during ‘WOW Deals.’ That’s free money you get to spend on future purchases. Kohl’s Card holders can also get an additional 15% off on the event’s deals and promotions.

What will be on sale?

A sneak peek of the offers from ‘Wow Deals’ include a $150 Google Nest Hello Doorbell, $200 Shark Ion Robot Vacuum, and a $200 Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum — all of which earn $30 of Kohl’s Cash.

During its competing Prime Day sale last year, Kohl’s offered a Ninja Foodi 5-in-1 Indoor Grill for $200 — and sweetened the deal by adding $30 Kohl’s Cash. Look for notable savings on kitchen wares, bedding, furniture, and other home goods.

Bed Bath & Beyond

bed bath & beyond

Bed Bath & Beyond’s Fall Sale featured up to 60% off bedding, 30% off curtains and rugs, and 25% off fall decor. Shoppers also received $50 in My Funds Rewards (valid for 30 days) on purchases over $200.

Expect more of the same this year from Bed Bath & Beyond’s competing Prime Day sale. For extra savings, get a one-year Beyond+ membership for $29 and enjoy 20% off and free standard shipping on all orders. You may be able to effectively make that Beyond+ membership free if Bed Bath & Beyond includes a $29 bonus card with sign-up, like it did during last year’s sale.

What will be on sale?

Standout offers from last year’s sale included $25 off a Le Creuset Tea Kettle and $50 off a Zwilling 8-inch chef’s knife. This year, expect to find offers on bedding, decor, small appliances, and robot vacuums.

Home Depot

Home Depot

Home Depot’s concurrent Prime Day 2020 sale saw up to 50% off interior furniture, decor, and kitchenware. Its other main event, the Fall Appliance Sale, was also ongoing and lasted through October 21.

Since Amazon Prime Day is expected to return this summer, it’s likely to overlap with some of Home Depot’s summertime specials. This may be a boon for anyone looking to buy indoor furniture, as mid-summer specials tend to yield the best deals for those items.

What will be on sale?

Last year’s Home Depot sale featured up to 30% off select power tools and small appliances, up to 40% off select bathroom vanities, and up to 50% off select interior furniture. Expect similar sales for 2021.

FAQs

When is Amazon Prime Day 2021?

Amazon Prime Day has been hinted to make a return in June or July. It usually falls in the middle of July, but the pandemic pushed last year’s Prime Day to mid-October — right before the launch of Black Friday specials.

Are Amazon Prime Day deals worth it?

Short answer: it depends on what you’re shopping for.

To expand upon that, Amazon Prime Day is, first and foremost, an Amazon event. That means the strongest offers will be on Amazon products like its Echo smart speakers, Amazon Music Unlimited subscriptions, and Amazon-brand groceries.

With major retailers like Walmart, Kohl’s and Target running competing sales alongside Prime Day, you have some leeway to shop around for better deals on what you need.

Can anyone buy Amazon Prime Day deals?

Amazon Prime Day deals are for Amazon Prime members only. Fortunately, if you’re not a member yet and aren’t keen to purchase a full membership, you can take advantage of a free 30-day trial with full benefits. However, a Prime membership comes with a plethora of benefits that you can take advantage of year-round so it’s worth signing up if you shop Amazon often.

The appeal of competing Prime Day deals, however, is that they’re open to the general public. Stores like Walmart may peddle its own membership offers, but outside of Amazon Prime Day these sales are otherwise inclusive.

  • Nintendo is dropping the price on several games through its eShop during its Digital Deals event.
  • Numerous titles, including “Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition” and “Fire Emblem: Three Houses,” are currently down to their lowest prices ever through June 21.
  • Buying outside of Nintendo’s eShop offers one major benefit: more Gold Points.

Right now, you can find popular titles, like “Hades,” “Cuphead,” “Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition,” and “Fire Emblem: Three Houses,” down to their lowest prices ever during Nintendo’s “Digital Deals” sale.

Suffice it to say, this is a perfect opportunity to fill up your Switch’s digital library. However, shoppers should consider shopping on Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart first.

Here’s why: If you buy a digital game through the retail giant instead of Nintendo’s proprietary eShop, you’ll get the maximum amount of Gold Points even if you purchased it on sale. eShop, however, will only credit you for the price you paid.

For those unfamiliar, Gold Points are a digital currency that can be earned by purchasing eligible games or downloadable content. Nintendo says points are awarded based on “5% of the amount you pay,” and can be used as credit for future, eligible purchases.

This sale ends June 21.

The best early Prime Day deals on laptops that are already going on

Amazon Prime Day 2020 Best Prime day Laptop Deals 2x1

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Amazon Prime Day 2021 kicks off next week, and we’re expecting to see plenty of notable deals on laptops. The annual Amazon shopping holiday takes place from June 21 through June 22 this year, bringing discounts on everything from electronics to home decor, apparel, beauty products, pet supplies, and much more.

Although Prime Day is an Amazon shopping holiday, don’t forget to check out other retailers as well. Competitors like Target and Walmart are hosting their own shopping events at the same time, and we’re likely to see compelling discounts from other retailers like Best Buy as well.

And of course, you’ll need an Amazon Prime membership to get access to Amazon’s Prime Day deals.

The best Amazon Prime Day deals on laptops right now

We typically see discounts on laptops across many categories on Prime Day, from MacBooks to gaming laptops, Chromebooks, and Windows devices. See below for the best laptop deals we’ve found so far on Amazon leading up to Prime Day.

The best Amazon deals on MacBook laptops happening now

Prime Day isn’t here just yet, but we’re already seeing some Amazon deals on MacBook laptops. The MacBook Air with M1, which happens to be our favorite Apple laptop, is currently available at a discount along with the M1-powered MacBook Pro. Both of these laptops offer impressive gains in performance and battery life compared to their Intel-equipped predecessors. We’re hoping to see deeper discounts as Prime Day gets closer.

New MacBook Air (M1) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)MacBook Pro with M1 Processor (13-inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

The best Amazon deals on Windows laptops happening now

Windows laptops are best for those who want more flexibility than Apple’s Mac laptops have to offer. Windows devices come in various sizes and many of them have 2-in-1 designs that allow them to function as both laptops and tablets.

We’re not seeing too many deals on Windows laptops at the moment, but we’re expecting that more discounts will Surface as Prime Day gets closer.

Gram (Intel 10th Gen Core i5, 8GB) (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

The best Amazon deals on Chromebooks happening now

Chromebooks are best for those who just want an affordable, lightweight laptop for browsing the web and working in Google’s suite of apps.

They’re usually less expensive than Windows laptops since they come with limitations when working offline. That being said, Chromebooks have improved a lot in recent years and certain models now come with faster processors and the ability to install Android apps from the Google Play Store.

Learn more about how to decide whether a Chromebook is the right laptop for you.

Chromebook Flip C434 (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

The best Amazon deals on gaming laptops happening now

Gaming laptops almost always cost more than standard laptops, which is why it’s important to look for discounts. Our favorite gaming laptop right now is the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, which offers noteworthy performance and battery life packed into a stunning design. Check out our guide to the best gaming laptops for more buying advice and tips on what to look when shopping.

Area-51m (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

What are the best laptops to buy in 2021?

Our favorite laptop is the Dell XPS 13, which strikes an excellent balance between fast performance and elegant design. It runs on Intel’s latest 11th-generation processors and features a vivid display with super-slim borders around the edges that enabled Dell to cram a 13-inch screen into what feels like an 11-inch laptop casing. The new model usually starts at $930.

The 2020 MacBook Air with M1 is our favorite Apple laptop. Apple’s M1 processor brings significantly faster speeds and longer battery life to Apple’s most portable laptop at a usual starting price of $1,000. We chose it over the M1-powered MacBook Pro because it’s cheaper and sleeker than the Pro while offering similar performance and configuration options.

If you’re looking for a Chromebook, the Google Pixelbook Go is your best bet. With a typical starting price of $649, it’s pricier than many Chromebooks and for good reason. It has a comfortable and quiet keyboard, long battery life, and a 1080p webcam – a rare find even on laptops twice the price.

Check out our full guide to the best laptops for more buying advice.

How to buy a laptop

When choosing a laptop, the most important factors to consider are how much you’re willing to spend, screen size, performance, and storage.

For a general use laptop, we’d recommend a notebook with an Intel Core i3 or Intel Core i5 processor and at least 8GB of RAM. If you’re primarily using your device for tasks like web browsing, word processing, managing spreadsheets, and watching videos, you don’t need a more powerful processor like an Intel Core i7.

Most of these laptops will have integrated graphics rather than standalone graphics processing units (GPU). That’s sufficient for general use laptops, but those looking for a gaming laptop for a video editing machine will want a more powerful GPU.

Chromebooks, on the other hand, are designed to primarily be used with an internet connection, so they often have less memory and storage than your typical Windows or Mac laptop.

The most common laptop size is 13 inches, but you can also find laptops in larger 15-inch sizes or more compact 11-inch sizes.

Check out our full guide for more advice on how to choose the right laptop.

Sony’s WF-1000XM4 are the best wireless noise-cancelling earbuds you can buy, but they’re pricey at $280

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 outside of their case on a glass table
The WF-1000XM4 are Sony’s latest true wireless earbuds.

  • Sony’s WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds come highly recommended.
  • Their sound quality and noise cancellation are second to none, and they have long battery life.
  • At $280, they’re premium earbuds designed for listeners willing to pay extra for the best performance.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickyWF-1000XM4 (small)

If their $280 price tag didn’t already suggest as much, Sony’s WF-1000XM4 are a high-end pair of wireless earbuds. Indeed, they’re even more expensive than Apple’s $250 AirPods Pro. At this price, the WF-1000XM4 are geared toward buyers who are willing to pay a premium for excellent sound quality and functionality.

In exchange for your wallet’s depletion, you get class-leading noise cancellation, water resistance, a wireless charging case, 24 hours of total battery life, good phone call quality in noisy places, comfortable ear tips, and phenomenal audio quality.

They aren’t perfect, though. In particular, they’re missing the Bluetooth Multipoint feature that lets you connect the buds to two devices at the same time, like a laptop and a phone. But, if you can afford them, the WF-1000XM4 are easily the best wireless earbuds in their price range.

Sony WF-1000XM4 specifications

Sony WF-1000XM4 Specs
Drivers 6mm
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.2
Codecs SBC, AAC, LDAC
Battery life Eight hours continuous music playback with ANC on; 12 hours with ANC off; 16 hours battery charge in wireless charging case
Charging USB-C, wireless
Water resistance IPX4
App Sony Headphones app for iOS and Android

Design and comfort

The WF-1000XM4 have a sleek and modern design available in black and Sony’s take on the color silver, which looks more like a beige. They’re not the most compact wireless earbuds we’ve tried, but they’re discreet enough that they don’t stick out of your ears.

The wireless charging case is fairly standard in size and function. It features a USB-C port on the back, and the wireless charging surface is located on the bottom.

You get three earbud tips in different sizes, including small, medium, and large. The WF-1000XM4’s eartips are made of a polyurethane foam rather than the usual soft silicone tips we typically see in earbuds. Sony says the foam helps isolate noise and “improves adhesion to the ear canal” by maximizing the surface contact area between the tip and your ear canal. I’m inclined to agree; due to their ear-plug style and foam tips, the WF-1000XM4 stay in my ears more securely than most earbuds I’ve tried.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 ear buds in the palm of someones hand
The earbuds feature a sleek design with foam tips.

Still, while the foam tips might be great for a secure fit, I wonder how long they’ll last after some wear and tear, as foam doesn’t seem as durable as silicone tips. That said, we haven’t faced any issues yet.

It’s also worth considering whether you prefer lighter fitting tips like those found on the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds or AirPods Pro. Those don’t fit as securely as the XM4’s ear-plug style, but they are more comfortable.

Something else to note – the Sony Headphones app measures whether the tip size you’re using makes a good seal in your ears, but I found that feature to be inaccurate. The app said the medium size tips created a good seal, but noise-cancelling performance was better with the larger size.

Sound quality

The Sony WF-1000XM4 are at the top of their class here, and their sound quality is unbeatable for wireless earbuds. Sound is clear, rich, and extraordinarily well balanced for all sorts of music out of the box. That’s to say they don’t have a flat studio sound – instead, they offer a pleasing balance of bass, mids, and highs that delivers for both softer and exciting music.

To be sure, the way sound actually sounds is subjective – some like more bass while others look for less, among other preferences. With that in mind, you may not actually like the way the WF-1000XM4 sound out of the box. If that’s the case, you can use the EQ settings in the Sony Headphones app to further shape the sound profile to your liking. This makes the WF-1000XM4 versatile for listeners with different tastes.

To test the WF-1000XM4, I listened to several tracks in a wide variety of genres, including classical, jazz, flamenco, reggae, rock/metal, and electronic.

Noise cancellation

I tested noise cancellation under a bridge where a major highway ran above me. The average decibel level with the highway’s traffic was around 75, and when cars drove by, the decibel level would jump to 88.

Noise cancellation is excellent on the WF-1000XM4, and they’re certainly among the top performing noise-cancelling earbuds we’ve tried. They easily handle lower frequency rumbles and do away with a surprising amount of higher frequency noise, too.

It’s a tough call between the WF-1000XM4 and the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds, as both are comparable. Without a doubt, the WF-1000XM4 will make any commute or location quieter and significantly more comfortable. Plus, noise-cancelling technology in general lets you hear music better at lower volumes, which reduces the risk of hearing loss over time.

Battery life

A single Sony WF-1000XM4 earbud on a glass table
The WF-1000XM4 can get up to 24 hours of battery life with noise cancellation when combined with the included charging case.

Battery life is rated by Sony at eight hours on the buds themselves with ANC, which is class-leading. Combined with the 16 hours of charge in the case, you get 24 hours total. With noise cancellation off, Sony says you can get up to 12 hours with just the buds. And for phone calls, the company says you can get five and a half hours of talk time. A five-minute charge delivers an hour’s worth of listening time, the company claims.

We’re still figuring out the best way to test these claims, but so far, I have no reason to believe that Sony’s numbers are off.

Phone calls

Sony improved the tech for phone calls in the WF-1000XM4 with bone conduction and beamforming technology to better pick up your voice.

I tested phone calls under the same highway bridge where I tested noise cancellation. I called someone to see whether they could hear me comfortably among all the traffic noise. The person I called could easily hear me without noticing any ambient noise, but cars whooshing by were still audible to the callee. She was able to hear and understand me, but said that it could be problematic in a busy city, where cars are constantly driving past pedestrians.

The WF-1000XM4 also work great for video calls, which is worth noting since Apple’s AirPods Pro are notoriously bad for video calls.

App and other features

The Sony Headphones app is comprehensive, but it could do with a cleanup to make it easier to use. Odd language like “Suppresses headphone battery consumption” when you turn off noise-cancelling could be reworded to “Saves battery life” to make the feature easier to understand.

Otherwise, the WF-1000XM4 have ample features. I was dubious about “Speak to Chat” in my Sony WH-1000XM4 review, but I’ve grown to like the feature. It automatically turns on Ambient Sound mode to amplify ambient noise when the earbuds detect that you’re talking. It’s a great feature if you’re in the zone listening to music with noise-cancelling enabled, and someone is trying to get your attention. Just saying “what’s up” (or anything else) lets you hear what the person is saying. Once you’re done speaking, the earbuds return to whatever setting you had.

You’ll also find the equalizer in the app, which, while a little involved, is truly excellent. The WF-1000XM4 have a malleable sound and are eager to please. You also get options for giving priority to sound quality or a stable wireless connection, but I’ve never felt the need to enable the latter. You can also enable or disable Sony’s DSEE Extreme feature that upscales compressed music (most music you stream, unless it’s from high fidelity services like Tidal). More often than not, it’s hard to tell if it makes a difference. I usually leave these kinds of upscaling features off to prevent additional processing.

Sony boasted improved wind noise reduction with the WF-1000XM4, but this feature is in dire need of tweaking. It does seem to work, but it also seems to reduce or disable regular noise cancellation, which lets in ambient noise. You’re basically replacing one evil with another. Plus, you need to enable the wind reduction mode in the app, and there’s no way to enable it by tapping the touch sensors on the buds.

And finally, there’s Sony’s 360 Reality Audio. It supposedly delivers surround sound, but it only works with an utterly limited number of apps, including Deezer, Artist Connection, nugs.net, and Tidal. This feature shouldn’t be a consideration when you’re thinking about buying the WF-1000XM4.

Outside of the app, the WF-1000XM4 have an IPX4 water-resistance rating, making them a suitable option if you want wireless earbuds for working out, or anticipate using them outdoors when there’s a chance of rain.

Drawbacks

Unfortunately, the WF-1000XM4 don’t offer Bluetooth Multipoint. This feature lets you connect to two devices simultaneously, and there were times during my testing when I wished it was included.

I found myself watching a video on my laptop with the WF-1000XM4 and getting a call on my phone, but I couldn’t use the earbuds for the call because they were only connected to my laptop. You can switch the connection to another device fairly easily, but not quickly enough for unexpected events like a phone call.

To be fair, most wireless earbuds don’t have this functionality, save for Apple’s AirPods that easily switch between other Apple devices, and Jabra’s Elite 75T and 85T wireless earbuds. If that kind of functionality is important to you in noise-cancelling headphones, your best bet will be one of those aforementioned earbuds, or full-size headphones, like Sony’s excellent WH-1000XM4 or the Bose 700.

Should you buy the Sony WF-1000XM4?

The Sony WF-1000XM4 in their case in the palm of a hand
Sony’s WF-1000XM4 are an excellent choice for buyers who want high-end wireless earbuds.

If sound quality and noise cancellation are important to you, and $280 is within your budget, you should absolutely buy the Sony WF-1000XM4.

What are your alternatives?

If you know you don’t like ear-plug style earbuds, the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds are nearly identical in performance, and they have a lighter fit. Just note, they’re not water resistant.

Otherwise, for about $100 less than the Sony WF-1000XM4, the Jabra Elite 85T come highly recommended, and they include Bluetooth Multipoint tech for connecting to multiple devices, too.

The bottom line

Almost all wireless earbuds offer a more lightweight and compact experience compared to on-ear or over-ear headphones, but very, very few wireless earbuds are as good as the WF-1000XM4.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, impressive noise cancellation, long battery life, wireless charging case, comfortable fit, water resistance, versatile and malleable sound for personal preference

Cons: Can’t connect to more than one device at a time (Bluetooth Multipoint), pricey

The best early Prime Day 2021 deals on Amazon devices – Echo Buds are already up to 33% off

Amazon Echo Buds 2nd Gen in Woman's Ears - Early Prime Day Deals on Amazon Products
Amazon’s Echo Buds are on sale right now ahead of Prime Day.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Amazon Prime Day 2021 will begin on June 21 and run through June 22. We’re expecting tons of deals on tech across all categories, and shoppers can already find early Prime Day discounts on select Amazon devices.

Amazon’s brand-new second-generation Echo Buds are now down to their lowest price yet. Other Amazon devices, like Fire TV Edition smart TVs and a couple Kindle bundles, are available with early Prime Day deals as well.

Prime Day is traditionally one of the best times to find an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot on sale, and a few models are available for modest discounts already. That said, we anticipate better Echo device and speaker deals when Prime Day officially starts.

To shop Prime Day deals, you need to be an Amazon Prime member. Prime subscriptions cost $13 a month or $120 a year. The service offers tons of perks, including free two-day shipping on many items.

Prime Monthly Subscription (small)

Best early Prime Day Echo Buds deals

Amazon just released its second-generation Echo Buds in May, and the new wireless earbuds are already $40 off ahead of Prime Day 2021. The Echo Buds with wired charging case are down to $80, while the Echo Buds with wireless charging case are available for $100.

The second-generation earbuds have a sleeker design and improved noise cancellation compared to the older model. Senior Tech Correspondent Lisa Eadicicco was impressed by the improvements Amazon made, and said the Echo Buds are “a great choice for anyone in search of affordable wireless earbuds that don’t compromise on features like noise cancellation and customization.” You can find our Amazon Echo Buds 2 review here.

Top early Prime Day Echo smart speaker deals

Echo devices are some of the most popular smart speakers on the market, and they’re often available for some of their lowest prices during Prime Day. Though select Echo speakers were recently up to 30% off, that discount has now expired.

We expect big deals on speakers once Prime Day begins. Right now, however, you can find a modest $5 discount on fourth- and third-generation Echo Dots.

The fourth-generation Echo Dot offers new spherical design and slightly improved sound quality. That said, if the third-generation Echo Dot dips down to a sale price that’s significantly less than the fourth-gen model, we think it offers a better value.

Best early Prime Day Fire TV Edition smart TV deals

Amazon’s Fire TV operating system comes built right into a number of smart TVs from Toshiba and Insignia. This enables simple streaming access with the same interface you’d see on a separate Fire TV Stick or Cube.

Both brands sell 4K, 1080p, and 720p Fire TV displays in a range of screen sizes, and many of these models are on sale right now ahead of Prime Day. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that all of these displays are considered entry-level TVs. They’ll get the job done for casual viewing, but for better picture quality and speedier smart TV performance, we recommend stepping up to a mid-range model from brands like TCL, Vizio, Samsung, or LG.

Though we don’t typically recommend TVs with 720p screens, the benefits of higher resolutions are hard to see on screen sizes under 43 inches. If you’re looking for a smaller TV in the 32- or 24-inch range for a bedroom or other secondary location, an inexpensive Fire HDTV could offer solid value, especially when they’re discounted. If you’re going bigger than 32-inches, however, it’s worth paying more for a 4K model.

Top early Prime Day Kindle deals

Amazon’s Kindle devices are some of our favorite e-readers, and we expect deals across the entire lineup when Prime Day begins. Though there are no early deals on Kindle models right now, you can snag a discount if you purchase a Kindle bundle with a case and power adapter.

The Paperwhite Essential Bundle includes a leather cover and a power adapter for charging, while the Kindle Kids Edition Essential Bundle adds a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, along with a cover, charger, and screen protector.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2021?

Amazon Prime Day 2021 will start on June 21. The two-day sales event will run through June 22. We’ll be keeping track of the best deals throughout the sale, so check back for the latest discounts.

Prime Day deals are exclusive to Amazon Prime subscribers, so you’ll need to sign up to get deals on Amazon devices. Amazon Prime costs $13 a month or $120 per year, but new users can get their first 30 days of Prime for free.

The newest Nook tablet isn’t as sharp or fast as Amazon’s Fire HD 10, but it’s the best for people who want the biggest selection of books and apps

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Barnes & Noble and Lenovo's Nook Tablet leaning against a brick wall
Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet is a 10-inch tablet that is best for reading and watching movies.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickyNook 10-inch HD Tablet Designed with Lenovo (small)

Barnes & Noble was late to enter the e-reader market, coming two years after Amazon released its first Kindle. But with its newest Nook tablet, the bookseller is making up for lost time.

Barnes & Noble partnered with PC maker Lenovo to release an inexpensive 10-inch Android tablet with a focus on the reading experience. Without question, this Nook is a solid alternative to Amazon’s tablets, especially the Fire HD 10.

Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook tablet offers a sturdy aluminum construction and full integration with the Barnes & Noble reading apps for an affordable price of $129.99. But the Nook’s biggest selling point is that – unlike the Amazon Fire tablets – it runs on the full Android 10 operating system with access to the Google Play Store.

The screen on the Nook isn’t as sharp as the Fire HD 10, nor is the tablet particularly powerful. But it’s a great tablet for anyone on a budget interested in streaming video or reading books across multiple apps.

Specs

Nook 10-inch HD Tablet Designed with Lenovo Specs
Display 10.1-inch,1280 x 800, 149 pixels-per-inch
Processor MediaTek Helio P22T Tab
Cameras 8-megapixel rear, 5-megapixel front
Memory and storage 2GB RAM, 32GB of storage expandable up to 256GB
Battery Estimated up to 11 hours
Ports USB-C, microSD slot, headphone jack, smart connector

Design and display

The back of Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet
The Barnes & Noble and Lenovo Nook Tablet has a smooth aluminum casing.

The new Nook is basically just the Lenovo Tab M10 HD stuffed with Nook applications. By looking at the box, you might not know that you were getting a Nook at all. That’s because it displays the Lenovo Tab M10 HD’s image without a single mention of Barnes & Noble or the Nook. It’s clear that this is an Android tablet first, and a Nook second.

The tablet has thin side bezels with slightly thicker borders at the top and bottom of its smooth aluminum casing. There’s a smart connector on the left, though Barnes & Noble currently doesn’t sell any accessories that take advantage of it.

The tablet’s 10.1-inch display only has a resolution of 1280 x 800. This is the one area in which the Amazon Fire HD 10 has a clear advantage over the Nook. The Kindle Fire HD 10 features a full 1080p display at 224 pixels-per-inch, while the Nook is stuck at 149 pixels-per-inch. Even the $90 Kindle Fire HD 8 – at 189 pixels-per-inch – offers more in this regard than the Nook.

Words on the Nook are certainly legible, and the low resolution doesn’t affect the reading or viewing experience too much. But it’s definitely noticeable – especially for people who are coming from iPhones, iPads, and other devices with sharper screens. Like many tablets, the new Nook has a blue light filter, which is especially useful on a tablet like this that’s designed for reading.

The Nook is noticeably lighter than the Fire HD 10 – coming in at 14.8 ounces versus the 16.4 ounces of the Fire – which means it won’t weigh down your bag.

Nook Features and reading experience

Reading a page from a book on Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet
You can also download the Kindle app from the Google Play Store on the new Nook tablet in addition to using the Nook app for reading.

Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s tablet is mostly an Android tablet, but it does have some Nook-specific features. The home screen features two prominent widgets that display your Nook user profile along with what you are currently reading, along with a separate widget showcasing your recent book purchases.

There are also three black-and-white icons pinned to the bottom of the home screen: Library, Bookstore, and Current Read. The Library app houses your Nook books collection, the bookstore sends you to Barnes & Noble’s online bookstore, and Current Read launches the book you’re currently reading. You can easily rearrange or disable these apps, but can’t delete them.

Despite the low screen resolution, reading on the Nook is pleasant. The tablet is great to hold, and the Google Play store offers just about any reading app you might need – including the Kindle. That’s right, you can read your Kindle books on the Nook. All you have to do is download the app and sign in.

Both the Nook and Kindle apps offer similar reading experiences – so much so that it’s sometimes easy to forget which app you are using. They both feature tons of adjustable font sizes, styles and margins. The Kindle app allows for a few more customization options than the Nook, such as two additional font choices and more background colors.

But both apps can estimate the amount of the time left in a chapter or the entire book and display page numbers where supported.

Which app you use really depends on where you purchase most of your books. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both offer expansive ebook collections, with new releases heading to both platforms.

What sets this Nook apart from its Amazon counterpart is that it’s an excellent platform-agnostic e-reader. As an e-book enthusiast with a robust collection across multiple platforms, the ability to download multiple e-reading apps on the Google Play Store is an absolute gamechanger. I can read all of my books on this Nook, no matter where they come from, at a fraction of the cost of an iPad or more robust Android tablet.

Unlike Nook’s tablet, Amazon’s Fire tablets are firmly locked into the Amazon ecosystem. For example, it’s not possible to download the Nook app onto a Fire device from the Amazon App Store.

The selection of library apps and other e-reader apps is also severely limited on Amazon’s tablet. Apps like the library app Libby, comic reader Marvel Unlimited, browsers like Google Chrome, and popular games like “Plants vs. Zombies” are all missing from Amazon’s tablets.

For those who find Amazon’s options too restrictive, the Nook is a breath of fresh air. The tablet might not be powerful enough to run all of my favorite apps and games, but at least it offers the chance to try them.

Performance and battery life

The game “Plants vs. Zombies” on Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet
Plants vs. Zombies and other light games play well on Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet, but graphic-intensive games falter.

This Nook runs on a MediaTek Helio P22T Tab processor and has 2GB of memory, meaning it’s not particularly fast or powerful. That’s not surprising at this price point.

It succeeds at streaming movies, loading books, and turning pages, but don’t ask it to do much more. Even the smallest actions can cause stuttering. For example, there is sometimes a slight delay when opening apps like Chrome or surfacing the on-screen keyboard.

Games are tricky for the Nook. Older, less graphic-intensive games, such as “Plants vs. Zombies,” play without so much as a hiccup, but newer 3-D games stutter and crash. The Geekbench 5 benchmarking app that’s meant to evaluate the processor’s performance quit halfway through its assessment of the Nook multiple times.

But watching movies and TV on the Nook is seamless. The two speakers on the tablet punch way above their weight, providing sound that is loud enough to fill a small room at only a quarter volume. Plus, the Google Play Store has just about every streaming service you might want.

Barnes & Noble claims that the Nook gets up to 11 hours of battery life based on reading, watching videos, and web browsing. I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far. It generally lasts me three days on a charge after spending two hours per day reading and another two hours watching TV.

The cameras on the Nook perform less admirably than the battery. The tablet has a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The latter of which can – in theory – be used for face authentication, but usually fails to recognize me.

Should you buy it?

The Google Play Store on Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet
The fact that the Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet has full access to the Google Play store makes this tablet a compelling buy.

Barnes & Noble’s latest tablet built with Lenovo is a good choice for those seeking an affordable tablet designed mainly for reading and watching videos. Access to the Google Play store means that most reading and streaming apps work well on this tablet. But the Nook is slow and lacks a full 1080p screen.

What are your alternatives?

The Amazon Kindle app on Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet
The Amazon Fire HD 10 and the 10.2-inch iPad are alternatives to Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet

There is little incentive to opt for the Nook if you are thoroughly immersed in the Kindle ecosystem and never plan to read a book outside of it. The Amazon Fire HD 10 offers a much sharper screen and other benefits for only $20 more.

You could also opt for the $179.99 Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus – which is almost identical to the Fire HD 10 except for the addition of wireless charging and an extra gigabyte of RAM. Both tablets feature integration with Alexa – including the ability to control smart-home devices, set alarms, and ask for news or recipes. The major trade-off is that you lose access to the Google Play Store.

A pricier choice is the 10.2-inch iPad. It offers a jam-packed app store, Apple’s fast and powerful A12 Bionic processor, multitasking capabilities, and support for the Apple Pencil and other accessories. We even called it the best overall iPad. But priced at $329, the iPad is almost three times more expensive than the Nook.

The bottom line

Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet display
Barnes & Noble and Lenovo’s Nook Tablet offers lots of value for a low-cost tablet.

The $129.99 Nook 10-inch HD Tablet Designed with Lenovo is a great alternative to Amazon for those seeking an inexpensive tablet for reading books and watching videos. The processor is sluggish and the screen resolution is less than ideal. But the sturdy design and access to the Google Play store make this a perfect pickup for those who need more than Amazon will give them.

Pros: Good battery life, sturdy design, access to the Google Play store, loud speakers

Cons: Slow processor, lacks a full HD screen

Ubisoft

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla
Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla” was one of the first titles released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

French publisher Ubisoft is the creator of games like “Assassin’s Creed,” “Far Cry” and “Rainbow Six.” During their E3 address you can expect to see more of “Far Cry 6,” which features actor Giancarlo Esposito of “Breaking Bad” and “The Mandalorian,” as well as gameplay from “Rainbow Six Extraction,” an online multiplayer game that previously premiered as “Rainbow Six Quarantine” in 2019.

Ubisioft has confirmed that a previously announced remake of “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” will not be shown at E3. “Beyond Good and Evil 2,” another long-awaited Ubisoft title, hasn’t shared any news since September 2020 but that last update anticipated a trailer arriving in 2021.

Xbox and Bethesda

Phil Spencer Microsoft E3 2019
Xbox executive Phil Spencer addressing the crowd at E3 2019.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda has been one of the biggest stories in the gaming business this year, bringing a healthy library of iconic video game franchises like “Fallout” and “Elder Scrolls” into the Xbox family.

While Xbox launched it’s next-gen Series X and Series S consoles in November, the company has been slow to deliver exclusive games. At E3 we expect details on “Halo Infinite,” a flagship Xbox title that was originally intended to launch alongside the Xbox Series X|S but was delayed to fall 2021 to improve the finished product.

Bethesda has fewer announced games on its slate, but fans have been excited for new details on the space roleplaying game “Starfield” and the next “Elder Scrolls” game. Future Bethesda releases will reportedly be exclusive to Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.

Square Enix

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Square Enix released “Final Fantasy VII Remake” last year after more than seven years of development.

This Japanese developer publishes a wide range of blockbuster games, including “Final Fantasy,” “Tomb Raider,” and “Marvel’s Avengers.” The company has promised news on upcoming action game “Babylon’s Fall,” narrative adventure “Life is Strange: True Colors,” and the next big update for “Avengers.”

Square Enix’s Eidos-Montreal will also show a world premiere trailer for their latest game; the same studio previously worked on “Tomb Raider,” “Avengers” and “Deus Ex.”

Take-Two Interactive

Grand Theft Auto V
“Grand Theft Auto V” is one of the bestselling games ever, and it’s coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Take-Two is best known as the publisher of “NBA 2K” and the parent company of “Grand Theft Auto” maker Rockstar Games. Rockstar is currently planning to re-release “Grand Theft Auto V” for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Take-Two recently signed Tiger Woods to an exclusive deal for future games, so we may see some of PGA Tour 2K22 at E3.

Ultimately, Take-Two’s conference could feature a range of surprises from partner studios; early leaks indicate the publisher could announce a Marvel-themed crossover with its “XCOM” strategy games.

Capcom

Resident Evil Village Capcom
Capcom’s “Resident Evil Village” is one of our favorite games of 2021 so far.

Capcom plans to talk about updates coming to some of the big games it released earlier this year, like “Resident Evil Village” and “Monster Hunter Rise.” There will also be news on at least two upcoming titles, “Monster Hunter Stories 2” and “The Great Ace Attorney.”

Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
Nintendo fans hope to learn more about the latest “Legend of Zelda” game at E3 2021.

It’s not clear what exactly Nintendo has planned for this year’s E3 presentation, but there has been wide speculation that the company could be working on a new version of the Switch with 4K resolution and an OLED screen.

Fans are eagerly awaiting new details on “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2,” but Nintendo is planning to release a remake “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” in July. The company recently announced a new Pokémon game called “Pokémon Legends: Arceus,” so we could see more of that, or the upcoming remakes of “Pokémon Diamond” and “Pearl,” too.

Bandai-Namco

Scarlet Nexus Bandai Namco video game

Bandai-Namco has two anime-inspired games set to arrive in the coming months, “Scarlet Nexus” and “Tales of Arise.” Expect to see footage of those two alongside more footage of “Elden Ring,” a new game from “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and the creators of “Dark Souls.”

  • Sony is publishing dozens of exclusive games to maintain the popularity of the PlayStation 5.
  • While future games will be designed to make the most of the PS5, many will work on PS4 too.
  • We’ve compiled a list of new and upcoming PS5 games, excluding ones you can also play on PC or Xbox.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is the fastest-selling video game console on the market, enticing millions of gamers to upgrade their machines for the next-generation of blockbuster releases. PlayStation’s large library of exclusive games play a major role in the brand’s lasting popularity, with hits like “The Last of Us,” “God of War,” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man” breaking sales records and earning game of the year honors.

Sony says it’s working on at least 25 upcoming PS5 exclusives, many of which will also work on PS4. That’s good news, since the high demand for the PS5 is expected to outmatch supply for most of 2021. Players who grab games like “Horizon Forbidden West” on PS4 will be able to play an even better version for free whenever they upgrade to PS5.

Just a handful of PS5 games, like “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” and “Demon’s Souls,” are unavailable on the PS4 due to their technical demands.

Below we’ve compiled a list of upcoming games you need a PlayStation console to play, excluding games that are also available on PC or Xbox consoles.

‘Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’ – available now

Ratchet Clank Rift Apart
“Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” is the latest entry in the popular franchise.

“Ratchet and Clank” has been a PlayStation exclusive series since 2002, and “Rift Apart” is the first new entry since 2016, when the series was rebooted and adapted into a movie.

Ratchet and his robotic sidekick Clank have invented a wide range of weapons and gadgets to battle the evil Dr. Nefarious and his cronies. In “Rift Apart” Ratchet travels through space and time to stop Nefarious from tearing the universe apart, using a mix of platforming and run-and-gun skills to progress through each new world.

As a true PlayStation 5 exclusive, “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart” makes use of the PS5’s speedy loading times to let Ratchet quickly slide between worlds, and will incorporate ray tracing for enhanced reflections and lighting. The game also adds a new playable character to the series named Rivet, who hails from another dimension.

‘Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade’ – available now

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
“Final Fantasy VII” has been remade for the PS4 and PS5 with upgraded graphics and gameplay.

The original “Final Fantasy VII” was one of the first major exclusives released on the PS1, and more than 20 years later “Final Fantasy VII Remake” has returned to PS4 and PS5 as an exclusive reimagining of the classic game.

“Final Fantasy VII Remake” has been design from the ground up with a new combat system and some of the most impressive graphics we’ve seen to date. However, “Remake” only contains about one third of the original “Final Fantasy VII” story, so sequels are on the way.

Released on June 10, “Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade” is the first story add-on for the game and it’s exclusive to PlayStation 5.  That same day, “Final Fantasy VII Remake” also received an update to improve performance on PS5 and add a camera mode to all versions of the game.

‘Horizon Forbidden West’ – late 2021

Horizon Forbidden West
The sequel to “Horizon Zero Dawn” is in the works for PS5.

Horizon Zero Dawn” marked the debut of a new PlayStation franchise on PS4, pushing the boundaries of the console with its impressive visuals. Its sequel, “Horizon Forbidden West,” continues the open world adventure series on a new continent, with players once again assuming control over the huntress Aloy in a post-apocalyptic version of the western United States, including regions of San Francisco, Utah, and the Yosemite Valley.

The creators of “Horizon Forbidden West,” Guerilla Games, say the haptic feedback of the PS5 controller will let players feel the resistance of Aloy’s bow while aiming, and it will have special interactions when fighting against machines and humans.

Sony has confirmed that “Horizon Forbidden West” will be available on PlayStation 4, as well as PS5.

‘God of War’ (title unconfirmed) – 2022 or later

God of War Ragnarok
A new “God of War” title is being developed for the PlayStation 5 but few details are known.

The 2018 reboot of “God of War” was one of the PlayStation 4’s most critically acclaimed titles, earning multiple “Game of the Year” awards with its polished gameplay and story presentation. Sony teased the game’s sequel during a PlayStation 5 event in September 2020 with a logo and the word “Ragnarok.”

Sony’s Santa Monica Studios said it’s aiming for a 2022 release for the “God of War” sequel, but hopefully we see a trailer before the end of the year.

‘Gran Turismo 7’ – TBA

Gran Turismo 7
“Gran Turismo 7” will take advantage of the PS5’s powerful hardware.

“Gran Turismo” is Sony’s seminal racing franchise, with each new entry in the series pushing the limits of the PlayStation hardware. Sony has confirmed that “Gran Turismo 7” will incorporate ray-tracing visual effects, 3D audio, and haptic feedback using the PS5’s Dual Sense controller.

A release window for “Gran Turismo 7” hasn’t been announced yet.

‘Returnal’ – available now

Returnal PlayStation 5 PS5
“Returnal” is only available to play on the PS5.

Returnal” is one of the few PlayStation games that actually requires a PlayStation 5 to play, thanks to its fast moving gameplay and mutating environments. Players control an astronaut stranded on an alien planet who realizes that each time she dies, she is reborn at the start of her journey.

The goal of “Returnal” is to fight your way across this alien world and free yourself from the planet’s cycle of life and death, but each death will reset your progress. That makes “Returnal” quite difficult to complete, but it’s an absolute treat if you enjoy challenging games.

Returnal” also offers one of the most impressive demonstrations of the PS5 hardware so far, making expert use of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback alongside the console’s next-gen processing power.

‘Destruction AllStars’ – available now

Destruction Allstars
“Destruction AllStars” carries on the PlayStation brand’s long history with vehicle combat games.

‘Demon’s Souls’ – available now

Demons Souls PS5
You can only play FromSoftware’s remake of “Demon’s Souls” on the PlayStation 5.

FromSoftware’s “Dark Souls” games have earned a legendary reputation among hardcore gamers for their difficulty, but the series’ origin actually dates back to a small PlayStation 3 exclusive called “Demon’s Souls” released in 2009.

Despite its heavy influence on recent action games, “Demon’s Souls” was never been released outside of the PS3, while “Dark Souls I” and “Dark Souls II” enjoyed remasters on newer consoles.

The dungeon crawling gameplay and haunting visuals of “Demon’s Souls” were remastered for the PlayStation 5, with developer Bluepoint Games rebuilding all of FromSoftware’s original game from the ground up with new character designs and stunning environments in 4K resolution.

‘Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales’ – available now

Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5
The Ultimate edition of “Miles Morales” also comes with the PS5 remaster of “Marvel’s Spider-Man.”

“Marvel’s Spider-Man” was one of Sony’s biggest PlayStation 4 exclusives, making the game’s sequel an excellent way to demonstrate the difference in power between the PS4 and the PlayStation 5.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales” once again takes place in New York City, one year after the events of the first game. Marvel fans will recognize Miles from the 2018 film “Into the Spider-Verse” and years’ worth of comic book appearances. His unique spider powers — an invisibility cloak and electric venom blasts — look even more impressive with the PS5’s ray tracing features.

While “Miles Morales” is playable on PS4, the vast improvements in visuals and loading times make it one of most impressive games designed for PS5. If you haven’t played the original “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” you can also get the remastered version for PS5 when you buy the $70 Ultimate Edition of “Miles Morales.”

Sackboy A Big Adventure
The mascot from Sony’s “LittleBigPlanet” series stars in his own game called “Sackboy: A Big Adventure.”

Sackboy, the mascot of Sony’s “LittleBigPlanet” series, got his very own game when the PS5 launched. Unlike “LittleBigPlanet,” which primarily focused on creating your own 2D platforming stages, “Sackboy: A Big Adventure” offers a full 3D range of motion and a set of premade levels for up to four players.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure” is available for PlayStation 4 too, though the PS5 enjoys faster load times and enhanced graphics. The difference between PS4 and PS5 isn’t quite as noticeable as it is for games like “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” though.
