Best streaming service 4x3
The best streaming services include on-demand, live TV, and channel-specific apps.

  • Streaming services provide an alternative to cable TV, offering movies and shows online for a fee.
  • There are three main streaming service categories: on-demand, live TV, and channel-specific.
  • Which streaming service is best for your needs will largely depend on your budget and taste in shows.

Viewers now have more places to watch their favorite movie and shows than ever. Choosing the right streaming service for your home entertainment setup will depend on a number of factors, including your budget, which exclusive programs you like the most, how many screens you want to watch on, and more.

Netflix and Hulu have grown from startups to industry juggernauts, while major studios have entered the market with services like Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount Plus.

To help you decide what to sign up for, we rounded up the best streaming services of 2021. Our picks primarily focus on on-demand platforms like Netflix and Hulu, but we also included separate sections for live TV and specialty streaming channels.

Here are the best streaming services:

watching netflix

With its exclusive shows and incredible 4K quality, Netflix continues to set the streaming standard for the competition.

Pros: Fantastic library of originals, industry-leading video quality, impressive app support, special interface for kids, no commercials

Cons: Slightly more expensive than the competition, movie selection pales in comparison to newer services

Netflix has spent the last few years producing a growing collection of original programming, including exclusive movies, ongoing TV series, documentaries, and comedy specials. Netflix Originals keep subscribers invested when their favorite classic show or movie leaves the platform for another service.

The success of Netflix exclusives, like “Bridgerton,” “Stranger Things,” “The Witcher,” and “Tiger King,” has helped the service justify its slightly higher price, and encouraged streaming competitors to prioritize creating their own original titles to generate more value.

Netflix also has a large library of children’s series and a separate interface designed to let kids choose their own shows without running into adult programming, making it a good choice for families in need of all-ages entertainment.

When it comes to app support, Netflix is available on virtually any streaming device you can think of, including computers, smartphones, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, smart TVs, and more. It also offers support for all of the latest video and audio formats, including 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos — though it does charge extra for those features.

Hulu app on android mobile screen

Thanks to a mix of content and various plans, Hulu remains one of the most affordable streaming options with unmatched choice.

Pros: On-demand library with live TV option, can subscribe to “channels” like HBO, discounted bundle with Disney Plus and ESPN+

Cons: Harder to share due to two-device limit on Basic plan, Basic plan includes commercials

Hulu offers two main packages that provide on-demand streaming, including a Basic option with commercials and a Premium plan without commercials. The service also offers upgrade packages that add live TV channels.

Hulu arguably boasts the most impressive TV show library of any on-demand streaming service, with a wider range of new and classic shows than Netflix or Amazon. This includes next-day streaming access to select broadcast series on networks like ABC, FX, and Fox. Hulu also offers a solid selection of original shows, like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but its slate of exclusives isn’t quite as notable as some of its competitors.

Though Hulu does offer 4K and HDR streaming on select devices, its 4K lineup is limited compared to Netflix, Amazon, and Disney Plus.

Hulu allows only two devices to stream at the same time, but you can remove that limit with Hulu + Live TV subscription and the $10 add-on for unlimited screens. Hulu also lets subscribers add other channels like HBO, Showtime, and Starz for an extra monthly price.

You can even bundle Hulu with Disney Plus and ESPN+ for a 30% discount on the monthly price of all three. Subscribers should be aware, however, that Hulu will be raising the price of its Basic and Premium plans by $1 starting October 8.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is a capable, competitive streaming service that’s more than just a Prime membership perk.

Pros: Included with Amazon Prime, offers extra movie rental and purchase options, lots of international titles, can add streaming channels, 4K HDR support is included in base plan

Cons: The Prime Video library is less impressive than the competition

More than 110 million Amazon Prime members help make Prime Video the second largest on-demand service in terms of subscribers, even if they’re not all streaming video on a regular basis.

Prime Video features a mix of movies and shows that are provided for free with membership, including original titles like “The Boys” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” You can also rent or buy just about any film that’s available on home video for your personal collection and watch with the Prime Video app whenever you like. This is a feature that most subscription streaming apps don’t offer.

Prime Video has launched several award-winning original shows since 2013 and has successfully imported dozens of series from the BBC, as well as Hindi language films from India. The platform offers up to 4K streaming with support for HDR10+ playback on select titles. And, unlike Netflix, it doesn’t charge extra to get the best video and audio quality.

Though Prime Video is included with a Prime Membership, you can subscribe to the service on its own for $9 a month if you prefer. You can also sign up for add-on channels to other services, like Showtime, AMC Plus, and even Paramount Plus.

Disney Plus

GettyImages 1225877439

Disney Plus is the top streaming choice for families and fans of blockbuster franchises like Marvel and ‘Star Wars.’

Pros: Disney’s vault of classic movies and shows, 4K HDR, blockbuster Marvel and “Star Wars” titles

Cons: Lack of mature content limits the platform’s potential, library of original shows is still small compared to the competition

Disney Plus is the fastest growing streaming service on the market, having amassed more than 100 million subscribers since its launch in November 2019. The platform is the sole subscription streaming home of Disney’s classic animated films, as well as franchises like “Star Wars” and “The Simpsons.”

With that in mind, the main draw of the service is its wide catalog of existing Disney, “Star Wars,” Marvel, and Pixar movies and shows. There are some original films and series as well, but the lineup remains small compared to Netflix and Amazon.

It’s also important to note that Disney Plus is designed to be family-oriented, so even Disney’s hit exclusive shows, like “The Mandalorian” and “Loki,” are rated for teen viewers. Movies are also limited to PG-13 so you won’t find any R-rated content here.

That said, at $8 a month with no commercials, Disney Plus might offer the best combination of titles, streaming quality, and value. With an endless supply of family-friendly entertainment, Disney Plus is a popular choice for parents, but adults who didn’t grow up on Disney or “Star Wars” may want to find a second streaming service to fill their palette with more mature shows.

On that note, you can bundle Disney Plus with Hulu and ESPN+ for $14 a month. The bundle saves you about $7 a month compared to signing up for each service separately.

HBO Max app logo

HBO Max is a premium service for fans of prestige television, iconic films, and the latest movie releases.

Pros: Prestige shows and films, day-and-date streaming for Warner Bros. theatrical releases, collections from Adult Swim, TCM, Sesame Street, and more

Cons: More expensive than most competitors, only a few 4K titles so far

HBO Max combines critically acclaimed shows and movies from HBO’s cable network with new originals, additional WarnerMedia films, classic shows like “Friends,” and collections from channels like Adult Swim, TCM, DC Universe, and the anime streaming service Crunchyroll.

Like the cable channel, HBO Max prides itself on having some of the best movies recently released on home video. HBO exclusive shows, like “Lovecraft Country,” “Succession” and “Watchmen,” continue to define prestige television and HBO Max is the best way to catch up on past hits like “The Wire” and “Game of Thrones.”

New episodes of “Sesame Street” are the highlight of HBO Max’s family offerings; there’s not a ton of educational content for young children, but there’s enough to satisfy kids for a few hours on an indoor afternoon.

Perhaps best of all, HBO Max is home to brand-new Warner Bros. movies the same day they premiere in theaters. “Wonder Woman 1984” was the first titled released like this, and the upcoming lineup includes “The Matrix 4,” “Dune,” and more.

For now, the biggest drawbacks of HBO Max are technology related. Outside of the new Warner releases, HBO Max doesn’t offer much support for 4K or HDR yet, limiting the quality of some movies and shows. For example, “Game of Thrones” is available in 4K on Blu-ray, but HBO Max streams are limited to 1080p.

Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus streaming

Paramount Plus is a fantastic destination for classic cable TV shows, with potential for even more value in the future.

Pros: Huge library of classic TV shows, live CBS with Premium plan, new Paramount films 45 days after theater release

Cons: Less exclusive content than the competition

Paramount Plus is a new on-demand streaming service from ViacomCBS, replacing CBS All Access. The platform gives viewers access to the live CBS TV channel (Premium Plan only), along with a large collection of TV shows and movies.

In addition to CBS series, Paramount Plus draws programming from Viacom cable channels like MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. Paramount Plus is also home to exclusive content like a reboot of “iCarly” and several “Star Trek” shows.

The streaming service hosts newly released Paramount movies as soon as 45 days after they hit theaters. “A Quiet Place Part II” was the first film to get an early release on the service. “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run” was a launch title for Paramount Plus, and “Mission Impossible 7” is due out next year.

Sports fans can also tune into local NFL games broadcast on CBS, as well as UEFA matches and March Madness matchups when each season is in session.

peacock browse

With free and premium streaming options, Peacock is a convenient source for hit TV shows and movie nostalgia.

Pros: Free to watch many shows and movies, live news and sporting events

Cons: Premium plan doesn’t offer many exclusives, movie library lacks newer releases, no 4K or HDR support

Peacock is the free-to-watch streaming home for NBCUniversal shows like “30 Rock,” “Cheers,” and “The Office,” as well as some new original titles. The service also offers a rotating slate of hit movies. Though few of the choices are less than 10-years old, Peacock has dozens of memorable films.

Peacock’s base plan is free but it offers a limited library and it’s ad-supported. If you want access to all of the platform’s content you can pay $5 a month, but this plan still features commercials. To unlock everything with ad-free access, you need to pay $10 a month for the Peacock Premium Plus plan.

Starting in 2022, the service will stream brand-new Universal movies within four months of their theatrical releases. Select movies also debut on Peacock at the same time they premiere in theaters, like “The Boss Baby: Family Business” and “Halloween Kills.”

Peacock has some live news and sports broadcasts as well. In April, the service became the exclusive streaming home of WWE Network, and it streamed highlights from the 2021 Olympics.

Peacock doesn’t stream in 4K resolution, though given the platform’s emphasis on television and older films, the 1080p limit isn’t a huge drawback.

Apple TV Plus

Apple TV Plus on iPhone and Macbook
It’s possible to cancel your Apple TV Plus subscription using different Apple devices.

Apple TV Plus has a limited lineup, but its cheap price makes it a solid option for fans of its exclusive shows.

Pros: Affordable price, exclusive shows, movie rental and purchase options, can add streaming channels, 4K HDR support

Cons: The lineup of movies and shows is small compared to other services

Apple TV Plus is one of the most affordable streaming services you can subscribe to. The platform costs just $5 a month for ad-free access to its entire lineup of on-demand movies and shows.

While that’s an attractive price, the Apple TV Plus library is relatively small compared to competing platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu. Most notably, the service lacks a large back catalog of movies and shows from other networks and studios. That said, there are some standout exclusive series like “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and the docuseries “The Me You Can’t See.”

Like Prime Video, Apple TV Plus also lets you access a huge library of additional movies and shows that you can pay to rent or purchase. Though it would be great to have more programs included as part of your subscription, being able to order more titles within the Apple TV Plus app is convenient. You can also add extra channels to your subscription, like Showtime, for an extra fee.

If you’re someone who plans to use other Apple services, you should also consider the Apple One bundle. The base package includes Apple TV Plus, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud storage for $15 a month.

The best live TV streaming services

Live TV streaming services are marketed as a cheaper alternative to cable or satellite, offering tighter channel packages for potential “cord cutters.” However, prices have gone up in this space, reducing the cost benefit that streaming has over traditional TV.

That said, in many cases you can still save with certain services, but choosing the right package is essential for getting the most out of these platforms, so you’ll want to figure out which TV stations are your must-haves before you choose a provider.

If you plan to use a live TV streaming service to replace cable on multiple TVs in your home, be prepared to pay a bit extra so you can stream simultaneously on separate devices. Also, keep in mind that these TV services have the same commercials and general experience as cable even though they’re broadcast online.

Streaming quality can vary from channel to channel, but they all typically maintain 720p or 1080p resolution. Again, you’ll want to check the specific channel packages and other perks offered by each service to figure out which is best for you.

Here’s a rundown of the leading live TV services available now:

Sling TVSling TV offers two different packages, Sling Blue and Sling Orange, for $35 a month each, or for $50 a month bundled together.

Sling Blue offers streaming on up to three devices and more channels, including MSNBC, Fox News, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, and the NFL Network. Sling Orange offers Disney channel and the ESPN family of channels, but only allows one streaming device at a time. You can find a full breakdown of Sling channels here.

Getting the bundle makes the most sense, since you’ll get the full set of channels and features for $15 extra. It’s worth noting that Sling viewers can’t access their local ABC or CBS affiliates, so if you want those channels, you should look to another service or an antenna.

Product Card (small)

Hulu + Live TVHulu’s Live TV plan costs $65 a month for access to around 75 channels. You need to pay for an upgrade to stream on more than two devices at the same time, however, and it also costs extra if you want more than 50 hours of Cloud DVR storage. On the plus side, Hulu + Live TV includes Hulu’s on-demand service, so you get a bit more value there.

The base bundle includes all the major local networks in most markets, the ESPN family of channels, Fox and NBC Sports channels, and SEC Network. However, the service lacks access to the NFL Network, NBA TV, and the MLB Network, all of which are standard for YouTube TV.

Product Card (small)

Fubo TVFuboTV starts at $65 a month for over 100 channels, 250 hours of cloud DVR space, and streaming on up to three devices. Unlike most of its competitors, Fubo charges extra for sports channels like the SEC Network, NBA TV, and the MLB Network. Local channels are included at no additional cost.

Product Card (small)

YouTube TVYouTube TV costs $65 a month for more than 85 channels with unlimited cloud DVR storage and streaming on up to three devices at once. YouTubeTV includes more sports channels in its base package than its competitors, including ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, the NFL Network, NBA TV, and the MLB Network.

YouTubeTV is also the only live TV streaming service currently offering PBS alongside local affiliate networks from CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC.

Product Card (small)

DirecTV Stream (formerly AT&T TV)Starting at $70 a month for a no-contract plan, DirecTV TV provides more pricing and package options than most live TV streaming competitors — the service offers nearly every channel, but like standard cable, it can be hard to get all the channels you want in a cheap bundle.

Because DirecTV Stream comes from AT&T, which is HBO Max’s parent company, most of the packages also include an HBO Max subscription, which would cost $15 a month separately.

Product Card (small)

Philo TV Philo TV is the most affordable option at $25 a month for 60+ channels. Unfortunately, Philo viewers don’t have access to their local affiliate networks, and the service doesn’t offer many upgrade options for watching sports or cable news. It does offer popular channels like Comedy Central, MTV, and AMC, though, so there’s still plenty to watch.

The best streaming channels

Best ESPN+ Exclusive Programming 4x3

Some streaming services act as an online portal for access to a specific channel. If you want to watch Showtime, for instance, but don’t want to subscribe through a cable provider, you can simply sign up for the network’s standalone streaming option. Some of these channel-specific platforms also include exclusive content you can’t find anywhere else.

In many cases, these types of streaming channels can also be added to existing platforms, like Hulu and Prime Video, while others are exclusive to certain devices and services. Be sure to check if the channel you want is available on your device before signing up.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the best streaming channel services you can subscribe to now:

Showtime – Showtime offers a lineup of critically acclaimed original shows and blockbuster movies from the premium cable channel. Some of Showtime’s most popular hits are “Billions,” “Shameless,” and “Homeland.” You can stream Showtime directly from the official website or app for $11 a month, or sign up through Prime Video or Hulu.

Product Card (small)

Starz – Like Showtime and HBO, Starz offers on-demand streaming of its original shows and a rotating catalog of movies. Notably, Starz is the exclusive premium network home for Sony films like “Spider-Man” and “Jumanji.” The service costs $9 a month, though new subscribers can get their first three months for $3 a month.

Product Card (small)

ESPN+ – ESPN’s service is another example of a channel-specific streaming platform, offering live broadcasts of sporting events that aren’t normally aired on cable and exclusive access to niche coverage of sports like UFC and “League of Legends.” With that said, ESPN+ does not actually provide live streaming access to the regular ESPN cable channel. The service costs $7 a month, and you can bundle it with Disney Plus and Hulu for $14 a month.

What we look for in on-demand streaming services

Watching TV streaming app smartphone Roku HBO Go

On-demand subscription services, like Netflix, popularized streaming by providing a larger library of on-demand movies and shows than cable providers could offer, and at a cheaper price. Subscribers gain instant access to thousands of titles rather than paying more for dozens of channels or rental fees for new releases. Many streaming services have also launched their own exclusive programming that you can’t see anywhere else.

Since the goal is entertainment, choosing the best on-demand streaming service for your needs will largely come down to your personal tastes. However, we can judge the different on-demand platforms based on a few common factors, like their library size, selection of critically acclaimed exclusives, video quality, app functionality, and price.

The best on-demand streaming services have set a standard for 4K video quality, with support for HDR color and contrast on compatible TVs. TV channels rarely broadcast in 4K, so we have lower expectations for live TV streaming services, which still use HD resolutions like 1080p or 720p.

Quality can still vary based on the movie or show being streamed, and you’ll need a strong, stable internet connection to stream consistently at 4K. Even if you don’t have a 4K TV, these services will still deliver the best possible quality for your setup.

We expect app support on iOS, Android, and most home entertainment devices, though the growing number of streaming services has led to slower releases on competitive platforms, like Amazon and Roku. The best on-demand services also give subscribers an option to save select movies for offline viewing while they travel, though an online check-in is still required occasionally.

When comparing catalogs, we try to consider the range of entertainment offered by each streaming service, how much the platform has invested in exclusive programming, and which age ranges are best suited to watch. While most streaming services will have a rotating list of movies, it’s important to pay attention to which series and franchises will remain platform exclusive, like “The Office,” “Star Wars,” and “Stranger Things.”

How much does ESPN+ cost 4x3
ESPN+ offers streaming access to live sports and on-demand sports content.

  • ESPN+ costs $7 a month or $70 annually for streaming access to exclusive sports events and programs.
  • The service previously cost $6 a month or $60 a year, but rates were increased on August 13.
  • You can also bundle ESPN+ with Hulu and Disney Plus for $14 a month.

Monthly Subscription Service (small)Bundle Monthly Subscription (small)

In 2018, cable sports channel ESPN launched ESPN+, a subscription-based streaming service for sports.

It’s a hybrid service that combines on-demand and live sports video content with an ever-expanding catalog of original shows, documentaries, and news from ESPN Insider, the network’s paid news content.

Here’s a quick rundown of how much the service costs and how much you can save if you choose a bundle package.

How much is ESPN+?

If you just want access to ESPN+, it’ll cost you $7 a month or $70 per year. If you do the math, signing up for a whole year instead of going month-to-month will save you about $14.

When it first launched, ESPN+ cost $5 a month or $50 a year. The rates were increased to $6/month in August 2020, and then increased again to $7/month in August 2021. Current subscribers will see the new pricing reflected on their first bill on or after August 13.

An ESPN+ subscription gets you access to all the video content and ESPN articles in the network’s database, including live and on-demand games that aren’t available to you locally, and even the beloved “30 for 30” sports documentaries.

You also gain the option to watch exclusive UFC fights for an additional fee. Existing members can purchase UFC PPV events for $70. Alternatively, you can sign up for an annual ESPN+ subscription with one UFC PPV event included for a total price of $89.98.

Bundling ESPN+ with Hulu and Disney Plus

If you’re interested in Hulu or Disney Plus, it might be a good idea to take advantage of a bundle for $14 a month.

The bundle includes ESPN+, the regular version of Hulu with ads, which costs $6 a month, and Disney Plus, which costs $8 a month. The $14 monthly bundle is a good value as it saves you $7 each month. You can also upgrade to other versions of Hulu for an additional fee.

If you’re a current subscriber to one of the services, you can upgrade to the discounted bundle here without having to cancel your existing subscription.

Watching ads on Hulu isn’t the worst thing to happen, though, especially since there are so many good shows to catch, and Disney Plus is arguably one of the best streaming services.

Netflix’s new ‘Play Something’ feature will remove the stress of picking something to watch by choosing a show or movie for you

Netflix Play Something
  • Netflix is adding a new shuffle-play button called “Play Something.”
  • Play Something will pick a series or movie on your behalf based on your interests.
  • The feature is rolling out on TVs globally on Wednesday and is coming to Android devices soon.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

After a year of staying at home, trying to decide on something to stream can be a daunting task. Thanks to a new Netflix feature, that agony may be coming to an end.

Netflix on Wednesday launched a new feature called “Play Something.” The new tool, which acts like a shuffle button, will choose a series or movie on your behalf based on other things you’ve watched in the past. If you don’t like what it serves up, you can hit “Play Something Else” and it will supply either a new movie or show, or one you’re already watching, didn’t finish, or have already added to your list.

Play Something will show up multiple times in the app, including underneath your profile name, on your Netflix homepage, and in the navigation menu on the left side.

The feature is rolling out on TVs worldwide on Wednesday and will be coming to Android devices soon, Netflix says.

Read more: Netflix has kept churn low despite price hikes and intensifying competition, and it could be a key to success during a tough 2021

Netflix has been testing a shuffle-play feature since last summer and announced during its fourth-quarter earnings report in January that the feature would be rolling out in the first half of 2021. Greg Peters, Netflix’s COO and chief product officer, said at the time that the feature was “really working for us” and that the company had found that sometimes, users just want to “skip browsing entirely” and have Netflix choose a title for them.

Reed Hastings, co-CEO of Netflix, jokingly asked at the time whether Netflix was going to name the feature “I’m feeling lucky,” a reference to an early Google feature that let you head directly to the top search result for your query rather than browsing through pages of websites.

Netflix has also tested other similar features, including the option on Android to play a random episode of a TV show like “The Office” or “Arrested Development.” Hulu has done the same, adding a shuffle button for “Seinfeld” in 2019.

Hulu Basic vs Hulu Premium 4x3

Streaming Service (small)

As streaming services surge in interest following a year spent mostly indoors, cable subscriptions and cinema outings are fading away in favor of at-home binge-watching sessions and indoor movie nights. In fact, a survey of American households suggests the average home now has four streaming subscriptions.

Many people are looking for the best value to help build their repertoire of digital platforms. Hulu Basic is one of the cheapest options at just $6 a month ($60 a year). The plan gets you access to an extensive library of shows, movies, and Hulu Originals.

What is Hulu Basic?

Hulu Basic is the company’s simplest and most affordable streaming option. For $6 a month you get access to Hulu’s entire catalog, but you will have to watch some ads as you stream. New subscribers can receive a free 30-day trial when they sign up.

Hulu plays host to a wide variety of content, including comedies like “Letterkenny,” cartoons like “Animaniacs,” dramas like “Fargo,” gems from the ’90s like “Seinfeld,” Hulu originals like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and even Oscar-winning films like “Nomadland.”

You can also use Hulu to keep up with select network shows as they air – or the day after they air – like “Saturday Night Live,” “The Bachelor,” and many more. This is a huge advantage over Netflix where you have to wait up to a year or more for an entire season to show up.

What’s the difference between Hulu Basic and Hulu Premium?

Hulu Basic costs just $6 a month, while Hulu premium is $12 a month. Both offer access to Hulu’s entire on-demand catalog, but Basic has ads while Premium is ad-free.

Students can get Hulu Basic for $2 a month with a verified college enrollment – a savings of $48 a year compared to the regular price.

In exchange for a cheaper monthly rate, Hulu Basic serves you unskippable ads before and during your stream. Hulu will typically air five minutes of ads for 30-minute programs and 10 minutes of ads for hour-long programs. It’s a small price to pay for halving the cost of your subscription, and it’s still less overall ad time than you’d find on cable.

You can also sign up for Hulu Basic as part of a bundle with Disney Plus and ESPN+. This bundle costs $14 a month, which is about $6 cheaper than the price of paying for all three services separately. The plan is $20 a month for Disney Plus, ESPN+, and Hulu Premium.

How can I stream Hulu?

Most smart TVs have Hulu already built in, so all you’ll have to do is launch the app and sign in to start watching. You can explore our guide for the best affordable smart TVs if you want a new display on a budget.

Aside from streaming on your laptop or phone, you can also use a streaming stick or box. These devices connect to your TV, offering access to apps like Hulu. We recommend the Roku Ultra as our top streaming option, but there are tons of other devices across price ranges.

Woman listening music app
A woman uses her mobile phone to open and play a song from her smartphone app.

  • Podcasts are a convenient way to catch up on news, sports, and special interests at home or on the go.
  • There are many apps with tons of podcasts you can listen to for free or with a paid subscription.
  • We recommend services like Audible, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and more.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

If you’re hooked on a popular podcast or are thinking about starting a new one, you aren’t alone. More Americans are listening to at least one podcast every month, a trend that only increased in 2020, according to a survey from Edison One and Triton Digital.

Whether you’re on your daily run, commuting to work, or simply relaxing at home, a great podcast can take you on an audio journey through politics, entertainment, comedy, literature, and more. Podcasts cover all genres, so whether you’re seeking a news update or want to get into true crime, there’s likely something out there for you.

There are many services that offer access to a wide range of podcasts, including several free apps and a few subscription platforms that even include exclusive programming. To help you get started, we’ve selected a few of the best apps you can use to listen to podcasts right now on a variety of devices.

Here are the best podcast apps:

Apple Podcasts

Apple Podcasts offers free access to over 30 million podcast episodes, along with helpful Siri voice search capabilities.

Although the app is exclusive to iOS devices, Apple Podcasts is one of the best — and most comprehensive — free podcast services available. The app includes over 30 million episodes and you can easily download your favorite podcasts for offline listening.

One of Apple Podcasts unique features is its ability to sync with Siri. This means you can talk to Siri and ask for podcast suggestions. The app also makes it easy to navigate podcasts based on different genres and Apple-curated collections. This makes it simple to find shows for a specific interest or see recommendations for “new and noteworthy” titles.

The search page also allows you to find podcasts by topic or by people mentioned within episodes via a show’s transcript. It’s important to note, however, that not every podcast has a transcript available.

Playback is easy to control with the option to rewind episodes by 15 seconds or fast-forward by 30 seconds. You can also play Apple Podcasts via Bluetooth from the app, adjust the audio’s speed, and set a sleep timer for when you want to pause.

Once you subscribe to a Podcast, the app notifies you when a new episode is out. There’s also plenty of ways you can preview podcasts before you listen to an episode thanks to introductions and trailers. There are also reviews and ratings from fellow Apple Podcasts listeners. If you end up liking a podcast, you can find recommendations at the bottom of a title’s page for similar content from the same creator.

On April 20, Apple announced that Apple Podcasts will update its look, add curated channels, and include a premium subscription option for certain shows beginning in May. Creators can add various benefits to their premium podcast subscriptions, including ad-free listening and early access.

Google Podcasts

Google Podcasts is a free service with convenient features that make it easy for users to discover more about the podcasts they listen to.

Google Podcasts helps you find the best shows for you tastes with a homepage that directs you to popular podcasts based on genres and what’s trending.

The app hosts many of the same shows as Apple Podcasts and its user interface is inviting to newcomers and listening veterans alike. If a show isn’t on Google Podcasts you can add it by entering its RSS feed into the platform.

Like other podcast apps, you can subscribe to shows and download them for offline listening. If you want to listen to a number of different podcasts in a certain order, you can start a queue.

One of the unique features found on Google Podcasts is the “explore topics” section on an episode’s page. This section links to Google search results for keywords based on the podcast you’re listening to. This means if you put on Football Weekly, a podcast by The Guardian, you can easily click on suggestions to find the latest news about soccer in the UK.

If you listened to a podcast and forgot to save it, you can go to the “Activity” tab. The tab keeps track of your queue, your downloaded episodes, your listening history, and your subscriptions.

Google Podcasts features a 30-second fast-forward option along with a 10-second rewind button, a sleep timer, and an option to “trim silence” on a show. You can also change the speed of an episode and share it with friends. Much like Apple Podcasts, transcripts are only available if they’re placed in an episode’s description.

Spotify features an array of curated, genre-specific collections of podcasts, including exclusive shows.

Spotify is unique compared to Google and Apple in its ability to provide millions of songs in addition to its podcasts. While Spotify does offer a free option, you need a paid subscription to get ad-free streaming.

Spotify has a number of plans for ad-free listening, starting with Spotify Premium for $10 a month for one account. It’s important to note that you can only download podcasts with Spotify if you have Premium.

The app’s podcast homepage features curated collections and genres, including spotlights on some of its original podcasts you won’t find anywhere else. Some Spotify exclusive shows include “Renegades: Born in the USA,” “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” and “Living & Learning with Reba McEntire.”

Once you find a podcast you like, you can choose to “follow” it from the Spotify app. That way you’ll be able to get notifications about when your favorite show has an update. If you want to explore new shows based on your favorite podcasts, each show has different categories like “Entertainment” or “Music.”

Much like Google, you can add episodes to your queue and listen to a number of different episodes in order. You can also make a playlist of new podcasts that you want to check out.

Once you start playing a podcast, you can change its speed, rewind or fast-forward by 15 seconds, and set a sleep timer. Like other podcast apps, transcripts are only available if they’re placed in an episode’s description.

Audible is an audiobook-centric app but it also features several original podcasts.

Audible is primarily known for audiobooks but the Amazon-backed app also provides a number of podcasts, including Audible Original shows. The “Podcasts” category takes users through a variety of content including shows centered on comedy, relationships, tech, and more.

Once you click a show, such as “Dolly Parton’s America,” you’ll be able to explore reviews from listeners. These reviews include star ratings for the host’s performance, the story, and the overall podcast. This helps make Audible one of the most user-friendly platforms for listener reviews.

When playing a podcast, you can skip ahead or circle back by 30 seconds, connect to Bluetooth, skip or go back to old episodes, and change the speed of the audio from 0.5x to 3.5x. You can also see how much time is left in an episode, switch to carplay for a minimalist user interface, and select between episodes via an episode list option at the bottom of the screen.

Like other podcast platforms, Audible contains a sleep timer and allows for offline listening. Audible users are also able to add podcasts to their library to get them automatically downloaded to their device when new episodes come out.

While Audible boasts a solid selection of Audible Originals, including the crime documentary series “Brooklyn North,” these series are only available to paid subscribers. Other exclusive podcasts include titles like “The Messenger,” “Women Unlocked,” “In the Gap,” and “Soldiers of Science.”

Audible‘s massive audiobook selection could be a great incentive to purchase a Plus subscription if you want a service that offers books and podcasts in one platform.

Plus (Monthly Subscription) (small)

Stitcher has a selection of original podcasts and a wide range of playback options.

Stitcher puts podcasts ahead of all else, unlike a platform like Spotify that also hosts millions of songs. Its layout is also one of the sleekest and most straightforward across podcast apps.

Once you sign in, you can check Stitcher‘s top picks of the week along with curated collections of playlists celebrating the likes of women, Black Americans, Independent artists, and more. Stitcher‘s homepage also includes an assortment of podcasts from different genres such as comedy, news, and more.

There’s a number of Stitcher original shows, as well, including “Dark Arenas,” “Going Deep,” “The Resurr-Erection,” “Unspooled: Screen Test,” “MASCOTS,” and a podcast by “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton. Some shows and episodes are exclusive to Stitcher Premium, however.

Premium also gives you early access to certain new episodes. Other perks for subscribers include ad-free episodes and monthly giveaways. You can see what’s available on Stitcher Premium here.

One of Stitcher‘s unique features is its array of playback options, as the app lets you set a sleep timer, skip episodes you’ve already heard, and adjust your rewind and fast forward times between five seconds and two minutes.

You can also download new episodes automatically, get a list of shows that you’ve downloaded or liked, and trim down on storage by deleting all downloads with one click.

Just like other popular podcast apps, transcripts are only available if the podcast’s creator tags them in the show’s description.

TuneIn Radio

TuneIn offers a number of radio streams from around the world in addition to its podcast catalog.

TuneIn‘s primary focus may be radio but it also includes some popular podcasts. There are plenty of genres to explore via the app’s search tab. The service also curates a number of new podcasts via its homepage so you can easily navigate different collections.

Once you start listening to an episode, you can fast forward or rewind by 30 seconds. You can also display a clock, set an alarm to go off at a certain time, or set a sleep timer. Additionally, you can like episodes by clicking the heart icon to favorite a show for later.

One unique feature with TuneIn is that the app lets you switch to car mode. This is perfect for people who want to listen to podcasts on the go as you get a simplified menu to move between episodes.

A handy “auto-restart player” setting is also included so you can start the stream you last played when you open the app. You can also choose to automatically download episodes and track episodes you recently listened to.

If a podcast isn’t in TuneIn, you can add it to the app via the Custom URL button in your library. Similar to other podcast apps, you can only get transcripts of episodes if the creator makes them available in an episode’s description.

HBO Max lets you watch everything on HBO, plus exclusive shows and brand-new Warner Bros. movies – here’s how to sign up

  • HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s on-demand streaming service, costs $15 a month.
  • It’s the same price as HBO’s cable network, but includes a bigger library of movies and shows.
  • Warner Bros. will also debut all of its 2021 movies on HBO Max the same day they launch in theaters.

Max (small)Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

HBO Max is a streaming service that blends HBO’s library of prestige original series with a huge catalog of blockbuster movies and TV shows provided by WarnerMedia. HBO Max launched in May 2020 for $15 a month.

Most people who subscribe to HBO through cable can claim their own free HBO Max subscription using their provider. In January, parent company AT&T said the service had already reached 40 million subscribers in the US, surpassing a goal it didn’t expect to reach for two more years.

HBO Max features way more content than HBO’s cable offerings, including brand-new theatrical releases from Warner Bros. Older titles and network shows, like “Friends” and “Rick and Morty,” are also available. Subscribers can watch new exclusive movies and series as well, including the sci-fi show “Raised by Wolves.”

With its large collection of programs, and a growing slate of original titles, HBO Max is one of our best reviewed streaming services.

Where can I sign up for HBO Max?

You can sign up for HBO Max right now through In addition to the HBO Max website, you can also sign up for an HBO Max subscription directly through select partner services, including AT&T, DirecTV, AT&T U-Verse, Spectrum, Hulu, YouTube TV, Apple TV, and Google Play.

If you currently pay for HBO in your cable package, you likely already have access to HBO Max as part of your subscription. Depending on your provider, you may be able to sign directly into the HBO Max app, or you’ll be prompted to create an account. You can view a full list of qualifying HBO Max providers here.

How much does HBO Max cost?

HBO Max costs $15 a month, the same price as regular HBO and three dollars less than a premium Netflix subscription. For that price, you get ad-free access to all of the platform’s content.

As mentioned above, most people who already subscribe to HBO are eligible to receive HBO Max at no extra cost to their current subscription fee.

Though HBO Max initially offered a free trial period through its site, that promotion is no longer available. If you sign up for HBO Max as an add-on through Hulu, however, new members can still receive a one-week trial.

The differences between HBO Max, HBO Go, and HBO Now

hbo now

HBO Max is an on-demand streaming platform combining HBO’s iconic original programming with an even larger library of movies and shows from WarnerMedia. The service is essentially a replacement for HBO’s older streaming options: HBO Go and HBO Now.

HBO Go was a streaming companion app for HBO cable subscribers, while HBO Now was a standalone streaming option with access to HBO without cable. On July 31, HBO discontinued the HBO Go app. On that same day, HBO rebranded HBO Now to just “HBO.”

Most people who were using the HBO Go or HBO Now app can now simply use their same account information to sign into HBO Max instead. You can see if your HBO subscription qualifies for HBO Max here.

HBO (formerly HBO Now) will continue to include streaming access to the same library of content that HBO cable subscribers can watch. This includes HBO original programming and the channel’s rotating selection of movies.

HBO Max, however, builds upon this content selection by incorporating more original titles and hundreds of additional TV shows and movies from WarnerMedia. HBO Max also allows you to download and store your favorite shows on your devices to watch while you’re offline.

For the time being, HBO and HBO Max each cost $15 a month. Since HBO Max offers a larger streaming library than HBO, it’s clearly the better choice.

Where can I watch HBO Max?

HBO Max streaming service

HBO Max can be streamed via its official website and the HBO Max app. You can find the app on Apple, Android, Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, and Samsung smart TVs.

Those who sign up for HBO Max directly though a partnered service, like Hulu or Apple TV, will be able to access regular HBO content through the partner service’s app. To watch HBO Max exclusives, however, you still need to use the separate HBO Max app.

Is HBO Max on Roku and Fire TV?

Though HBO Max was initially missing from Fire TV, Roku, and PlayStation devices when it launched in May 2020, the service is now available to download on all of those platforms.

Currently, LG’s smart TVs are the only major connected-devices that are missing native support for the HBO Max app.

What shows and movies are on HBO Max?

Raised by Wolves HBO Max

HBO Max features all of HBO’s original shows, from “The Wire” and “The Sopranos” to “Westworld and “Game of Thrones.” The library also includes the cable channel’s rotating lineup of movies. On top of all that, HBO Max offers additional titles from WarnerMedia’s catalog, as well as new exclusives.

Most notably, HBO Max has become the streaming destination for brand-new movies from Warner Bros. the same day they’re released in theaters. “Godzilla vs. Kong” is the latest movie to premiere on HBO Max and theaters at the same time. New films will remain on HBO Max for 31 days. After that time, they will play exclusively in theaters until their official home video release.

HBO Max also features a handful of new original series, including the sci-fi show “Raised by Wolves,” the comedy series “Love Life” starring Anna Kendrick, and a new “Looney Tunes” show featuring Bugs Bunny and company.

Beyond original programs, the HBO Max catalog offers a wide range of TV series from DC, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Rooster Teeth, and Looney Tunes. The HBO Max movie catalog incorporates critically acclaimed films from the Criterion Collection and Studio Ghibli, alongside hundreds of blockbuster WarnerMedia movies. The service currently hosts 1,300 films.

How to get the Disney Plus bundle with ESPN+ and the different versions of Hulu

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

How to combine Disney Plus, ESPN+ and ad-free Hulu

Bundle Monthly Subscription (small)

At just $8 a month, Disney Plus is one of the most affordable streaming services you can sign up for. The platform features a large collection of movies and shows from Disney’s various brands and franchises, including Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic.

As extensive as the Disney Plus library is, however, the platform does have some weak spots. Most notably, Disney Plus doesn’t offer sports or any currently airing seasons of network shows. The service’s family-friendly library also lacks any R-rated content. Thankfully, Disney Plus offers a discounted bundle with ESPN+ and Hulu to give subscribers those options.

The bundle costs $14 a month, which is about $6 less per month than you’d pay if you subscribed to all three services separately. Though the deal includes the version of Hulu with ads by default, you can pay more to get the bundle with ad-free Hulu or Hulu + Live TV.

How much does the Disney Plus, ESPN+, and Hulu bundle cost?

The bundle with Disney Plus, ESPN+, and Hulu is available in a variety of packages, with prices starting at $14 a month. Here’s a full breakdown of bundle options:

Bundle plan Price
Disney Plus, Hulu Basic, and ESPN+ bundle: $14 a month
Disney Plus, Hulu (ad-free), and ESPN+ bundle: $20 a month
Disney Plus, Hulu Basic + Live TV, and ESPN+ bundle: $73 a month
Disney Plus, Hulu (ad-free) + Live TV, and ESPN+ bundle: $79 a month

How to sign up for the Disney Plus, ESPN+, and Hulu bundle

If you live in the US, signing up for the Disney Plus bundle with Hulu Basic and ESPN+ is as simple as visiting the Disney Plus website and selecting the bundle option. The base package costs $14 a month. If you’re a current subscriber to one of the services, you can upgrade to the discounted bundle here.

Bundle Monthly Subscription (small)

After entering in your email address and payment information you’ll be able to activate your account on each service. You can use the same account information across each platform, but you will need to access each service’s app separately.

This default bundle only includes the ad-supported version of Hulu, but you can get the ad-free or live TV plans if you sign up directly through Hulu. We’ve broken down the process below to make things easy.

How to combine Disney Plus, ESPN+, and ad-free Hulu or Hulu + Live TV

  1. If you’re a new subscriber to these services, visit the Hulu bundle page here to sign up.
  2. You can then select which version of Hulu you’d like with the bundle: Hulu with ads ($14/month), Hulu without ads ($20/month), or Hulu + Live TV ($73/month).
  3. Enter in the required account information and payment details to continue.
  4. Once you finish the sign up process, you’ll be able to access Hulu, Disney Plus, and ESPN+ through their respective apps.
  5. If you’d like to switch Hulu plans or cancel at a later date, you can adjust your subscription through the “Manage Your Account” section of the Hulu website.

Can I upgrade to ad-free Hulu or Hulu + Live TV if I already have the bundle?

If you subscribed to the bundle through Hulu, you can easily upgrade your Hulu plan through the “Manage Your Account” section of the Hulu website.

However, if you originally subscribed to the bundle through Disney, you’ll need to cancel your existing bundle subscription first if you want to upgrade your Hulu plan. After you cancel your bundle subscription, you can sign up for a bundle with Hulu Premium or Hulu + Live TV here.
