With much of our social and professional lives happening online these days, inclusivity for people who are differently abled or who have certain disabilities or limitations has never been more important.

For this reason, TikTok introduced auto captions, a feature that aims to make the popular video-sharing app more accessible to those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Auto captions automatically generate subtitles for videos, allowing viewers to read what’s being said.

How to turn on auto captions on your own TikTok videos

If you’re a TikTok creator and want to turn auto captions on, doing so is straightforward.

1. After creating a new video or uploading a previously created one, tap the check mark to enable editing mode.

2. On the editing page, tap the Captions option on the right side of the screen to enable captions.

Note that the caption process can take a few moments depending on the length of your video. In addition, only spoken words will be captioned; music will not be translated.

How to edit captions on your own TikTok videos

You can edit auto captions from the page depicted in step three in the section above.

1. From the caption display page, tap the edit button, which looks like a small line with a pencil hovering over it to the right of the Captions header, or tap an individual line of captions.

2. Fix any misspellings, correct incorrect words, or separate lines that look too long, and tap Save.

3. Tap Save when you’re happy with how your captions look, and proceed to tap Post to publish the video.

How to turn off auto captions on a TikTok video you’re viewing

While many people find captions useful or necessary when watching TikTok videos, not everyone loves or needs the feature. If you prefer to enjoy content without auto captions, you can disable them.

1. When watching a TikTok video, tap one one of the captions as it pops up on the screen.

2. A small bubble will appear above or below the caption. Tap Hide captions. The captions will then disappear behind a small text box.

How to use the ‘secret conversation’ feature in Facebook Messenger to keep your chat secure

person using bright phone outside at night
Secret conversations keep your Messenger chats private.

  • You can make a “secret conversation” in Messenger by starting a new conversation and tapping the icon in the top-right corner.
  • Messenger’s secret conversations are encrypted, meaning that your messages are incredibly private – not even Facebook can read them.
  • Secret conversations are only available in the Messenger mobile app, not the website.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

In the past few years, encrypted messaging apps have become increasingly popular. Signal, Telegram – and now Messenger.

Despite being run by a company not known for its data security, Messenger’s “secret conversation” feature is a legitimately safe way to chat with friends and colleagues. Secret conversations are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning that no one outside the chat can read what’s inside.

It’s similar to Vanish Mode, another Messenger feature that prioritizes secret and secure conversations.

If you care about privacy and want to use Messenger, secret conversations should be your go-to tool. Here’s how to start a secret conversation and customize its settings.

How to make a secret conversation in Messenger

Secret conversations are exclusive to the iPhone, iPad, and Android Messenger apps. You won’t find them in the Messenger desktop app or website.

1. Open the Messenger app and tap the compose message icon in the top-right corner.

2. A list of all your contacts will appear. Here, tap the button in the top-right corner – on an iPhone or iPad it’ll say Secret, while on an Android it’ll be a switch with a padlock icon.

Turn on the secret conversation mode by tapping the button in the top-right.

3. Tap the person who you want to have a secret conversation with. It has to be a one-on-one chat – you can’t have a secret group chat.

4. You’ll be brought into a secret conversation with the person you chose. Once you send a message, it’ll appear on their device.

Your secret conversations are “end-to-end encrypted,” meaning they’re secure at all times.

If you’re Facebook friends with the person on the other end of the chat, you can enable disappearing messages as well. These let you put a timer on every message sent, so they’ll delete themselves after a short period of time.

1. At the top of the secret conversation, tap the other chatter’s name (iPhone or iPad) or the “i” icon (Android) to open the options menu.

2. Tap Disappearing Messages, and then choose how long you want messages to last.

If you enable disappearing messages, your messages can last up to a day.

Additionally, you can report the person you’re chatting with, block them, or just delete the chat. To do so, open the options menu again and tap Something’s Wrong, Block, or Delete Chat respectively.

What a ‘This person is unavailable on Messenger’ error means on Facebook Messenger, and how to resolve it

Facebook Messenger
A message telling you “This person is unavailable on Messenger” means you can’t send messages.

  • If you see “This person is unavailable on Messenger” when trying to chat with someone, they might have blocked you.
  • It could also mean that they’ve deactivated or deleted their Messenger account, or been banned.
  • In some cases you might not see this error, and instead you’ll just be told your messages can’t be sent.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Despite its popularity, Facebook can be very vague when it comes to explaining why its apps aren’t working correctly. You can’t contact Facebook directly, which means relying on the platform’s Support Center to get help.

But not every error message is listed in the Support Center. For example: What does it mean when the Messenger app tells you “This person is unavailable on Messenger?”

Here’s a full guide to what the error message means, and how to fix it if you think something’s wrong.

What does ‘This person is unavailable on Messenger’ mean?

If you’re seeing this message in your conversation with someone on Messenger, it means that you can’t chat with them – obviously. But what causes it?

A screenshot of a Facebook Messenger conversation, where the “This person is unavailable on Messenger" is visible.
If you see this error, it means that you can’t send messages.

There are a few common reasons.

  • The person you’re trying to contact has blocked you, either on Messenger or Facebook as a whole. If you’re not sure whether you’ve been blocked, check out our article on deciphering the signs of a Facebook block.
A Facebook Messenger window saying that the user has blocked the person on the other end of the chat.
You may have been blocked by the person you’re trying to chat with.

The “This person is unavailable on Messenger” error can pop up when any of these happen. And unfortunately, there’s no way to get around it by yourself – you’ll have to convince the person you want to chat with to unblock you or make a new Messenger account.

At least, assuming there hasn’t just been a glitch. If the error message appears but you’re sure that you’re not blocked and your friend is still on Messenger, try logging out and back into your account. If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Messenger app. This could fix the issue.

Knowing how to loop a YouTube video can be useful when you’re watching instructional videos.

  • You can loop a YouTube video on the desktop website via the video settings.
  • YouTube has also added the loop feature for the mobile app, so you can loop videos and playlists.
  • You can also use third-party sites to loop entire videos, or parts of videos, if desired.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

With tons of new content being uploaded to YouTube every day, viewers are at no loss for something new to watch. But sometimes you don’t want something new, so setting a video to loop over and over again can be a good option.

Looping a video can be helpful if you’re learning a new skill from a YouTube tutorial, or if you simply want an ambient video to continuously play in the background at an event.

Here’s how to set up the feature on desktop or via the mobile app.

How to loop a YouTube video on desktop

This works regardless of the web browser you’re using.

1. On the YouTube website, go to the video you want to put on repeat.

How to add and edit YouTube subtitles to your videos in 4 different ways

businessman in office looking at laptop
There’s a handful of different ways to add subtitles to your YouTube videos.

  • You can add subtitles to your YouTube videos a few different ways, like uploading a pre-written file or using auto-sync.
  • For some videos uploaded to YouTube, captions will automatically generate.
  • If you choose to manually add captions, there are keyboard shortcuts to help you speed things up.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

When you make YouTube videos, it’s important to consider your audience, including viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Adding subtitles and captions is one way to make your videos more accessible so more people can watch and enjoy your content.

Here’s what you need to know to add subtitles and captions to your YouTube videos.

How to add subtitles on YouTube Studio

There are several options for adding subtitles: uploading a pre-written file, using auto-sync, typing them out manually, or using auto-translate.

Upload a pre-written file

Uploading a file that contains what is said in the video is one way to add captions to a video.

1. Sign in to your YouTube Studio account.

2. Select Subtitles, located in the left sidebar.

Screenshot of YouTube channel page
Click “Subtitles” on the left.

3. Click the video that you’d like to edit.

4. Select Add Language and select your preferred language.

Auto-sync

Auto-sync lets you type out your transcript all at once, and then the transcript is automatically synced to the timing of your video.

1. Go into YouTube Studio and select Subtitles in the left sidebar.

2. Select your video from the list and then click Add, located under subtitles.

3. Choose Auto-sync in the pop-up menu.

Click “Auto-sync.”

4. Type in the entire transcript of your video in the text box to the left, or click the three dots next to Edit Timings and choose Upload file.

If you don’t want to type in your transcript, you can instead upload a file containing your transcript.

5. Once you’ve added the text or uploaded your file, select Edit Timings.

Click “Edit Timings.”

6. Click Save and Close.

Type manually

1. Log into your YouTube Studio account.

2. Choose Subtitles in the left sidebar.

3. Select your desired video.

4. Click Add, under Subtitles.

5. Select Type manually.

Click “Type manually.”

6. Play the video and enter your captions or subtitles, adjusting the timestamps as necessary. You should add text tags like [applause] or [thunder] to help give viewers necessary context.

Screenshot of "type manually" page on YouTube
Type your text in the box on the left.

7. Select Publish when ready.

Using keyboard shortcuts while adding your captions can speed up the process:

  • Shift + left arrow: Go back 1 second.
  • Shift + right arrow: Go forward 1 second.
  • Shift + space: Pause or play your video.
  • Shift + enter: Add a new line.
  • Shift + down arrow: Edit the next subtitle.
  • Shift + up arrow: Edit the previous subtitle.
  • Enter: Add a subtitle.

Auto-translate

YouTube adds automatic captions to certain long-form videos and shorts. Just be aware that this feature is limited to 13 languages.

Automatic captions are also being rolled out for live streams. However, that’s limited to English-language streams from those who have over 1,000 subscribers.

Once generated, you can still review auto-captions and make any necessary changes:

1. Log into your account and go into the YouTube Studio.

2. Choose Subtitles in the left sidebar.

3. Select the video you want to review.

4. Under Subtitles, click the three dots next to the video you want to review or edit.

5. Review the auto-captions, and Edit or Remove parts of the auto-captions, as desired.

If you’re seeing a lot of errors in your auto-captions, there are several key reasons why that could be happening, which you can watch out for when making future videos:

  • Captions aren’t available yet because there’s complex audio in your video.
  • The language in the video uses a language that isn’t supported for auto-captions.
  • The video is too long for auto-captions.
  • There’s poor sound quality, or YouTube isn’t recognizing the speech.
  • A long period of silence at the beginning of the video is preventing auto-captions from working.
  • There are multiple speakers in the video, with overlapping speech.

How to use Messenger’s Vanish Mode, a feature that lets you send disappearing messages

A graphic advertising Facebook Messenger's Vanish Mode.
Vanish Mode is available on both Messenger and Instagram.

  • Vanish Mode is a feature in Messenger that lets you send disappearing messages to your friends.
  • Once a friend sees your Vanish Mode message and closes the chat, your message will delete itself.
  • You can access Vanish Mode by swiping up in an active Messenger chat.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

The past decade has seen more and more social media users turn to apps like Snapchat and Instagram to post “temporary” updates. Whether it be images that only last for a few seconds or Stories that only last a day, users love the exclusivity and privacy of disappearing messages.

That’s what Messenger’s Vanish Mode is for. Vanish Mode is another temporary social media app, just like the ones you probably use every day.

Here’s how Vanish Mode works and how to use it.

What is Vanish Mode in Messenger?

Vanish Mode is a feature in the Messenger app that lets you send temporary messages to anyone you have an active chat with. These messages only last until the recipient reads them, after which they’ll disappear. It’s a great way to send quick messages without clogging up your regular chat.

If you or your friend take a screenshot of the Vanish Mode chat, both users will be alerted. And if you want to report a chat conversation, any Vanish Mode messages will be included in the report for up to an hour after you’ve seen them.

A screenshot of a black screen titled "Vanish Mode," along with a highlighted message that says "You took a screenshot."
Both users will know when someone takes a screenshot.

It’s also turned off by default, meaning that if someone sends you a Vanish Mode message, you’ll have to put your own chat in Vanish Mode before you see their messages (and vice-versa).

Vanish Mode is available in the Messenger app on iPhone and Android for everyone in the United States, and it’s slowly rolling out worldwide.

How to use Vanish Mode in Messenger

To use Vanish Mode, you’ll need to have the Messenger app (previously known as Facebook Messenger) installed on your iPhone or Android.

1. Open Messenger and open or start a chat with someone. It’ll need to be a one-on-one conversation – Vanish Mode doesn’t work in group chats.

2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen. You should see a message telling you to swipe for Vanish Mode. Keep dragging your finger until the circle icon is entirely filled.

You’ll see an introduction screen the first time you turn on Vanish Mode.

4. On the Vanish Mode screen, you can send messages or pictures like a normal conversation. These will last until the recipient sees your message, and then closes the chat.

You can leave Vanish Mode by tapping Turn Off Vanish Mode at the top of the screen, or by swiping up from the bottom again.
