6 ways to troubleshoot Chromecast audio issues and get your sound working again

Google Chromecast
Audio issues aren’t unheard of for the Google Chromecast.

  • You can fix your Chromecast’s audio issues in several easy ways.
  • If your Chromecast is having audio issues, check your TV’s settings, and restart the app you’re playing from.
  • Google also offers an interactive tool to help diagnose and troubleshoot Chromecast audio issues.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Google’s Chromecast allows users to easily stream media from other devices onto their TV. All it takes is an HD television and an internet connection.

It’s a pretty clever device, but it’s not without its issues and glitches. Users have reported problems with audio cutting out or simply not playing despite the video playing perfectly, for example. When this happens, it’s up to the user to troubleshoot these issues – luckily, they’re usually easy to fix.

How to troubleshoot a Google Chromecast’s audio issues

Here are five ways you can troubleshoot your Chromecast sound and audio issues before you go out and buy a replacement device.

Check your TV or other device’s settings

Woman adjusting TV settings
Adjust your device’s sound settings to fix Chromecast audio issues.

It’s important to make sure the speakers on the device you’re casting to are set to enabled, and that your volume is turned up.

Some modern TVs will disable their internal speakers to use external speakers or sound systems. Check to see that you have the correct settings turned on. If you’re not sure how to find this or the usual method doesn’t work, consider resetting your TV to its default or factory settings. That should restore the internal speakers.

Ensure your Chromecast is working correctly

google chromecast
Double-check that your Chromecast is updated and plugged in properly.

To rule out any hardware issues, you should always check to see that your Chromecast is plugged in properly – both to your TV and to the power socket on your wall.

You can test this further by plugging your Chromecast into a different wall socket or HDMI jack on your TV. You can also try switching out the HDMI cord for the micro-USB cord and plugging that in to see if it solves the issue.

Reboot your Chromecast device using the Google Home app

Rebooting your Chromecast could iron out any issues, audio-related or otherwise, and takes only a few seconds. Here’s how to do it.

1. Launch the Google Home app on your device.

2. Select the Chromecast device on your home screen that you’re experiencing issues with.

Chromecast 1
Select the Chromecast device you want to reboot.

3. Tap the cog on the upper right-hand corner of your screen to open the Settings option.

Chromecast 2
Open your Chromecast device settings.

4. Choose the three-dotted “More” icon to open your extra settings.

Chromecast 3
The three-dot icon is vertical on Android and horizontal on iPhone.

5. Select “Reboot.”

Chromecast 4
Tap Reboot to restart your Chromecast device.

6. Wait for your Chromecast device to restart and confirm your sound issues have been resolved.

Restart your selected media

woman controls smart tv with phone
Try stopping and restarting your media to see if the audio glitch is fixed.

Sometimes Chromecast audio issues are simply a random glitch that can be solved by stopping and restarting the media you wish to play. Try disconnecting from the Chromecast device in question, then reconnecting before restarting the video or music you’re listening to.

Use the Google Home app’s sound settings to fix sound delays

Sometimes sound issues arise because your sound system is more advanced. The Google Home app has a tool to help you get your audio synced when you’re casting to a group of devices, like a set of speakers.

To fix the issue and your Chromecast audio, select the Chromecast device you’re using from the Google Home app’s main screen, tap the gear icon to access your settings, and then choose “Group delay correction.”

Chromecast 5
You can fix Chromecast sound delays with grouped speakers in the Google Home app.

From here, Google suggests you cast music to your “group” of speakers or devices, stand by the device where you hear the delay, and using the slider, move it left or right until the audio is synced.

Follow Google’s interactive walkthrough to troubleshoot your issues

Google offers an interactive, step-by-step tool to diagnose and fix issues with either your Chromecast or Chromecast Audio devices.

Troubleshoot Chromecast issue
Google offers an interactive troubleshooting tool for Chromecast users.

You can get tips and fixes for the most common problems you might experience, though they also have a community where you can ask questions and receive answers from fellow users.

And if all else fails, you can contact Google customer support.

man at home watching streaming from phone to TV laptop
It’s easy to connect your iPhone to your TV in a few different ways.

  • You can connect your iPhone to a TV using an AV cable, AirPlay, or screen mirroring.
  • To AirPlay or screen mirror your iPhone, you also need to have an Apple TV or AirPlay 2-compatible smart TV.
  • With AirPlay, you can stream content directly from video apps like Hulu and HBO Max.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

No matter what your reason, it’s easy to connect your iPhone to a TV or computer monitor. Photos and videos display at full resolution – much better than the limited resolution of your iPhone – so connecting an iPhone to a larger screen can be a viable substitute for a smart TV.

There are three ways to connect your iPhone to a television or monitor: via an AV cable, using your iPhone’s built-in screen mirroring feature, or using AirPlay from directly within third-party apps like Hulu.

The process is essentially identical to connecting your iPad to a TV, and in fact, you can use the same adapter or Apple TV for both your iPhone and iPad.

What is Sonos S2? Here’s what you need to know about the latest app and operating system for Sonos audio devices

sonos airplay
The newest operating system for Sonos speakers is Sonos S2.

  • Sonos S2 is the newest version of the Sonos operating system and family of mobile apps, replacing Sonos S1.
  • Sonos S2 includes support for higher quality audio, Dolby Atmos, and other features that will appear in future Sonos devices.
  • Not all older Sonos products are compatible with Sonos S2, but some new Sonos speakers won’t work with Sonos S1.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Sonos S2 is the latest version of the Sonos music platform’s operating system and apps. It’s a major update to the system, one that represents a major shift in the way Sonos treats product compatibility. Instead of all products working together, some new products require Sonos S2, while some old products require Sonos S1.

What to know about Sonos S2

Sonos S2 is the latest version of the Sonos app and operating system, and it’s generally referred to as simply Sonos.

If you are continuing to use the older version of the software, though, the app is renamed Sonos S1 Controller (for Android and iOS) to more clearly differentiate them. Sonos S2 apps (on Android and iOS) are referred to as “Sonos.”

What_is_Sonos_S2 1
Sonos S2 is referred to as simply “Sonos.” Only Sonos S1 is described with a version number.

The major changes in the Sonos S2 operating system are behind the scenes, designed to facilitate features found in new and future Sonos products. The S2 version fixes bugs and enhances the overall security of the system, while also increasing the bandwidth for music to support higher fidelity and better-quality audio. S2 also includes support for Dolby Atmos surround sound (which is now found in the Sonos Arc sound bar).

The app is also substantially redesigned with a simplified interface and the ability to save room groupings so it’s easier to play music in multiroom situations with just a tap or two.

What_is_Sonos_S2 2
You can now set up room groups and save them for future use using the plus sign.

Compatibility with Sonos devices

If you have the Sonos S1 system installed, Sonos will offer to upgrade to S2 when you start an app to control a speaker. You can defer this till later and keep using S1, but if you choose to upgrade to Sonos S2, you cannot go back – the upgrade is permanent.

Before you upgrade, you should be aware of compatibility issues between Sonos S1 and S2. Most of the contemporary products in the Sonos family will work fine regardless of whether you are using Sonos S1 or S2.

These products are compatible with either version of the operating system:

  • Amp
  • Beam
  • Boost
  • Connect (Gen 2)
  • Connect:Amp (Gen 2)
  • Move
  • One (Gen 1 and Gen 2)
  • One SL
  • Play:1
  • Play:3
  • Play:5 (Gen 2)
  • Playbar
  • Playbase
  • Port
  • Sub (Gen 1 and Gen 2)
  • Symfonisk

A few Sonos products only work with Sonos S1:

  • Bridge
  • CR200
  • Connect (Gen 1)
  • Connect:Amp (Gen 1)
  • Play:5 (Gen 1)
  • All ZonePlayers

Sonos products that only work with Sonos S2:

Finally, as of right now, there are a few new products that require Sonos S2 to work properly. In the future, Sonos will likely release more products that are only compatible with Sonos S2, so it’s a good idea to transition to S2 when possible:

  • Arc
  • Five
  • Sub (Gen 3)

In the relatively unlikely case that you own Sonos speakers from both extremes – an old product that requires Sonos S1 and a new one that requires Sonos S2, it’s possible to maintain both Sonos networks in your home at once, but the two networks can’t work together, such as sharing room groups.

How to translate live conversations with Google Assistant using its built-in Interpreter Mode

woman on phone in car
Google Assistant’s Interpreter Mode is particularly useful when traveling abroad and in situations that require navigating language barriers.

  • You can translate conversations with Google Assistant in up to 44 languages by using its Interpreter Mode, which is built into the Google Assistant app.
  • Google Assistant is an artificial intelligence-based program, similar to Siri and Alexa, that has the capability to translate a conversation in real-time, among many other things.
  • Its Interpreter Mode is now available on iOS devices and Androids, in addition to smart speakers and tablets.
  • Currently, Interpreter Mode can only be used online, unlike Google Translate.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Google Assistant is a virtual assistant, similar to Siri and Alexa, that is fueled by artificial intelligence to perform various tasks. The company calls it “your own personal Google” – the artificial intelligence component, much like its search engine, brings the internet to you and answers your questions.

You can ask Google Assistant to play music, look up sports scores, search for directions, and even control your home through its smart devices. Google Assistant is available on many “smart” platforms, including smartphones, Google Home speakers, tablets, and displays.

Real-time translation is among its many features and is particularly helpful when traveling abroad and navigating conversations with language barriers. After getting Google Assistant’s attention (just say “Hey Google”), command it to be your translator in any language. Interpreter Mode will automatically be activated.

We’ll show you how to both use this feature and troubleshoot potential problems.

How to translate conversations with Google Assistant

Google Assistant for phones and tablets has a few more language options than the version for smart speakers and displays, one being Urdu, the official national language of Pakistan.

1. If you’re using an iPhone, you’ll need to download the Google Assistant app from the App Store. (It’s already included in the operating system on Androids.)

2. Open the app and say “Hey Google” or hit the microphone icon. The AI is now listening.

3. Say something like “Be my French interpreter,” “Interpret from English to French,” or “Turn on Interpreter Mode.”

4. Google Assistant will ask you what languages you want to be translated if you haven’t yet specified. Depending on your settings, it can also detect the language according to your location.

How to translate conversations with Google assistant 1.PNG
Specify the other language or start speaking.

5. You’ll hear a tone when translation mode is on. Just start talking. The AI will know which language is being spoken.

6. You can also set it so that the keyboard types out the translations instead of speaking them.

How to translate conversations with Google assistant 3.PNG
You can choose to hear the translation or see it on the keyboard.

7. Swipe from left to right to turn off interpreter mode, or say “Stop.”

How to fix potential issues with Google Assistant

Artificial intelligence-powered technology isn’t always perfect, so there’s a chance you may run into issues while using Google Assistant.

Google Assistant won’t recognize every command. The following will not activate Interpreter Mode:

  • “Translate.”
  • “Speak French” (or any language).
  • “Can you speak French?” (or any language).

Remember to wait for the tone before speaking or Google Assistant may not catch everything you say. Also, double check that your device is compatible with Interpreter Mode.

Remain close to your device while speaking, speak clearly, and make sure your pronunciation is correct. Otherwise, Google Assistant may translate you incorrectly.

Make sure you speak clearly so that Google Assistant can translate properly.
