Target Clean Beauty 4x3

In recent years, Target has made a massive effort to bring on clean, natural, sustainable, or otherwise eco-friendly brands – so you can worry less about buyer’s remorse on your next shopping spree.

From the recycled packaging of Love Beauty and Planet to the botanical-based makeup from W3LL People, the store carries ethically made beauty products at prices we love. Consider it the new “triple threat” – safe ingredients, sustainable packaging, and accessible pricing.

Target currently carries nearly 2,800 beauty products tagged with a Target Clean symbol, so you can make a more informed buying decision quickly and easily. These products meet Target’s own clean standards, so you won’t find formulas with parabens, sulfates, and other ingredients included on the retailer’s “No List.” Read more about this in our clean beauty FAQ, below.

Here are the 11 best clean beauty brands and products you can shop at Target:

Honest Beauty

Honest Beauty EXTREME LENGTH MASCARA + LASH PRIMER

Why we love it: Founded by Jessica Alba, The Honest Company hits the two main components of clean beauty: transparency and safe ingredients. Each product follows a “no list” which is an evolving list of over 2,500 chemicals the brand chooses not to use. Honest also avoids listing fragrance as an ingredient because it can be used as an umbrella term to hide harmful ingredients. We love the Hydrogel Cream and 2-in-1 Mascara that’s won several beauty awards.

Function of Beauty

FOB Target

Why we love it: Function of Beauty has changed the world of beauty forever with its line of customizable haircare. (We love it so much we’ve recommended it several times over) Not only is it effective for different hair types but it contains safer ingredients. The formulas are 92% naturally-derived, sulfate-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free, and 100% vegan. Even the bottles and cartons are made with recycled materials that are 100% recyclable.

Why we love it: Along with being vegan and cruelty-free, Bliss products are thoughtfully formulated to be free from over 1,300 harmful substances you don’t want on your skin. The brand follows the European Union’s standards, considered to be the highest in the world for skincare safety. And, Bliss does your skincare game justice with its products. Powered by clinical-grade vitamin C and peptides, the Bright Idea line boosts brightness and elasticity in the first use.

Native

Native Plastic Free Deodorant

Why we love it: Native creates clean bodycare products that are both paraben- and aluminum-free. And, the brand recently launched its fan-favorite deodorant in plastic-free packaging. (We’re big fans of the Coconut & Vanilla scent for its refreshing tropical smell) As a member of 1% for the Planet, Native donates 1% of Plastic Free sales to fight plastic pollution. Switching from the Classic packaging to Native Plastic Free will help reduce plastic waste by about 169 tons each year.

Method

Method Men Body Wash

Why we love it: Method makes cleanliness, well, clean. Popular for its gentle yet effective cleaning products, Method lets you clean your home sans the breath-holding side effects. The same can be said for its body washes, deodorants, and haircare, all of which are made without parabens or phthalates. The formulas are packed with plant-based cleansers that can be used by both families and their pets.

Versed

Versed Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm

Why we love it: Versed ingredients aren’t all natural, but they are all proven safe for the skin and body. “Not all natural ingredients are good for your skin — like poison ivy —  and not all synthetic ingredients are bad for your skin — like hyaluronic acid — so our ‘no list’ is informed by what the leading regulatory bodies are doing and what’s important to our community,” Melanie Bender, the president of Versed, told Insider.

Similar to Bliss, Versed formulates to EU standards, avoiding over 1,300 chemicals in their products. In addition to clean, safe formulations, Versed offers sustainable packaging. About 60% of the brand’s bottles, tubes, and boxes are recyclable.

Love Beauty and Planet

Love Beauty and Planet Soothe and Nourish Hemp Seed Shampoo

Why we love it: Personal-care company Love Beauty and Planet is all about the little things, making small tweaks to the sourcing, formulating, and design processes for its products (which include haircare, deodorant, and even dish soap), to cut down on waste in more ways than one.

For starters, every bottle is made from 100% recycled materials and can be recycled (by you) once they’re empty. The ingredients are ethically sourced and organic; and while that’s great for your skin and hair, it’s also great for the fair-wage workers that harvest said ingredients. Love Beauty and Planet’s haircare products feature something they call “fast-rinse technology,” which means you can take shorter showers and save water.

Hello

hello Activated Charcoal Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste

Why we love it: Toothpaste may be an afterthought for some, but many traditional formulas feature less-than-natural ingredients and potentially harmful chemicals, like parabens and peroxide. That’s where oral-care brand Hello comes in. “Our products are free of artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, dyes, SLS/sulfates, parabens, microbeads, triclosan, and peroxide,” Craig Dubitsky, the founder of Hello, told Insider.

Its Activated Charcoal Whitening Toothpaste (our top choice) is a must since it leaves your mouth feeling fresh and is sourced from sustainable bamboo. “Our products are vegan and cruelty-free, and our pastes and rinses are made in the US,” Dubitsky added.

W3LL People

W3LL People Expressionist Pro Mascara

Why we love it: All of W3LL People’s formulas — from foundation and highlighter to mascara and lipstick — are formulated with hydrating, plant-based ingredients and contain no toxic chemicals, fillers, or preservatives. Basically, the brand is all about the power of botanicals. Its favorite is aloe vera, which was known as “the plant of immortality” by the ancient Egyptians, and can be found in almost every product W3LL People makes. Plus, one of the founders is a professional makeup artist, so you know the formulas hold up.

Saalt

Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup Regular

Why we love it: “In the US alone, 20 billion menstrual products are disposed of annually,” Cherie Hoeger and Amber Fawson, the founders of menstrual cup company Saalt, told Insider. Traditional pads and tampons are among the most polluting products on the planet, turning women toward alternatives like the Saalt Cup.

Saalt’s medical-grade silicone menstrual cups are inserted like a tampon to collect menstrual fluid. They can be reused for up to 10 years, making menstrual cups “one of the simplest ways to divert massive amounts of waste,” said the founders. It’s a safe, hassle-free period experience, too. It’s pretty comfortable (I promise), can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, and it also translates to over thousands in savings, since you no longer have to buy tampons or pads every month.

Rael

Rael

Why we love it: These feminine products use a natural pulp core and non-toxic adhesive, making Rael’s products as clean and eco-friendly as possible, said Yanghee Paik, a co-founder of organic, feminine-care company Rael

“The traditional pads I’d been using contained not only chlorine, fragrance, and pesticides, but also carcinogens and irritants such as styrene (used in car tires), chloromethane (used in petroleum refining), and acetone (nail polish remover), which can often cause cramps, allergic reactions, and skin irritations,” Paik said.

The brand’s organic cotton pads are now available at Target, making them “easily accessible to all women around the country,” as Paik says. They’re also priced in line with non-organic options ($4.99-$6.99).

Reviews Style and Beauty FAQ Banner

What does Target Clean mean?

Target Clean is a new, easy way to identify products formulated without harmful ingredients. Look for the Target Clean symbol in store and online to find over 4,000 products that meet their clean standard.

All beauty products certified as Target Clean are formulated without the following: propyl-parabens, butyl-parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, formaldehyde-donors, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), Oxybenzone, SLES, retinyl palmitate, hydroquinone, triclosan, triclocarban, BHA & BHT.

  • Deodorant: Additionally formulated without aluminum.
  • Oral care: Additionally formulated without artificial sweeteners.

What is considered clean beauty?

Clean beauty follows two simple standards: transparency and safe ingredients. You should know exactly what you’re getting with a glance at the label. As for safe ingredients, the Good Face Index ranks every cosmetic ingredient based on safety and toxicity. But some general ones to avoid are parabens, sulfates, oxybenzone, and formaldehyde.

Just because a product is organic, natural, or green, doesn’t mean it’s non-toxic. Manmade ingredients are clean as long as they’re safe and non-toxic. This also means that clean beauty doesn’t have to be all-natural, preservative-free, etc.

In Europe, over 1,300 potentially harmful chemicals are banned from cosmetics. In the United States, that number is just 11. Unfortunately, clean beauty products are not regulated by the FDA, so it’s up to the brand’s discretion.

Flamingo Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Though a popular business strategy for new startups today is to sell direct-to-consumer through their own websites, the practice often serves as a springboard for other retail opportunities, not an outright boycott. Direct-to-consumer selling hasn’t replaced brick-and-mortar stores; rather, it has helped redefine how to create brand experiences and nurture loyal customer followings.

In a similar fashion, many online startups eventually find their way into popular retail stores that you’ve been shopping at for years, whether for a limited run or a long-term residency. It’s just another way for these startups to get their products in front of more eyes, plus it’s undeniably convenient to shop all your favorites at one site and enjoy free shipping and return perks.

Target is one such home to many direct-to-consumer startups you might recognize across personal care, bedding, food, pets, and more. It’s the perfect place to discover new and innovative brands, so it’s no wonder the following 22 online companies have decided to sell through the company.

Here are 22 popular online startups you can now find at Target:

Maelove’s under-$35 skincare products are on par with many luxury brands I’ve tried – here’s what they’re like to use

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Maelove Collection

  • I try a lot of skincare products for my job, and Maelove is one of my most recommended brands.
  • Maelove is a skincare line founded by MIT grads and most of the products are under $30.
  • Learn more about the company, the products, and how they make skincare so affordable, below.

It doesn’t take long when you’re at a Sephora to realize that plenty of skincare is not affordable. Glossy tubs of La Mer go for $190, and there’s an $85 Peter Thomas Roth mask made with pure 24-karat gold.

But, if you know where to look, you can find skincare products that perform on par with luxury picks. Companies like Maelove, a startup founded by MIT grads, use many of the same ingredients and cosmetics labs as high-end brands but sell products for a fraction of the cost, like a skincare version of Italic.

Formulas are based more firmly in exhaustive research than the farm-to-face movement, and each product in the line is listed under $30, with the exception of the Love 31 face oil ($74.95) and the Moonlight Retinal Super Serum ($34.95, currently sold out).

Maelove, $28

What’s better, though, is the quality for the price. I try a lot of skincare products – both luxury and drugstore – for my job at Insider Reviews, and if I could only recommend one skincare brand to my friends and family, this would probably be it. The products work well, they’re not expensive, and the startup rarely disappoints. Like the loophole of buying Differin gel rather than Differin cream to save $200, Maelove is one way to save hundreds on the essentials without making any concessions when it comes to what goes into the products themselves. Below, you can learn more about what makes up the Maelove skincare line, including many that I’ve personally tested and reviewed.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

The Glow Maker serum

The Glow Maker ($28) is a vitamin C serum that works to brighten your complexion, even tone, and lighten dark spots. It’s lightweight and sinks in quickly and completely without leaving any tacky residue. And while vitamin C serums can be drying, Maelove’s iteration has a botanical blend and hyaluronic acid (which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water) to prevent it.

Consumers have been quick to note the Glow Maker has a very similar ingredient list to the multi-award-winning C E Ferulic Serum ($166), despite being more than $130 cheaper.

Read my full review of The Glow Maker here.

The Night Renewer cream

The Night Renewer ($28), is one of my favorite products. It uses 10% medical-grade AHA, a blend of soothing ingredients, and hyaluronic acid to gently resurface the skin for better texture and more even tone without being too harsh or drying. It took the company years of research to master something gentle and effective, and they’ve nailed it here. After one night of use, I noticed an improvement to my skin’s texture and tone and have noticed it fades dark spots over time. My pores also look a little smaller.

Read my full review of the Night Renewer here.

The One Cream daily moisturizer

The One Cream ($28, currently sold out) is an everyday moisturizer that will hydrate without clogging pores. It’s good for all skin types, and it goes on lightweight and absorbs quickly and completely. When I’m not testing another cream, this is the budget-friendly one I prefer – there’s never any irritation to my sensitive skin, and it deals with dry patches well.

Read my full review of The One Cream here.

The Eye Enhancer eye cream

The Eye Enhancer ($28) hydrates, tightens, and brightens the delicate skin around the eyes. A little goes a long way, and it absorbs into the skin for an all-day brightness and de-puffing boost. Cold-pressed Robusta Coffee seed extract, which is full of antioxidants and polyphenols, reduces water retention and puffiness, and a botanical complex soothes the thin, sensitive skin around your eyes. But if you’re used to a thicker eye cream this may not be for you – it’s very lightweight.

The Day Eraser makeup remover and cleanser

The Day Eraser ($19, currently sold out) is a thicker, more oily cousin to micellar water. Maelove went through over 90 product iterations before landing on this one. It’s a two-in-one makeup remover and face cleanser that respects the skin’s natural moisture barrier and doesn’t leave it feeling stripped or dry. It can remove waterproof makeup and still leave skin feeling smooth and hydrated. I like using it as a makeup remover and first cleanser because it’s gentle and silky, but grabs waterproof mascara off my eyelashes without rubbing them. But, sometimes I apply too much. And since I don’t wear makeup often, I tend to favor Bioderma Micellar Water for its slightly easier application.

The Deep Exfoliator face polish

The Deep Exfoliator ($24) is a good, relatively gentle exfoliant. Its ingredients include BHA (salicylic acid) and pulverized clay to draw out impurities and absorb excess sebum, and niacinamide (vitamin B3), glycerin, allantoin, and vitamin E to restore moisture. When used a few times a week, it helps resurface your skin for better tone and texture. It works best when combined with another AHA/BHA like the Night Renewer, but it’s nice on its own – and especially for sensitive skin types. If you’re looking for a stronger exfoliant and don’t want to buy both, I recommend buying the Night Renewer.

The NIA 10 Calming Serum

The NIA 10 Calming Serum ($27.95) is designed for dry, inflamed, sensitive, acne-prone skin. Niacinamide (vitamin B3), zinc, and white tea extract work to calm the skin and improve redness and tone over time. I noticed it helped calm my blemishes and made my pores look noticeably smaller. In terms of redness, it’s helped slightly with steady use, but the results have not been drastic. If redness is your main concern and your skin is too sensitive for vitamin C serums, this is worth checking out as an alternative. Otherwise, the Glow Maker may be better for overall tone correction.

Read my full review of the NIA 10 Calming Serum here.

The Refresher face wash

The Refresher ($18.95) is a gentle cleanser that helps clean the skin without disrupting its natural moisture barrier, but it can be slightly drying if you’re used to other simple, gentle cleansers like Cetaphil. The Refresher uses a blend of AHAs (lactic, malic, and tartaric) to remove dead or dull skin cells, and without a moisturizer after, it can be drying. Personally, I like that the AHAs help calm my breakouts and remove dull skin, but if you’re prone to dryness, you may want to stick with Cetaphil. The internal straw also doesn’t reach all the way to the bottom of the bottle, so you may have to dig for the last bit of the face wash.

The Moonlight Retinal Super Serum

The Moonlight Retinal Super Serum ($35, currently sold out) is Maelove’s first retinal product and, while it uses an ingredient that’s more efficient than retinol, it’s relatively inexpensive at $35 an ounce. It’s currently sold out, but you can sign up for alerts here. Like other vitamin A products, Moonlight is designed to increase the body’s natural processes that combat signs of aging: cell turnover, collagen production, improving discoloration, hydrating the skin, and reducing acne.

Maelove claims its Moonlight serum delivers “prescription level benefits” over-the-counter. And, retinaldehyde is actually stronger than retinol according to celebrity dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman. However, Dr. Engelman also says it can have more intense effects – like dryness. To balance out the formula, Moonlight includes niacinamide, bisabolol, ceramide, tea extracts, hyaluronic acid, and squalane.

It’s also important to note that vitamin A derivatives are a “known teratogen” according to Dr. Engelman, so it must be avoided if pregnant or breastfeeding. You can learn more about retinol and vitamin A and how it works here.

How Maelove made good skincare cheap

Maelove CEO and cofounder Jackie Kim wanted to cut prices on grooming products, and cofounders Brad Yim and Rishi Khaitan were looking for ways to apply artificial intelligence techniques to unexpected industries. Skincare – with its glamour and markups – seemed like a natural fit.

As industry outsiders, Kim and company were able to pinpoint the norms that needed challenging. “The first oddity of the skincare industry that we noticed was that it’s run like the fashion industry,” Kim explained. “Marketers create trends and endless product varieties in an attempt to maximize sales. What you end up with is a ton of undifferentiated products hyped by overzealous marketers, which leads to confusion among shoppers.”

The team recruited friends from all disciplines – cancer and brain researchers, chemical engineers, lawyers, and medical doctors – to hone in on the research without the baggage of preconceived notions. In essence, Maelove is one huge – and very successful – science experiment.

First, the team leverages decades of clinical research. “There are abundant and widely accepted published works that show which compounds work well for maintaining skin health. These are the tried-and-true ingredients recommended by every dermatologist and [which] are available in both over-the-counter and prescription strengths (the classic ingredients like retinol, AHA, certain vitamins and peptides, etc).” In short, these are the ingredients that should work.

Then, Maelove uses artificial intelligence to scan millions of self-reported product reviews – what Kim refers to as empirical real-world data – to determine which ingredients correlated with success, and which to avoid. These are the ingredients that, according to users, do work.

Finally, the company finds human volunteers to test the formula to verify that it’s effective. So instead of building a business around variety for the sake of variety, Maelove focuses on making one line of stellar skincare that can work for all skin types.

The bottom line

This radically affordable luxury skincare line is the real deal. Maelove makes some of the best and some of the cheapest skincare products that I’ve found. And while I don’t often get to stick to my own skincare routine as a product reviewer, I’ve surprised myself by preferring to use the cheaper Maelove products over luxury skincare I often test for work because they’re simple, gentle, and effective.

I recommend Maelove to everyone who asks me for recommendations because it works for all skin types and doesn’t cost much, but skincare is also a notoriously subjective experience. What works for me may not work for you – even a skincare line built to cater to every skin type. Luckily, Maelove has a 100-day, 100% money-back guarantee, so you’re not risking much if you want to give it a try yourself.

Generally speaking, most skincare is expensive. There are good options at low prices, but there are also one too many $300 night creams and pots of rare ingredients infused with gold flecks to call the genre accessible all-around.

Practically speaking, good skincare should be much easier to get your hands on. Certain ingredients just work, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to cut through the noise and formulate a product that combines those proven ingredients in a basic bottle that can retail for an affordable price.

That’s what Maelove CEO Jackie Kim thought when she set out to create a “radically affordable” skincare startup – and, in so many words, that’s what the company has achieved with its cult-favorite $28 Glow Maker Vitamin C serum

Kim and co-founders Brad Yim and Rishi Khaitan, MIT graduates, leveraged artificial-intelligence techniques to scan millions of self-reported product reviews to determine which ingredients correlated with success, and which to avoid. The resultant three-years-in-the-making vitamin C serum has been generating enthusiastically positive reviews online, including from me.

The formula

The Glow Maker was designed to smooth, hydrate, and help with hyperpigmentation. It’s packed with ingredients like vitamins C and E for brightening, ferulic acid for antioxidation protection, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and a proprietary mix of botanicals (grape seed extract, aloe, aurantium dulcis, and magnolia) for nourishment and easier makeup application. The addition of extracts also makes the serum better for sensitive skin than most other vitamin C serums.

Consumers have also been quick to note The Glow Maker ($28) has striking similarities to SkinCeuticals’ multi-award-winning C E Ferulic Serum ($166), despite it being more than $130 cheaper.

For reference, we compared the ingredients in the Glow Maker and the SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum:

  • The ingredient list of C E Ferulic according to SkinCeuticals ($166): Aqua/Water/Eau, Ethoxydiglycol, Ascorbic Acid, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Laureth-23, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopherol, Triethanolamine, Ferulic Acid, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate.
  • The ingredient list of Glow Maker according to Maelove ($28): Water (Aqua), Ascorbic Acid, Ethoxydiglycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Lecithin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ferulic Acid, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Callus Culture Extract, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Metabisulfite, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyglycerin, Maltodextrin, Tocopherol.

What it’s like to use

In person, Maelove’s Glow Maker is noteworthy for more than just its origin story. It does what it’s supposed to do (brightens the complexion, lightens dark spots) but its real standout features are that it absorbs completely and almost instantaneously into the skin, and that it provides a glow that’s noticeable but not so over-the-top that people with oily skin should steer clear. There’s no tangible residue, and the skin doesn’t feel sticky or tacky post-use.

And while my skin is sensitive and can be dried out by all-over vitamin C application, I have not had that issue with Maelove’s iteration – something I’d credit to their botanical blend and hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

The bottom line

The Maelove team is an unusual one- comprised of cancer and brain researchers, chemical engineers, lawyers, doctors, and an obsessive skincare enthusiast – but that outsider perspective is its greatest advantage. The startup’s founding goals were affordability and accessibility, and thanks to obsessive research and a streamlined, no-fuss approach to an often stuffy industry, that goal is met with a product line unanimously priced under $30. The Glow Maker is a definite favorite, but other Maelove standouts include the One Cream ($28, currently sold out), Eye Enhancer ($28), and the perfectly gentle but effective Glycolic Acid cream, the Night Renewer ($28)

If you’ve been paying $166 for SkinCeuticals’ C E Ferulic Serum, you owe it to yourself to check out the Glow Maker. If you don’t love it, Maelove offers a 100-day return window for a full refund.

The 9 best lip balms with SPF – because your lips need protection, too

Best lip balms with SPF 4x3
  • We know that wearing sunscreen is crucial, but we often forget to apply it to our lips.
  • A good lip balm with SPF will block harmful UV rays while moisturizing your lips.
  • We consulted two dermatologists and gathered our nine lip sunscreen mainstays.

You’ve probably heard numerous times from your doctor, dermatologist, or favorite beauty YouTuber that wearing sunscreen every single day is a must. And they’re definitely right. But one part of your body that can sometimes get overlooked when it comes to SPF is your lips, which need protection just as much as the rest of your body.

A great way to deliver SPF to your lips on a daily basis is with SPF. But not all of these tubes are created equal. So we turned to Dr. Elizabeth K. Hale, a board-certified dermatologist and senior vice president of The Skin Cancer Foundation, and Dr. Marie Hayag, board-certified dermatologist and founder of 5th Avenue Aesthetics who advised us on working lip balms with SPF into our daily routines. You can read on to learn more from our experts and hear about our team’s nine tried-and-true lip balms with SPF.

Here are the best lip balms with SPF you can buy:

Vanicream Lip Protectant Sunscreen SPF 30

skincare for runners_Lip balm Vanicream Lip Protectant

Lip Protectant/Sunscreen SPF 30 (small)

I’ve tried a few lip balms with SPF, but this one from Vanicream is my preferred pick. On top of a simple formula, the consistency is nice and creamy. It also lacks any sort of strong sunscreen smell or taste, which is a dealbreaker for me. However, without a mirror at hand, it’s hard to know if you’ve rubbed in all of the white cream and sometimes it takes a bit of lip-smacking to reduce the tint. Katie Decker-Jacoby, style & beauty reviews fellow

This lip balm contains both titanium oxide and zinc oxide for effective protection against damaging UV radiation. Additionally, it is water-resistant, free of fragrances, flavoring, and dyes, making it a great option for people with sensitive skin. Dr. Marie Hayag, board-certified dermatologist and founder of 5th Avenue Aesthetics

Aquaphor Lip Protectant and Sunscreen Ointment

Best lip balms with SPF_Aquaphor Lip Protectant and Sunscreen Ointment

Lip Protectant and Sunscreen Ointment (small)

I bought this lip sunscreen ointment because I’m never without Aquaphor’s ultra-nourishing Lip Repair. The two products have similar ingredient lists and consistencies. And though I’m not a huge fan of the sunscreen smell and taste, they’re minimal and do not override the efficacy of this balm. The formula specifically caters to those with sensitive skin, and I find this to be true, as well. Katie Decker-Jacoby, style & beauty reviews fellow

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Balm

Best lip balms with SPF_Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Balm

Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Balm (small)

As someone who is sensitive to the sun and prone for my fair skin to burn, I’m especially cautious with the products I’m using. That being said, I use SPF just about everywhere, even in the colder winter months. I absolutely swear by Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Balm. It has SPF 15 and also prevents my lips from being chapped. It applies buttery smooth, as its name suggests, and smells divine. Victoria Giardina, Buying Guides Fellow

Kiehl’s Since 1851 Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 30

Best lip balms with SPF_Kiehl's Since 1851 Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 30

Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 30 (small)

I have a tube of this in the clear/untinted shade in every hiking backpack I own. It’s moisturizing without feeling sticky and goopy, and the balm doesn’t melt — even during multi-hour-long hikes in the sun. The SPF 30 is strong enough to keep my lips from burning, and the clear shade I use most often comes in handy when I need to reapply sunscreen on the bridge of my nose or the tops of my ears. The metal tube feels more substantial and luxurious than other balms, and the cap screws onto the tube so there’s no chance you’ll lose it at the bottom of your bag. It does, however, contain octocrylene so it’s not reef-safe and I don’t use this when I’m around the beach. Jada Wong, senior editor

Supergoop! PLAY Lip Balm SPF 30 with Acai

Best lip balms with SPF_Supergoop! PLAY Lip Balm SPF 30 with Acai

PLAY Lip Balm SPF 30 with Acai (small)

The tube and formula remind me of old-school Vaseline, but much more protective and way less goopy. The SPF 30 is great for protecting my lips and the formula includes shea butter for lots of moisture. It doesn’t contain any oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene that would be harmful to coral reefs, so I always use this when I’m around the beach. Jada Wong, senior editor

Coola Classic Liplux Organic Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30

Best lip balms with SPF_Coola Classic Liplux Organic Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30

Classic Liplux Organic Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30 (small)

If you’re looking for a quality plant-based sunscreen lip balm, this one from Coola offers broad-spectrum protection, instant moisture, vitamins, and antioxidants. Plus, it’s water-resistant for 80 minutes and should be reapplied every two hours. Dr. Hayag says, “This is a good balm that provides broad-spectrum protection against UV rays while also providing hydration to the lips through ingredients like jojoba and avocado oil.”

Colorescience Lip Shine SPF 35

Best lip balms with SPF_Colorescience Lip Shine SPF 35

Lip Shine SPF 35 (small)

For days where you want more color and luster, this lip gloss checks off those boxes — plus, it has broad-spectrum SPF 35 sun protection. You can reapply every two hours, but every 40 minutes if you’re swimming or sweating a lot. According to Dr. Hayag, “This is a great gloss that contains zinc oxide and Vitamin E to aid in photoprotection. It also contains hyaluronic acid, helping the lips stay well moisturized. Additionally, it has peptides that give the lips a more plump appearance.” The shade selection includes rose, pink, champagne, coral, and clear.

CoTZ Lip Balm Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45

Best lip balms with SPF_CoTZ Lip Balm Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45

Lip Balm Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45 (small)

With a zesty kiwi-lime-ginger tang, this product is ever so slightly tinted to avoid that white cast other sunscreens oftentimes leave behind. It’s also cruelty-free, reef-friendly, and free of chemical sunscreens, oil, lanolin, and gluten. Dr. Hayag says, “This contains zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide to cover UVA/UVB rays and blue light. It is moisturizing, yet water-resistant and has antioxidant protection.”

MDSolarSciences Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30

Best lip balms with SPF_MDSolarSciences Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30

Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30 (small)

This tinted lip balm has a gentle, cruelty-free, and reef-safe formula that does all of that, but of course fends off ultraviolet rays, too. The broad-spectrum SPF 30 sheer tinted balm comes in red, pink, and nude. According to Dr. Hayag, “It also has multiple ingredients in it to help keep your lips moisturized, like avocado oil and olive butter. The balm also contains shea butter, which is rich in antioxidants and soothes and softens the lips.”

FAQs

Best lip balms with SPF 4x3

What is SPF and what SPF should I wear on my lips?

SPF stands for sun protection factor, which is the measure of how well a certain formula will protect you from the sun’s rays. “For example, if you use an SPF 30 product properly, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you used no sunscreen,” Dr. Hale explains. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends SPF 15 for daily wear and SPF 30 for prolonged outdoor activity.

What’s the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

There’s ultraviolet A (UVA), which is connected with skin aging, and ultraviolet B (UVB), which is linked to burning. Instead of worrying about whether your lip balm protects against UVA or UVB rays, Dr. Hale says to pick broad-spectrum sunscreen products, as they shield your skin from both rays.

What can sun damage do to your lips?

The skin on your lips is thinner and missing a layer that the rest of your body uses for UV protection, so it’s more susceptible to burning. Too much sun exposure without any protective lip balm can lead to dryness and flakiness, and even skin cancer. Dr. Hale says, “About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun.”

Are there certain ingredients I should look out for?

According to Dr. Hale, there are two groups of UV-blocking ingredients: physical and chemical. The former are ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, while the latter includes components like avobenzone and octisalate. “Look for products with antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin C,” Dr. Hayag says. “They neutralize and boost protection from free radicals produced by UV radiation and visible light.”

As for ingredients to avoid, Dr. Hayag explains that products with menthol — the thing that gives cough drops and pain relief creams its cooling effect — can irritate the lips. You should also stay away from phenol and fragrance for the same reason.

When should I wear it and how often should I apply?

Our experts urge you to wear lip balm with SPF both outdoors and indoors, as the sun can penetrate through glass windows. And they suggest reapplying every two hours, but more frequently if you’re eating, drinking, or swimming.

What should I do if my lips get sunburnt?

Dr. Hale recommends the following steps: move into a shady spot, stay hydrated, take Advil or Motrin to reduce inflammation, and apply a water-based, moisturizing lip product. For the very last step, she advises steering clear of petroleum and oil-based balms that could possibly aggravate the burn.

Best moisturizers for dry skin 4x3
  • Whether your dry skin is seasonal or not, treating it can often seem impossible.
  • We consulted two dermatologists and our team to learn about dry skin and which products to buy.
  • If you have a different skin type or are unsure, see the best moisturizers for every skin type.

Tight, red, itchy, rough – these are all descriptors of dry skin. And while dry skin on its own is tough, peeling or flaking can also appear, especially during the transition from the summer season to fall and winter, no matter your skin type.

If you notice your skin experiencing dryness, you likely also notice that not all facial moisturizers can get the job done in curing it. The most important things to keep in mind when buying a moisturizer are the ingredients and consistencies of the lotion itself. We spoke with Dr. Kavita Mariwalla, board-certified dermatologist of Mariwalla Dermatology, and Dr. Corey L. Hartman, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology, to break down these details, and help guide us toward the best moisturizer for dry skin.

FAQs

Which ingredients should you look out for when buying moisturizer for dry skin?

To start, it’s helpful to know the three categories of moisturizing ingredients: occlusive, emollient, and humectant. An occlusive forms a barrier to retain moisture, an emollient traps water, and a humectant brings water to the top layer of the skin. Dr. Mariwalla and Dr. Hartman recommend ingredients that fall under these groups, including ones like ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, squalene, petrolatum, shea butter, and lactic acid.

On the flip side, there are of course ingredients that could further irritate your dry skin, such as fragrance, retinoids, glycolic acid, alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and salicylic acid, according to both dermatologists.

What are the differences between creams, lotions, and gels?

The key differences are their ratios between water and oil. According to Dr. Hartman, creams are composed of half water and half oil, lotions contain mostly water and less oil, and gels are water-based and lack any trace of oil. This matters because, according to Dr. Mariwalla, thicker creams typically deliver more moisture than thinner lotions and watery gels. For example, extra dry skin might require a heavy cream, while dry, acne-prone skin might benefit from a lightweight, oil-free gel.

Is there anything else I can do for my skin before applying my moisturizer?

Face moisturizers alone likely won’t relieve your dry skin. Dr. Hartman recommends washing your face with a cream or oil-based cleanser and staying away from foamy ones. For good measure, Dr. Hartman adds, “Avoid hot water, use less soap or cleanser, and wash for shorter periods of time. Moisturizer works to strengthen the skin barrier and to trap in water, so apply the moisturizer immediately after washing.” After applying moisturizer in the morning, Dr. Mariwalla advises layering on sunscreen to block harmful UV rays, which is a step all skin types should take.

Rest assured, if you consistently experience dry skin, seeing your dermatologist is a good idea. Your dermatologist can help uncover the reason for your dry skin and if you perhaps need stronger prescription treatments.

The 5 best body moisturizers our team has tested

  • It’s typical to prioritize facial moisturizers, but body creams are just as important.
  • A good body moisturizer will replenish, soothe, and protect your skin without being too sticky.
  • The Kiehl’s Crème de Corps is our favorite  – a rich cream that will instantly give you soft skin.

Many of us neglect our skin from the neck down but moisturizing our limbs is equally as important  – especially when you get out of the shower. As your skin dries, the water evaporates off the top layer, which can sap moisture from your epidermis. Smoothing on moisturizer keeps your skin feeling soft and hydrated instead of tight and itchy. This is doubly true for folks with skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis. Proper hydration can help you avoid painful flare-ups, making a body moisturizer a must-have in your beauty arsenal.

There are all sorts of body moisturizers out there – from balms to creams to lotions – and the one you choose depends on your skin type and preference. To save you time and effort finding the right one for you, we’ve rounded up the best ones, some with self-tanning properties and others boasting antioxidants for skin-boosting benefits. If you have a specific skin condition, however, it’s a good idea to check in with your dermatologist before starting any new project regimen, just to make there won’t be any adverse effects.

Here are the best body moisturizers in 2021:

The best body moisturizer overall

Kiehl's Crème de Corps

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps is our top body moisturizer overall because it gives you soft, smooth, and healthy-looking skin with immediate results.

Pros: Good for normal, dry, or sensitive skin; no added synthetic fragrance

Cons: Some may find it a bit greasy

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps is a lifesaver that targets dryness, dullness, and uneven skin texture, giving you brighter-looking skin. It nourishes, locks in moisture for hydration, and leaves your limbs feeling soft and smooth.

The rich body lotion is packed with a powerful blend of ingredients, including antioxidant-packed beta-carotene, skin-softening cocoa butter, and moisture-replenishing olive-derived squalane. The beta-carotene is also what gives the lotion its slightly orange tint.

In testing, I found Kiehl’s Crème de Corps had a whipped butter-like texture and a pleasant, subtle fragrance that stems from the ingredients. The body lotion absorbed quickly leaving it looking instantly smoother. However, despite claiming to be non-greasy, it did feel a little greasy on my skin, possibly due to the cocoa butter and oils like olive and avocado.

The best drugstore body moisturizer

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is an award-winning drugstore moisturizer that hydrates without leaving behind a greasy feeling — and without the big price tag too.

Pros: Affordable, fragrance-free, non-greasy, non-comedogenic, soothing oatmeal is good for eczema and itchy skin, great for all skin types including sensitive, oily, and dry skin

Cons: Left behind some residue on skin

Designed to absorb quickly and last 24 hours, this body moisturizer’s gentle formula promises to leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and healthy-looking

Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion works wonders for dry skin and is ideal for daily use. It contains natural ingredients like oatmeal to relieve dry, itchy skin, while emollients soften dry areas.

In testing, Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion was the perfect consistency — not too thick or too thin. It didn’t irritate my sensitive skin and made it look smooth, though it left a slight residue. I appreciate its pump dispenser (for extra convenience), and the fact its fragrance is subtle.

The best body moisturizer to splurge on

Sol de Janeiro Mini Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

The Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream has a velvety consistency that doesn’t leave a residue — and it smells like a tropical island.

Pros: Fast-absorbing, hydrating, delicious smell, antioxidant-packed ingredients, cruelty-free, paraben-free

Cons: The scent can be a little strong, especially if you use a lot of product

Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream product smell like coconut trees and sandy beaches. Its consistency is super smooth and glides seamlessly over the skin. It’s especially great for dry areas and, though I focus the product on my upper thighs during the summertime, it’s still a go-to in colder months when I hop out of the shower.

It’s also fast-absorbing. In fact, your skin will feel instantly hydrated the second you swipe it on. Though the scent may be too strong for some, I only noticed an extra potent scent if I apply more product than average.

At $45, this body butter is a bit of a splurge. But if you want to cut costs a bit, the brand has a mini version for $20. — Victoria Giardina, buying guides fellow

The best with antioxidants

Necessaire 1

For instant hydration and long-term protection, Nécessaire Body Lotion is well, necessary.

Pros: Formulated with vitamins A, C, and E; fast-absorbing, paraben-free

Cons: May be greasy if much product is used

Necessaire’s Body Lotion is a top-tier product for including popular skin-care ingredients in its body-care products. This ensures the skin on your arms and legs is just as hydrated, healthy, and nourished as the skin on your face.

This minimalist tube is packed with vitamins A, C, and E, and omega fatty acids 3, 6, and 9 for an added, antioxidant-filled boost. There’s even niacinamide — an ingredient more commonly found in serums — to help soothe irritated skin and smooth out fine lines. The formula still manages to absorb quickly and doesn’t leave much greasy residue, though that depends on how much you pile on.

The best for self-tanning

Jergens Natural Glow

For hydrated, firmer skin, and a natural-looking glow, Jergens Natural Glow +Firming Daily Moisturizer is our top pick.

Pros: Affordable, gradual and natural color, bearable smell for a self-tanner

Cons: Only comes in two shades

Not only does Jergens Natural Glow +Firming Daily Moisturizer target dry skin, but it also provides a gentle-looking tan and helps reduce the appearance of cellulite in seven days.

This multipurpose moisturizer is formulated with vitamin E, collagen, elastin, and ginseng to help hydrate, firm, tighten, and improve the elasticity of your skin. What’s more, its color-enhancing complex subtly yet gradually deepens your skin tone, so you don’t need to worry about looking like an Oompa Loompa.

It comes in two shades (fair to medium and medium to dark) and leaves behind uniform color with a streak-free finish. For best results, exfoliate first before applying all over your body, but do so sparingly on knees, elbows, and ankles. Wait a few minutes for the lotion to dry before dressing and be sure to wash your hands — unless you want them to be extra tan.

This is my go-to body moisturizer for parties, weddings, or whenever I want to take my fair skin a hue tanner. It does the job and always results in a smooth finish in less than a day.  And, unlike many self-tanning products, the smell is bearable thanks to odor-reducing technology.

The 6 best women’s razors we’ve tested

Billie
  • A good razor will smoothly and effectively remove unwanted hair without irritation.
  • We asked our Insider Reviews team for their go-to shavers to compile a master list of our top picks.

Shaving is a totally personal choice – one that not everyone decides to participate in. But if you’re someone who prefers to remove their body hair, there are several ways to achieve smooth legs, hair-free underarms, and a groomed bikini line. But the fastest, easiest, and least painful is generally shaving. That’s why we gathered up our top picks for women’s razors based on research and testing.

Whether you prefer a subscription-based razor so you’ll always have one on hand or need a specially-designed trimmer for sensitive areas, these are the ones that do the best job. They remove hair and stubble without irritation (also known as that dreaded razor burn), making shaving a self-care process rather than a chore.

For the full experience, you may also want to grab some great shaving cream and a good moisturizer once you’ve settled on the right razor for your needs.

Here are our top picks for the best women’s razors:

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Billie Razor Starter Kit

Billie

If you’re always out of fresh razors, subscription-based startup Billie has high-quality razors at a budget-friendly price.

Billie’s Razor Starter Kit is all about convenience, with the brand delivering a high-quality razor straight to your door as often as you need. With an easy-to-grip handle, flexible head, and more space between the blades than other razors, it makes shaving simple and ergonomic. The pastel and punchy hues coupled with a sleek design also can be a decor piece for a shower shelf, too. The razor also comes with a magnetic mount that sticks to your shower wall, so you never have to go hunting for your razor.

The downside of the subscription model is that you can’t purchase one at the drugstore in case of an emergency, so you’ll be left using another brand-new-to-you razor you may not like.

But that doesn’t mean you should discount this service. Insider Reviews strategic partnerships manager Elisabeth Chambry is a fan, saying that it immediately stood out to her because of the design, price, and effectiveness. “It consistently produces the smoothest shave I’ve ever experienced.” You can read our full review on the Billie Razor here.

Gilette Venus Extra Smooth

gillette venus extra smooth

The Gillette Venus Extra Smooth has five blades for a super-close shave, but the “moisture ribbon” can protect your skin from nicks, cuts, and razor burn.

The Gillette Venus Extra Smooth Women’s Razor provides a super-close shave, thanks to the razor’s pivoting head that glide over knees, ankles, and contours of underarms.  Irritation isn’t a concern, thanks to its “moisture ribbon” — an extra slip to help prevent shaving mishaps and irritations. That said, the strim is thin, so it’s best to use shaving cream to prevent cuts.

Depending on how often you shave and the sensitivity of your skin, the disposable blades can last anywhere from three to 10 uses. The handle initially comes with two blade cartridges, but after that, you’ll need to buy more. The Venus Extra Smooth‘s handle fits comfortably in your hand, making it easier to reach those tricky spots on the backs of the ankles or under your arms.

I’ve been using this razor for years and always buy the product in bulk every time I go to Costco. They last long, work well with my sensitive skin, and never leave a trace of stubble. Victoria Giardina, Buying Guides Fellow

Schick Intuition Sensitive Care Razor

Schick Intuition

With the Schick Intuition Sensitive Care razor, there’s no need for a separate can of shaving gel because it’s built right into the razor cartridge.

When we tested the Schick Intuition Sensitive Care razor, it stood out for never nicking or irritating the legs. Despite refill cartridges tending to add up in price, it’s well worth the buy. The razor gives a reasonably close shave, thanks to its built-in shaving gel, the perfect time-saver that self-lathers for you.

The razor cartridge has four blades surrounded by a water-activated, soap-like shaving “gel.” It provides enough slip for a comfortable, close shave, but on the downside, the gel wears away within just a few uses, so you must replace the cartridge while the blades are still usable or use a separate shaving gel until the blades become dull enough to swap for a new cartridge.

Intuition Sensitive Care Razor for Women with Natural Aloe (small)
Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle

Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle

The two-in-one Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle has a five-blade razor on one side and a battery-powered bikini trimmer on the other.

Ideal for bikini lines, the battery-powered trimmer on the Schick Hydro Silk TrimStyle makes cleaning up your bikini line a breeze. We tested this razor in the shower on the bikini area for many months and never experienced a nick or cut — even without shaving cream.

The trimmer blade comes with a comb covering that’s adjustable to four different lengths. You can also remove it entirely for a closely-cropped trim. This isn’t the razor for you if you’re looking for an ultra-close shave. But for fast, irritation-free trimming and shaping, it’s an effective tool.

The gentle AAA-battery-powered vibration delicately and easily removes hair with one pass of the shaver. On the opposite side of the trimmer, you’ll find a traditional five-blade razor surrounded by a water-based hydrating serum that you can use on your legs, underarms, and even sensitive areas.  This two-in-one trimmer proves you don’t need a separate razor to remove unwanted hair.

Hydro Silk TrimStyle (small)
Gillette Venus Snap

gillette venus snap

Despite its miniature size, the Gillette Venus Snap does just as good a job of removing hair as its full-size relatives.

The Gillette Venus Snap is small enough for travel, yet mighty enough to achieve smooth, bare skin. We’ve used the Venus Snap while traveling and really appreciated not only the carry-on-friendly size but also the convenient plastic carrying case. This razor is also refillable, so you can replace a dulled cartridge with the Venus Extra Smooth refills.

The razor’s head is a regular-sized Venus Extra Smooth blade, so you’ll get a super-close, long-lasting, and comfortable shave on your legs, underarms, and — if you’re careful — your bikini line as well.

It’s the diminutive handle that makes this razor so special. It’s miniature and well-designed for an easy grip, so you’ll have as much control as a full-size razor.

Schick Silk Touch Up

Schick Hydro Silk Touch Up eyebrow Razor

Kiss peach fuzz, stray chin sprouts, and rogue eyebrow hairs goodbye with the Schick Silk Touch Up.

These teeny Schick Silk Touch Up razors are a godsend for those of us blessed with more peach fuzz than we really want. They’re also great for removing any hair on the chin, upper lip, and even patches of dry skin around the chin, nose, or mouth. Insider Reviews editor Maria Del Russo loves to use her Touch Ups around her eyebrows. She credits the angled blade with making it easy to maneuver around your arches without worrying about knicking off the wrong hair.

The razors have a protective guard that prevents cuts or irritation to the skin. The blade lasts a long time before going dull and the razor comes with a small plastic cover to protect it when not in use. One of the best features about the Schick Silk Touch Up razors is how it leaves the skin: Silky smooth for a polished, near-flawless look, serving as a wonderful base for foundation makeup.

Have you ever reached the end of Amazon page results?

To me, it sounds more like a riddle of what would happen if you were to reach the ends of the earth or beat an unbeatable video game. Does the internet break? Does time cease and then, rapidly, ominously, move backward?

Guessing by Amazon’s sheer selection size, we aren’t going to find out any time soon so put that existential dread to bed. The online behemoth’s plethora of options makes it both the most convenient place to buy things you already love, and one of the tougher places to apply its frequent discounts to new worthwhile buys – like skincare, which can be more expensive than it warrants thanks to beauty industry markups.

Read more: 19 best-selling skincare products that Amazon customers swear by – all under $25

Below, I’ve compiled a list of 23 solid skincare products flying under the radar on Amazon that you may want to check out the next time you need a vitamin C Serum and don’t want to drop $100 or more on one. The following cult-favorites have hundreds – if not thousands – of five-star reviews you can vet yourself before buying, too.

23 under-the-radar skincare products with hundreds of near-perfect Amazon reviews:

Thayers’ witch hazel toner is a cult favorite of the online beauty community, and it’s consistently one of Amazon’s most popular skincare products under $25. Rose water, aloe vera, and a proprietary witch hazel extract work gently and efficiently to cleanse and hydrate skin, tighten pores, and control oil production.

Thayers supposedly creates the only witch hazel products made of non-distilled extract from the witch hazel shrub, meaning they should maintain the highest levels of therapeutic tannins (mild antioxidants that nourish the skin).

This underground beauty community Holy Grail has shown up everywhere from the Sephora beauty blog to Youtube vlogs. I wrote my own love letter to it after receiving a glowing recommendation from a colleague.

It’s been called the ‘world’s most powerful mask’ and with good reason: the 100% natural calcium bentonite clay draws out all the impurities deep in your skin, and, especially if mixed with apple cider vinegar, effectively exfoliates the surface of the skin for a smoother, more even texture.
