  • You can screen record on an Android smartphone with or without sound.

  • If you’re running an older version of Android, you might need to use a third-party app like AZ Screen Recorder – No Root.

In the past, if you wanted to make a screen recording on your Android, you’d need to either download a third-party app or hope that your phone’s manufacturer included one.

Now, however, all new Android phones have a screen recorder built-in. It’s easy to find and use to record nearly any app – there are some exceptions for apps like Netflix, which will just give you a black screen.

How to screen record on an Android phone

1. The Screen Recorder is found in the notification panel, so swipe down from the top of the screen – then swipe again so you can see the Quick Settings.

1. Start the Google Photos app on your phone.

2. Tap “Photos” in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

3. The screen recording should be in the Today section.

You can use Google Photos to edit your screen recording as well – you can trim the start and end of the video to eliminate unwanted bits at either end of the video.

1. Start Google Photos and open the screen recording.

2. Tap the edit icon at the bottom of the screen. It’s in the middle, between the Share and Trash icons.

3. At the bottom of the screen, drag the bar on the left of the video timeline toward the right. This trims away the start of the video. Find the spot you want the video to begin, and then repeat that process for the bar on the right side to shorten the end of the video.

  • Once you enable iPad screen recording in Settings, just tap the record button in Control Center.
  • Your screen recordings will be saved to Photos and can be edited or shared like any other video.

Just like the iPhone, every iPad lets you take a screen recording. This is great if you’re making a video tutorial demonstrating how to use an app, documenting a bug for tech support, or showing your winning move in a game.

To screen record on your iPad, you’ll first need to enable it, and then tap the record button in the Control Center. After that, you can start and stop the video at any time.

Enabling screen recording on your iPad

1. Start the Settings app, and scroll down to tap “Control Center.”

2. Tap “Customize Controls.”

3. You’ll be shown a list of Control Center features. If “Screen Recording” has a green plus sign next to it, tap that plus sign. If it’s got a red minus sign instead, just leave it alone – this means it’s already enabled.

You need to add the Record button to the Control Center before you make recordings.

How to screen record on an iPad

1. When you’re ready to record, open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen.

2. Tap the record button, which is a circle with a dot inside it. You should see the circle change into a three-second countdown, and then turn red to indicate it’s recording. You can use the countdown time to close the Control Center.

After the recording starts, you’ll see a small recording indicator at the top of the screen (and yes, this will also appear in the recording).

record 2
Open the Control Center and quickly start a video recording of the screen by tapping the record button.

If you press and hold the record button, you can also turn on your microphone to narrate the screen recording, or choose an app to automatically send the video to once it’s done.

record 3
A quick tap on the Record button will start the three second countdown, but a long tap gives you extra options, including the ability to record narration at the same time.

3. When you’re ready to stop recording, tap the recording indicator and then tap “Stop.” You can also open the Control Center and tap the record button again.

Finding and editing your iPad screen recordings

When you’re done, your iPad screen recording will appear in your camera roll. To see it, open the Photos app and it should be the most recent item.

You can share the video like any other, or edit it – for example, you might want to trim the start and ending so people don’t see you in the Control Center.

1. Tap the video in the Photos app to open it, and then select “Edit.”

2. At the bottom of the screen in the video timeline, tap the arrow at the leftmost edge and drag it towards the right until you’ve cut out enough footage. As it shrinks, the entire frame will become yellow.

3. Repeat this for the end of the video, dragging the arrow at the left side of the video’s timeline toward the right. You can press play at any time to ensure you like the edit.

record 4
You can drag the start and end of the timeline to trim the video.

4. Tap “Done” and then tap “Save as New Clip,” or just “Save Video” to overwrite the original.

How to record your screen on a Mac computer with the Screenshot Toolbar or QuickTime Player

woman using laptop and cell phone at home working
It’s easy to screen record on any Mac.

  • To screen record on Mac, use the Screenshot Toolbar or QuickTime Player.
  • If you have a new Mac, you can screen record on the Screenshot Toolbar with a keyboard shortcut.
  • QuickTime Player is great for older macOS versions, and screen records just as easily.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Say you want to capture something on your Mac screen – but a screenshot just won’t do it.

That’s when screen recordings come in handy. You can record a video of your Mac’s screen using either the Screenshot Toolbar tool, or the QuickTime Player app, both of which come pre-installed on your Mac.

How to screen record on a Mac using the Screenshot Toolbar

Again, remember that this method is only available if you’re running macOS Mojave or newer. If you’re not sure what version of macOS you have, read our article on how to check your macOS version and install any needed updates.

Once you’re ready to record:

1. Press Command + Shift + 5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot Toolbar.

A toolbar with a number of icons and options will appear at the bottom of the screen. You’re looking for the icons that have the record symbol (a solid circle) over them. One will record a video of your entire screen, and the other will let you select a specific section of the screen to record.

The two options in the middle of this toolbar will let you screen record.

2. Pick which recording type you want – and if you picked “Record Selected Portion,” highlight the part of your screen that you want to film – and then click “Record.” If you want to cancel a screen recording before it begins, press the Esc key.

3. Your screen recording will start immediately, and capture everything on your screen (or in the selected section) and any audio playing. When you’re done, click the stop button in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

By default, your screen recordings will be saved to the desktop as .mov files. You can change this by opening the Screenshot Toolbar and clicking “Options” – see below for more details.

How to screen record on a Mac using QuickTime Player

This is the method you’ll want to use if you’re running an older version of macOS. If you go through these steps while running macOS Mojave or newer, it’ll just lead you back to the Screenshot Toolbar.

1. Open the QuickTime Player app on your Mac. You can find it in your Applications folder, or by searching for it.

2. Click “File” in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

3. Click “New Screen Recording” and wait for a dark gray recording window to appear.

Select the “New Screen Recording” option.

4. Click the red record button, then click anywhere on the screen to start a fullscreen recording, or drag your mouse to record only a specific section.

You can also click the arrow next to the record button to choose whether or not to enable the microphone, and if you’d like your mouse clicks to be highlighted.

QuickTime will give you less options, but still lets you narrate the recording.

5. When you’re finished recording, click the stop button in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Once you stop recording, your new video will open in QuickTime automatically. From here, you can watch, edit, and share it.

2. Tap “Edit.”

3. At the bottom of the screen, tap and drag the arrow at the very start of the video to the right. It will become a yellow frame.
