The perks of an Amazon Prime membership seem so numerous that most of its 100-million-and-counting US subscribers are probably only using a fraction of them. You can use it for groceries with AmazonFresh, take advantage of free two-day shipping on tons of products, and get exclusive deals during Amazon’s annual Prime Day sale.

But, if you want to catch a new film or TV show, one of the best membership perks is definitely Amazon’s streaming service: Prime Video.

Prime Video features thousands of popular shows and movies, including original films like “Coming 2 America” and “Borat 2,” as well as exclusive shows like “The Boys.”

In addition to its large library of on-demand content, Prime Video includes Prime Video Channels. This feature lets you add streaming access to popular networks for an extra monthly fee. The streaming service also offers a selection of live sports, including the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football.”

If you’re looking for a way to get the most out of your Amazon Prime membership, here’s how you can start watching Prime Video today.

What is Prime Video?

Prime Video is an on-demand streaming service that’s included in your Amazon Prime membership. If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can also sign up for Prime Video on its own.

You can watch thousands of titles on Prime Video, including many award-winning movies, original programs, and critically acclaimed original TV series.

The streaming service has roughly 24,000 movies and over 2,100 shows to choose from. You can also rent or buy additional movies and TV episodes not included with your subscription, and add over 100 premium channels with Prime Video Channels.

How much does Prime Video cost?

Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership for $13 a month or $119 a year. If you’re not interested in any of Amazon Prime’s other perks, you can sign up for Prime Video on its own for $9 a month.

Students at US colleges and universities can save 50% off and pay just $6.49 a month for Amazon Prime thanks to Prime Student.

Can I try Prime Video for free?

New members can get a free trial of Amazon Prime – which includes Prime Video – for 30 days. That’s one of the longest free trial periods you can get for any streaming service.

After the trial period you can continue paying the regular rate or cancel your plan. You’ll need to cancel your subscription before the end of the trial in order to avoid paying for your next month.

What devices can I use to watch Prime Video?

You can watch Prime Video on your web browser, iOS and Android devices, and more. Here’s a list of devices compatible with Prime Video:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Internet Explorer
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari
  • Opera
  • Android
  • iOs (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  • Chromecast
  • Roku
  • TiVo
  • Apple TV
  • Sony Smart TV
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • Panasonic Smart TV
  • LG Smart TV
  • Vizio Smart TV
  • Philips Smart TV
  • Sharp Smart TV
  • JVC Smart TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Amazon Fire Tablet
  • Amazon Echo
  • PlayStation consoles (3, 4, and 5)
  • Microsoft Xbox Series (Series X, Series S, One)

How does Prime Video compare to other streaming services?

Prime Video‘s cost falls somewhere in the middle of the pack compared to other popular streaming services, like HBO Max ($15 a month) and Peacock (as low as $5 a month). Its standalone price is essentially the same as a basic Netflix plan ($9 a month), although that Netflix option is limited to standard definition while Prime Video offers up to 4K streaming at no extra cost.

Unlike competitors’ streaming services, Prime Video is the only one you can get as part of an Amazon Prime membership. If you frequently have Amazon items shipped to your home or want free delivery on grocery orders over $50, the addition of Amazon Prime for $4 more a month is a no brainer.

Does Prime Video support 4K and HDR?

Prime Video supports a number of advanced video and audio formats, including high dynamic range (HDR), 4K Ultra HD, and Dolby Atmos.

All HDR titles use the HDR10 and HDR10+ formats. Another HDR format, Dolby Vision, is also supported on a select number of titles.

When it comes to advanced audio, Prime Video supports Dolby Atmos on some shows and movies, but the selection is nowhere near as big as it is on Netflix or Disney Plus. The info page for each title typically reveals whether it supports audio formats like Dolby Atmos.

You should check your devices first to see if your video and audio gear will play Prime Video content in these advanced formats.

What shows and movies are on Prime Video?

Prime Video has a wide range of series and films. This includes a number of exclusive 2021 Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated movies like “Sound of Metal” and “One Night In Miami…,” as well as new releases such as the Amazon original “Coming 2 America.”

The service isn’t short of shows, either, including popular originals like “The Boys” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Prime Video also features children’s shows like “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” based on the book of the same name.

Outside of original content, the streaming service includes a rotating library of hits from the past – like “Gladiator” and “Back to the Future” – along with the option to pay extra for Prime Video “cinema” releases that are still playing in theaters.

The streaming service is also making ground in the sports market. In March, the National Football League announced a 10-year deal that gives Prime Video the exclusive rights to air its “Thursday Night Football” games starting in 2022.

What does Amazon’s purchase of MGM mean for Prime Video?

Amazon struck an $8.45 billion deal to acquire MGM in May 2021. The deal could have a big impact on what Prime Video subscribers get to watch.

MGM is home to a number of popular franchises including Rocky, James Bond, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Real Housewives,” and more. In total, the studio has made over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows, according to a press release.

Many existing MGM titles and new entries in the studio’s franchises could now become a part of Prime Video’s library. But, it’s not as straightforward as all MGM titles leaving other streaming services to head to Amazon.

For instance, WarnerMedia and Turner Broadcasting have a hold on the streaming rights to MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and all movies before 1986. If Amazon wants these films on Prime Video, it would have to make a separate deal.

It’s also unclear when MGM titles will make their way to Prime Video. As one Citigroup analyst told Barron’s, the titles would “likely” move to the streaming service “over time.” There are also other parties that still have input concerning future MGM releases, such as Eon Productions’ creative control over decisions regarding future James Bond shows and films.

Upcoming movies that have already been announced for other streaming services, like “No Time to Die” and “Creed III,” should still make their way to Epix and Paramount Plus first thanks to existing deals.

“Judas and the Black Messiah” premiered on February 12 in theaters and on HBO Max, but its availability on HBO’s streaming service was only temporary. The movie was removed from HBO Max on March 14, but it could be added back at a later date.

The film chronicles the events leading to the joint FBI and police raid that saw more than 80 shots fired into Fred Hampton’s apartment as he slept. “Get Out” and “Queen & Slim” star Daniel Kaluuya plays Hampton in the film, while Lakeith Stanfield plays the FBI informant tasked with spying on Hampton and the Black Panthers.

For many Black activists, Hampton’s killing exemplified violent methods that racists and the government would use to suppress their movement, sowing years of distrust for Chicago police and federal law enforcement.

Years after Hampton’s death, it was revealed that the FBI had identified Hampton as a radical and launched a campaign to undermine his activism. They planted an informant named William O’Neal within the Black Panther Party to track Hampton’s actions and spread misinformation about Hampton to other Black activist groups in Chicago.

“Judas and the Black Messiah” has garnered critical acclaim from reviewers. The movie currently holds a “96% Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85/100 on Metacritic.

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Minari
“Minari” is directed by Lee Isaac Chung

(digital copy) (small)

In February, “Minari” took home the award for best foreign language film at the 2021 Golden Globes. And now, the film has a chance to grab even more honors at the 2021 Academy Awards on April 25. The movie is up for a total of six Oscars.

“Minari” is a drama following a Korean-American family’s move to Arkansas in the 1980s. It touches on many topics related to the “American Dream” and the obstacles that immigrants face in this country. The film features “The Walking Dead” star Steven Yeun, and is inspired by director Lee Isaac Chung’s life growing up in America.

“Minari” is nominated for best picture, best directing (Chung), best actor in a leading role (Yeun), best actress in a supporting role (Youn Yuh-jung), best original screenplay, and best original score at the 2021 Academy Awards.

Critics and audiences are giving the film widespread acclaim, leading to a 98% “Certified Fresh” rating and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Insider critic Jacob Sarkisian gave the film an “A+” rating in his full review and called it “a perfect movie that will move you with every scene.”

If you want to see the film before the Oscars air on April 25, you can watch it now in theaters or through video-on-demand (VOD) streaming services.

How to watch ‘Minari’

“Minari” became available to stream through VOD platforms on February 26. The film also remains in a number of theaters if you’d prefer to see it on the big screen.

The movie is available to rent through Vudu, Prime Video, Redbox, Fandango Now, Google Play, Apple TV, and the Microsoft Store.

All of these options feature a digital rental price of $20, although rental times vary. Typically, most platforms will let you watch a movie during a 30-day period and give you 48 hours to watch it once you start it up. The movie is available in 4K Ultra HD with HDR, high definition (HD), and standard definition (SD) through select services.

You should check with the platform first to confirm its rental period limits and to see if it offers high-quality viewing options. Digital rental services are available on a variety of media devices and smart TVs. You can find more information about how to rent movies online here.

How to watch other Oscar-nominated films

In addition to “Minari,” you can stream several other movies nominated for best picture at the 2021 Academy Awards.

“Sound of Metal” starring Riz Ahmed is available on Prime Video. The streaming service alone costs $9 a month, although it can be paired with Amazon Prime for $13 a month or $119 a year.

Meanwhile, “Promising Young Woman” starring Carey Mulligan is available via a number of video-on-demand platforms, like Vudu and FandangoNow. “The Father” will also be available to purchase through VOD services starting March 26.

Nomadland,” which is up for six Oscars, is streaming right now on Hulu. There are several ways you can watch Hulu, but our recommendation is to take advantage of the $13 a month bundle that includes ESPN+ and Disney Plus. The bundle will also give you access to other Oscar-nominated films, like “Onward” and “Soul” on Disney Plus.

Finally, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Mank” are both available exclusively on Netflix. You can subscribe to Netflix for as low as $9 a month.

Promising Young Woman” is now streaming through a variety of digital services. The thriller is the directorial debut of Emerald Fennell, whose previous writing credits include several episodes of “Killing Eve.”

The film tells the story of Cassandra Thomas (Carey Mulligan), a young woman who seizes the opportunity to take revenge on a group of men responsible for a traumatic event in her past. Fennell’s smart script and direction infuse the thriller with elements of dark comedy. The movie also stars comedian Bo Burnham as Mulligan’s love interest, along with Laverne Cox (“Orange is the New Black”), Clancy Brown (“Highlander”), and Alison Brie (“GLOW”).

The film received five 2021 Oscar nominations, including best picture, best directing (Fennell), best actress in a leading role (Mulligan), best original screenplay, and best film editing. “Promising Young Woman” was also nominated – but lost – in four categories at this year’s Golden Globes. Fennell was among two other female filmmakers nominated for best director. It was the most nominations for female directors in the show’s history.

The movie has received positive reviews from critics, and currently holds a 90% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If you want to see what has critics and audiences talking, you can now watch the film at home.

There are several ways you can watch Hulu, but our recommendation is to take advantage of the $13 per month bundle that includes ESPN+ and Disney Plus. The bundle will also give you access to other Oscar-nominated films, like “Onward” and “Soul” on Disney Plus.
