Myrtle Beach is a popular summer destination for its lovely stretch of coastline known as the Grand Strand and a busy downtown filled with amusements and attractions. Located just north of Charleston, South Carolina, Myrtle Beach draws big summer crowds but shoulder seasons like spring and fall offer cheaper rates and fewer crowds.

It’s a personal favorite of mine after writing about consumer and leisure travel in the area for over 20 years and I highly recommend the local vacation rental market. It’s also an especially popular choice for a more affordable family vacation option.

Rentals like those found on Airbnb are a great way to claim more space to spread out, and often for cheaper than you’ll find in hotels. Here are my top picks for your next getaway.

It’s even possible to eye up the lie of the land before teeing off from the comfort of the condo’s deck. Staying here also comes with access to a community pool for cooling off after a round, and a cute bar in the kitchen to sit with a beer and analyze those putts that could have been.

FAQ: Visiting Myrtle Beach

Where is Myrtle Beach?

Myrtle Beach is a seaside destination in South Carolina, located around two hours or so north of Charleston along a stretch of coast known as The Grand Strand.

In contrast to the somewhat refined Charleston, Myrtle Beach is much more skewed to families and tourists, and is an unpretentious, down-to-earth coastal getaway that gets very busy at peak times, such as summer.

Where should I vacation in Myrtle Beach?

Where you stay in Myrtle Beach depends a lot on your budget and personal tastes. Along the oceanfront, the north end is generally held to be more contemporary, with the south end having older properties.

Ocean Boulevard is the main drag that runs parallel to the beaches with busy spots around Wither Heights and Yaupon Circle. Families will probably want the ease of being close to the action and the sands, while couples or older visitors may want to stay a few blocks back from the seafront, and there are quieter residential areas around the country clubs and golf courses away from the clamor.

There are many units within gated resorts, from brands such as Marriott and Sheraton, and some independent complexes. These places have shared community pools and other leisure facilities, some even having small water parks. The vast majority of the accommodations in Myrtle Beach are close to the beaches.

How much does it cost to rent a vacation house in Myrtle Beach?

If you want to book a private vacation rental in Myrtle Beach, the cost will depend on factors such as house or unit size, proximity to the beach and downtown, added amenities such as a pool, plus the time of year and the day of the week that you plan to visit.

It will also, as noted, depend on whether you’re renting inside a gated resort community or not. Myrtle Beach gets incredibly busy during the summer and over holiday weekends.

For example, a small unit in a resort might start at less than $75 per night off season, but surge to over $300 per night for a summer weekend. A large, lavish beach house could be closer to a thousand dollars or more per night at any time.

For better deals, as well as increased availability, visit in shoulder seasons like spring or fall when the weather is still quite pleasant and there are fewer crowds and less competition for inventory. If you’re set on a summer trip to Myrtle Beach, plan to increase your budget or consider only staying midweek for lower rates.

Expect to pay, at minimum, a few hundred dollars for a short midweek stay off season, or over one thousand dollars for a weekend or summer visit in a higher-end property. B

Also, be aware of cancellation policies and read the fine print, as some homes have strict rules and service fees. You may also want to check other home rental sites before you book to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Finally, as the global pandemic continues, be aware that shared amenities such as pools or gyms may be closed. Be sure to check with the host before booking if accessing such facilities is important to your stay.

Is Airbnb safe?

The CDC now says fully vaccinated people can safely travel in the US.

Additionally, experts say Airbnb is safe, especially compared to hotels, because they eliminate interactions with others. Airbnb hosts must also follow enhanced cleaning guidelines.

Of course, there are still risks and we recommend following CDC guidelines, practicing social distancing, double masking, and washing hands frequently.
