Philips Twin TurboStar Technology XXL Airfryer

In 2010, Philips introduced the first air fryer at a consumer electronics fair in Berlin, Germany. Since then, the appliance has taken off with dozens of brands introducing different styles.

I was hesitant to try the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL for several reasons, including that it regularly costs $350 – it’s one of the most expensive options. It’s currently on sale for $300 at Amazon, so note that prices may fluctuate constantly. But after using it dozens of times over the past six months, I can say unequivocally that it’s the best air fryer on the market.

Below, I will explore what makes it better than the competition.

Specs

The Twin TurboStar XXL lives up to the XXL in its name with a footprint of 12 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and 12 inches tall. It has an impressive temperature range of 175 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and you can adjust the temp in 25-degree increments using the dial on the front.

The dial lets you set the timer (between 1 and 60 minutes) and choose among presets, including defrost, chicken, steak, fish, and cake. The large, LCD screen display shows you the temp and time remaining in the cooking process.

The air fryer comes with a beautiful recipe book complete with full-color photos. There are more than 30 recipes and you can access over 200 more by downloading the app.

Philips backs this air fryer with a one-year limited warranty.

Set-up process

The set-up process was effortless.

After removing the packaging, I washed the basket and pan with soap and water. I then let the air fryer run for a few minutes to warm up. Within 10 minutes of opening the box, I had potstickers baking. They came out pretty good, but I think I’ll stick with the stovetop method. Despite being healthier, they were missing the steamed goodness. However, there were several other plates the air fryer knocked out of the park.

What makes the Philips air fryer stand out

What impresses me most about the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer is that it combines size with fast cooking. The stated capacity of the air fryer is 3 pounds or 4 quarts of food, and in my experience, this is conservative. I had no problem fitting three pounds of chicken breasts in the basket without crowding.

There are three food items I test in all air fryers: toast, french fries, and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. The chicken breasts just needed 25 minutes, and they tasted juicy and delicious.

To test the french fry capabilities, I cut up 2 pounds of yellow potatoes, tossed them with a tablespoon of olive oil and some seasoning, and put them in the air fryer. Every 10 minutes, I’d shake the basket up and see if they were done. The fries took a little less than 30 minutes, which is impressive compared to other models I’ve tested.

The toast was also quite fast by air fryer standards. In less than 4 minutes, the Twin TurboStar XXL evenly toasted a giant slice of my homemade bread, which I’d made in the Zojirushi Home Bakery Virtuoso Plus Breadmaker.

You can also tell how well an air fryer bakes by how much heat it puts off. If the air fryer is emitting a lot of heat around the exterior, then it’s heating your house and not cooking efficiently. The Philips air fryer stays cool to the touch everywhere except the back of the appliance, where it’s incredibly hot.

Philips Twin TurboStar Technology XXL Airfryer

I’ve tested a dozen air fryers in the last year, and the recipe books always underestimate how long the dishes will take to cook. This is not the case with the Philips recipe book. I tried recipes for fries, drumsticks, and fish, and they were all accurate and scrumptious.

I love that the parts of the air fryer that get the dirtiest – like the basket, mesh bottom, “fat reducer” tray, and pan – are dishwasher safe. They were easy to clean in my dishwasher, and I haven’t noticed any wear from using this cleaning method.

Cons to consider

I did have a little issue with the Twin TurboStar XXL releasing a fair amount of smoke while cooking. This likely had to do with me going a little overboard with the amount of olive oil I used for a recipe. After thoroughly cleaning the unit and testing again, the smoke problem went away. So, the moral of the story is to go light on the oil. I recommend picking up an inexpensive oil mister.

Unlike most air fryers, the Philips air fryer doesn’t come with accessories, such as a rack or skewers. The company sells these separately. I didn’t miss having accessories, but if you’re paying $250 for a small appliance, you’d expect it to come with plenty of extras so it seemed like an oversight here.

The bottom line

From being able to cook family-size meals efficiently to cleaning up easily, the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer hits all the right notes. But should you buy it? Are there more affordable and perfectly serviceable alternatives? Let’s explore your options.

Should you buy the Philips air fryer?

Even though it’s the best I’ve tested, $250 is a lot to spend on an air fryer. However, if you have the money and want the best, the Twin TurboStar XXL is the model to buy, especially if you want a unit that can cook larger quantities of food quickly.

Due to its size, it may not be ideal for individuals with smaller kitchens, but it could be a good alternative if you don’t have room for an oven.

Which model should you get?

You can save $100 off the price of the digital XXL by choosing the analog model. The only difference is you don’t get the convenient digital interface. Instead, you set the appliance by manually adjusting the time and temperature dials.

Philips makes a few other air fryer models, including its XL Collection and compact solutions, but we don’t feel they provide as strong of a balance of price and cooking abilities as the XXL air fryers. However, if you really want a Philips air fryer but want to limit your spending, consider the compact Philips Starfish Technology Airfryer, which only costs $120 and has a smaller footprint than the XXL.

What are your alternatives?

If the Philips air fryer doesn’t appeal to you, I’ve found the following to be excellent alternatives:

  • Secura Extra Large Capacity Air Fryer ($84.99): At less than a third of the price of the Twin TurboStar XXL, the Secura air fryer is a workhorse that can hold 4.2-quarts of food. The oven is 1,500 watts and cooks quickly. The controls are basic analog. Still, this is a terrific alternative if you want to see what air frying is all about but aren’t ready to commit to a more expensive unit. You can read my full review here.
  • Chefman 6.3 Quart Digital Air Fryer+ Rotisserie ($90.99): One of the best-tasting and healthiest foods you can make in an air fryer is chicken. And the Chefman Roaster evenly roasts a whole chicken on a rotisserie spit. While this unit has an impressive capacity, digital controls, and a helpful window for tracking the progress of your food, it heats slowly and inefficiently.
  • Tobox Electric 1500W Digital Air Fryer ($149.99): The Tobox air fryer stands out because it has digital controls, preprogrammed settings, and can hold 3.8 quarts of food. Also, thanks to the well-ventilated design of the basket, the hot air flows freely to efficiently air fry your meal. Unfortunately, the vents make the basket hard to clean.

Overall, there are several outstanding alternatives available, but if you have it in your budget, we strongly recommend picking up the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer. You will appreciate how quickly it cooks large meals and how effortless it is to clean up.

Pros: 4-quart capacity, TurboStar design facilitates faster cooking, dishwasher safe, digital interface, full-color recipe book

Cons: Expensive, doesn’t come with accessories, smoking may occur if too much oil is used

Alaska is known for its fresh, sustainably harvested seafood – now you can enjoy it wherever you are through this monthly subscription

  • The Wild Alaskan Company is a wild-caught, sustainable seafood delivery service.
  • Its mission is to make access to sustainable fish easy and convenient.
  • It operates on a monthly membership model, in which you can get 12 pieces of fish for $132/month.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickyWild Combo Box Subscription (small)Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

While other kids grew up playing soccer or riding bikes in their backyard, Arron Kallenberg was raised on his family’s commercial fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska, home to the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world.

After spending 15 years working at internet startups, Kallenberg returned to these fishing roots, incorporating his knowledge of technology to create the subscription-based Wild Alaskan Company.

Its mission is simple: the service delivers wild-caught seafood from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest to everywhere in the US except Hawaii.

Related Article Module: Where to buy the best-tasting, highest-quality seafood online in 2021

And the seafood from these regions of the country isn’t just delicious, it’s also more environmentally friendly than your typical supermarket fish selection. That’s because Alaska mandates directly in its constitution that seafood must be maintained on the sustained yield principle, which prevents the long-term depletion of natural resources.

How it works and what to expect

All year long, the company offers sockeye salmon, coho salmon, Alaskan halibut, and Pacific cod. Depending on availability, it also stocks rockfish, wild Alaska pollock, sablefish, and weathervane scallops.

You can’t get this seafood a la carte. Instead, items are bundled together into various plans: the Wild Salmon Box (6-ounce portions of salmon), Wild White Fish Box (6-ounce portions of white fish), and Wild Combo Box (6-ounce portions of both types).

You have the choice between 12 single portions ($10.99 each) or 24 single portions ($9.99 each), to be delivered every month or two months. The 12-portion plan has an additional $9.95 shipping charge, while shipping is free for the 24-portion plan.

wild alaskan company 2

The fish arrives frozen in a dry ice-packed, insulated cooler, ready to be stashed in your freezer or cooked immediately.

Review of Wild Alaskan Company

I love eating fish but don’t buy it often when I go grocery shopping due to either lack of availability at my local market or confusion about the fish’s background and sourcing.

While I think Wild Alaskan Company could be even more transparent about its suppliers and processors, I liked at least knowing that the service sources from sustainably managed fisheries and was created by people who care about the wellbeing of natural food systems. Senior reporter and resident fisherman Owen Burke also advises using Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch consumer guide and complete recommendation list to look up the safety and sustainability of the specific fish you receive.

All in all, I felt like I could spend more time and energy simply enjoying the fish.

Wild Alaskan Company sent me its Wild Combo Box to test out. The monthly assortments can vary, but at the time, my box contained sockeye salmon, coho salmon, Pacific cod, halibut, and pollock.

The fish isn’t “fresh” in the traditional sense – it isn’t sent to you shortly after being caught. Rather, it’s “fresh-frozen,” (otherwise known as flash-freezing), which means it’s frozen shortly after it’s caught and handled.

This method, used by indigenous Inuit communities, actually helps retain the taste and texture of your fish, plus it lets you enjoy all types of seasonal fish year-round.

By comparison, some of the seafood you see at grocery store counters may be older than you think, and it’s not unlikely that it was previously frozen. Some seafood departments, such as the one at Wegman’s, even throw out their fresh fish after two days.

In the end, eating fish that’s frozen properly is less wasteful, and you don’t have to sacrifice taste and texture. My box of fish tasted great: flavorful, tender, and flaky.

wild alaskan company 4

The monthly membership design is meant to ensure you’ll always have a flaky piece of salmon or halibut ready to cook for dinner. However, if at any point you want to pause, skip, or cancel your membership, you can do so in your account settings.

The bottom line

As we’ve already seen with the online meat boom, there’s a greater urgency to think more consciously and carefully about where your food comes from and its effects on the planet.

Wild Alaskan Company is the direct-to-consumer equivalent in the fish and seafood industry, so whether you already love eating seafood or wish you had more guidance picking out the right types, it’s a service you should consider trying.

We tested Le Creuset’s classic Dutch oven and 6 other pieces – the cast iron cookware is pricey, but here’s why it’s worth the investment

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

le creuset review 6

  • Le Creuset is known for its beautiful, well-crafted, and versatile enamel Dutch ovens.
  • Its cookware is expensive, but Le Creuset’s products last for years (if not generations).
  • We tested seven pieces, including its Dutch oven, oven-ready stoneware, and non-stick cookware.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickyRound Dutch Oven (small)

Though startups like Made In are making headway against traditional kitchen brands, there are some decades-old names that home cooks may never let go of.

Topping registry and gift lists everywhere, these legacy brands have been wished for, raved about, and passed down from generation to generation. For good reason – their products help to make your grandmother’s famous chocolate chip cookies as well as your newfangled (her words, not yours) quinoa cacao bites.

French cookware company Le Creuset is one such name, representing the height of craftsmanship and style, and accordingly, price. Its enamel cast iron Dutch ovens are widely considered the best in the industry, which is why many people are willing to commit to the $200+ investment and few ever regret it.

You can’t miss them in a kitchen. They’re the smooth and glossy, weighty and substantial, brightly colored centerpiece of a shelf, stove, or countertop, and after cooking with them, you’re unlikely to ever forget them.

Basically, Le Creuset is the rare brand that’s really as good as everyone says it is. The experience is kind of like going to your first SoulCycle class – you enter a cynic, but you emerge (hopefully less sweaty) a zealous convert.

A brief history of Le Creuset – then and now

le creuset review 9

Le Creuset was created in 1925 by two Belgian industrialists, one who specialized in casting and the other in enameling. After meeting at the Brussels Fair, they created a foundry in Fresnoy-le-Grand, an area in northern France located along a major trade route.

The cast iron cocotte, also known as a French oven or an enameled Dutch oven, was their first product. Its Flame color, a Le Creuset signature, is said to have been modeled after the vibrant orange hue of molten cast iron inside a crucible (“le creuset” in French).

The cocotte was a groundbreaking product at the time because it made the kitchen staple of cast iron cookware both more functional and beautiful. It was something that home cooks could rely on every time to perform at high levels, but also an aesthetically pleasing piece that looked good on stovetops and dining tables alike. Based on Le Creuset’s enduring success, it looks like our tastes haven’t changed much.

After World War II, as competitors flocked to steel and aluminum to make their cookware, Le Creuset doubled down on its enameled cast iron efforts, expanding into a range of other pieces and experimenting with exciting new colors. Today, you can shop its iconic Dutch oven alongside specialty cookware like woks and Moroccan tagines, bakeware like casserole dishes, and dinnerware.

How to shop Le Creuset cookware and what to buy

Le Crueset

Enameled cast iron was and will remain Le Creuset’s specialty. Its slow heat distribution and strong heat retention make it great for medium and low-heat cooking, from slow-cooking meats to roasting vegetables to baking rich desserts. The smooth interior encourages beautiful, delicious caramelization, plus it prevents sticking and is easy to clean. This material is safe to use on all heat sources, including electric, gas, induction, outdoor grill, and oven. Whether you’re a first-time Le Creuset buyer or expanding a decades-old collection, this versatile, high-performing cookware is the main one to shop. All cast iron pieces are made in the original French foundry and each is hand-inspected by 15 people. They come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Stoneware is best for baking tasks. It heats uniformly to create that coveted golden-brown crust while making sure that everything inside is cooked evenly, and it releases food easily. All stoneware pieces come with a limited 10-year warranty.

Nonstick is a newer venture for Le Creuset and a nicer-quality upgrade from the nonstick stuff you’ve used before. Compared to cast iron, these aluminum-core products heat up quickly. All nonstick pieces come with a limited lifetime warranty.

le creuset review 8

Where to shop Le Creuset

Le Creuset’s full lineup of products is available on its website, where you can get free shipping on all orders, find recipes and events, and start a gift registry (through MyRegistry.com). It’s easiest to shop all of Le Creuset’s gorgeous colors and special limited-stock or limited-edition collections on the company’s website.

However, you can also find sales and exclusive colors at specialty retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table (the “Artichoke” shade looks as delicious as the real thing), and Crate & Barrel, and department stores like Nordstrom and Macy’s. It’s available at Amazon as well, but it might be more convenient to buy Le Creuset at those places if you shop there frequently.

Review of Le Creuset cookware

Three of us tested the cookware types I mentioned above – enameled cast iron, stoneware, and nonstick – and put the nearly 100-year-old company to the work. While this was my first experience cooking with Le Creuset, some of my colleagues have been using their pieces for years and can attest to the durability and wear of their cookware.

Below, learn more about what it’s like to cook with Le Creuset, from the classic Dutch Oven to the lesser-known Grill Pan.

Round Dutch Oven

le creuset review 4
Ellen’s beef stroganoff

Round Dutch Oven (5.5-Quart), around $370, available at: Le Creuset | Williams-Sonoma

We used it to cook: beef stroganoff, broccoli and sausage orzo skillet, chicken pot hotdish, and so much more.

Why we love it: The 5.5-quart version of the popular Le Creuset Dutch oven isn’t cheap at $350, but it’s the cornerstone of my kitchen; it offers a lot of versatility, a durable design, and crucially, even heat distribution. I use it to cook easy, one-pot meals on most weeknights — everything from beef stroganoff to spring peas and asparagus risotto to a broccoli and sausage orzo skillet. —Ellen Hoffman, Executive Editor

I use a 4.5-quart version of this Dutch Oven, the same one that had previously belonged to my former boss’ wife. She and I would swap recipes through her husband, delivering muffins and breakfast bars and favorite recipes to each other via his briefcase. At a holiday party at their home a few years ago, she gifted me one of her Le Creuset pots along with her matching frying pan. She gave it to me because she was growing partial to her Staub Dutch oven and didn’t need so many in the house, but it was still one of the kindest gifts I’ve ever received. I love cooking in it and especially using it to serve stews, sauces, and orzo during dinner parties. —Sally Kaplan, Senior Editor

Signature Lite Grill Pan

le creuset review
Sally’s grilled zucchini

Signature Lite Grill Pan, $180: currently unavailable

We used it to cook: grilled summer squash phyllo pie, Beyond Meat sausages

Why we love it: When I’m too lazy to fire up the grill on our rooftop (so, most of the time), I opt for this stovetop grill pan. It gives my veggies and meat substitutes the perfect grill marks, and it’s easy to move around on the burner if there’s a hot or cool spot (which happens with square-shaped pans). When I grill things like summer squash on it, and there’s something so satisfying about turning it over to see those little charred and caramelized bits. The surface is relatively non-stick, so food comes up cleanly as you’re flipping it, and the pan wipes down easily.  —Sally Kaplan

Mini Cocottes

le creuset review 5
Connie’s mini mac and cheese and veggies

Mini Cocottes, $100, available at: Le Creuset

We used it to cook: single-serving/app-sized mac and cheese, veggies, baked eggs, apple pie

Why we love it: These are hands down the most adorable pieces of cookware I own. The mini versions of the brand’s classic cocotte are perfect for serving personal desserts, side dishes, and snacks like nuts or candy. They’re made from stoneware, so they’re best used in the oven on a baking tray and uncovered. The set I got came with a cookbook filled with recipes optimized for tiny portions, but if you’re comfortable with experimentation, I can see the potential to get really creative (and cute) with these mini cocottes. —Connie Chen, Senior Reporter

Square Dish

Le Creuset stoneware
Sally’s fudgy vegan brownies

Square Dish, $50, available at: Le Creuset |Bed Bath & Beyond (currently sold out)

We used it to cook: fudgy vegan brownies, roasted apricots with coconut sugar, cornbread, and a million other things

Why we love it: I’ve had this square dish for about three years now, and it’s one of the most-used dishes in my kitchen. I bake quick-breads and brownies in it, use it to roast veggies at high temperatures, and even make pot pies with fluffy, crispy drop biscuit crust. The coating on the stoneware is so glossy and smooth that it’s always easy to clean — mine has been through hell and back, and still looks as new as it did the very first day I got it. —Sally Kaplan

Nonstick Saute Pan

le creuset review 2
Sally’s vegetarian “meat” sauce

Nonstick Saute Pan, $145, available at: Crate & Barrel | Le Creuset

We used it to cook: vegetarian “meat” sauce, garlicky zucchini noodles

Why we love it: I have a lot of nonstick pans, but I threw two of them out after I cooked with this one for the first time. The nonstick coating is above and beyond what I’ve experienced before. It took about three seconds to wash the pot I cooked this sauce in because there was absolutely nothing sticking to it. Not only that, but it provided fast, even heat throughout, and the walls of the pan are just high enough that you can use it as a saucepan and saute pan interchangeably. It’s an excellent value for $145 — I use it all the time. —Sally Kaplan

Braiser

le creuset review 3
Ellen’s “sophisticated hamburger helper”

Braiser, $200, available at: Le Creuset

We used it to cook: lemon thyme chicken thighs, rigatoni and chicken with vodka sauce (family recipe), and lots of other bigger, saucy pasta dishes

Why we love it: This pan is the perfect size for the kinds of one-pot, saucy pasta dishes I make all the time. It’s super wide and deep enough that I don’t have to worry about adding too much liquid and having the contents spill over the sides. It’s also great for cooking meats and veggies since, like I said, there’s plenty of surface area so everything has room to get nice and crispy.—Ellen Hoffman

Rectangular Casserole

le creuset review 11

Rectangular Casserole, $115, available at: Amazon | Le Creuset

We used it to cook: Enchiladas, lasagna, pasta casseroles

Why we love it: The depth of this 3.5-quart casserole dish is ideal for recipes that call for layering, and the stoneware construction ensures every layer, whether sweet or savory, heats evenly and comes out of the oven piping hot. Though you might think the enamel would be too delicate to touch with a knife, rest assured you can slice into your casserole worry-free. I do wish the handles were slotted so I’d feel safer carrying it out of the oven, so just be extra careful about not dropping your hard work on the ground. —Connie Chen

  • Your tableware should be beautiful and durable enough for both everyday use and special occasions.
  • A new group of dinnerware startups have made setting your table easier and more affordable than ever.
  • Some of our favorite places to shop for dinnerware include Food52 Shop, Year & Day, and East Fork Pottery.

Like many things in the world of home goods (see: sheets, cookware, mattresses), tableware can be overwhelming to shop for. Nowadays, you might even question if you actually need full dinnerware and flatware sets. They’re often overpriced, and besides, who even throws formal dinner parties anymore?

Related Article Module: The best flatware and silverware in 2021

But maybe your attitude on tableware all depends on where you shop and how you plan to use it. If you think about tableware in terms of the plates, serving bowls, and utensils you use every day – whether you’re preparing a four-course meal for friends and family or making boxed mac and cheese for one – why not make every dining experience more exciting and enjoyable?

Once you let go of the idea that dinnerware is only for wedding registries or that it has to match all the other pieces in your cabinet, you can have fun with it. We found eight online stores that don’t abide by the usual tableware “rules.”

Here’s where to shop for tableware online, plus all the info you need to know about their materials and construction, shipping and return policies, and more.

Year & Day

Shop tableware at Year & Day here

Product range: Dinnerware, servingware, flatware, drinkware

Background: Like most people in the midst of a move, founder Kathryn Duryea (formerly of Rocksbox and Tiffany & Co.), was initially excited to buy home essentials for her new place. But again and again, she found herself disappointed by the boring, expensive, and low-quality tableware options out there, so she started taking glaze-making classes and doing the research to bring her own vision to life.

She found her match in a ceramics factory in Portugal. Launched officially in 2017, Year & Day took off online with its made-for-the-camera color palettes — which include dreamy names like Moon and Daybreak — and classic silhouettes. The pieces cost $11-$13 each and sell out often, thanks to their versatility, durability, and weighty feel. Not to mention, they’re easy to mix and match. You can also use the site’s helpful quiz if you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for.

Materials and construction: Year & Day sources local clay from Portugal and uses recycled clay scraps in order to conserve resources. Its specific clay firing process results in a vitrified surface, which means it’s strong and resistant to water and breakage, and all ceramic pieces are dipped in semi-matte glaze. They’re safe for the dishwasher, microwave, and freezer, and oven-safe up to 480°F.

The flatware is also made in Portugal, with 18/10 stainless steel and forged blades on the knives, while the drinking glasses are crafted in Italy with breakage-resistant stems and chemical-free glass. These pieces are dishwasher-safe as well.

Other things to know about Year & Day:

  • Free shipping on orders over $150
  • 30-day return policy
  • Can be added to a universal wedding registry such as Zola

Snowe

Shop tableware at Snowe here

Product range: Dinnerware, servingware, flatware, drinkware, barware, and bed and bath products

Background: As a couple moving in together in New York City, Rachel Cohen and Andrés Modak struggled to figure out how to decorate their new home. Both recent Wharton grads, they had the creativity and business expertise to form their own solution to this common conundrum. Their online company, Snowe, carries all the home essentials you could ever want, from silky sheets and fluffy robes to dinnerware, barware, and candles.

The design philosophy is based on the idea of “real living” — what are the materials and silhouettes you’ll never tire of and want to use every day? As a result, none of the products should surprise you too much. For tableware specifically, you’ll find classic white plates that you can pair with silver, black, or gold flatware, as well as wine glasses, tumblers, and champagne flutes to toast with at dinner parties.

Materials and construction: Plates and mugs are made in Portugal using porcelain imported from Limoges, France, which has a rich history of porcelain production dating back to the 1700s. They’re safe for the dishwasher, microwave, and oven. The drinkware is made in Italy with crystallized glass that’s strong enough for “hyperenthusiastic toasts,” according to Snowe. The flatware is crafted from Italian 18/10 stainless steel, with three finish options: Brushed Gold, Black Satin or Classic Stainless.

Other things to know about Snowe:

  • $5 flat rate shipping on all orders
  • 60-day return policy
  • Homebody Perks is a rewards program for exclusive discounts and perks
  • Has its own registry, which includes benefits like a 20% 1-year anniversary discount and a ‘Thank You Manager”

Background: Food52 launched its shop in 2013 to bring its community of home cooks a tightly curated collection of well-designed home and kitchen wares, from practical small appliances and cookware to beautiful decor and dinnerware. While you’ll see some big and recognizable brands in the shop, it’s more likely you’ll come across and fall in love with the artsy, independent brands.

While there’s no shortage of tableware styles — from minimalist pieces to plates and bowls in bright colors, intricate patterns, and a wide spectrum of finishes — Food52 Shop’s selection doesn’t feel overwhelming. Plus, every single product is shown styled, so you can easily imagine how it would fit onto your own table setting.

Materials and construction: In addition to classic ceramic, you can shop less conventional tableware materials like bamboo and melamine. Details about construction and care can be found on each individual product page, but for the most part, all the tableware sold is safe for the microwave and dishwasher.

Rigby

online tableware 4

Shop tableware at Rigby here

Product range: Dinnerware, flatware, drinkware

Background: Sara Kelly, a former product development and marketing manager, found that the ceramic plates she bought while on a European vacation brought her joy long after the trip was over. The problem was, she had difficulty finding additional tableware that inspired the same feelings. Plus, as a single professional, she felt bombarded by the constant pressure of wedding registries and the expectations of entertaining. Her Houston-based startup Rigby aims to take away that pressure and make setting the table easy and enjoyable again.

Rigby’s basic tableware sets include salad and dinner plates, breakfast and pasta bowls, mugs, drinking glasses, and flatware. They’re easy on the eyes with their neutral colors, and easy on your hands because of their thick construction and soft angled curves.

Materials and construction: Rigby’s products are made in two different regions in Portugal that are known for their ceramics production, steelmaking, and glassblowing. The pieces are all handmade, built to last, and dishwasher-safe. The ceramic dinnerware is safe for the microwave, oven, and freezer.

East Fork

online tableware 5

Shop tableware at East Fork here

Product range: Dinnerware and drinkware, as well as flatware and other tabletop goods made by other merchants

Background: East Fork is a 10-year-old ceramics shop that’s a beloved institution in its community of Asheville, NC, but has grown in popularity nationwide thanks to the homegrown, slightly rustic look of its dinnerware. It started out of a tobacco farm with three friends and is today a business with more than 80 employees and 20 different glazes released to date.

In addition to selling its own ceramic wares, its online shop features pantry essentials (e.g. beans from Rancho Gordo), cookbooks (e.g. “Donabe”), and decor (e.g. hand-embroidered Otomi table runners) curated from small or independent makers. Similarly to shopping at a small, personable, and creative neighborhood store, you’ll check out of East Fork’s site with more than a few beautiful pieces you didn’t expect to buy.

Materials and construction: East Fork uses clays dug from the American Southeast, along with glazes that are all formulated and mixed in-house. The distinctive brown speckles on its products come from the firing process, which draws iron from the iron-rich clay to the surface. The clay is molded into pottery through a few different techniques, including jiggering and wheel-throwing, and fired at a high temperature to give it a vitrified surface. You can find more details about East Fork’s process here. All the pottery pieces are safe for the microwave and dishwasher.

Other things to know about East Fork:

  • Shipping charges are based on a flat-rate tier system according to the price of your order
  • 30-day return policy
  • Has its own registry
  • Factory tours available in Asheville, NC. The factory is currently closed due to the coronavirus.

Our Place

Shop tableware at Our Place here

Product range: Dinnerware, drinkware, cookware, and a rotating collection of globally-sourced home goods

Background: We love Our Place’s multicultural spin on kitchen gear. While you’ll always be able to shop the brand’s Essentials collection of tried-and-true cookware and dinnerware (we’re especially fond of their hand-painted speckled ceramic stacking plates), Our Place’s most interesting offerings are the result of limited-run partnerships with artists and craftspeople from around the globe.

So far in the realm of tableware, these include Chinese serving platters and chopsticks made from locally sourced wood as part of a Chinese Lunar New Year collection and mezcal glasses, bowls, and woven table runners included in a bundle of handmade goods from the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The brand also places particular emphasis on ethical production and labor, which isn’t surprising considering co-founder Shiza Shahid is the former CEO of the Malala Fund nonprofit.

Materials and construction: The ceramic dinnerware is made in China and handpainted with a glossy, speckled finish, while the drinking glasses are made in Thailand with handblown natural glass. Both are safe for the microwave and dishwasher.

Lulu and Georgia

online tableware 7

Shop tableware at Lulu and Georgia here

Product range: Dinnerware, servingware, flatware, drinkware, and general home goods and furniture

Background: While Lulu and Georgia is a large online home store where you can find all types of furniture and decor, each of its products still manages to feel unique and special. Founder Sara Sugarman comes from a well-known company in the home space (her family owns luxury flooring company Decorative Carpets), but unlike her family business, which caters to hospitality and designer clients, Lulu and Georgia is for regular consumers like you and me.

With its wooden, cast iron, and terra cotta options, Lulu and Georgia is best for those seeking rustic tableware that’s easy to mix and match. You’ll find the most offerings in the dinnerware and servingware sections and the site makes it easy to complete your tabletop set with its “Complete the Look” feature at the bottom of each product page.

Materials and construction: Many of the products are crafted in the US by a variety of makers, though we did also see ceramics that were made in Portugal. Details about construction and care can be found on each individual product page, but for the most part, all the tableware sold is safe for the microwave and dishwasher.

Verishop

online tableware 8

Shop tableware at Verishop here

Product range: Dinnerware, flatware, servingware, drinkware, barware, and other home goods, in addition to fashion, beauty, and kids products

Background: Verishop is a fairly new site that frames itself as an Amazon alternative, offering both a more reliable and high-quality product selection and a shipping policy that’s just as convenient as Amazon’s. Across categories, there’s an emphasis on ethical and sustainable brands and online startups.

The tableware section is no exception, highlighting brands like Year & Day, Hawkins New York, and Quette Home. Product selection here isn’t as robust as Food52’s, but the fast two-day shipping turnaround could definitely make Verishop an attractive place to make a purchase when you need high-quality products quickly.

Materials and construction: Details about construction and care can be found on each individual product page, but for the most part, all the tableware sold is safe for the microwave and dishwasher. We found it more difficult to track down information about where the tableware is made, so you may need to research individual brands outside of the Verishop site.

Other things to know about Verishop:

  • 60-day return policy
  • Offers competitor price matching within 30 days of purchase

Secretly Good: this vegan cashew cheese is so tasty that it meets even my dairy-purist standards

A piece of toast next to Miyoko's European Style Cultured Vegan Butter

Anyone who’s been friends with me for a while (or just been to one happy hour networking event together) has seen me stack enough cheese cubes on my plate to build a small fortress. My leaf-to-feta salad ratio leans heavily on dairy, and I refuse to call it a panini if it isn’t glued together with slabs of mozzarella.

But, for reasons ranging from animal wellbeing to my skin routinely breaking out after a beloved grilled cheese, I’ve been trying to cut down.

I’ve tried a lot of vegan and plant-based cheeses (my partner is vegan, as are a handful of my friends) and the brand that consistently blows me away is Miyoko’s Creamery.

Organic Roadhouse Chedda Cultured Vegan Cheese Spread (small)European Style Cultured Vegan Butter (small)

Fully lactose-free and made from ingredients like oat and cashew milk, coconut oil, navy beans, sea salt, and mushroom extract, Miyoko’s products are perfect if you’re craving a solid dairy or cheese alternative such as a spread, easy butter sub, or burger topping.

My favorites have been the Roadhouse Chedda’ dip and the cheese wheels, which come in flavors like Classic Chive, Sundried Tomato Garlic, Smoked English Farmhouse, and French-Style Winter Truffle. (Yes, I have eaten them all and in very close to one sitting!)

For me, the game-changer is the taste: My biggest gripe with other vegan dairy substitutes is that there can be an artificial-feeling aftertaste or even just an overpowering nutritional yeast presence. (I love a sprinkling of nooch, but I have my limits).

Organic Plainly Classic Vegan Cream Cheese (small)Classic Fresh Italian Style Vegan Mozzarella Cheese (small)

Miyoko’s doesn’t feel like it’s trying to directly mimic how dairy tastes (which seems impossible to replicate): Instead, it’s just trying to make a delicious, savory product that can expertly fill the role of cheese in whatever meal you make, whether as an artichoke dip base or a bagel-enhancing spread.

As an added bonus, I like that the ingredient lists aren’t too complex or full of lots of additives (a common critique of plant-based products). Miyoko Schinner, the company’s founder and CEO, previously published a vegan cookbook with simple, flavorful recipes, and it seems like Miyoko’s vegan cheese applies the same logic of prioritizing fewer ingredients without skimping on flavor.

And if you need any more ringing endorsements of this cheese, look at Schinner herself: Like me, she too was once obsessed with cheese. She loved it so much that she spent years creating plant-based substitutes before landing on Forbes’ 50 Over 50 list and acquiring $52 million in investments to expand Miyoko’s.

I’ll dunk a chip in cashew cheese dip to that.

Instead of going to bars during the pandemic, my roommates and I started a weekly cocktail club – these 7 items are everything a beginner bartender needs to get started

Four women holding wine glasses as part of DIY cocktail club
My roommates and I during one of our at-home cocktail club sessions.

  • My roommates and I made the most of turning 21 years old during the pandemic so we created an at-home weekly cocktail club.
  • We picked a theme, made two cocktails to rate and chat about, and played board games.
  • Our favorite items to use were a cocktail shaker set and a Polaroid camera.

I turned 21 years old during the pandemic along with most of my close friends. Since we couldn’t go to bars, we decided to do weekly themed cocktail clubs where we selected drinks, dressed up, and played board games. I don’t have a ton of context, but I think it was way more fun than going out to bars – and significantly cheaper. Plus, now we all know what kind of cocktails we prefer when we do go out.

Here is everything we used to create our cocktail club and make the most of turning 21 years old at home.

One of the most memorable cocktails we created was a sour candy-inspired drink. Adding the Citrus Sour Syrup to our drinks, the first sip made our lips pucker instantly. It tasted exactly like sour patch kids candy and was a 10/10 experience.

After the drinks were mixed, we would snap a Polaroid photo to capture the theme and the cocktails of the evening. It was a priceless way to commemorate a year’s worth of cocktail clubs. We ended our 12-month lease with over 40 polaroid photos.

When we finished rating the cocktails, Catan would often make its way out of the game cabinet. Anyone who has played Catan likely knows how fun but competitive it gets — or maybe it’s just my group of friends. Either way, it was always a solid way to end the evening.

Wine Club (4 bottles) (small)

If you’ve ever been hounded by ads from Bright Cellars, then you know that it’s a wine club created by two MIT grads. But what is Bright Cellars beyond the catchy marketing?

Having tested a dozen other wine clubs by now, including Winc, Firstleaf, and Picked by Wine.com, I tried Bright Cellars with a healthy skepticism of what more it could bring to the table.

Related Article Module: The 6 best wine subscriptions we tested in 2021

Truthfully, it does have a lot of similarities to other wine clubs, including the use of algorithms to match you with wines, a wine-rating system, and dangerously convenient delivery. But as I discovered once I received my first box, Bright Cellars also has some unique features that make it stand out in an already crowded space.

How Bright Cellars works

As a new user, you’ll start by taking a quiz that asks about your preferences and tastes. It includes questions about the kinds of flavors you like, the type of wine you usually buy, and what kinds of wines you want to discover more of.

Then, you just sit back and wait for your wine to arrive. Bright Cellars sends four bottles every month for $80, plus $8 shipping. You can also adjust your subscription frequency to bi-monthly or quarterly shipments if you don’t need that much wine every single month. If at any point you want to cancel your subscription, it’s easy to do so in your account settings.

After you’ve sampled your wines, go back to your online account to rate your wines, jot down your impressions, or review the tasting notes. Bright Cellars will take your ratings into account when it’s putting together your next box of wine. Then, you simply repeat this process, receiving, sampling, and rating wines and getting a better sense of the wines you actually enjoy.

In addition to funneling your various data points into its algorithm, Bright Cellars has a few in-house wine pros, including a certified sommelier, who help curate the batch of wine that your next shipment will be chosen from.

screenshot of the wine ranking system for bright cellars wine club review 2021

One area where Bright Cellars is stronger than other wine clubs is its member rewards program. You can earn points through activities like referring a friend to the platform, giving a gift, repurchasing wine from your monthly box, and rating your matches. The points can be redeemed for corkscrews or more wine. Through this system, you can get freebies by doing things you were probably going to do anyway.

Bright Cellars review

I tried Bright Cellars for myself to show you what you can expect when you join the membership.

The process throughout was smooth, from taking the quiz to receiving and trying my wines.

In the taste quiz, which asked questions like what kind of chocolate, tea, and juice I liked, all my answers pointed to sweet, rich, and citrus-y flavors. I also said I liked mostly white wines but was open to trying an interesting red.

Once my first shipment was on its way, I received timely notifications by text about the delivery progress, including when it was officially delivered to my downstairs lobby.

The wines were safely packed in a cardboard box, with thick and sturdy dividers. Also included in the box was a small booklet explaining wine basics like how to open and store your wine, as well as individual, beautifully illustrated info cards explaining each wine’s tasting notes.

front and back views of the tasting note info cards from bright cellars wine club review 2021

I loved the packaging and presentation of the wines, and I enjoyed trying them all even more. Matching my penchant for floral and citrus flavors, there was a Riesling that had notes of tangerine, peach, and jasmine. In addition, I was introduced to Verdejo, an herbaceous wine made with grapes only grown in a small region of Spain. It definitely felt like the service listened to my preferences – including my request for a lineup of mostly white wine – while also giving me new and interesting wines to try.

I have a much better sense of the different varietals, techniques for tasting wine, and other wine knowledge than when I first started my wine education a couple of years ago, but I still found Bright Cellars’ informative tasting cards and online resources to be very useful.

One aspect I wish could be improved is the wine reordering process. Once you realize you love a wine, you have the option to re-purchase it, but only in quantities of four, six, or 12 bottles. Personally, I’ve yet to try a wine I loved so much that I wanted an additional four (at least) bottles, but maybe that’s just me. If I could simply re-purchase one or two extra bottles, then I’d be even happier with the service.

The bottom line

Even if you’re not a total beginner, Bright Cellars still brings a lot of convenience and an unpretentious attitude to the world of wine. And if you are a beginner, then Bright Cellars is one of the best wine clubs to help you develop your palate, without spending too much money.

Pros: Dynamic rating system, fair price point, reliable delivery, strong rewards program

Cons: Can only repurchase favorite wines in large quantities

I’ve tested more than a dozen air fryers and this is one of my favorites

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

Cosori Smart WiFi air fryer use
The Cosori Smart WiFi air fryer connects with an app.

  • A high-quality air fryer browns food quickly using minimal oil.
  • The Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer is dishwasher safe, cooks quickly, and is Wi-Fi-connected, though I didn’t find this feature as useful as it could be.
  • If you’re looking for more options, check out our guide to the best air fryers.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickySmart Wi-Fi Air Fryer (small)Related Article Module: The 5 best air fryers we tested in 2021

An air fryer is essentially an energy-efficient, fast-cooking convection oven that fits on your counter. They’re relatively affordable and convenient to use, making them especially helpful in apartments and small spaces. They use heated air to produce the Maillard reaction that gives deep-fried food its distinct browned exterior while keeping the insides moist. Air fryers do this with a fraction of the oil, making them a healthier alternative to the deep fryer.

Though air fryers have been on the market for a decade, they still require you to manually set the cook time. I tested the Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer, which has Wi-Fi connectivity for a more convenient way to cook.

Design and specs

cosori air fryer

The Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer is Alexa- and Wi-Fi-enabled through the VeSync app available from Google Play and the App Store. This gives you remote control of the appliance, intelligent monitoring, delayed start, and access to more than 100 recipes.

Though it has a relatively large footprint – 13 inches high by 11 inches deep by 11 inches wide with a drawer handle that juts out two inches – the Cosori WiFi-enabled air fryer has a spacious 5.8-quart interior that can fit up to 6 pounds of food. Plus, the unit fits easily under most cupboards.

The air fryer has a temperature range of 170 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and features 11 presets for cooking seafood, desserts, bacon, frozen foods, and more. The timer runs for up to 60 minutes, which should be more than enough for most uses. About halfway through cooking, a light pops on to remind you to shake the food in the basket for even cooking. Or, you can choose to receive a notification on your phone.

Setup process

Within 10 minutes of opening the box, I was making tater tots using my phone. The setup process is painless and intuitive. You just remove the packaging, wash the drawer and basket, plug the unit in, download the VeSync app, and connect to the air fryer. The whole process was seamless, and I didn’t hit any hitches, which is impressive since smart devices occasionally have trouble connecting or require lengthy firmware updates.

Our review of the Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer

As you’ve gathered by now, the Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer is unique in that it’s supported by the VeSync app that connects to the appliance over Wi-Fi. The app has dozens of recipes for breakfast foods, appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts. Once you select a recipe, the app gives you step by step instructions for making the meal, including controlling the air fryer when appropriate.

Within the app, you can access the history of recipes you’ve made and save your favorites. When your meal is done cooking, the VeSync app sends your smart device notifications to let you know.

Another smart feature is the ability to plan your meal up to four hours in advance. So, provided the ingredients remain safe at room temperature, you can load your creation into the basket and set the air fryer to cook at a later time.

There are a few recipes I use to test how well an air fryer works. First, the toast test tells me how evenly and quickly the air fryer cooks. I simply place a slice of bread in the air fryer and check on it every minute. In this test, the bread was evenly toasted and ready to eat after four minutes, which is very good.

Next, I made two pounds of French fries from scratch using Yukon gold potatoes. After 30 minutes of cooking, the fries were crispy and golden. My kindergartener couldn’t get enough of them.

The third recipe is blackened chicken. I rub Cajun seasoning on two pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts and air fry them. I keep wireless probe thermometers in the breasts so I immediately know when they’re done. After 25 minutes, the internal temperature was safe. And, the chicken was moist and juicy.

Another sign that an air fryer works efficiently is that the exterior stays cool to the touch while cooking. This was certainly the case with the Cosori air fryer. The only spot that felt hot was by the vent in the back. Other than that, the appliance appeared to be using all of the heat it produced to cook my meal.

Though I generally handwash kitchen items to increase their lifespan, I just don’t have the time and energy sometimes. I like that I can pop the basket and drawer of the Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer into the dishwasher. And, when I’m inspired, washing these components by hand is also a breeze.

Cons to consider

Call me a Luddite, but I found the voice control to be overkill. It’s kind of fun to command my smart thermostat to tell my air fryer to start/stop cooking, but in my time testing the Cosori unit, I never felt the need to control it vocally.

While the app had useful recipes and the remote functions worked as advertised, I didn’t find the remote cooking features all that useful. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have these features at your disposal for those rare circumstances when they might help, especially considering the virtually identical “non-smart” Cosori Air Fryer costs just as much. If you happen to see that that non-smart version is less expensive, I’d recommend that one instead.

Manually setting the time and temperature on the Cosori could be a pain. I don’t like that there’s a button for toggling between time and temperature. This was done so that the same plus and minus buttons could be used to adjust both settings, but I found it to be an inconvenience.

The bottom line

Cosori Smart WiFi air fryer tray handle
Cosori Smart WiFi air fryer tray handle is easy to grip.

Despite these negatives, we think the Cosori Smart WiFi Air Fryer is an excellent appliance for fast, efficient cooking of healthy meals. The middle-of-the-pack price tag is more than worth it for the capacity and high-end features.

Unless you are a major techie and need to have the latest smart home gadgets, I wouldn’t recommend buying this exclusively for the Wi-Fi connectivity. I see limited use-cases for smart features. However, this is still an outstanding air fryer at a reasonable price and I would recommend it to anyone interested in trying a healthier alternative to deep-frying.

Pros: Wi-Fi-connected, Alexa-enabled, dishwasher-safe, large capacity, many safety features, cooks quickly

Cons: Manual operation is sometimes a pain

A super-automatic espresso machine

luxury products 2021 Saeco Xelsis Super Automatic Espresso Machine

Saeco Xelsis Super Automatic Espresso Machine, $2,019.94, available at Amazon

I’ve used this espresso maker four times a day for three years now, and I love it. It can make 15 different coffee drinks with the press of a button. Plus, you can customize the drinks to match your preferences for strength, foam quantity, milk quantity, and more. It also lets you create up to six user profiles for storing your go-to drinks. I’d never be able to afford this on my own, but my life would be less enjoyable without it. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

A classic champagne

luxury products 2021 Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne

Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne, $63.97,

I love this champagne and drink it often for special occasions and dinner with friends. It’s not super dry, but it’s not sweet either — think of the most perfectly balanced glass of champagne ever, and this is it. — Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

A leg-massaging system

luxury products 2021 Hyperice NormaTec Pulse 2.0 Recovery System

Hyperice NormaTec Pulse 2.0 Recovery System, $899.99, available at Best Buy

This elite recovery system single-handedly saves me from lead legs after a heavy lifting day and reduces my soreness significantly to let me more readily ski back-to-back on powder days during the winter. The advanced compression and patterns somehow reduce soreness better than any foam roller, massage gun, or yoga class I’ve ever tried. You can train or race seriously hard one day, sit in the NormaTec that night, and — rather than cringing every time you stand up or sit down — get back to it the next day. It’s worth every penny for any serious athlete. — Rachael Schultz, health, fitness, and outdoors updates editor

I’m training to run a 5K in under 20 minutes. This requires a lot of running, and the NormaTec Pulse Recovery System helps my legs recover faster so I can get back on the road. I use this every evening while watching TV. The strong compression works my muscles and keeps them from getting too tight. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

A private flight

Private or semi-private flights, starting at $99 each way, check out our full coverage

I hate flying, and commercial flights have become increasingly uncomfortable with cramped seating, long security and boarding processes, and extra charges for seemingly everything. I had the opportunity to fly private once, and it was a world of difference. It was quiet, comfortable, and so fast — no long security lines or people queuing to board. The experience made the process of flying enjoyable for once. Fortunately, flying private or semi-private isn’t as cost-prohibitive as it once was. Companies like JSX offer semi-private flights for as little as $99 each way, with all baggage, food, drinks, and pets included. It’s now something I consider every time I need to fly. — Lauren Savoie, senior editor, home and kitchen

An indoor garden

luxury products 2021 gardyn indoor vertical garden

Gardyn Indoor Vertical Garden, $799, available at Amazon

Gardyn arrived in December — not the ideal time for growing produce in Michigan. To make matters worse, I don’t have anything resembling a green thumb. Yet, within two months, I went from a few seeds to harvesting large leafy greens for fresh organic salads. The Gardyn system automatically waters the plants three times a day, supplies lighting 20 hours per day, and even has cameras so you can view your plants’ progress remotely. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

A spa robe

Spa Robe, $249, available at Four Seasons

Everything about this bathrobe screams indulgence, from the buttery microsuede exterior to the ultra-warm and soft microfiber lining to the embroidered Four Seasons chest logo that switches you into vacation mode. The packaging is beautiful, too: It comes in a nice, hefty box with a gift tie, and it’s wrapped in tissue paper stamped with a wax seal. Treat yourself (or a loved one); trust me. — Connie Chen, senior reporter, home & kitchen

A premium soda maker

luxury products 2021 aarke premium carbonator

Aarke Premium Carbonator, $219.95, available at Williams Sonoma

SodaStream and plenty of other brands make effective carbonators for half the price of this one by Aarke, but none of them look nice out on your countertop. My kitchen opens up to the living room, so it was important that my appliances look elegant. Not only does the Aarke do that, but it also works exceptionally well. — Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

I’ve used SodaStreams in the past, and they work fine, but they don’t compare to the ease-of-use and attractive appearance of the Aarke. I just press down the lever until it makes a rude sound then release. I like my soda extra carbonated, so I go for three spurts. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

A warm yet cute winter jacket

luxury products 2021 Fjallraven Singi Down Jacket

Fjallraven Singi Down Jacket, starting at $299.98, available at Backcountry

This winter jacket does the impossible of keeping you incredibly warm — thanks to 600 fill power ethically sourced down — while also looking incredibly cute with a faux-fur hood and adjustable interior waist cinch. The jacket is water-resistant, has a ton of pockets, and, as with everything Fjällräven makes, is designed to last years, if not decades, so it is both sustainable and a long-term investment for the high price. — Rachael Schultz, health, fitness, and outdoors updates editor

An adjustable air bed

Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed, $3,699 (queen), available at Sleep Number

I test a new mattress every two weeks, but I’d sleep on the Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed every night if I could. It’s the best adjustable bed in our mattress guide, and I like that I can customize the firmness. When I shift positions in the night, the air automatically adjusts to provide consistent support and pressure relief. There’s also a built-in sleep tracker that gives me tips for improving my sleep. If you can afford it, this is the bed for you. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

A versatile satin dress

luxury products 2021 AllSaints Hera 2-in-1 dress

Hera 2-in-1 Dress, $319, available at AllSaints

I don’t usually spend this much on dresses, but with three small weddings coming up, I decided to splurge on an AllSaints satin dress that comes with a cropped matching pullover. Not only is it luxurious, but it’s elegant and practical for fall weather. I know I will wear the dress and sweater separately, so it’s one of my favorite purchases ever. — Anna Popp, home & kitchen fellow

A custom floral arrangement

floracracy flower delivery service review 2021

Custom floral arrangements, starting at $155, available at Floracracy

While testing numerous flower delivery services for our guide, I fell in love with Floracracy, which makes some of the most beautiful, luxurious arrangements I’ve ever seen. The personalization and small details make Floracracy arrangements feel like a truly special gift, and it’s now my go-to stop for flower gifts. — Lauren Savoie, senior editor, home and kitchen

A cozy sheet set

luxury products 2021 magic linen striped in natural linen sheet set

Striped in Natural Linen Sheet Set, $281 (Queen), available at Magic Linen

I know over $300 seems ridiculous to spend on a sheet set, but trust me when I say these are worth it. I’ve owned my Magic Linen sheets for nearly four years, and they’ve grown softer and cozier with every wash. The linen is breathable and cool but still comfy enough to snuggle up in on cold nights. I know this set will last me for decades to come. — Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

A texturizing hair spray

luxury products 2021 Oribe dry texturizing spray

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $23 for 2.2 ounces, available at Sephora

I have straight, flat hair, and this is one of the only products that will reliably give me volume and body — which isn’t surprising considering Oribe’s cult-following and luxe reputation. It’s perfect for zhuzhing before a night out, lasts for hours even in humidity, and it doesn’t make your hair stiff or sticky the day after. — Rachael Schultz, health, fitness, and outdoors updates editor

A self-emptying robot vacuum

Image of iRobot Roomba s9+ robot vacuum near dog best luxury items 2021

iRobot Roomba s9+ Robot Vacuum, $1,099.99, available at Amazon

I’ve tested dozens of robot vacuums, and while the Roomba s9+ is the most expensive, I think it’s worth every penny. It’s the best vac for hardwood floors in our robot vacuum guide. It also features a self-emptying dustbin, which reduces the amount of maintenance you need to perform. You can also set no-go zones, and the extra-wide brushes and strong suction pick up dirt on a single pass. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter

An electric bidet seat

luxury products 2021 Bio Bidet Discovery DLS Electric Bidet Seat

Bio Bidet Discovery DLS Electric Bidet Seat, $674.25, available at Best Buy

After testing dozens of bidets, I can say the $800 Discovery DLS bidet toilet seat has the most high-end features of any I’ve tried. In addition to the usual water-temperature adjustments, heated seat, warm air drying, and nightlight, it automatically opens and closes. If you want to see what washing with water (instead of just dry toilet paper) is all about, this is the luxurious way to try it out. — James Brains, home & kitchen reporter
