Prime Day 2021 Nespresso Deals

Amazon Prime Day 2021 is here, and as always, there are deals galore, including discounts on home and kitchen equipment and accessories, like Nespresso machines.

Nespresso machines perform outstanding feats of coffee making given their price and size, and if you like starting your day with an espresso or three, they’re a convenient alternative to four-figure, counter-space-hogging espresso machines.

Plus, now that Nespresso machines have been popular for a while, there is no shortage of third-party brands making capsules for them using fresh coffee: Starbucks, Peet’s, Cafe Bustelo, Kauai Coffee…the list goes on. Since those capsules aren’t exactly cheap, Prime Day is the perfect time to stock up. You can read more about our favorite Nespresso pods below or in our coffee pod buying guide.

Make sure your Prime membership is up to date, as you can only take advantage of discounts if you’re signed up. For more Prime Day coverage, follow the best Prime Day kitchen appliance deals.

The best Prime Day 2021 deals on Nespresso machines

Nespresso machines produce a velvety, viscous, frothy coffee that is about as close to espresso as possible without being espresso, precisely. Our favorite pod espresso machines from our buying guide include the Nespresso Pixie by Breville, which is currently on sale, and the Nespresso De’Longhi Lattissima One Espresso Machine. The Pixie is our go-to choice for a simple, compact machine that will get the job done. If you’re making espresso drinks requiring steamed milk, you may prefer the Nespresso De’Longhi Lattissima, which has a built-in frother. For now, we’re not seeing much in the way of deals on Nespresso machines. It’s worth continuing to check back regularly, though, because there’s still a chance some new ones might pop up.

Best Prime Day 2021 Nespresso Pod deals

Nespresso pods are a quick and easy solution to an espresso-like drink at home, and because there are more and more third-party brands out there, there are plenty of options for fresh and even compostable Nespresso pods. If you’re more the DIY type, you can buy refillable capsules, which let you customize the pod with whatever coffee you desire. Read more about the best Nespresso pods in our guide. Other Great Prime Day 2021 coffee machine and coffee deals

Of course, Nespresso isn’t the only big name in coffee worth purchasing. We’re also seeing great deals on some of our favorite drip coffee machines, traditional espresso machines, and other pod coffee makers. Here are the best deals on coffee machines and accessories happening right now:

How to choose the right Nespresso machine

Nespresso machines come in various forms, but the basic thing to consider is whether or not you want an ESE (paper) pod or capsule machine. Capsule machines are more versatile and what we primarily recommend, at least for now, because there are so many third-party options, including refillable capsules so that you can grind and load your own fresh coffee. Just keep in mind that this is time-consuming.

We tested pod coffee machines and really liked the Nespresso Pixie by Breville and the Nespresso De’Longhi Lattissima One Espresso Machine. The Pixie is the best choice for most people because it’s compact, easy to use, and not too expensive. The Lattissima might be a better choice if you plan on making espresso drinks like lattes and cappuccinos, since it has a built-in frother, but it requires careful cleaning and we’re not sold on it. Keep in mind that the frother poses a significant upgrade in price – we usually see the Lattissima retailing for $100 more than the Pixie. Instead, consider a simple, inexpensive hand wand milk frother like the Powerlix Milk Pro, our top pick from our milk frother buying guide, to save a significant chunk of change.

Buying refurbished electronics can save you a lot of money – here’s what to look for, plus 7 expert-vetted deals

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

microsoft store surface laptop tablets
Microsoft is one of the many manufacturers to offer refurbished tech at discounted prices.

It can be scary to buy refurbished items, but when you know what you’re looking for, it can be as good as buying brand new.

Refurbished items are generally returns, faulty open-box products, or brand new units with minor cosmetic flaws that have been returned to “like new” quality by the manufacturer. We’re big fans of them here at Insider Reviews – we’ve even written reviews of our personal refurb purchases from Apple and Nintendo.

Buying refurbished has its benefits. For most shoppers, the most convincing benefit is the lower cost. Depending on the item and the manufacturer, a refurbished item can cost you up to 50% less than a brand new one. Another perk is that it’s a bit more environmentally friendly: you’re essentially buying a recycled item. In the end, both refurbished and new items will ideally deliver the same user experience, likely with some differences in packaging and cosmetics, so long as you do your research before adding to the cart.

When determining a refurb’s worthiness, it comes down to two major factors to make the judgment call: who refurbished the item and who is selling it?

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

The best refurb deals available right now

When shopping refurb deals, we keep an eye out for items that are discounted compared to typical refurb pricing, which is generally much less than brand new. Therefore, original prices noted are considerably less than that of items in new condition.

13.3-inch MacBook Air with M1 Chip (Refurbished) (medium, Preferred: Apple)Multi Auto Cordless Car Hand Vac (medium)Product Card (medium, Preferred: Sonos)Product Card (medium, Preferred: Sonos)Product Card (medium)Product Card (medium)AirPods Pro (Refurbished) (medium, Preferred: Best Buy)
Who should I trust to refurbish an item?

When it comes to buying an item refurbished, there is no source more reliable than the manufacturer. Year-round, manufacturers like Dyson, Nintendo, and Apple offer refurbished goods for considerably less money than in new condition. I, personally, bought a refurbished Dyson V6 cordless stick vacuum 3 years ago during Black Friday, and not only did the item arrive looking new, but it also still performs well despite daily use.

Manufacturer refurbs can also come with pretty hefty warranties. Dyson, for example, provides a 6- or 12-month warranty with every order, along with expert support and the promise of genuine Dyson parts in your item.

If you’re a frequent online shopper, you’ve surely come across a few items marked as “seller-refurbished.” Our advice: outside of a few exceptions, don’t risk it. While you don’t necessarily need to limit yourself to only buying from manufacturer storefronts, buying an item refurbished by anyone other than the manufacturer is dubious. Certain special cases like Geek Squad Certified Refurbished and Amazon Renewed are worth considering, but these have less specialized support and notably shorter warranty coverage (typically, only 90 days).

Where can I buy refurbs from?

The easiest, most reliable places to find refurbished items for sale are from the manufacturer’s storefronts. Here are a few brands that sell certified refurbs directly from their sites:

  • Acer Recertified: Laptops, tablets, PCS, displays, and more
  • Apple: iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, and more
  • Dell Refurbished: Laptops, PCs, workstations, monitors, and more
  • Dyson Outlet: Cordless stick vacuums, upright vacuums, and other home appliances
  • Jabra: Headphones, earbuds, and more
  • Kitchenaid: Stand mixers, blenders, and more countertop appliances
  • Lenovo Outlet: Laptops
  • Microsoft: Laptops, tablets, PCs, and more
  • Nintendo: Nintendo consoles, controllers, and more
  • Sony: Professional broadcast, production, corporate, and educational products

In addition to buying straight from the maker, many big-box retailers are also trustworthy sources to get refurbs from. Sellers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and Newegg have the goods, year-round. Some manufacturers even have storefronts elsewhere, like the Jabra and Dyson storefronts on eBay.

We also highly recommend making the purchase with a credit card, no matter where you’re buying it from — there are often routes to getting extended purchase protection. Depending on your card, you can get up to a year of additional coverage on items that come with a manufacturer’s warranty.

What items are usually good to buy refurbished?

Tech dominates the refurb market, but if you keep a lookout, you can often find small home appliances reliably refurbished. Vacuums (both cordless and upright), fans, heaters, stand mixers, blenders, and the like are pretty dependable refurbished, and they arrive in like-new condition.

Laptops, computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and accessories are typical to find refurbished, and they’re often worth considering. Check out our buying guides to find the best option for you.

What refurbs should I avoid?

As mentioned above, don’t bother with refurbs done by anyone who isn’t the manufacturer. The warranties never last as long, it doesn’t guarantee the use of genuine parts, and the product support you receive will never be as good — if you get any at all.

Much older generation tech is also not worth buying refurbished. It’s 2020: buying a refurbished iPhone 7 is a moot investment in an item nearing obsoletion.

Finally, don’t bother with anything that can’t have its battery replaced, like truly wireless earbuds and headphones. It’s a mixed bag getting these in any condition other than new; you’ll never know the battery’s remaining lifespan. With tech like tablets, smartphones, and computers, you can always bring them into a store for a battery replacement.

The 6 best spring cleaning products for kitchen and laundry appliances in 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Expecting fresh, clean clothes from a smelly washer, or sparkling plates from a dishwasher crusted with hard water minerals is a fool’s errand. All you’ll get is frustration and disappointment.

Luckily, there are easy-to-use products available that can restore appliances back to their prime. Many use natural ingredients and are not toxic to the environment or your lungs. Just a seasonal cleaning will usually remove build-up and flush away odors, allowing the appliances to do their jobs well. Of course, if your household has some big messes, you may need to clean the appliances more often.

Along with my own housekeeping, I’ve tested cleaning products for decades as a home economist for companies and publications. I’m always looking for the most effective, easiest to use, and the best value in products and these are the best ones for the job when it comes to cleaning appliances.

Here are the best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry appliances in 2021

The best overall

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 lemishine

If you are looking for one product that can take care of odors and soil build-up in your dishwasher, garbage disposal, and washing machine, Lemi Shine Multi-Purpose Appliance Cleaner is your best bet.

Pros: Non-toxic, uses natural ingredients, fresh scent, pre-measured individual packets, simple to use, suitable for multiple appliances

Cons: Does not clean the outside of the appliances

Even with all of the water and detergents that pass through the dishwasher, garbage disposal, and washing machine, they can still accumulate a layer of residue that traps soil, odor-causing bacteria, and minerals from hard water. When all this gunk clings to the inside of the appliance, it cannot perform optimally and causes problems.

LemiShine has developed a formula, based on crystallized citric extracts, that works to cut through that residue. By adding an envelope of the powder to an appliance and running a cycle with hot water, you will quickly have cleaner dishes and laundry, and odor-free garbage disposal.

While LemiShine offers individual appliance cleaners, the Multi-Purpose is the best value because of the versatility and price. I keep some on hand for quick and thorough cleanings anytime I see or sniff a problem.

The best for dishwashers

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 finish dishwasher

Easy to use and a top performer, Finish In-Wash Dishwasher Cleaner can be used while you wash a load of dishes. No extra cycle needed.

Pros: Can be used in a dishwasher loaded with dirty dishes, no wrapper to remove, effectively removes grease deposits, limescale, and odors

Cons: Excellent choice for regular cleaning, but may not remove years of heavy build-up

Stop and think of what lurks on your dishes when you stick them into the dishwasher — grease, bacteria, and crusty food. A good detergent and the volume of hot water swirling in the dishwasher cut through all of that gunk, leaving the dishes clean. But where does the messy stuff go?

Most gets flushed away, but some clings to the sides, seals, and components of the dishwasher. Eventually, the build-up becomes too much and redeposits on your dishes. No one needs that.

That’s where Finish In-Wash Dishwasher Cleaner comes in to cut through the limescale, grease, and fatty deposits that you can see, and also those in the hidden parts of the dishwasher. All that crud can clog pumps, drains, and pipes, which reduce the performance of your machine.

Every three months or so, I simply place one of the tablets in the bottom of the dishwasher tub when I’m ready to run a full wash cycle. There are no wrappers to remove or a need to empty the dishwasher of dirty dishes. Since Finish Quantum Max Powerball Tablets is rated as one of the best dishwasher detergents, using the Finish In-Wash Dishwasher Cleaner was the next natural step.

The best for garbage disposals

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 clr garbage disposal

The fun-to-watch foaming action of CLR Garbage Disposal Foaming Cleaner and Freshener leaves the disposal free of greasy residue and odors.

Pros: Non-toxic ingredients, simple to use, effectively removes odors and residue from disposal

Cons: Does not remove clogs or jams in the disposal

Maybe it’s because I always loved the vinegar and baking soda volcanoes at the science fair, but watching the foaming action of CLR Garbage Disposal Foaming Cleaner and Freshener makes me happy. Happy because I know that the foam is helping to dislodge bits of food and grease that is causing my garbage disposal to smell funky.

The individual, premeasured packet contains citric acid and sodium bicarbonate, along with other ingredients that help cut through the gunk and leave a fresh clean scent. It is so easy to use but you should follow the directions to allow the ingredients time to be effective. The cleaning time is around seven minutes, and there’s no need to scrub — just watch the science experiment happen.

I use CLR Garbage Disposal Foaming Cleaner and Freshener when I get a whiff of something foul. It should be noted that these packets will not remove a severe clog or jam in the disposal.

The best for washing machines

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 washing machine lemishine

If your laundry isn’t smelling as fresh as you’d like, Lemi Shine Washing Machine Cleaner will remove funky odors from the washer that are transferring to your towels and clothes.

Pros: Effectively removes body soil, bacteria, and detergent residue from the washing machine drum, includes wipes for hard-to-reach areas like door seals and the outside of the appliance, non-toxic, and pleasant citrus scent

Cons: Not widely available in all mass-market stores

Today’s high-efficiency washing machines use around 14 gallons of water and hold larger loads, and we use more cold and warm water to protect synthetic fabrics. That leaves lots of opportunity for body soil, product residue, and bacteria to cling to the inside of the washer drum and rubber seals that protect it from leaking.

All that gunk can redeposit on your clothes, making them less than clean and fresh. That’s why you need to clean your washer and the best cleaner is Lemi Shine Washing Machine Cleaner.

Using non-toxic citric acids, the powder strips away the build-up, and you even get a handy wipe to use after each cleaning cycle to capture any residue on the seals and to wipe down the outside of the washer where drips and soil can accumulate. I also love the fresh scent.

The best for ovens

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 easy off oven cleaner

Spills happen but Easy-Off Professional Max Fume Free Oven Cleaner will take care of the worst messes without burning your lungs or making you scrub forever.

Pros: Fume-free formula, removes heavy, baked-on stains, safe for electric and gas ovens

Cons: Does not work quickly, requires at least 40 minutes to work effectively

I’m a pie baker who can’t seem to remember not to overload the pie plate with filling. Sure enough, the pie bubbles over onto the oven floor. Fortunately, I know that clean-up can be simple with Easy-Off Professional Max Fume Free Oven Cleaner. Until I found this product, I dreaded cleaning the oven because of the fumes. No more.

The key to using it is having a cold oven. Just spray on the cleaner and wait at least 40 minutes (longer is even better). The grease and spills will wipe away easily. It’s safe to use in electric and gas ovens and oven racks — even ovens that proclaim to be self-cleaning.

The best for ceramic and glass stovetops

best cleaning products for kitchen and laundry 2021 weiman stovetop

Smooth glass and ceramic cooktops are prone to scratching. Weiman Cooktop Cleaner Max can safely get rid of cooked-on spills and tackle the stains and leave your cooktop scratch-free.

Pros: Removes the worst burned-on messes and grease effectively, does not scratch glass and ceramic surfaces, comes with a scrubbing pad

Cons: Does not remove scratches, not readily found in all mass-market stores

After years of the standard enamel and stainless cooktops that could stand up to scrubbing from a steel wool pad, I ended up with a smooth ceramic cooktop. It looks sleek and conducts heat well, but removing the overflow from a boiling pot was a challenge until I found Weiman Cooktop Cleaner Max.

The micro-bead technology gives just the right amount of abrasive power to remove burned-on food and grease but doesn’t scratch the surface. After cleaning and rinsing, there are no streaks or watermarks left behind. The lemon-scented paste formula is applied with a cleaning pad that is included, which stores conveniently on the top of the container.

How much does a mattress cost? We break down why mattresses cost what they do and what you should expect to spend

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

How much does a mattress cost 4x3
  • Mattress prices are influenced most by type, size, and whether it’s sold online or in a physical store.
  • Expect to pay $450 or less for a budget-friendly foam mattress, or at least $2,500 for a luxury latex mattress.
  • Mattress sales throughout the year can save you hundreds of dollars.

When it comes to buying a mattress, it doesn’t hurt to pay more for a quality model that will keep you comfortable and last for years. However, it helps to be aware of what those price ranges are so your expectations aren’t skewed and you don’t overpay for your mattress.

But how much does a mattress cost? There are several criteria to take into account. Read on to find out what determines the cost of a mattress, and learn what you can expect to pay for budget, mid-priced, and luxury models.

We’ll even explain how you can save money on a new mattress and pick up some free sleep accessories in the process.

Once you have a handle of your budget, check out our comprehensive guide to the best mattresses for every type of sleeper.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

What influences the cost of a mattress?

In determining the cost of a mattress these three criteria carry the most weight:

  • Type: What your mattress is made of (and how it’s made) influences cost in a big way. All-natural materials tend to command higher prices than synthetic materials.
  • Size: Naturally, bigger mattresses cost more. The price of a twin mattress is roughly half the cost of a king.
  • Buying online: Purchasing a mattress online is less expensive than buying from physical stores, which usually have significant markups on mattresses.

Additional factors that contribute to mattress costs:

  • Shipping costs: Although many popular bed-in-a-box brands offer free shipping.
  • White-glove setup: This extra service can also include the removal of your old mattress.
  • Returns: Some warranties may place the burden of return shipping costs onto the customer.
  • Foundations and box springs, or other necessary accessories: Some of these add-ons may be a requirement for you to enjoy for your new mattress.

Mattress costs by type

Prices vary quite a bit among mattress types, and even within the individual mattress types there are differences in costs. Here’s how it breaks down:

Type of mattress Budget Mid-priced Luxury
Foam mattress $450 or less From $1,000 From $1,300
Innerspring mattress $600 or less From $1,000 From $1,200
Hybrid mattress $1,100 or less From $1,500 From $2,200
Latex mattress $1,200 or less From $2,000 From $2,500

Foam mattress costs

Foam mattresses contain multiple layers of adaptable material that supports and contours your body. (Most bed-in-a-box brands specialize in foam mattresses.) Polyfoam, a high-density foam that degrades quickly with regular use, is typically found in budget foam mattresses. Memory foam and foam with specialty cooling materials are more durable but also more expensive.

Innerspring mattress costs

An innerspring mattress may be what comes to mind when you think of a traditional bed. While there’s little construction-wise to distinguish today’s hybrid mattresses from innerspring mattresses – both are usually made from a combination of foam and springs – many legacy mattress brands like Sleepy’s, Beautyrest, and others still sell mattresses under the innerspring category. These usually denote mattresses that are a bit firmer and have the traditional bounce of a spring mattress

Hybrid mattress costs

Hybrid is a newer term to describe mattresses that blend foam and springs. Construction-wise, they’re not all that different than today’s innerspring mattresses, but they may have more layers, thicker construction, and a softer feel than what you think of with a traditional spring mattress.

Latex mattress costs

Latex is a more eco-friendly alternative to memory foam. However, turning latex into foam is an involved and costly process – and that’s reflected in the price. Synthetic latex is less expensive than natural latex, but many latex mattresses on the market contain a blend of man-made filler and natural materials.

Air bed mattress costs

Air bed mattresses allow you to adjust the firmness via air pump, which makes it perfect for couples with different sleep preferences. This level of customization does come at a premium, however. The most expensive air beds have latex or memory foam comfort layers and include a remote control so you can make adjustments easily.

How much should I spend on a mattress?

Based on our testing, you should expect to spend between $1,000 to $2,000 for a really great quality Queen-sized mattress that is supportive and built for long-term use. Most of our top picks fall into this range. Time and time again our experts have said you should think of a mattress as an investment; you spend about a third of your life on it, and sleep quality has the ability to impact your health and well-being.

While you can spend more, in our experience, the benefits are minimal unless you’re buying a bed that is specifically engineered to solve a specific sleep problem like adjustable air beds or cooling mattresses.

Our mattress picks by budget

One of our favorite mid-priced mattresses is the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid Mattress. It’s made with CertiPUR-US certified foams and has a firmness that will appeal to most sleepers. Best of all, DreamCloud offers a generous 365-day trial, plus a lifetime warranty.

Premier Hybrid Mattress (small)

If price is no object, check out the luxury Tempur-Pedic PRObreeze Hybrid Mattress. It’s designed to keep you cool all night and provides pressure relief without that dreadful sinking feeling. A 10-year Tempur-Pedic warranty applies, but there’s no trial period.

PRObreeze Mattress (Queen) (small)

As for a budget mattress, the affordable Zinus Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress starts at $198. It has excellent motion transfer and cooling properties for its price; however, the tradeoff here is poor edge support. Zinus throws in a 100-night trial plus a 10-year warranty.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress (Queen) (small)

How can I save money on a mattress?

Buying a mattress online is cheaper than purchasing one at a significant markup in-store. For peace of mind, online mattress sellers include a trial period so you can try your new mattress risk-free and return it at little to no cost if it doesn’t work out.

The best mattress deals tend to come from brands such as Casper, Leesa, Tempur-Pedic, and Tuft & Needle. You can also find occasional discounts from stores like Wayfair and Overstock. These mattress sales can help you save as much as $500 on your purchase. Plus, many vendors like to throw in freebies, ranging from premium pillows to mattress covers.

Mattress sales typically crop up around major holidays, and we recently saw a parade of offers for sleep awareness week in mid-March. However, there are mattress deals to be found year-round – you can check some of those out below.

Grove Collaborative makes natural hand soap and dishwashing soap that actually gets me excited to do the dishes

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

grove collaborative soap

  • The soaps from online natural home brand Grove Collaborative make me look forward to doing the dishes.
  • Its soaps are made with safe, plant-based ingredients and come in refill packs, to be used with glass dispensers.

When I’m in the kitchen, things like an efficient, versatile pan and elegant, simple dinnerware excite me. So does a nice bottle of olive oil and protein-packed grains.

I could spend hours considering the features of cookware and food products, but I’ve probably only spent about 1/100th of the same time thinking about and picking out the soap in my kitchen.

Related Article Module: The best hand soaps of 2021

That attitude is changing, though. The growing popularity of natural beauty products has me looking more closely at the ingredients in all the other products I use in my daily life. There are few products I use more every day than soap.

Grove Collaborative soap review

Grove Collaborative, an online marketplace for the best natural home and personal care products, sent me its Autumn Fig Collection ($37.95, currently out of stock) last year, which includes gel dish soap and gel hand soap.

I took to these simple and common household supplies with surprising gusto. The scent played a big role – the sweet and rich fig fragrance managed to be bright and clean rather than cloying, and it was a refreshing change from the generically “fresh” scents of most soaps. To top it off, this fragrance is all-natural, made with a blend of essential oils and other plant-based ingredients.

These soaps cleaned as well as any other I’ve tried before, so it’s not really the effectiveness itself that impressed me. Instead, it was that they were made of safe, plant-based ingredients and promoted eco-friendly practices. The soaps come in refill packs rather than single-use plastic bottles and can be used with Grove Collaborative’s Glass Dish Soap Dispenser (16-ounce, $14.95) and Glass Hand Soap Dispenser (13.5-ounce, $13.95).

The dispensers are made from sturdy, partly recycled glass, so they’re reusable and refillable. Add a silicone sleeve and they won’t slip around on your sink top. Overall, they looked much sleeker than plastic bottles.

The Autumn Fig set also came with a natural soy candle, organic cotton tea towel, and European dish cloth, but it was the soaps that I loved the most because they elevated everyday cleaning rituals and made them safer for my body.

The bottom line

Overall, the gel dish soap and gel hand soap were a great introduction to Grove Collaborative’s standards of sustainability, quality ingredients, and beautiful products. I’ve since ordered again from the site for other home and personal care items like household cleaners and they were also top-quality.

While the Autumn Fig Collection and scent are no longer being sold, there are many similar soaps and collections that also contain natural ingredients and fragrances. You can find all hand soaps here and all dish soaps here.

The 6 best electric and stovetop tea kettles in 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

  • The best tea kettles are easy to fill and pour and bring water to a boil quickly and consistently.
  • Our top electric pick has various water temperature settings, a durable design, and an accessible price.
  • While our top stovetop pick features drip-free pouring, large capacity, and other special features.

There’s nothing more comforting than a hot cup of tea, but boiling water and safely pouring it into a mug or teacup is a surprisingly difficult task without a proper kettle. If you want to quickly and easily make boiling water – so you can relax with your tea sooner – you should invest in an electric or stovetop kettle.

Each style has its own merits, and the type you choose comes down to personal preference. Electric kettles are faster and you can heat water to the exact temperature your tea requires. Stovetop kettles have a more classic look and they often whistle loudly to grab your attention.

We’ve included the best of both in our guide, and you can read more about them here.

Here are the best tea kettles

The best electric kettle overall

best tea kettle

The Krups Cool Touch Adjustable Temperature Kettle heats water to the perfect temperature for brewing a variety of teas. It looks sleek and it costs much less than similar kettles.

Pros: Affordable, adjustable temperature settings, easy to use, attractive metal design

Cons: Some users experienced leaking

If you’re serious about your tea and you like to drink all different kinds of tea, you need an adjustable temperature kettle. This 1.7-liter kettle has six preset temperature settings to ensure that you never burn your green tea leaves with scalding hot water ever again.

It’s remarkably easy to select the temperature setting you need with pre-sets for delicate, green, white, oolong, and herbal teas. If you just want black tea, hit “boil” and watch the water go up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit within five minutes or less.

Believe it or not, using the right temperature is a big deal. Whenever I make green, white, or oolong tea with this kettle, I always set it to the right temperature instead of just hitting the button. The teas’ flavors come out in full force when brewed at the right temperature, and it’s so easy to select the right temperature on the Krups kettle.

The kettle automatically stops boiling when it hits the temperature you selected or if it runs dry. The kettle will even keep your water warm for a time before automatically shutting off to protect the heating element.

The kettle is made out of brushed stainless steel, and it looks gorgeous in my kitchen. The kettle jug is unattached, so you can pick it up and pour the water over your tea, oatmeal, or cooking pot without worrying about the length of the cord. The cord is concealed in the base and you can have it as short as you need it to be.

There’s a big button on the top of the kettle, which pops the lid open when pressed. The handle is big, comfortable, and always stays cool for easy handling and pouring. There is a water window as well, so you can check how much is in there. Krups put the anti-scale filter in the spout of the kettle, and you can remove it if need be.

The best stovetop kettle overall

OXO kettle

If you’re looking for a classic kettle that heats quickly, fills easily, and is simple to pour, the OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle is an excellent choice.

Pros: Wide bottom for quick heating, easy to fill and pour, large capacity

Cons: Can rust if not properly cleaned

The OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle has a traditional shape with its wide-bottom body that narrows at the top and a spout that draws from near the bottom of the kettle. More importantly, it has a strong whistle that alerts you when the water is boiling. Once the water boils, you open the spout cover, and the spout offers precise, drip-free pouring.

This kettle is made of high-grade stainless steel that is supposed to be rust-resistant. OXO recommends wiping the kettle down regularly to keep cooking oils from wearing away at the steel. The handle and spout have silicone touch points that resist heat for burn-free use. The handle folds to the side for storage or easy filling. The kettle holds 1.7 quarts, which is a good amount for a big pot of tea.

OXO offers a satisfaction guarantee, so the company will refund or replace your kettle if you are not satisfied for any reason.

The kettle also has a handle that folds out of the way, there’s good interior visibility, and it’s easy to fill thanks to its broad opening.

The best electric kettle on a budget

Secura kettle

The fast-heating Original Secura Stainless Steel Double Wall Electric Water Kettle is about the same price as plastic models, but it’s completely BPA-free.

Pros: Made of durable 100% stainless steel, keeps water warm, shuts off automatically, two-year warranty, easy to clean

Cons: No water gauge to see how much is inside, no variable temperature settings

Sometimes you just want a no-frills appliance that works and comes at an affordable price point. The Original Secura Stainless Steel Double Wall Electric Water Kettle fits the bill as a budget-friendly stainless steel electric kettle that boils water quickly.

It may not have fancy features like variable temperature settings or a water gauge, but it does offer a full stainless steel unibody design and 1500 watts of heating power. The kettle turns off automatically so you don’t boil a dry pot and damage the heating element.

Secura’s kettle is about the same price as cheap plastic ones, but it’s completely BPA-free and no plastic ever touches your water. The stainless steel inner wall is easy to clean after each use, so you can avoid mineral buildup over time. It has a double-wall construction, so the outer layer of plastic stays cool to the touch even as the water boils inside.

As long as you don’t need variable temperatures for tea or want to see the water level inside, the Secura kettle is a real winner — especially at this price point.

The best stovetop kettle on a budget

Cuisinart Kettle

Not only is the Cuisinart Aura Steel Stovetop Tea Kettle inexpensive, it also has a large two-quart capacity that is useful for much more than tea making.

Pros: Limited lifetime warranty, inexpensive, large capacity

Cons: Very loud whistle, can rust without proper cleaning

The Cuisinart Aura is a basic stovetop tea kettle, and sometimes that’s all you need. It gets the job done at a great price point, and if it breaks or rusts, it won’t break your heart.

The Cuisinart Aura features a two-quart-capacity solid stainless steel body — enough for eight cups of tea. The large capacity is also handy for boiling water for oatmeal, instant noodles, or anything else you need to quickly boil water for. This kettle notifies you that your water is boiling and ready with a whistle that increases in intensity. Sometimes it’s a bit too intense and you’ll find yourself running over to the stove to make it stop.

To pour the water, there’s a lever on the handle that you push to open the spout cap, ensuring you’ll never have to put your fingers near hot steam or boiling water to remove a cap. The handle is stationary and made of plastic, and the wide lid allows for easy refilling of the kettle.

To top it off, the entire setup is backed by a lifetime limited warranty.

The best high-end electric kettle

smeg electric kettle

The Smeg ’50s Retro-Style Electric Kettle adds style to any kitchen with its fun old school look, and it’ll heat your water quickly, too.

Pros: Fun 1950s-inspired design, stainless steel, automatic shut off, removable stainless steel filter, water level indicator, lots of color options

Cons: You’re paying for form more than function

Smeg’s ’50s Retro-Style Electric Kettle adds much-needed flair to the traditional kettle with its ’50s color palette and fun design aesthetic. You can get it in multiple color options, including cream, blue, green, red, black, chrome, and pink.

The kettle is made of stainless steel that’s powder-coated for added durability and protection from mineral buildup. If anything goes wrong, Smeg offers a one-year warranty.

Inside, there’s a removable, stainless steel limescale filter that you’ll need to clean every now and then to prevent too much of a deposit from building up. If you have hard water, you’ll have to clean the filter more often. It also has a water level window so you can check how much water is inside.

You are paying a premium for the design, but anyone who loves well-designed appliances or has a retro-inspired kitchen will love this kettle.

The best high-end stovetop kettle

kettle

If you are looking for a stylish tea kettle that heats quickly and stores easily, you will be hard-pressed to find a better option than the Le Creuset Enamel-on-Steel Zen Teakettle.

Pros: Heat-proof handle folds down, loud whistle, can be used with any stove type, including induction

Cons: Expensive, may dribble

The enamel-on-steel body of the Le Creuset Zen Teakettle makes it more resistant to rusting and thus more durable than its counterparts. The kettle holds 1-5/8 quarts of water and has an inverted bowl shape, which helps it heat quickly. The arched handle folds down for storage and filling, and the lid is wide for easy cleaning and filling.

Though the enamel of the kettle is “chip-resistant,” Le Creuset warns that repeated banging may damage the exterior enamel. The Zen Teakettle comes in ten colors, including Marseille, cherry, dune, and palm. Plus, each style comes with a limited five-year warranty.

Additional nice features are its heat-proof handle, loud whistle, and the fact that it can be used on any type of stovetop. However, the price is a bit steep for a kettle.

FAQs

Electric kettles vs. stovetop kettles — which should you buy?

Electric kettles: For real tea fanatics, it can be difficult to get just the right temperature water for your brew, and nuking H2O in the microwave is simply out of the question. That’s where electric kettles come in. They boil water faster than a watched pot on your stove, and the best ones even offer adjustable temperature settings to ensure that the water is just right for your delicate tea leaves.

You can also use electric kettles to boil water quickly for any cause. No matter your needs, it’s good to have a dedicated appliance in your kitchen that boils water quickly.

Stovetop kettles: The hardest part of making tea is remembering that you’re making tea. An electric kettle won’t notify you when the water is ready. Conversely, the whistle of the stovetop kettle demands attention more intensely — you can’t forget you’re making tea with something that whistles

What are kettles made of?

Most kettles are made of stainless steel, plastic, enamel-on-steel, or some combination of these materials. There are a few glass kettles available, but they receive low marks for performance from both buyers and experts.

Due to research linking bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates to cancer, many people are a little squeamish around kettles made out of plastic, especially since heating plastics can cause chemicals to leach into liquids or foods. However, the plastics that have been shown to cause cancer are used to make clear, hard containers or soft, flexible products. Tea kettles don’t fit into either of these categories.

But, if you are concerned about drinking hot water that has come into contact with plastic, make sure you choose a tea kettle that avoids this problem. Each of the kettles in our guide uses plastic sparingly, but never in the main part of the kettle.

What’s the best way to prevent rust or mineral buildup in your kettle?

Though the name may suggest otherwise, stainless steel tea kettles are susceptible to rusting. The best way to combat this is to regularly wash your kettle and dry it completely. If you do notice rust, fill your kettle with a 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water, boil it for a few minutes, empty it, and then wash your kettle per the manufacturer’s specifications. Rusting is less common with enamel-on-steel kettles.
