How to change your default browser on a Mac computer

young person using laptop at home at night
Switching your default web browser on a Mac computer only takes a minute.

  • You can change the default browser on Mac in System Preferences or your browser’s settings page.
  • Macs set Safari as the default browser, but you can change it to any other browser, like Chrome.
  • When you change your default browser, any links you click will open in your preferred browser.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Mac computers come with Apple’s Safari web browser pre-set as the default browser. This means that Safari will open automatically when you click certain links, even if you don’t want it to.

While Safari is a fast web browser and works well for most web needs, there are drawbacks to using it. One of these drawbacks is that for some websites, other browsers can be faster – for example, Google Apps work better in Google’s own browser, Chrome. Other websites might not work with Safari at all.

You can change your Mac’s default web browser through System Preferences or through the browser itself – here’s how to do both.

How to change the default browser on Mac from System Preferences

1. Open System Preferences by clicking the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your screen and selecting System Preferences in the drop-down.

Select “System Preferences” to open it.

2. In System Preferences, click General in the top-left corner.

3. On the General page, click the drop-down next to Default Web Browser.

4. All web browsers downloaded on your computer will appear in the drop-down list. Choose one to set it as your default. Now, whenever you click on a link to open it, it will automatically appear in your chosen browser.

How to change your default browser on Mac from the browser’s settings

There are dozens of different web browsers you could be using, and the exact method for setting them as your default browser is slightly different for each. Here, we’ll use Google Chrome as an example.

1. Open Chrome.

2. In the toolbar at the very top of your screen, click Chrome and select Preferences in the drop-down.

Under “Chrome,” select “Preferences.”

How to turn on incognito mode on your computer and phone to browse the web privately

Using phone
Incognito mode is an essential part of any web browser.

  • Incognito mode, also known as private browsing mode, stops your web browser from saving data about you as you browse.
  • While incognito mode is on, your internet history, search history, autofill information, and cookies will be disabled.
  • Incognito mode is available in every major web browser, and is perfect for doing work that needs to be kept private.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Incognito mode – also known as “private browsing mode” – is a sneakier way to use the internet.

When you browse the internet with incognito mode on, you won’t leave any trace on the device you’re using. Your browser won’t save your browsing or search engine history, and won’t remember what sites you’ve logged into – or even what your username and password is.

It’s great if you share your computer or phone with other people, since no one else will be able to see what you’ve done once you close the window.

Nonetheless, incognito mode is great for enforcing privacy on a busy or shared device. Here’s how to turn on incognito mode on your computer or phone.

How to activate incognito mode or private browsing on your Mac or PC

Incognito mode is a feature in every major browser, although each browser tends to give it a different name. When you activate a private session, a new window will open – this is your incognito window.

When you’re done, just close the window to exit incognito mode.

How to activate incognito mode or private browsing on your phone or tablet

The browser on your phone also comes with private browsing options. We’ll explain how to activate it using the default browsers for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.

How to group tabs in Google Chrome and organize your web browsing

Google Chrome logo on mac laptop screen
You can group tabs in Google Chrome to more easily manage your web pages.

  • You can group tabs in Google Chrome under a common, color-coded group title, making it easier to find and manage web pages.
  • To create a group, right-click any tab and choose “Add tab to new group.”
  • To minimize a tab group, click the group title; click it again to expand it.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

If you tend to keep a lot of tabs open in your Chrome browser, you know the challenges of working with many websites at once: your tab bar is cluttered and it’s often hard to find a page you know is open – somewhere – in your browser. Organizing your tabs into groups can streamline your browsing experience and make web pages easier to find and organize.

How to group tabs in Google Chrome

1. Right-click any tab in Chrome. In the dropdown menu, click “Add tab to new group.”

How_to_group_tabs_in_Chrome_OS 1
You can create a tab group by selecting the option from the right-click menu.

2. A new group will appear. Type a name for the group and select a color.

How_to_group_tabs_in_Chrome_OS 2
Give your tab a name and choose a color to make it more distinctive.

3. There are several ways to add new tabs to the group. Use whichever method is most convenient:

  • Click an existing tab and drag it into the group – you’ll know it’s in the group when it is outlined in the same color as the group you’ve created.
  • Right-click the tab group name and choose “New tab in group.”
  • Right-click any tab in the current group and click “New tab to the right.”

After you create your first tab, if you right-click a new tab, you will have the option to add it to the existing group or to make a new group. There are only eight colors to choose from, but there’s no practical limit to how many tab groups you can create in Chrome.

Once your group is created, you can minimize the group and move it around to better organize your web pages.

How_to_group_tabs_in_Chrome_OS 3
You can “hide” a group of tabs you don’t need until later.

To minimize the tabs, click the group title. All the tabs will “collapse” under the group title. This is a handy way to get a lot of related tabs out of the way while you are browsing.

To move a group of tabs around, click the group title and drag it to the left or right – all the tabs will move with it. You can do this when the group is minimized or expanded.

How to remove a tab from a group

If you want to remove a tab from a group, just click and drag the tab to the left or right. It’s out of the group when you see the colored outline disappear from the selected group.

How to delete a group

If you want to close all the tabs in a group at once, right-click the group title and choose “Close group.” All the tabs will close right away.

If you simply want to eliminate the group title but keep the tabs open, right-click and choose “Ungroup.”

How_to_group_tabs_in_Chrome_OS 4
Right-click a tab title to see additional options, such as ungrouping and closing the group.
