From humble beginnings, Jeff Sine built a career as an unorthodox banker who offered unvarnished advice and tamed unruly transactions for business moguls like Masayoshi Son and Rupert Murdoch. He defied the odds and built merchant bank The Raine Group into an investing empire in its own right.

Insider spoke with 10 people who have worked with Sine throughout his career, including senior bankers and clients. They explained how Sine became one of the world’s most influential dealmakers, the origins of his relationships with Masa and other key clients, and how he built a billion-dollar business.

Victoria’s Secret is finally raising its prices after years of extreme deals on inexpensive lingerie

Victoria's Secret
Promotions were a mainstay in Victoria’s Secret stores in the past.

  • Victoria’s Secret is cutting back on discounts and raising prices, according to a UBS report.
  • The firm has been criticized for its constant promotions, which are thought to erode profit margins.
  • Less discounting and higher prices are crucial for its turnaround effort, analysts say.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Victoria’s Secret is cutting back on deals and raising prices, and Wall Street is on board.

In a note to clients this week, UBS analysts Jay Sole and Mauricio Serna reiterated their recommendation to buy L Brands stock (the parent company behind Victoria’s Secret) and shared data that showed the level of promotions in Victoria’s Secret stores – which includes its Pink brand – was “declining at a surprisingly fast rate.”

UBS said the average price of an item listed on Victoria’s Secret’s website in May 2021 was $44, a huge 83% increase from May 2019.

It also found that a quarter of the products on its site were on sale in May 2021. This is still a substantial number but a notable improvement on the level of promotions over the past four years, which floated around the 40% to 60% mark.

“This boosts our confidence that the Victoria’s Secret turnaround is real,” these analysts said.

Unsatisfied customers

Victoria’s Secret has been strongly criticized by Wall Street in the past for constant promotions in stores. Analysts said these not only erode profit margins but also dampen the brand image and make it almost impossible to encourage customers to pay full price.

It wasn’t uncommon to see 40%-off sale signs littered around its stores between 2018 and 2019, and underwear deals such as five pairs of panties for $28. And major discounts of this kind are usually a sign that retailers are looking to clear unwanted inventory.

In 2019, the company promised to cut back on these promotions and tighten inventory levels but shortly after, discounts began to creep back in. At the time, UBS analysts said that price increases could be putting off customers, causing Victoria’s Secret to go back on its progress.

Victoria’s Secret’s price points have been a contentious subject as some shoppers previously said they felt the brand was still overpriced despite all the deals and discounts. And others said the quality of the clothing didn’t match these price points.

But Victoria’s Secret’s growth over the past few quarters – same-store sales were up 9% in the first quarter of the year versus 2019 and operating income, a measure of profitability, increased by $213 million or 665% – indicates that consumers are becoming comfortable paying more for its apparel and lingerie and that it has a better handle on its inventory levels.

Gabriella Santaniello, analyst and founder of retail research firm A-Line Partners, told Insider that the pandemic enabled Victoria’s Secret to have a “reset,” and cut back on its inventory, which has facilitated more full-price sales, she said.

More inclusive marketing pays off

The company has made considerable changes to its marketing in the past year. And experts say efforts to update its brand image, which critics previously said was out-of-date and oversexualized, have also helped to boost sales.

The marketing is “more subtle and appropriate,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, told Insider. It has “fewer sexual overtones and focuses more on more on celebrating women. That has resonated and has pulled some shoppers back to the brand,” he said.

Victoria's Secret
The Victoria’s Secret ad campaigns of 2021 look very different from the past.

And it matches up to what’s shown in stores, Santaniello said: “For example, they recently brought in plus-sized mannequins, which reflects their use of plus-sized models in their advertising.”

Still, the company needs to keep this “360 focus” long-term, she said. “They need to make sure they do not waiver because it will come across as inauthentic and that’s why they haven’t really been successful with the turnaround over these past few years.”

Your guide to Amazon Lightning Deals for Prime Day 2021

Best Lightning Deals of Amazon Prime Day 2020 2x1
  • Amazon Lightning Deals feature some of the best prices we see for tech items and home goods.
  • Amazon Prime Day 2021 will take place June 21 and 22, and it’ll be chock-full of them.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Amazon Prime Day’s Lightning Deals are aptly named – they’re available for a limited time and have limited stock. Once the timer ends or the deal is 100% claimed, you’ll have to add yourself to the waitlist in case more items become available – we’ve seen it happen.

Amazon Prime Day 2021 is slated to last June 21 through 22. Before then, we’ve answered some common questions about Lightning Deals. When the deal holiday rolls around, we’ll highlight the best ones available too.

What is an Amazon Lightning Deal?

Lightning deals are short-lived, limited-stock deals from Amazon. Not only are these deals set on a timer (usually anywhere from two to six hours), but they also end after they’ve been 100% claimed. If you manage to add one to cart, a timer starts during which you must check out, or lose the deal.

If the item runs out of stock before you can snag one, there’s still hope. You can hop on a waitlist afterward to snag the discount in case any shoppers change their minds, though it’s not guaranteed you’ll get one.

How to ‘watch’ a Lightning Deal

To stay on top of deal availability, you can visit the Upcoming Deals section on your desktop or in the free Amazon app (iOS, Android) to view all deals 24 hours before they go live.

Click “Watch this Deal” and you’ll receive push notifications on your phone when a deal is starting. This will be the best way to ensure you successfully grab a deal during the frenzy that is Amazon Prime Day.

prime day lightning deal

What happens if the deal I want is 100% claimed?

The deals can get snatched up pretty quickly, but there’s still hope even if a Lightning Deal has been 100% claimed.

You can click “Join the Waitlist” in order to potentially get the deal anyway. Lightning Deal purchases must be made within 15 minutes of adding an item to your cart. If the purchase isn’t completed within that time frame, then the deal will be made available to the next customer on the wait list. Joining the wait list won’t guarantee you’ll be able to purchase the deal, but it’s certainly worth a shot.

If you want to shop Amazon Prime Day Lightning Deals, the rest of Amazon Prime Day, and Early Access Deals, remember that you have to be an Amazon Prime member first. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial of Prime here.

Are Amazon’s Lightning Deals worth buying?

Lightning deals are some of the lowest prices we see for items and, therefore, absolutely worth buying.

What kinds of products are Lightning Deals?

Typically, Amazon Lightning Deals run the gamut from cleaning supplies to smart home gear. The product categories you’ll want to keep an eye out for are tech accessories, smart home tech, kitchen tools, and small home appliances. Items like USB-C hubs, indoor security cameras, Echo smart speakers, kitchen scales, and robot vacuums tend to see some of their best all-time prices in the form of lightning deals, but they go very fast.

Do I need to be an Amazon Prime Member to get a Lightning Deal?

Most times of the year, Lighting Deals are free game for Prime members and non-members alike. During Amazon Prime Day, however, they are Prime-member exclusive.

A Prime membership is $119 per year or $12 per month. Along with Amazon Prime Day 2021 access, members get tons of other perks like two-day and same-day shipping, Prime Video, Prime Music, and much more. If you’d like to sample the offerings before making the commitment, you can try Prime free for 30 days.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2021?

The massive savings event is slated to take place June 21 and 22. It will feature tons of short-lived Lightning Deals exclusive to Prime members.

  • Amazon Prime Day takes place June 21 and 22.
  • Best Buy hasn’t announced its competing Amazon Prime Day sale, but we expect it to.
  • Here’s what we expect from the major retailer during Amazon’s big day.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

While Target and Walmart have already announced competing Amazon Prime Day 2021 sales, Best Buy has yet to officially announce theirs. But, we expect it to repeat the trend from previous years.

Every year, Best Buy offers its own sale with comparable discounts and matching deals offered during Amazon Prime Day. Below, we’ve answered frequently asked questions and highlighted some of the best early deals you can snag now, ahead of June 21.

Is Best Buy holding a competing Amazon Prime Day 2021 sale?

Best Buy has yet to formally announce whether or not it will be holding a competing Amazon Prime Day sale, but we expect it will be.

Last year, Best Buy held a huge sale for the duration of Amazon Prime Day featuring plentiful and hefty discounts on audio, TVs, small kitchen appliances, and laptops. Chances are, that trend will repeat itself this year.

What deals will Best Buy have during Amazon Prime Day 2021?

When it comes to tech and small appliances, Best Buy has historically matched Amazon Prime Day’s all-time lows. We expect the same this year.

TVs, pressure cookers, video games, smart home gear, streaming devices, and headphones are categories that we typically see discounted to their best prices. You can also expect to see brands like Instant Pot, Dyson, Roku, Google Home, and JBL.

What are the benefits of shopping at Best Buy during Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day deals are exclusive to Prime Members – it’s one of the many benefits of subscribing. It’s free to sign up for 30 days if you’re new, but otherwise, you’ll need to sign up.

Best Buy’s sale, if it holds one, will likely be open to all shoppers online. You’ll also be able to pick up orders in-store if you’re in a time crunch.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2021?

Amazon Prime Day 2021 starts June 21 and ends June 22. Some other competing sales, like Target’s and Walmart’s, start the day before.

How do I prepare for Best Buy’s competing Amazon Prime Day sale?

Sign up for My Best Buy – it’s free to join. My Best Buy members get free shipping on everything, rewards points, plus early access to some sales year-round. Even if there are no member-exclusive deals from Best Buy this year, it’s still an easy way to nab free shipping.

What other stores are holding competing Amazon Prime Day sales?

Target and Walmart have already announced their own Prime Day 2021 sales, both of which start before Prime Day itself. Target’s Deal Days event lasts from June 20 to 22 and Walmart’s Deals for Days event lasts from June 2o to 23.

Kohl’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, The Home Depot, and Old Navy also held sales during Amazon Prime Day, but haven’t announced anything as of writing.

The best Amazon Prime benefits

In addition to free next-day or two-day shipping on millions of items, Amazon Prime can you save money on essentials like groceries, diapers, and baby food – not to mention trips to the store. It’s also worth noting that Amazon now accepts SNAP EBT on qualifying grocery items.

With access to a massive library of TV shows, movies, and original content through Prime Video, membership can also help you cut the cord if you’re still paying for cable or satellite TV. The cost of Prime with all of its features also matches that of other major streaming services alone.

Amazon Prime Day 2021, Amazon’s big two-day sale is another major benefit of having Amazon Prime. Members will have exclusive access to thousands of exclusive deals, many of which are just as good or better than Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Amazon Prime Day 2021 deals land on June 21 and 22 this year. It’s going to be an event of equally grand scale compared to previous years, filled with rare, short-lived sales on popular items including streaming devices, smart home speakers and displays, robot vacuums, and more.

Best Buy joins Walmart and Target in closing stores on Thanksgiving, a blow to Black Friday

Best Buy
A shopper buys movies at a Best Buy Inc. store on November 22, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.

  • Best Buy confirmed it is closing all stores for Thanksgiving. Walmart and Target are doing the same.
  • Best Buy said shoppers can continue shopping for deals online, however.
  • Online shopping and year-round deals have meant that Black Friday is losing significance.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Best Buy is closed for Thanksgiving.

The electronics retailer confirmed to Insider Wednesday that all of its stores will be closed for the US national holiday for the second year running. Walmart and Target also announced this year that their stores would close for the holiday.

Thanksgiving had become a popular shopping day for customers who wanted an early jump on deals for Black Friday (which falls the day after Thanksgiving). At some stores, customers would even wait in line overnight to be first inside when the doors opened. But, with the growth of online shopping, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, stores are increasingly taking a more relaxed approach to the day.

“Ultimately, consumers really want convenience and they want to get their item and get out of the store quickly. They don’t want to wait in long lines, they don’t want to wait for a store to open anymore,” Josh Elman, senior specialist at Nasdaq Advisory Services, previously told Insider’s Kate Taylor.

Moreover, year-round deals mean that Black Friday and the shopping days around it are losing significance.

“It has become less of a physical event and more of a virtual event in the last five to six years,” Dave Marcotte, a senior vice president at Kantar Retail, told Insider, commenting on Black Friday in 2020. It doesn’t have the same “immediacy” as before, he said.

In a statement to Insider, Best Buy said it is making it more convenient for shoppers to buy online – by expanding curbside pickup options and offering faster delivery services.

The best Amazon Prime Day 2021 early deals on robot vacuums, cordless vacuums, and upright vacuums

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

prime day 2021 best corded cordless robot vacuum deals
Cordless vacuums from brands like Shark and Hoover always go on sale during Prime Day.

Amazon Prime Day 2021 is happening from June 21 through June 22 and if you’re in the market for a vacuum, it’s a good idea to hold out until then to buy a new one. Every year, the sales event features significant deals on robot vacuums, upright vacuums, cordless stick vacuums, and handheld vacuums.

There’s already a great deal on our pick for the best robot vacuum overall, the Roborock S6. It’s currently at an all-time low price of $380, down from the usual price we see of $600.

Amazon has also confirmed that there will be discounts on robot vacuums from Shark and Bissell.

In 2020, brands like iRobot, Shark, and Hoover offered discounts of up to $200. We also saw discounts of up to $150 off a couple of Dyson cordless models.

If you haven’t figured out what vacuum you need yet, check our guides to the best vacuum cleaners, robot vacuums, cordless vacuums, and budget vacuum cleaners to help narrow down your search. Each of them has been recently updated with our latest fully tested picks and guidance on how to shop for the best vacuum for your needs.

To shop Prime Day deals, you’ll need to be a member. Sign up for a free 30-day trial to gain access to all of the deals and many other perks.

Retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will also have competing vacuum deals that are comparable if not better than Amazon’s deals. Walmart’s Deals for Days event runs from June 20 through June 23, while Target’s Deal Days event runs from June 20 through June 22. We’ll be covering these competing sales on Prime Day as well. And no, you don’t need a special membership for these retailers’ deals – just for Amazon Prime.

The best early Prime deals on vacuums that you can shop right now

S6 Robot Vacuum (medium, Preferred: Amazon)S6 Robot Vacuum (medium, Preferred: Walmart)

What vacuum deals to expect during Amazon Prime Day

There will be deals on all kinds of vacuums, whether you’re looking for a traditional upright vacuum, lightweight cordless vacuum, or time-saving robot vacuum.

We’re expecting vacuum deals from most major vacuum brands, including iRobot, Shark, Hoover, Dyson, Eufy, and Bissell. Amazon already confirmed there will be deals on the Shark and Bissell brands. Amazon has released some deals a couple of weeks early, which we’ve shared above.

What vacuum deals we saw last year

Though they’re not currently on sale, these are actual vacuums that were discounted last year. The same or similar models may be on sale during Prime Day 2021.

How we vet deals on vacuums on Amazon Prime Day

We see deals on vacuums all year long, but the discounts are the most significant on Prime Day and Cyber Weekend. We use historical price data to compare how the newest deals compare to those of past years. We’ll recommend the deal if the new deal is the same or better than in previous years.

In addition, we like to recommend deals on the best products from our buying guides. At their normal price, they already provide great value and top performance. We want to help you get even more value out of these high-quality products by highlighting any applicable Prime Day deals.

For vacuums specifically, we also take into account whether the deal includes additional attachments or bundled offerings that aren’t ordinarily included.

Learn more about how we vet deals and terms like “MSRP” and “street price” you might see in our deals roundups.

The best deals on corded upright vacuums

Corded upright vacuums are good for large homes and long cleaning sessions where you don’t want to worry about battery life. They tend to be powerful and have large dustbins to collect lots of dust and particles. They’re also more affordable than cordless and robot vacuums. Shark, Bissell, and Hoover often discount their corded upright vacuums on Prime Day.

The best deals on cordless vacuums

Cordless vacuums are very convenient and usually lighter and more compact than corded vacuums. The downside is you might need to charge them often depending on the size of your space. Dyson cordless vacuums are notoriously expensive, but a few models are usually on sale during Prime Day. You’ll also see deals on cordless vacuums that are already pretty affordable, like those from Tineco and Hoover.

The best deals on robot vacuums

Robot vacuums, after some initial set-up, are mostly hands-off and do all the cleaning work for you. Keep in mind they can’t climb stairs (yet) so they’re best for one-story homes. We’ll be on the lookout for deals from iRobot, Eufy, Roborock, Ecovacs, Moosoo, and more.

You can read more about the different types of vacuums and their pros and cons in these buying guides:
