3 secrets that America’s richest family dynasties use to hang onto their money, from a report on their breakaway wealth during the pandemic

  • A new report from the Institute for Policy Studies dives into how they amass and keep their fortunes.

America’s richest family dynasties had a lucrative pandemic year.

The top 10 richest saw their net worths grew by a median 25%, while family dynasties’ wealth grew at a rate 10 times greater than that of a typical family, according to a new report from the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies (IPS).

The thing is many of these are true dynasties, with wealth dating back much further than relatively recent upstart billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. Thirteen of the top 20 wealthiest families were in the top 20 in 1983.

“Dynastically wealthy families remain wealthy for the long haul,” the report’s authors write. “The ranks of America’s dynastic fortunes have remained largely unchanged for decades, and are becoming increasingly persistent over time.”

The methods by which America’s wealthiest individuals hang onto their wealthy – without paying much in taxes -have become increasingly clear in the past few weeks. A bombshell ProPublica report showed just how little America’s billionaires paid in taxes proportional to their wealth; all of those methods are legal – and have been known by experts for years – but the exposure of the numbers themselves could kickstart tax reform.

Titled “Silver Spoon Oligarchs,” the report looks at at the top 50 dynastically wealthy families from Forbes’ inaugural ranking of America’s wealthiest clans, published in December 2020, as well as data from the Federal Reserve‘s Survey of Consumer Finance.

The IPS report breaks down the main ways family dynasties ensure their wealth lasts for so long, and here are three of the most notable ones.

(1) Fight against tax increases by pouring money into PACs and lobbying

The report notes that taxes on America’s wealthiest have sunk over the past few decades as wealth ballooned at the top. In fact, today’s wealthy Americans pay just one-sixth the rate of their 1953 counterparts.

Family dynasties may have held onto their own coffers through everything like funding lobbying efforts, donating money to candidates who are anti-tax, or even setting up their own corporate PACs.

“In-house PACs ensure that corporations are in an excellent position to influence public policy in ways that are favorable to them,” the report said.

(2) Give just the right amount to charity

There’s also an art to charitable giving, according to the IPS report: “Today’s family dynasties understand that if they want to remain at the top, they must not give too many of their assets to charity.”

The dynasties need to strike the right balance between giving and retaining their assets (presumably so they can continue to grow). For instance, the report notes that only four members from Forbes’ top 50 families have signed on to the Giving Pledge, where billionaires pledge to give away half of their wealth to charity either during their lifetimes or at death.

And, as Insider’s Mattathias Schwartz reported, some of the signatories of that pledge are moving slowly in disbursing that money. One mechanism that the wealthiest use for donations are donor-advised funds (DAFs); as Schwartz reported, philanthropists who utilize those funds can put assets in there, immediately see a tax write-off, and then actually disburse the funds in it whenever they want.

As the IPS report says, dynastic families funneling giving “through closely-held private family foundations
provides them with not only an immediate tax deduction, but also the ability to maintain family control over those charitable assets into perpetuity.”

(3) Set up trusts and family offices

Dynastic families are increasingly setting up family offices to maintain and build their wealth, and shore it up for generations to come. According to the IPS report, about half of the nearly 10,000 family offices around the world were founded in the last 15 years.

Family offices are infamously secretive entities devoted to handling wealth. They’ve drawn attention in recent months after the fall of Archegos Capital Management – which reportedly lost $8 billion – as it was technically structured as a family office, according to Insider’s Harry Robertson. As Insider’s Hayley Cuccinello and Rebecca Ungarino reported, family offices were gearing up for new regulations following Archegos.

Another mechanism the wealthiest use are dynasty trusts. Those are long-term trusts, as Insider’s Hillary Hoffower reported, and they have transfer taxes at their creation – essentially meaning they never incur estate or gift taxes when beneficiaries receive money from the trust.

“Because the super-wealthy are avoiding or reducing their taxes, they are shifting the obligations to pay for society’s investments onto lower and middle-income households,” the IPS authors write. “Dynasty trusts also entrench existing levels of wealth inequality and facilitate the formation of dynastic concentrations of hereditary wealth and power.”

A smart outlet to control with Alexa or Google Assistant

Monoprice wall outlet

Monoprice Recessed Wall Tap, available at Amazon, $31

This probably sounds like a boring gift, but hear me out. You can stick this gadget into any regular outlet to make that outlet into an advanced smart outlet. Any device you plug in, be it a lamp, fan, air conditioner, or anything else, becomes a smart device that you can turn on and off using Alexa and Google Assistant. The wall tap includes two outlets and two USB ports, all of which can be controlled separately.

An affordable multicolor smart bulb

Kasa bulb

Kasa Smart Light Bulb, Multicolor, available at Amazon, $14.99

TP Link’s Kasa smart bulbs are some of the best cheap smart devices you can get. They work with Alexa and Google Assistant, and can create all sorts of cool effects. You can also incorporate them into scenes and routines, and set them to timers and schedules.

A portable charger with enough power for multiple gadgets

Elecjet_PowerPie

Elecjet PowerPie Power Bank, available at Amazon, $49.99

A power bank is an excellent gift for anyone who travels or spends a lot of time out and about. The Elecjet PowerPie is our current pick for the best power bank overall, and it’s available for just under $50. It supports the Power Delivery 3.0 standard via its USB-C port and the Quick Charge 3.0 standard via its USB-A port, so it can accommodate a variety of smartphones and laptops. And thanks to its massive 20,000mAh of capacity, it can provide plenty of juice.

A streaming stick for an entertainment upgrade

amazon fire tv stick 2020

Fire TV Stick Lite with Alexa Voice Remote, available at Amazon, $29.99

Roku Streaming Stick+, available at Amazon, $39.00

If you’re not sure what to buy someone, a streaming stick is usually a safe bet. The Fire TV Stick Lite is one of the cheapest ones out there, and it will allow your friend to search for content with their voice (using the included voice remote) and access hundreds of streaming services, including Hulu, Netflix, Disney Plus, and (of course) Amazon Prime Video. This model supports up to 1080p playback with HDR. On the downside, the device is currently missing support for Peacock.

The Roku Streaming Stick+ is a bit more expensive than the Fire TV Stick, but if you’ve got a larger budget, it has a simpler interface and a few apps that are missing from Amazon’s platform, like Peacock. This model also steps things up from HD to 4K streaming. The included remote has dedicated buttons for a few popular apps, along with a microphone for voice search.

An ideal gadget for tech-savvy campers

FosPower battery

FosPower Emergency Solar Hand Crank Portable Radio, LED Flashlight, USB Charger and SOS Alarm, available at Amazon, $29.99

Yes, you read that correctly: This is a radio, flashlight, charger, and SOS alarm in one. Anyone who enjoys hiking or other outdoor activities will love this device, which can be powered by solar power, a hand crank, AAA batteries, or a rechargeable power bank. Oh, and it has a USB port to charge other devices as well.

A Bluetooth keyboard that swaps between devices with ease

Logitech K380 keyboard

Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard, available at Best Buy, $29.99

This is our favorite Bluetooth keyboard and with good reason: it can remember up to three device connections at a time, it works with both Windows and Mac operating systems, and at just 10.9 x 4.9 inches, it’s compact enough to easily carry in your purse or backpack. Your friend can whip this out and type whenever inspiration strikes, whether they’re in bed, at a coffee shop, on the bus, or anywhere else.

A Bluetooth mouse that’s great for remote work and travel

Logitech mouse

Logitech M557 Bluetooth Mouse, available at Amazon, $37.08

A Bluetooth mouse makes a great gift, and this tiny one is our favorite. It’s completely wireless — there’s no receiver — so your friend can just whip it out and start clicking without fiddling with their computer’s USB port. They can also customize the device’s six buttons to map to the tasks they value the most. Our reviewer Brandt Ranj liked the M557 so much that he bought a second one to use at work.

A portable Bluetooth speaker with touch controls

DOSS Speaker

Doss Soundbox Touch Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, available at Amazon, $29.99

You might not expect a small, portable speaker to sound very good. But the Doss SoundBox Touch, one of the top-selling speakers on Amazon weighs just 1.4 pounds and still delivers excellent audio with very full bass. It also features up to 20 hours of battery life, and a Bluetooth range of 33 feet so you’re unlikely to lose connection.

A tasteful leather phone-carrying case

Leatherology bag

Long Crossbody Phone Pocket, available at Leatherology, $40

As smartphones increase in size, it’s becoming more of a pain to carry them around, especially for folks who often wear clothing without pockets. That’s why our reviewers recommend Leatherology’s Long Crossbody Phone Pocket, a stylish carrying case for your phone. It has an exterior front pocket to hold other stuff as well.

Note: Make sure that your recipient’s phone will fit, as this pocket is only guaranteed to hold iPhones and a few Samsung models.

A light backpack to fit your laptop and whatever else you need

Kopack backpack

Kopack Lightweight Laptop Backpack, available at Amazon, $39.99

This is the best backpack to give a tech enthusiast — full stop. It has a laptop pouch, a lockable compartment for valuables, a USB port to charge devices, and a whopping 17 interior pockets for cords, chargers, and other accessories. It’s also water-resistant, so your stuff won’t get ruined in the rain.

A clock with an oversized alarm for late-sleepers

Sonic Bomb alarm clock

Sonic Bomb Extra-Loud Dual Alarm Clock, available at Amazon, $33.07

This is a perfect gift for the many, many people you probably know who have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. This device will use pulsating lights, extra-loud noises, and a 12-volt bed shaker to make sure they’re out the door on time.

An automatic feeder or water fountain to give pet owners a break

Pet Safe feeder

PetSafe 5-Meal Pet Feeder, available at Amazon, $43.99

PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Water Fountain, available at Amazon, $44.95

This is a great gift for a pet owner (or for your pet). It’s a battery-powered feeder that automatically dispenses up to five pet meals on a schedule that you set. If you’re out of the house for a few days, you’ll know your pet is taken care of.

PetSafe also makes a mini fountain that constantly filters and dispenses clean running water. It’ll ensure that your cat has access to a fresh drink at all times, even when you’re not home to refill their bowl.

A Bluetooth controller for games of all-types

8Bitdo

8Bitdo SN30 Pro Wireless Bluetooth Controller, available at Amazon, $44.99 [Save an extra 5% with a coupon]

8Bitdo controllers are light and easy to hold, and they work with phones, computers, and Nintendo Switch consoles. They make a great, affordable gift for any game-loving friend or relative, but especially those who enjoy retro gaming. While the wireless Sn30 looks old-fashioned, it has all the buttons you need for most modern games, including dual analog sticks.

Studio quality headphones

Audio Technicia headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, available at Amazon, $49.00

These are our reviewer’s favorite cheap headphones for their excellent sound quality, comfortable design, and effective noise-isolation. Note that as studio headphones, these are best suited for use with a computer, TV, or home-entertainment system, rather than a smartphone. They’re attached to a sturdy 3.5mm cable, and come with a 6.3mm adapter for larger audio equipment.

A smart speaker for household tasks and convenience

google nest mini 2

Google Nest Mini, available at Walmart, $37.49

Echo Dot with Alexa, available at Amazon, $49.99

A Google Nest Mini is a great gift for anyone looking to get started on a smart home, or anyone who just wants a nice smart speaker. It sounds decent for its small size, and it’s got a futuristic design for a modern home. If your friend or loved one hasn’t used a voice AI before, they’ll love playing around with Google Assistant and discovering everything it can do.

Like the Google Nest Mini, Amazon’s Echo Dot is another great way to introduce a friend to smart home tech and voice assistants. The new fourth-generation model features an updated spherical design, but the puck-shaped third-generation version is still available if you’re looking for an even more affordable gift option.

A visually stunning keyboard built for gamers

Corsair keyboard

Corsair K55 RGB Gaming Keyboard, available at Amazon, $49.88

Any gamer or aspiring-gamer friends will appreciate the gift of a good gaming keyboard. This is our reviewer’s favorite budget option for its full RGB lighting and solid, well-built keys. It also has six programmable buttons which they can customize to their gaming style. Though the K55 is only $49, it has the look and feel of a much more expensive RGB device.

A white noise machine to help wind down before bed

LectroFan

LectroFan White Noise Machine, available at Amazon, $41.95

If you have a friend or relative who has trouble sleeping, you need to buy them this white noise machine, which plays ten different types of fan sounds. You might be skeptical, but trust me: The LectroFan’s fan sounds are actually the most calming ambient noise I have ever heard. (For more traditional users, it plays 10 levels of white noise as well). I gave this device to an insomniac friend this summer, and he still uses it every night.

A 2.1 speaker system to bring the bass with a subwoofer

Logitech speakers

Logitech Z313 Speaker System, available at Amazon, $32.97

For any friend who is looking to replace their computer speakers (or buy their first set), Logitech’s Z313 is the best budget option. The system includes two stereo speakers and a subwoofer, and while they won’t deliver premium sound, they’re head and shoulders above any monitor’s built-in speakers.

I paid $150 to try the popular weight-loss app backed by investors like Tony Xu and Scooter Braun. It taught me better eating habits, but keeping the weight off was harder than expected.

Health Weight Loss Fork Food
Noom uses science and psychology to promote healthy eating and living.

  • Noom is a weight-loss app that uses a psychology-based approach to change your eating habits.
  • One freelancer tried Noom for over 8 months to shed some pounds and prevent pandemic weight gain.
  • She lost seven pounds and now implements the healthy habits she learned every day.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Like many people, I’ve been losing and gaining the same 10 pounds every few years.

In my latest attempt to lose weight, I turned to the Noom app. The TV and Facebook ads feature statements like, “Just 10 minutes a day keeps the weight off” and testimonials from people who claim they worked out every day for a year and only lost 10 pounds, but with Noom they lost 30 pounds.

Noom promises to be life-changing, easy to follow, and different from other weight-loss plans. For instance, on Noom, no food is forbidden, and its ads reinforce this concept by showing a woman grabbing a brownie while the scale flips to a lower and lower weight.

Although it seems like Noom is a newcomer to the weight-loss game, the company was founded more than a decade ago, in 2008, by two best friends, Saeju Jeong and Artem Petakov.

Last year, the company reported it had over 45 million users. A 2016 study published in Scientific Reports found that about 78% of the 35,921 participants who used Noom lost weight over an 18-month period, and a 2017 study published in the Journal of Health Communications found that Noom appeared to help people lose weight over a six-month period.

In 2019, Noom raised $58 million, with investors including Sequoia Capital, Groupe Arnault’s tech arm Aglaé Ventures, Jan Koum, cofounder of WhatsApp, Tony Xu, cofounder of DoorDash, Josh Kushner, cofounder of Oscar Health, Scooter Braun, founder of SB Projects, and Samsung Ventures. It’s now the largest venture-backed digital weight-loss startup, having raised $115 million to date, a company spokesperson told Insider’s Patricia Kelly Yeo in April.

I signed up in October 2019. It cost about $150 to test out for eight months.

noom lisa
My “new normal.”

After completing a short quiz about my weight, height, desired weight-loss goal, and daily eating and exercise habits, I received my “customized” plan with a budget of 1,200 calories a day – a standard recommendation for women trying to shed a few pounds.

Noom broke my 1,200-calorie budget into three categories:

  • Green – essentially vegetables and fruits, to be eaten generously
  • Yellow – multigrain bread, lean proteins, beans, and brown rice, to be eaten in moderation
  • Red – the brownie in the ad, cheeses, pizza, anything fried, all to be eaten sparingly

Essentially, the food budget encourages participants to eat more protein, fruits, and vegetables and fewer fats and processed foods.

Other key daily aspects of Noom included recording your weight, tracking your food intake and exercise, drinking at least nine cups of water, and spending 10 minutes completing interactive readings and quizzes about food and cravings on the app.

One of your first assignments is to declare your “Super Goal” and “Ultimate Why” for losing weight, then envision how your life will be different once you reach your goal.

Super Goal.PNG
My Noom “Super Goal.”

I imagine that this is a powerful exercise for someone who has more than 10 pounds to lose.

In fact, I’ve noticed that the people who have the most weight to lose have the most success with Noom. But it felt strange to me because, while 10 pounds would help me feel more confident, it probably wouldn’t be life-changing for me.

I’m in a Facebook group for Noom users that I joined in January 2020, and the transformational photos people post constantly amaze me. It’s not uncommon to see photos of people who have lost 100 pounds or more. Most people post about their successes and their challenges, particularly when they find the scale is creeping up. But I was more of a lurker than a poster or commenter.

I started Noom before the COVID-19 pandemic, when I thought we’d be going to two weddings and my daughter’s high school graduation in 2020, so losing 10 pounds for these events were my Big Why. Then the pandemic hit and my Big Why became my desire to not gain 20 pounds during lockdown.

Initially, I found the daily readings and quizzes really insightful.

Everything is written in easy-to-digest blurbs and based on science and psychology. There are daily quizzes to help you retain the information and opportunities to read and reflect, and then add your own thoughts and experiences.

For instance, a lesson on stress eating ends with two questions: “What is your stressor?” and “What is your stress response?”

10 mindful eating tips.PNG
10 mindful eating tips.

The app invites you to list all the possible ways in which you can prevent yourself from stress eating. My list of ways to intervene included taking deep breaths, going for a quick walk, drinking a big glass of water, and calling or texting a friend. I can honestly say that none of these methods have worked for me.

There’s also a lot of emphasis on mindful eating, including how to assess how hungry you are before you start eating, ways to slow down your meal, and how to tell when you’re full.

Noom also arms you with ways to handle social situations and family members who expect you to clean your plate.

For instance, the app explains why we tend to eat more when we’re out to dinner with friends and why we might arrive at the restaurant determined to order a salad but then change to a burger when everyone else at the table orders one.

And, if your mother, grandmother, or aunt insists that you eat the special meal they made for your visit, Noom has a great list of responses like “I can’t make it work in my plan,” and “Me and [insert food] aren’t on speaking terms.”

Despite what the ads say, Noom also emphasizes exercise.

Food pusher strategies.PNG
Food pusher strategies.

There’s an initial goal to walk 3,000 steps a day, and after a week you’re encouraged to walk 10,000 steps each day and to add yoga, weights, and other workouts.

Noom pairs every participant with a goal specialist, who checks in with you every week. Each week you set a new goal – such as eating a new vegetable with every meal or exercising four times a week – and then the goal specialist checks to see if you succeeded.

If you didn’t, the specialist asks you open-ended questions that are similar to the reflections in the readings about what you could have done more of or differently.

Those open-ended questions definitely got on my nerves. Like most dieters, I know what I need to do – I just don’t always follow through.

It’s true that no food is off limits. However, losing weight wasn’t as easy as Noom promised.

One of the best lessons I learned is I can eat anything I want in moderation, and just because I gave into my craving for a bag of potato chips at lunch doesn’t mean I should give myself permission to eat an entire pizza and then a pint of ice cream for dinner.

noom lisa
How to assess your hunger.

I was on Noom for eight months and lost seven pounds. About three months after I went off Noom, I gained a few pounds back, so I decided to go back on Noom, hoping to lose six more pounds (the three pounds I’d regained and the three pounds I didn’t lose the first time) but nothing happened the second time I joined – I didn’t gain weight and I didn’t lose any either.

I asked health and fitness coach and weight-loss specialist Candice McDaniel why I was struggling to lose six pounds when I see photos of people who have dropped 100 pounds.

“Losing 10 pounds on a diet plan versus losing 50 to 100 pounds is harder because of how close you already are to a healthy weight,” she said. “When you have 50 to 100 pounds to lose, you don’t need to make very many changes to your diet to start seeing results. Typically at that weight, you can try following a diet plan, and even if you aren’t perfect, you’ll start seeing progress quickly. But people who only have about 10 pounds to lose have to be a lot more vigilant and follow the program very closely to see results.”

While I no longer use Noom, I’ve managed to keep off four of the seven pounds I lost and retained many of the healthy habits I learned.

For instance, I have a fruit or vegetables with every meal, I don’t eat when I’m bored (though I do still eat when I’m stressed), I exercise every day, I write down everything I eat each day, and if I slip up and have a bag of chips or a slice of cake at lunch, I don’t go whole hog in the evening. Now if I could only lose five more pounds …

How to use Night mode on your iPhone to take better photos in the dark

Apple Iphone 11
Night mode lets you take great iPhone photos in the dark.

  • Night mode is a feature on the iPhone 11 and 12 that makes photos taken in the dark look better.
  • Unlike Portrait or Video modes, Night mode will turn on automatically in low-light environments.
  • Night mode lets more light into your iPhone’s camera, making dark photos brighter and clearer.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Gone are the blurry snaps of faces hidden in shadow after the sun goes down. With Night mode, iPhone photographers can take great photos at any time of day.

Night mode lengthens the exposure time on your photos, letting in more light and making pictures look brighter. And unlike the iPhone’s other camera modes, you don’t need to choose between a Night mode photo and a normal one – Night mode turns on and adjusts automatically in low-light environments.

Which iPhone models have Night mode?

To use Night mode, you’ll need an iPhone 11 (including Pro and Pro Max), or iPhone 12 (including the Mini, Pro, and Pro Max).

If you want to use Night mode with the front-facing “selfie” camera, in portrait mode, or with a time-lapse video, you’ll need one of the iPhone 12 models.

iPhone 11 Pro Night Mode
Night mode improves photos taken in the dark.

It’s not confirmed whether future iPhone models will have Night mode too, but it’s more than likely that they will. There’s also a chance that it’ll come to other Apple devices with cameras, like the iPad or Mac.

How to use Night mode on your iPhone

Night mode will turn on automatically when you’re trying to take a picture in low-light environments. You’ll see the small symbol near the top left, which looks like a moon, turn yellow. A time like “1s” or “5s” will show up near the moon symbol when it’s activated, which signifies the exposure time (or the length of time the camera lets light in before taking the picture).

How to get night mode on iPhone camera 1
Tap the Night mode icon to adjust its settings.

When Night mode is activated, press the round shutter button to take a photo as you normally would. Hold the camera as still as possible until the exposure completes – this takes a little getting used to, but to get a good night picture, you need to give your camera time to take in light.

How to get night mode on iPhone camera 4
Hold the camera still while you’re taking the Night mode photo.

How to adjust the capture time of Night mode photos

When Night mode is activated on your iPhone, the moon icon will display an exposure time next to it, which is how much time it’ll take to capture a good Night mode picture. But you can adjust this timer manually if you want the picture to be quicker or higher quality.

1. When you’re in the camera app in low-light conditions and Night mode has been activated with a suggested time, tap the Night mode icon.

2. A slider will appear below the frame – move it to the right for more light or left for less light. For more light, there will only be one option: “Max.” This lets the camera take as much time as it needs to produce the best possible Night mode shot. You can also turn off Night mode completely here.

How to get night mode on iPhone camera 6
Choose how intense the Night mode effect will be.

3. Take the picture as normal, while holding the camera still.

AirPods with regular charging case deals

airpods pro wireless charging
It’s easy to check what version your AirPods are running.

AirPods with Charging Case (medium, Preferred: Micro Center)

The original and standard AirPods with Charging Case are the base and cheapest AirPods you can buy. You get the regular AirPods wireless earbuds and a charging case that charges via a Lightning cable, the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

The AirPods have a five-hour battery life, and the case stores 24 hours of battery charge. A quick 15-minute charge in the case gives them an extra three hours of listening time. These are not sweat- or water-resistant – you’ll have to check out the AirPods Pro below if that’s important to you. You can read the full AirPods review here.

Contrary to what MSRP would like you to think, AirPods typically only sell for $129 across online retailers – a good $30 less than listed. During Black Friday and Cyber Monday we saw them fall as low as $99, but that kind of promotion is rare. Below are the best deals available right now.

AirPods with Wireless Charging Case deals

airpods next to iphone

AirPods with Wireless Charging Case (medium, Preferred: Target)

The AirPods with Wireless Charging Case are identical to the 2nd-gen AirPods with Charging Case, except the charging case can be charged wirelessly as well as via a Lightning cable. That means you can charge the wireless charging case on a wireless charging pad that uses the Qi wireless charging standard. Thankfully, that means you can charge the AirPods’ wireless charging case on pretty much any wireless charging pad, including the pad you already use for your iPhone, if you already use one. You can read the full AirPods with Wireless Charging Case review here.

Though they’re listed for more, the typical price for the Wireless Charging Case AirPods is considerably lower than suggested, as is the trend with Apple gear. Typical price is more commonly $160 across online retailers. During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we saw them fall as low as $140; it’s unlikely they’ll drop that low again outside of short-lived discounts from one or two retailers. Below, we’ve listed the best deals available now.

AirPods Pro deals

Airpods BF

AirPods Pro (medium, Preferred: Amazon)AirPods Pro (Refurbished) (medium, Preferred: Best Buy)

The AirPods Pro are Apple’s highest-end AirPods, and they’re also our pick for the best wireless earbuds for Apple fans. They have a shorter stem than the original AirPods design, and they have an in-ear design that fits more securely in more ears using tips of three different sizes – if you’ve ever had difficulty keeping Apple’s earbuds in your ear, these are the solution. The wireless charging case is also wider than the non-pro charging cases.

Despite their smaller size, they come with active noise cancellation, and they sound a little better than the regular non-pro AirPods. Battery life with noise cancellation enabled isn’t as long as the regular AirPods, but it’s still pretty good (4.5 hours versus 5 hours). If the AirPods Pro run out of battery, a quick 15-minute charge in the case gives you an extra three hours of listening time. The AirPods Pro come with a wireless charging case that holds a 24-hour total charge for the AirPods.

The AirPods Pro are also sweat and water-resistant, whereas the regular non-pro AirPods are not. You can read the full AirPods Pro review here.

A pair is listed for $249, but typical price more commonly hovers around $220 across online retailers like Walmart and Costco. We’ve seen them drop lower during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you need a pair now, don’t settle for paying any more than $220. Below, we’ve listed the best deals available now.

AirPods Max deals

AirPods Max being worn

Airpods Max (medium)

If you’re an Apple aficionado looking for the best audio you can find, the AirPods Max are for you. Audio from the AirPods Max is crisp, clear, and open; their noise-cancellation is powerful. They’re surely pricier than other headphones with similar performance from Sony and Bose, but the AirPods Max are a huge listening upgrade from the AirPods and AirPods Pro for iOS users. You can read our full review of the AirPods Max here.

Since they were only announced just over a month ago, not many deals have surfaced for these headphones. The typical price is still the full $549, and we have yet to see any price drops across online retailers. Right now, buying a pair is difficult, as they’re largely out of stock, or backordered.

And that’s exactly why we put together this guide for the best headphone deals you can take advantage of right now. We update this list regularly, so be sure to check back for all the latest deals.

Over-ear headphones may not be the most portable headphones out there, but they generally sound a whole lot better than in-ear headphones, thanks to their larger drivers. They also boast long battery lives and plenty of padding for a comfortable fit. Some models even include smart features — like integration with your digital assistant, noise cancellation, and more.

On-ear headphones are a good compromise between portability and sound-quality. Sure, you won’t be able to fit them in your pocket, but they’re light-weight enough to easily carry around in a bag or backpack without noticing much of a difference. Unlike over-ear headphones, on-ear headphones rest on your outer ear, but good ones don’t do so uncomfortably.

Looking for something portable that you can easily put into your pocket? In-ear headphones are the way to go. We have technically split the in-ear headphones into two categories — so if you’re looking for modern true wireless headphones, skip ahead to the next section.

The deals below are for wired in-ear headphones, which connect through a cable to your listening device, and wireless in-ear headphones which connect via Bluetooth to your listening device. Unlike true wireless headphones, however, regular wireless in-ear headphones still feature wires to connect each earbud together.

Apple Airpods

Perhaps you want to avoid wires all together with a pair of true wireless headphones. These headphones feature separate earbuds that connect wirelessly to each other and to your listening device. A good example of true wireless headphones are Apple’s AirPods Pro — which are on sale right now for $197.

How to shop for headphones

If you are in the market for a new pair of headphones, it’s worth figuring out exactly what kind of headphones you want. The first step is to determine whether you want in-ear headphones, on-ear headphones, or over-ear headphones.

In-ear headphones are more portable than any other headphones, while over-ear headphones are the most comfortable and deep-sounding. On-ear headphones are often considered a good compromise between the two. If you hate wires, you could also get true wireless in-ear headphones, like AirPods, which cut the cables completely.

It’s also worth looking into a few headphone brands. If you’re an audiophile who wants the best-sounding headphones, companies like Sennheiser, Klipsch, and Shure are worth considering. If you want incredible noise-cancelling headphones or those that work great for day-to-day use, consider those from Sony or Bose. And, if you want plenty of bass and tight integration with your Apple products, look into headphones from Beats or Apple itself.

Once you’ve determined the type of headphones you want, you’ll want to figure out what your budget is. These days, you can get solid headphones for under $100, but as with anything, you get what you pay for — and the more you’re willing to spend, the better headphones you’ll be able to get.
