The best RV mattresses of 2021 for long road trips

  • A comfortable mattress makes a world of difference when you’re on the road and sleeping in an RV.
  • But not any regular mattress will do as you’ll want to make sure the one you buy fits the rig you’re driving.
  • The most important features to consider when buying an RV mattress are its weight, size, and materials.

As people start to plan summer vacations, many are still wary of the safety of flying. Because of that, alternative forms of travel, like renting RVs, are experiencing a massive boom. Take the Airbnb-style RV rental marketplace, Outdoorsy.com, for instance. Between March 2020 and July 2020, bookings on its platform rose by a staggering 4,500%. That’s no minor blip – hitting the open road in a mobile house on wheels is very in.

But it’s important to note that there’s still no guarantee of safety right now when it comes to travel, even while RVing. We always recommend following guidelines from the CDC, practicing safe social distancing, and washing your hands frequently.

That said, there are many elements to consider if you are planning an RV trip, such as where to park for the night, how many supplies to pack, and what accessories to bring. But for a peaceful night’s rest, a good RV mattress may be the most important factor.

According to Paige Bouma, Vice President of RV Trader, a marketplace for RV sales and rentals, “some of the most important things to consider when purchasing an RV mattress is deciding on the type of mattress, setting your budget, and determining the size, length, and weight needed for your RV.”

For more detailed info on what to consider when buying an RV mattress, read to the bottom of this article.

Here are the best RV mattresses:

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid

brooklyn aurora mattress

No matter if your travel plans take you to a warm or cool destination, having an RV mattress that adapts well in different climates is essential. This mattress is made with gel beads that liquify once temperatures rise to cool you down and then resolidify once temperatures dip.

The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress

tufts and needle original mattress

The Original Mattress for Tuft & Needle is a great choice for RV and camper use since at 10 inches tall, it’s a bit shorter than the brand’s other mattresses. This helps it fit into small spaces more easily and adds a little less weight to the RV.

However, this model is larger than many other RV-specific mattresses, so it’s best for vehicles that have more room for a standard-sized mattress.

Avocado Green Mattress

avocado green mattress

The handmade Avocado Green Mattress is 11-inches thick and delivers firm support with the use of sustainable latex and organic cotton and wool material. This brand sets the standard for affordable eco-luxury.

While this is best for larger RVs with enough space for a traditional-sized mattress, leaving the pillowtop option off saves you two inches on the depth. The sturdy handles on the sides also make the mattress easy to hoist into the RV.

Dynasty Mattress 10 Inch Cool Breeze Gel Memory Foam

dynasty mattress RV

The Dynasty Mattress has a gel interior to help regulate your body temperature when you sleep. This memory foam mattress is medium-firm and comes in King RV, Queen RV, and Short King RV sizes depending on the specs you need.

The Queen size weighs around 55 pounds. On Amazon, some reviewers noted how the mattress helps eliminate night sweats, while others say it allows them to sleep just as well as they would on their premium mattresses at home.

Haven Premier

haven premier mattress

A luxury mattress option for RVs that welcome standard sizes, the Haven Premier has a 12-layer memory foam construction. The foam features five layers of cooling gel and is ideal for tighter sleep situations or for the sleeper who runs hot.

The 12-inch thick mattress is described by user feedback on the website as comfy and sturdy.

Idle Gel Foam

idle gel foam mattress

Idle’s 12-inch gel foam mattress rapidly returns to form when you move around at night. As an added bonus, there’s a removable, washable quilted cover that makes keeping your mattress clean super easy, even while on the road.

This mattress is on the firmer side and is an especially good option for back sleepers.

Live and Sleep Ultra RV Mattress, Short Queen Gel Memory Foam Mattress

live and sleep rv mattress

The 60-pound Short Queen mattress by Live and Sleep is made from a gel foam material. The medium-firm mattress comes with a soft linen cover for extra comfort. Eco-conscious travelers will like that this mattress is made from environmentally friendly ingredients, too. The CertiPUR-US certification means that the mattress was made without ozone depleters, mercury, or lead.

Casper Nova

After a long day spent hiking outdoors or driving, collapsing into this hybrid mattress is just the ticket, since it offers both comfort and breathability. The Nova mattress is made with foam and springs for increased airflow, making it great for hot sleepers. There are also seven support zones built in to help align your spine while you sleep.

Bonus: Each mattress cover is made from approximately 70 recycled bottles.

The Allswell

the allswell mattress

A budget-friendly mattress that fits most standard-size RVs, The Allswell has charcoal and copper gel-infused memory foam that absorbs heat away from the body to cool you down at night.

Most sleepers rate this mattress as a medium-firm feel and say it is supportive and supremely comfortable.

What to consider when buying an RV mattress

Weight

While you may not usually think about the weight when it comes to choosing mattresses, it’s incredibly important when it comes to RV mattresses since every last ounce is precious.

“In an RV, weight and size matter for all components, since the load weight is critical when towing a travel trailer or driveable RV,” says Bouma. “Most RV mattresses weigh between 50 to 75 pounds, but this can increase depending on the size and type of mattress selected,” she notes.

You’ll want to keep weight in mind when choosing both size and type of material. “For example, a king-sized premium memory foam option will weigh more than a polyurethane foam queen size mattress,” Bouma explains.

Size

Almost all RVs have a space for a bed, but some spaces are smaller or shorter than a standard size mattress and have a lower profile. The most common RV mattress measurements are 60 inches by 75 inches by 80 inches, which doesn’t match standard measurements for home mattresses.

After measuring your space, you will see that it may measure somewhere between a Queen and King size. If this is the case, you’ll want to look for an RV-specific option with specialized measurements. However, there are also some RV models that have room for standard-sized mattresses.

Budget

Prices vary depending on a variety of factors, including quality, size, materials, and customization. Additionally, if you’re in the market for your first RV purchase and there is an opportunity to buy an RV with an already-upgraded mattress, it may be a better value to pay a little more upfront, rather than paying to swap out the mattress later.

Materials

Standard-sized mattresses and RV mattresses come in a wide variety of materials. “Low-cost polyurethane foam mattresses are the most common and most firm style. They usually come standard with an off-the-lot RV,” says Bouma.

“However, if you’re going to spend a lot of time in your RV or if great sleep is important to you, it is worth splurging on a different, more supportive material. Some of these materials include gel, memory foam, innerspring, and natural latex,” she notes. “If you’re planning to do most of your RVing in hot climates, though, consider a gel mattress. This material is also more supportive than polyurethane foam and provides the additional benefit of a cooling effect.”

Innerspring mattresses contain many coils and thus are often more supportive, while memory foam mattresses help distribute weight evenly, which can be important depending on the type of sleeper you are. Additionally, natural latex is similar to memory foam, but more durable and has a longer lifespan due to a rubber material component.

What mattress deals can I expect during Prime Day?

We won’t know the specific deals until Prime Day rolls around. If you’re in a hurry, we rounded up the best mattress sales happening this June, which may spill over into Amazon Prime Day.

What’s the best mattress to buy?

When shopping for a mattress, you’ll want to consider any medical conditions you may have, your ideal sleep position, body size, and preference. Side sleepers tend to prefer a softer mattress, while back sleepers, stomach sleepers, heavy people, and those with back pain need the support of a firmer mattress to bring their spine into proper alignment. If you share a bed with someone who has wildly different sleep preferences than you, you may benefit from a Split King mattress or an adjustable air bed like the Sleep Number 360 i8 Smart Bed.

We’ve tested dozens of mattresses over the years, so much so that we put together a comprehensive guide to the best mattresses. If you’re looking for a budget mattress available on Amazon, we love the Zinus Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress. Other plush favorites include brands like Dreamcloud, Tempur-Pedic, and Leesa.

The best way to find out if a mattress is right for you is to sleep on it for several nights. This makes a long risk-free sleep trial important. Fortunately, most bed-in-a-box brands offer trials of 90 nights or more whether you purchase your mattress from the company’s website or from Amazon.

What size mattress should you buy?

In general, Twin, Twin XL, and Full-size beds are for individuals sleeping alone, while Queen, King, and California King mattresses are for couples. If you’re a smaller person who sleeps alone, a Twin should be big enough. If you’re a little taller, go with Twin XL. And, if you’re a bigger, go with a Full.

Most couples will be happy with a Queen, the most popular mattress size. Taller people should consider the Cal King. And, larger sleeping partners will benefit from a King. You may also want a larger mattress if you share a bed with pets.

How much should I spend on a mattress?

Price doesn’t take center stage as much as comfort and preference. Here’s our breakdown on what you can expect to spend on a new mattress:

Type of mattress Budget Mid-priced Luxury
Foam mattress $450 or less From $1,000 From $1,300
Innerspring mattress $600 or less From $1,000 From $1,200
Hybrid mattress $1,100 or less From $1,500 From $2,200
Latex mattress $1,200 or less From $2,000 From $2,500

Based on rigorous testing and research, our favorite mattress, the Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid Mattress, is just under $1,400. But, our best budget option, Zinus, is often available on Amazon for less than $350.

In our testing, we’ve found that you generally get what you pay for when you invest in a mattress. Also, keep in mind that this is an item that you’ll spend a third of your life on for the next decade or more. Your comfort is worth spending a few extra cents per night to get the mattress that is right for you.

Where to buy a mattress: online or in store?

You may find peace of mind in going to a store to lay down on a mattress before you buy, but in our experience it takes several nights of sleeping on a mattress to know if it’s right for you. Online retailers can deliver mattresses right to your door and offer lengthy risk-free trial periods so you can give your bed a realistic shake before committing.

The 6 best places to shop for bed frames in 2021

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Best bed frame 2021 Restoration Hardware
  • A good bed frame anchors your bedroom decor and provides comfort and support while you sleep.
  • We spoke to interior designers for tips on finding the best bed frame to fit your style and budget.
  • These 6 retailers are where the design pros shop for bed frames.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

A bed frame is one of the biggest investments you’ll make when furnishing your home, and finding the right one can take just as much thought and effort as buying a mattress.

So, to streamline the process, we tapped interior designers to share their bed frame shopping strategies, from the stores they frequent to their thoughts on whether headboards and footboards are really necessary (more on that in our FAQ section, here).

As a starting point, Rasheeda Gray of Gray Space Interiors suggests thinking about how you want your bed to be featured in your space. “Will it be tall, short, have a huge presence? A very minimal presence? And once you determine that, is it the center of the room? Is it one of the show stopping pieces?” After you’ve settled on a profile, Gray says, “then you can dig into material. And finally, align all of that in a design style that you gravitate to.”

Havenly interior designer Brady Burke urges his clients to take their lounging habits into account before purchasing a bed frame. “Are you somebody who sits up in bed and reads and would like more of an upholstered headboard that you can lean against? Do you have a TV in your room? Is it just a sanctuary for sleeping?”

While you consider all of that, check out our list of the best places to shop for bed frames, from Mid-century modern platforms to boldly-upholstered tufted styles. To keep things simple, all prices are for queen-size frames (though every model we’ve highlighted comes in a range of sizes).

FAQs

What’s the best height for a bed frame?

While there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to your bed frame’s dimensions, Jones says “there’s a perfect height for beds, and that’s about the same height as a comfortable chair.” In other words, “about 16 to 18 inches from the ground to the top of the mattress.” Of course, your optimal seating height might be different, depending on how tall you are.

You’ll also want to consider your room’s dimension when you’re determining the right height for your bed frame. “I think a low profile bed would be a good bet for a small room,” Gray said. “If you have a tall bed, it could take up a lot of visual space and that would make the room look smaller.”

Can I put my bed frame in front of a window?

Yes, but take a look at the size of your window in relation to the bed. Gray suggests working in inverted triangles to balance your room. Meaning, “if the window is wider than the bed frame, then that’s fine, you can put the bed in front of it. Oftentimes the bed will be wider than the window, and in that case, you can just frame it with curtains.”

Do I need a headboard?

A bed frame without a headboard doesn’t necessarily have to look unfinished. Here are a couple styling tips, courtesy of Burke: “If you’re leaning into that minimal look, I like the idea of four sleeping pillows in matching pillow cases. You can also really go all out with throw pillows, accent pillows, and lumbars, and create a whole display because there’s nothing competing with the pillows and the bedding. You can really go either way.”

Gray prefers the look of a headboard, but there are exceptions. “The only 2 times I would not do a headboard are if the room is really small; it makes the space feel bigger if you don’t have the visual impact of the headboard,” she said “Secondly, if you have some sort of accent wall or mural behind the bed.”

Do I need a footboard?

A footboard offers a more traditional look, but it’s by no means necessary. “If you have a larger room and you’re going to have a set of chairs or maybe even a bench sitting at the foot of the bed, the footboard does a really nice job of separating the bed from that bench so you can have two separate zones,” Burke said.

However, a footboard may not be a practical choice if you’re on the taller side. “I’m 6 feet tall and I always feel like my feet are up against it, so I personally don’t love them.”

The best bed frames in 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

best bed frame 2021 floyd 2

  • A mattress can only offer so much support so you’ll also need a bed frame to pair with it.
  • We like bed frames from Zinus, Casper, and more, and are constantly testing new ones to recommend.
  • If you’re looking for a great mattress, check out our guide to the best mattresses.

A mattress is arguably the most important part of your bed, but the bed frame comes in at a close second. It often gets overlooked but it plays a big role in how your mattress’s support is distributed and how your space looks and feels.

There are about a million bed frames out there, but once you get past the construction, it comes down to the overall look. A velvet bed frame looks understated yet luxurious, while a canopy frame looks like something out of a fairy tale.

That’s why we researched popular brands and polled our colleagues to see what bed frames they use and love to curate our guide to the best bed frames.

Here are the best bed frames in 2021

The best platform bed frame

best bed frame 2021 zinus

The Zinus Lottie Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is classic and sturdy, and has a convenient pocket behind the headboard that holds everything for the bed frame.

The Zinus Lottie Bed Frame has a classic look and sturdy builds — something we’ve come to appreciate from an affordable brand like Zinus

While some bed frames don’t include a headboard, this one does. All the parts, including the meta frame, legs, and wooden slats conveniently fit into a large pocket behind it and are shipped that way as well for convenience. Senior editor Jada Wong, who’s had this bed frame for three years, found the pocket to be especially helpful when moving — there was no way any of the parts could get lost.

The bed frame is available in Twin, Full, Queen, and King sizes. The King frame sits 14 inches off the ground for extra storage space. The frame is eight inches off the ground for the other sizes.

Overall, the Zinus can blend quietly into the background of a loud bedroom or hold its own as the centerpiece of an otherwise neutral room. The sturdiness and easy setup are two major pluses, and the strong mattress support and soft upholstery complement each other, creating an overall high-quality bed frame.

The best bed frame on a budget

best bed frame 2021 zinus 2

The Zinus SmartBase Mattress Foundation is affordable, sturdy, and requires no assembly. It’s a no-frills bed frame at a price that can’t be beaten.

While inexpensive prices for big-ticket items can sometimes raise eyebrows, we’ve had enough positive experiences with Zinus to know that price is nothing but a number.

In fact, senior reporter Connie Chen used the Zinus SmartBase Mattress Foundation for almost two years and loved the sturdy support, easy assembly, and ample storage underneath for her tiny NYC bedroom.

The bed frame is made with strong steel, and anything larger than a Full comes as two pieces that you just snap together for easy assembly. It also gives you 13 inches of clearance, so you can easily store things underneath your bed.

The steel frame eliminates the need for an extra box spring and can support spring, memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses.

There are no bells and whistles so you can get a super minimalist style or add a headboard of your choice to jazz it up a bit.

The best adjustable bed frame

best bed frame 2021 Reverie

The Reverie Adjustable Base can help you get in and out of bed easier, sleep more comfortably, give you a massage, charge your devices, and more.

For those with limited mobility, the Reverie 9T Adjustable Foundation can help you sleep more comfortably.

You can set the legs at three different heights (8.25, 5.25, or 3 inches) to get in and out of bed easier, and the remote control can elevate your head, feet, or both to an optimal position for sleeping, watching TV, reading, or eliminating snoring. The remote control comes with presets for Flat, Anti-Snore, and Zero Gravity.  The frame also features lumbar support, which can be adjusted to best suit your needs.

When it comes to appearances, the foundation is sleek and the gray upholstery complements the slighter darker gray wood on the lower half of the frame and legs. There’s also an LED nightlight under the bed.

The Reverie has a massaging feature with four functions and 10 intensities. Most other beds that offer built-in massage only offer two or three massage functions and around five intensities. While it’s not quite like having an in-house masseuse, it’s a fun feature.

As for the additional tech elements, the Reverie has can charge compatible smartphones wirelessly while also charging the remote via the built-in USB port. You can also program your bed via a companion smartphone app.

And should anything go wrong with your bed, it comes with a 20-year limited warranty. — Lulu Chang

The best canopy bed frame

best bed frame 2021 DHP

The DHP Rosedale Metal Canopy Bed Frame adds glamour and romance to an otherwise utilitarian essential.

The DHP Rosedale Metal Canopy Bed Frame, available in three colors, will give your space an old-fashioned glamour. You can drape the frame with your favorite curtains, upholstery, lights, and much more, change up the design with the seasons, or just use it as-is for a more minimalist look.

This four-poster canopied bed frame has sleek X-shaped accents in the headboard and footboard and is crafted out of sturdy metal so don’t think that this frame is just for looks. There are also multiple support bars underneath it to hold your mattress in place.

The frame doesn’t come with a foundation or box spring, so you might want to consider adding one on.

The best modular bed frame

best bed frame 2021 floyd

Thanks to its customizable, modular design, you can take The Floyd Platform Bed to future homes and through mattress upgrades with little fuss.

The bed frame from buzzy direct-to-consumer home brand Floyd looks stylish and modern, but also allows for a lot of customizability. You can choose from four different wood and color combinations, and add a headboard or under-bed storage. It’s made in the US from FSC-certified wood and powder-coated steel. But we don’t only love it for its style.

Thanks to the modular design, if you upgrade your mattress size down the line, all you have to do is add panels and supports instead of buying a whole new frame.

The frame is lightweight yet supportive and sturdy, plus the optional under-bed storage is perfect for keeping extra bedding, linens, and clothing.

Editor Caitlin Petreycik is testing the Floyd Platform Bed and loved the straightforward, tool-free assembly process. However, she notes that the boxes and panels are heavy, and it would help to have a second person for assembly. Make sure you assemble the frame in the general area where you’d ultimately like to place it — otherwise, you’ll have to grab it where the wooden planks are joined in order to move it.

In case the frame isn’t for you, there’s a 30-day free return policy, as well as a 10-year warranty. —Connie Chen

Other bed frames we’re testing

best bed frame 2021 thuma

Thuma Bed Frame ($695+): This direct-to-consumer brand’s bed frame is sturdy, simple to build, and beautifully made — though it’s one of the more expensive frames we’ve tested. The style is on the modern and minimalist side, and it has a low profile platform that still has a nine-inch clearance for storage. Its headboard, while comfortable and supportive, is a bit short for our tastes.

Saatva Santorini Bed Frame ($1,295+): Low-key yet luxurious, the velvet Santorini bed frame can complement any room decor and bedding. Senior editor Jada Wong has been testing this bed frame for the past few months and hasn’t had issues with stability or durability, though the frame’s thin legs are prone to shifting and squeaking if they’re not on top of a carpet or rug. Assembly is non-existent as it comes with free white-glove delivery, but that also means that disassembly for a move can be confusing.

Casper frame and foundation ($250+): While best known for being the original bed-in-a-box brand, Casper also has bed frames. You’ll need both the frame and the foundation here for optimal support. The frame is made of 100% recycled steel and has solid wood slats so it’s very simple. Best of all, the frame can be assembled and disassembled in just minutes without tools. When a former freelance reporter tested the set, she was able to sleep on my newly assembled bed within 15 minutes.

How do I pick the right bed frame?

Here are some handy tips to help you find the right bed frame:

  • Find the right height: Bed frame heights are usually around 13 or 14 inches, though they can certainly differ. Be sure to check if the frame also comes with or needs a foundation or box spring because that’ll add a few inches once you put your mattress on time, and make sure you consider your mattress height as well.
  • Figure out what style you want: Because your bed setup is the highlight of any space, the design of your frame plays a big role in your choice. Once you get past the construction of a bed frame, it’s mostly about aesthetics so you have plenty of options whether you want something minimal or elaborate.
  • Check the assembly: Most bed frames require some sort of assembly but if you’re not handy or aren’t able to assemble items yourself, check what your new bed frame will need. Some brands offer free white glove and assembly so that’s something to consider if you feel comfortable.
