What is a mobile hotspot? How to connect your devices to your phone’s LTE-supported Wi-Fi signal

Woman working in coffee shop
Mobile hotspots can go anywhere and create a Wi-Fi signal using the LTE network.

  • Mobile hotspots serve as mobile internet networks by converting an LTE connection into a Wi-Fi signal that other devices, like laptops or tablets, can use.
  • Mobile hotspots can come as pocket-sized individual devices or built-in to your smartphone.
  • Mobile hotspots typically rely on a data plan, which means those without unlimited data plans will likely want to be conscious of their hotspot use.
  • Mobile hotspots can connect up to 10 individual devices, are password and WPA2 security protected, but have limited range and might be slower than your Wi-Fi connection.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

When traveling somewhere there isn’t Wi-Fi, having a mobile hotspot can be very useful.

A mobile hotspot, otherwise known as a personal hotspot, is a device that lets users connect to the internet by acting as a localized Wi-Fi network.

There are ways you can get a portable hotspot sold separately, but nowadays, many mobile hotspots come as a feature on your smartphone.

What is a mobile hotspot?

A mobile hotspot is a device that has the ability to cast a wireless signal for other devices to connect to while on-the-go. This is not to be confused with a hotspot, which can be picked up in public places like hotels, malls, and coffee shops, where buildings or businesses have private networks that offer free Wi-Fi.

Mobile hotspots generally operate by taking an LTE connection, sometimes from your phone, and converting it into a Wi-Fi signal. You can then “connect” your computer or another device to it the same way those devices would connect to a home or public Wi-Fi network.

Physical mobile hotspots are small enough to fit into your pocket and have a generally reliable battery life, sometimes up to one day. They can be utilized when about in public, say in a park or at the beach, while traveling abroad, or anywhere your LTE connection works. They’re able to connect to any Wi-Fi-based device, such as a laptop, smartphone, tablet, or game console.

While hotspots have become pretty standard on mobile smartphones, accessing them might incur additional costs depending on your carrier and device. Your mobile hotspot’s speed and longevity will also depend on your data plan and how many gigabytes you have.

Digital security and reliability with mobile hotspots

Mobile hotspots are a great but imperfect solution. While they can go practically anywhere, they are not as fast as an at-home or in-building broadband or fiber Wi-Fi connection. With them being mobile, their range is also not far when connecting other devices to it.

Having access to data, you can create a Wi-Fi signal wherever you are, but because smartphone hotspots are connected to your mobile device, they can take off a lot of battery life rather quickly.

Man on train using tablet and smartphone
Mobile hotspots portability makes them perfect for people who work on the go.

On the upside, your mobile hotspot’s Wi-Fi network can be protected with WPA-2 encryption, making it just as secure as any home router. Just be sure to keep your password protected and enabled. If someone gets ahold of it or you aren’t using password protection, anyone will have the ability to connect to your hotspot and access data transmitted through it.

Does my phone have a mobile hotspot?

Many modern smartphones have a built-in hotspot feature, which you can likely set up and enable somewhere in your device’s settings app. In general, many carriers and devices offer the service so long as you have a minimum of 4G LTE service, though support for a 5G network will likely improve your experience.

Most smartphone mobile hotspots allow you to connect multiple devices to your network, in some cases up to 10. Just know that when sharing this kind of network with other people, you may make an already noticeably slower experience even slower.

Depending on the device, you can rename your hotspot and change its password from the defaults, hide your device so others can’t see your network, and decide whether you want to use WPA2 security or go without it.

Depending on your device, you may be able to enable your mobile hotspot and connect to other devices via Bluetooth or USB tethering.

There are different ways you can connect your phone’s hotspot to your devices.

For those without an unlimited data plan, it’s important to note that the hotspot is drawing from your data caps, which means you can run out – and you may do it much quicker than regular browsing on your phone, depending on what you’re using your mobile hotspot for. Even those with unlimited plans may find their experience slowed if their service carrier slows speeds after certain data caps are hit.

Once connected, connect a computer or other smartphone and surf the web, stream videos, and listen to music just like a regular internet connection.

  • AirDrop lets you quickly share and receive photos, videos, and more from other Apple devices nearby.

How to use Apple CarPlay and use your iPhone apps hands-free while driving

Man using Apple Carplay in car
Apple CarPlay lets you go hands free by connecting your iPhone and apps to your car’s touchscreen.

  • To use Apple CarPlay, your car must support the feature and your iPhone needs to be running iOS 7.1 or higher.
  • CarPlay is a custom iOS interface that presents important apps and information from your iPhone on the car’s touchscreen.
  • Once connected, you can run apps that are optimized for CarPlay on your car’s screen, navigate, make calls, use Siri, and more.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

While your iPhone adds a lot of convenience to your daily drive thanks to its music and podcast access, voice calls, navigation, and more, it’s also unsafe (and possibly illegal) to fiddle with your phone while driving.

Apple offers a safer alternative: Apple CarPlay. The custom interface puts the most important iPhone features on a display in your car, accessible using your car’s infotainment controls and your voice with Siri.

Apple CarPlay is built into every iPhone running iOS 7.1 or later. To take advantage of CarPlay, though, you need a car that supports CarPlay – the infotainment screen needs to work with CarPlay, or you need to add a CarPlay-compatible display to your vehicle.

How to use Apple CarPlay

CarPlay should start automatically when you connect your phone to the car via USB.

If it doesn’t, tap the CarPlay icon on your car’s infotainment screen. The first time you do this, you might need to unlock your phone and allow your iPhone to connect to CarPlay when locked.

The CarPlay screen starts on the Home screen, which displays your most recently used apps in a column on the left as well as the map and audio control.

Yes, you can use a mouse with your iPad – here’s how to connect and use a Bluetooth mouse

ipad keyboard mouse
It’s easy to connect a wireless mouse to your iPad.

  • You can use a wireless mouse with an iPad that’s running iPadOS 13.4 or later.
  • To use a mouse on your iPad, you’ll need to pair them using the Bluetooth menu.
  • Once paired, you can use a mouse with your iPad to navigate, make selections, start apps and more.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Over the past few years, Apple has put more and more effort into marketing the iPad as a replacement for your laptop. One major example of this is how new iPads can connect to a wireless computer mouse, and use it in lieu of the touchscreen.

If you have iPadOS 13.4 or later, you can connect a wireless Bluetooth mouse to your iPad. Connecting a mouse lets you navigate through apps, select items, and click buttons without touching the screen.

Note that some wired computer mice can also connect to an iPad, but you might need a special USB-C adapter for them. Check out the manual for the specific mouse you want to use, or contact the manufacturer for more information.

Here’s which iPad models can use a mouse, and how to connect it.

Which iPads can connect with a mouse?

You can use any wireless Bluetooth mouse with any iPad running iPadOS 13.4 or later. And since the iPad has a Bluetooth receiver built into it, you won’t need a Bluetooth dongle.

These iPad models are compatible with iPadOS 13.4 or later, and can use a mouse:

  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad 5th generation or later
  • iPad Air 2 or later
  • iPad Mini 4 or later

To make sure you’re running iPadOS 13.4 or later, start the Settings app and tap “General,” then tap “About.” If your iPadOS version is too old, head to the “Software Update” screen and see if a new version is available.

How to connect a wireless mouse to your iPad

1. Turn on your mouse and put it into pairing mode. Generally, there should be a pairing button on the underside of the mouse or in the battery compartment. Press it until you see a blinking light that indicates pairing mode is on.

2. Start the Settings app on your iPad.

3. Tap “Bluetooth.”

4. Look for the mouse in the list of devices. When you see it, tap the name of the mouse.

Can you use a mouse with an iPad 2
Find the mouse in the list of Bluetooth devices.

5. In the pop-up window, tap “Pair.” Follow any additional instructions, if necessary, to pair it with the iPad. This may include entering a passcode.

Can you use a mouse with an iPad 3
Tap “Pair” to complete the setup process.

How to use a mouse with an iPad

Once paired, the mouse should work automatically whenever it’s turned on and in range of the iPad. As you move the mouse, you should see a small dot, which is the mouse pointer.

As it hovers over buttons and icons, you should see them expand or highlight to indicate they’re selected. If you move the pointer into a text field, you should see the I-beam indicating you can type.

Can you use a mouse with an iPad 4a
The cursor is a gray dot that can be hard to see, but you’ll see items highlight or get larger when the pointer is over them.

If you stop moving the mouse, the dot will disappear so it’s not in the way. To get it back, just move the mouse again.
