Bill and Melinda Gates are getting a divorce after 27 years of marriage.

The couple, who married in 1994, announced the divorce on Twitter on Monday.

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” their joint statement said. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”

The announcement raises questions of how the couple will divide their massive fortune. Bill Gates, the cofounder of Microsoft, is the world’s fourth-richest person with an estimated net worth of $146 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Gates live in Washington state, where all assets acquired through a marriage are split 50/50 unless otherwise specified in a prenuptial agreement. A spokesperson for Bill Gates declined to comment on whether the couple had signed such an agreement.

In another high-profile billionaire divorce in Washington state, that of Amazon founder Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos in 2019, MacKenzie Bezos walked away with 25% of the Amazon stock the couple co-owned, which was worth about $38 billion. Jeff Bezos retained the remaining stock as well as his ex-wife’s interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin.

However their assets are divided, both the Gates will likely remain two of the richest people in the world after their divorce. Read on for 11 facts that put Bill Gates’ $146 billion fortune into perspective.

1. Bill Gates has become $41 billion richer in the past year alone.

Bill Gates speaks ahead of former U.S. President Barack Obama at the Gates Foundation Inaugural Goalkeepers event on September 20, 2017 in New York City.

On May 4, 2020, Gates’ net worth was an estimated $105 billion.

He’s nearly $70 billion richer than he was five years ago in 2016.

2. Based on how much wealthier Gates got in the past year, he makes approximately $4,630 per second, according to Business Insider calculations.

That means it would not be worth his time to stop and pick up a $100 bill that he dropped on the ground.

3. If Gates spent $1 million a day, it would take him more about 400 years to spend his fortune, according to Business Insider calculations.

But although Gates indulges in a few luxuries — such as a private plane and a massive Washington home now worth $125 million — the billionaire is known for being relatively frugal in his spending.

4. Gates is about 66% richer than the British monarchy.

The British royal family was worth an estimated $88 billion in 2017, according to Forbes.

5. Although Gates made his fortune cofounding Microsoft with Paul Allen, he only owned 1.3% of the company in 2019 – and he’s still worth $146 billion.

It’s unclear what percentage of the company Gates now owns after he stepped down as a director of Microsoft in March 2020.

6. Gates remains the fourth-richest person in the world even after giving away at least $41 billion to charity over the years.

Bill and Melinda Gates founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000.

Gates and his wife founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, which is now the largest private charitable foundation in the world and focuses on global health and poverty. Gates has donated $35.8 billion in Microsoft stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, according to Forbes.

Bill and Melinda will remain co-chairs and trustees of their charitable organization following their divorce, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a spokesperson told Insider.

“No changes to their roles or the organization are planned,” the spokesperson said. “They will continue to work together to shape and approve foundation strategies, advocate for the foundation’s issues, and set the organization’s overall direction.”

In 2010, Gates and Warren Buffett — now the world’s seventh-richest person — founded The Giving Pledge, a charity organization that encourages the world’s wealthiest people to give the majority of their fortune to charity during their lifetime or after their death.

He has also invested $50 million into Alzheimer’s research and another $30 million to a fund with the aim of diagnosing Alzheimer’s earlier.

7. Gates is so rich that an average American spending $1 is similar to Gates spending about $1.2 million.

The median net worth of an average US household is $121,700, according to Federal Reserve data. Dividing $146 billion by $121,700 comes to about $1.2 million.

8. Gates’ net worth is greater than the GDP of Luxembourg, Estonia, and Bolivia – combined.

Luxembourg’s GDP is about $71 billion, Estonia’s is $31.4 billion, and Bolivia’s is $40.8 billion, according to World Bank data.

9. Gates is richer than the richest person in Asia and the richest person in China, combined.

Mukesh Ambani
Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest person, is worth $66.3 billion.

Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani, worth $74.7 billion, is the richest person in Asia. And bottled water and vaccine billionaire Zhong Shanshan, worth $66.3 billion, is China’s richest person, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.

10. Gates could give every single living person on the planet $15 – and still have $28 billion left over.

The world population was 7,874,758,042 as of May 2021.

11. According to the Social Security Administration, the average American man with a bachelor’s degree will earn about $2.2 million in his lifetime. Gates makes that in a little over 28 minutes.

According to the SSA, the average American woman with a bachelor’s degree will earn $1.3 million in her lifetime.

Based on his earnings of $41 billion in the past year, Gates makes about $78,006 per minute, according to Business Insider calculations.

Inside Miami’s exclusive, high-security ‘Billionaire Bunker,’ where Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen paid $17 million for a mansion they’re planning to demolish

It’s been called the “Billionaire Bunker” and one of the “wealthiest, private, most secure communities in Miami Beach and the world.”

Indian Creek is a village of about 42 people on a tiny private island in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Its “Billionaire Bunker” moniker stems from its wildly wealthy and high-profile residents, including billionaire investor Carl Icahn, supermodel Adriana Lima, and Spanish singer Julio Iglesias.

In the past couple of months, the island has gained some new high-profile residents, including Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen. The seven-time Super Bowl winner and his supermodel wife paid $17 million for a mansion on Indian Creek that they’re planning to tear down and replace with a new, eco-friendly mansion, Page Six reported in December.

The news of Brady and Bundchen’s purchase followed reports that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner had dropped $32 million on a waterfront lot on the exclusive island, which Insider reported on last year when Julio Iglesias put it up for sale.

In 2019, Insider got a tour of the island from Nelson Gonzalez, a luxury realtor and the senior vice president of EWM Realty International. Here’s what it’s like on the exclusive, high-security island.

Indian Creek is a village of about 40 residents on a tiny private island in Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

It’s been nicknamed the “Billionaire Bunker.”

The village’s 34 homes are built around the perimeter of the island, giving them all waterfront views. The center is occupied by an 18-hole golf course and a country club.

“Indian Creek is an exclusive 300-acre island located on the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay and recognized as one of the wealthiest, private, most secure communities in Miami Beach, and the world,” Michael Light, the founder of Miami Luxury Homes and senior director of luxury sales at Douglas Elliman, wrote on his website.

In May 2019, when I got an exclusive tour of Indian Creek Village, I arrived at the island in an Uber. We were stopped at the guardhouse before even getting on the island.

My name was on a list of expected guests, so I didn’t have a problem getting in.

Indian Creek’s police department monitors the only entrance to the island.

The island is protected by a private 13-person police force, according to my tour guide, Nelson Gonzalez, a luxury realtor and the senior vice president of EWM Realty International.

The force even patrols the perimeter of the island from the water.

Indian Creek Village is only accessible by car. A single bridge spans the waterway from Surfside.

After we drove across the bridge, I was dropped off in the driveway of one of the island’s opulent mansions.

Homes in Indian Creek are rarely up for sale. At the time of my visit, there was only one house on the market: an eight-bedroom, Mediterranean-style mansion for $24 million.

I was able to take a tour and photograph the home because it’s for sale, but I wasn’t allowed to take photos of any other houses on the island.

The house sold for $17 million in April 2020.

Though it was the only one on the market when I visited, houses in the village have been known to sell without being officially listed.

In February 2019, an Indian Creek estate that wasn’t officially on the market sold for $50 million, breaking the record for the most expensive single-family home sold in the Miami area.

It was the second time the home broke that record, after selling for $47 million in 2012, Insider’s Lina Batarags previously reported.

A pristine 18-hole golf course spans the center of the island.

The island’s residents are protected by a private 13-person police force that patrols the perimeter from the water and by land.

The Indian Creek Golf Course is one of the prime golf courses in Florida, according to the website Top 100 Golf Courses.

“This is not one of the most accessible venues for the visiting golfer, so you’ll need to befriend a member to tee it up on the classical William S. Flynn-designed course here at Indian Creek, which dates back to the 1930s,” the website reads.

I wasn’t allowed to get out of the car and walk around the island, so I took photos through the windows.

Gonzalez told me that the island is high-security and that the residents are very concerned with privacy. I spotted one of the private police cars patrolling the island about two minutes into my tour.

The island has just one street, Indian Creek Island Road. It’s bordered by lavish homes on one side and the perfectly manicured golf course on the other.

Most of the village’s homes sit behind gates, partially shrouded from view by palm trees.

High-profile investors, Russian billionaires, professional coaches, models and singers, and even US senators have called Indian Creek Village home.

Among the wealthy people who have owned homes on the island are supermodel Adriana Lima, former Sears CEO Eddie Lampert, and now, NFL star Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

One of the island’s most famous residents is the singer Julio Iglesias, who owns several properties on the island, Gonzalez told me.

It’s one of his parcels that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are said to have bought for $32 million.

In 2017, Iglesias was asking for $150 million for four contiguous vacant lots he owns on the island. Together, the properties would offer 800 feet of water frontage.

The singer and actor Ricky Martin also lived on the island at one point, but it’s unclear whether he still does.

His home is “quite small compared to the houses of the area,” according to Getty.

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn also calls the village home.

Icahn paid $7.5 million for his 14,000-square-foot Indian Creek vacation home in 1997, according to Forbes.

Yet another notable resident of Indian Creek was Don Shula, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Shula, who died in May 2020, and his wife lived in a sprawling white house on the island for more than 20 years.

The Indian Creek Country Club, a sprawling Mediterranean-style structure, sits on the island’s southwest shore.

indian creek village

“The Indian Creek Country Club is Miami-Dade County’s most exclusive, and controversial, private society,” Gus Garcia-Roberts wrote in the Miami New Times in 2011.

The clubhouse includes a swimming pool, a fitness center, a massage and steam room, locker rooms, a bridge room, and a marina. It was built in 1929 by Maurice Fatio, the architect who designed many of the most famous estates in Palm Beach.

Next to the clubhouse is a massive banyan tree.

indian creek village

Florida is one of the only places in North America where banyan trees, which are native to tropical Asia, can be found.

After my tour, I was driven back out of Indian Creek Village.

indian creek village

While I’d expected a degree of security on the private island, I didn’t expect it to be quite at that level, from the 13-person private police force to the screening at the guarded gatehouse to the ban on setting foot outside the car or taking photos of the homes.

The island is really small — the driving tour took at most 20 minutes, and that was moving slowly with frequent stops.

The most telling detail of my short time on the island is that I don’t remember seeing a single civilian on the street or in the yards, but I saw at least two members of the police force.

So while the level of security is definitely, and understandably, a draw to wealthy residents, I found it to be a bit of a deserted island.
