How to manually update the carrier settings on your iPhone to improve its cellular connection and performance

iPhone X
You should keep your iPhone’s carrier settings updated to ensure your phone works properly.

If you’ve ever noticed a menu for carrier settings on your iPhone or have seen a pop-up prompting you to update those settings, you may have wondered what they are and if (or why) you need to do it.

Basically, carrier settings contain packets of data about your iPhone and the network you use that help ensure performance and connectivity. Keeping this data up-to-date is important to ensure your iPhone is working optimally, so it’s worth checking to see if your carrier settings are up to date.

It should be noted that generally speaking, you’ll automatically be prompted to update your carrier settings when such updates become available.

However, if you want to do this manually – potentially a necessary step if you insert a new SIM card into your iPhone, for instance – it’s a quick process. Here’s how to do it.

How to manually update the carrier settings on an iPhone

1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

2. Open your phone’s Settings app, tap General, and then tap About.

3. Scroll down to Carrier. Next to Carrier, if a new update is available, you’ll see an option to perform this update. Otherwise, you’ll simply be shown the currently installed settings or carrier version number. Tapping on the version number can display further information about the carrier.

IMG_7673
If there’s an update available for your carrier settings, it will appear in the Carrier tab on the About screen.

Keeping your iPhone’s carrier settings up-to-date ensures that the phone is able to communicate with and operate on your network correctly and efficiently.

If your settings are outdated, you might experience issues making calls (even on Wi-Fi), sending texts, or even listening to your voicemail. It pays to take a few seconds to check that everything is up-to-date – and to go ahead and install any updates if and when you’re prompted to do so.

Young Life flourishes on college campuses despite pushback over gay volunteer ban and sexual misconduct accusations

young life Colorado 2
Young Life’s corporate headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  • Young Life is a $500 million ministry that aims to connect children with Christianity.
  • It operates on more than 200 college campuses in the US.
  • Some former members are critiquing Young Life following claims of sexual misconduct and anti-gay policies.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

An Insider investigation has found 10 allegations of sexual misconduct against members, volunteers, and staffers at Young Life, a $500 million ministry that aims to connect children and young adults with Christianity.

These allegations have emerged amid the #dobetteryounglife movement, in which former Young Life members are sharing their experiences with the ministry, including claims that the group’s policies around LGBTQ staff members and volunteers are discriminatory and harmful.

According to internal documents reviewed by Insider, Young Life welcomes LGBTQ youth into the ministry. Queer adults, however, are not allowed to serve as volunteers or staff members, except for select cases in which they are “celibate.”

Are you a current or former Young Life staff member, volunteer, or student? Share your story with reporter Rachel Premack here or securely here.

In response, students at some universities have pushed against Young Life’s status on campus. Duke University’s student government voted unanimously in 2019 to decertify Young Life as an on official student group, while Gonzaga University’s Young Life chapter disbanded in 2020 in protest over the national policy banning gay leadership.

Young Life’s policies on sexual harassment also raised questions among attorneys contacted by Insider.

For example, Young Life’s sexual-conduct policy prohibits employees and volunteers from reporting misconduct to the police without executive approval. Pamela Moore, a partner at McCarter & English who works with employers on worker-relations policies, said that portion of Young Life’s policy would “generally be considered unlawful” under federal and state regulations, which give workers the right to report alleged violations of equal-employment laws to outside agencies.

Malvitz wong 1
Maddie Malvitz, left, and Becca Wong, right, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Both were previously members of the University of Michigan’s Young Life chapter.

A representative for Young Life defended the group’s policies, saying that “all Young Life staff and volunteers are mandatory reporters. Additionally, Young Life has an anonymous portal to report any misconduct as well as a 24/7 hotline for staff to report an incident of any kind. If a report, made via either of these channels, is criminal in nature, Young Life contacts local authorities directly.”

Despite the pushback, Young Life maintains campus ministries on more than 200 US colleges and universities.

Several of the former Young Life members who spoke to Insider came into contact with the organization while at college, including University of Michigan students Becca Wong and Maddie Malvitz.

“I don’t think that the harm that Young Life causes is justified by the Christians they produce,” Wong told Insider. She said Young Life removed her after she reported that a fellow Young Life volunteer had been accused of sexual assault by Malvitz in 2019. Wong has filed a complaint against Young Life with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging a “sexually hostile workplace” during her time as a volunteer.

Young Life declined to comment on claims from Malvitz and Wong, citing the EEOC investigation.

The $500 million Christian camp giant Young Life has failed to protect young people from sexual misconduct, some former members say

young life Colorado 5
Young Life’s corporate headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  • Young Life is the 11th-largest ministry in the US, according to Ministry Watch.
  • Ten former members of the teen mega-ministry told Insider they experienced sexual misconduct.
  • Young Life operates 26 camps and has more than 8,500 local ministries worldwide.
  • Read the full investigation here.

Insider’s six month-long investigation into the Christian youth group Young Life has revealed 10 claims from women who said they experienced sexual misconduct as staff members, volunteers, or students involved in the ministry.

Around 400,000 children worldwide attend Young Life meetings each week, according to the ministry. Some 250,000 also go to a Young Life summer camp. There are 26 camps worldwide, 20 of which are based in the US.

“You go to camp and your life is changed forever,” a former volunteer leader from Colorado told Insider.

However, one of these camps was the setting in which Laureana Arellano, a former Young Life volunteer leader, said she was sexually assaulted in the summer of 2019. Cory Lange, another camp staff member, allegedly stuck his hands down Arellano’s pants while both were working in a camp kitchen in Colorado and grabbed her genitals.

Are you a current or former Young Life staff member, volunteer, or student? Share your story with reporter Rachel Premack here or securely here.

Arellano said Young Life did not properly investigate her claims when she reported Lange’s alleged behavior.

Her allegation formed the basis of a 2020 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint and a federal lawsuit that’s since been settled out of court. In an interview, Arellano’s roommate at the time corroborated her account of her interactions with Lange.

In a declaration filed in connection with the case, Lange said he never touched Arellano in any sexual way or made any sexual advances toward her; he did not respond to Insider’s repeated requests for comment.

In written filings, Young Life denied Arellano’s claim. A Young Life representative declined to comment on the case to Insider, citing the ongoing EEOC investigation but said that the organization is “defending itself vigorously.”

Nearly eight months after Arellano’s experience, she said she saw two male campers grab a female camper’s breasts at a Young Life winter camp, according to interviews with Insider and her complaint. She reported this to the camp supervisor, who she said made the boys apologize to the girl but didn’t kick them out.

Young Life operates more than 8,500 local ministries worldwide

Many of these ministries involve volunteers and employees who interact with children at their middle or high school lunch rooms and in after-school activities. It also has more than 200 ministries at college campuses across the US.

Women previously involved in Young Life in ministries located in Texas, Michigan, and other states told Insider they also experienced misconduct there.

When made aware of these allegations, either formally or informally, Young Life’s local or national leadership ignored or mishandled their complaints, the women said. After reporting their experiences internally, at least one said she lost her position within the organization, and two others said they were suspended. Some said they were asked to forgive their alleged assailants.

“Women are not safe in this ministry if Young Life is going to listen to our stories and do nothing about it,” said Brie Boatman, a former staff member who left Young Life in 2018.

“The safety and well-being of children and youth is a top priority for our organization, and abuse is not tolerated,” a representative for Young Life said in response to a detailed list of allegations provided by Insider.

“Our sexual conduct, anti-harassment and mandatory reporting policies – along with training – are designed to equip Young Life staff and volunteers to recognize improper or criminal behavior and to take immediate and appropriate action. For this reason, along with the value we place on all those involved in our programs, we communicate clearly and consistently that Young Life is a mandatory reporter in all jurisdictions. We take every allegation of sexual misconduct and harassment seriously, and no one guilty of violating or abusing another individual is allowed to continue in relationship with Young Life.”

The best Apple AirPods deals you can get now, including $70 off the AirPods Pro

the best apple airpod deals available now including the airpods, airpods pro, and airpods max
  • Apple’s AirPod lineup makes listening to audio on iPhones easy.
  • AirPods and AirPods Pro are frequently on sale, but some discounts are better than others.
  • Right now, you can get the AirPods Pro for $70 off their full retail price.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Apple’s AirPods are popular for a reason: they’re among the most convenient and best options for wireless earbuds. They automatically pair with your Apple devices the moment you open the case nearby, and you can use your Apple devices to help you pinpoint a misplaced AirPod.

Apple products, like AirPods, go on sale regularly. In fact, you can find them for less than what you’d pay at Apple nearly every week. During Apple’s back-to-school promotion, you can get a free pair of AirPods with a Mac or iPad purchase.

Below, we’ve highlighted the best AirPod deals available in September 2021, including $70 off the AirPods Pro. If you know which model you’re looking for, you can skip ahead by clicking its name in the table of contents to the left.

AirPods with regular charging case deals

airpods pro wireless charging
It’s easy to check what version your AirPods are running.

AirPods with Charging Case (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

The standard AirPods with Charging Case are the cheapest AirPods you can buy. The included charging case charges via a Lightning cable, the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

The AirPods have a five-hour battery life, and the case stores 24 hours of battery charge. A quick 15-minute charge in the case gives them an extra three hours of listening time. They are not sweat- or water-resistant – you’ll have to check out the AirPods Pro below if that’s important to you. You can read our full AirPods review here.

Contrary to what MSRP would like you to think, AirPods typically only sell for $120 across online retailers – a good $40 less than listed. During Black Friday and Cyber Monday we saw them fall as low as $99, but that kind of promotion is rare.

AirPods with Wireless Charging Case deals

airpods next to iphone

AirPods with Wireless Charging Case (medium, Preferred: Target)

The AirPods with Wireless Charging Case are identical to the 2nd-gen AirPods with Charging Case, except the case can be charged wirelessly as well as via a Lightning cable. That means you can power the case on a wireless charging pad that uses the Qi wireless charging standard. You can read our full AirPods with Wireless Charging Case review here.

Though they’re listed for more, the typical price for the Wireless Charging Case AirPods is $160 across online retailers. During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we saw them fall as low as $140; it’s unlikely they’ll drop that low again outside of short-lived discounts from one or two retailers.

AirPods Pro deals

Airpods BF

AirPods Pro (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

The AirPods Pro are Apple’s flagship AirPods, and they’re also our pick for the best wireless earbuds for Apple fans. They have a shorter stem than the original AirPods, and they have an in-ear design with tips for three different sizes. If you’ve ever had difficulty keeping Apple’s earbuds in your ear, these are the solution. The wireless charging case is also wider than the standard charging cases.

Despite their smaller size, they come with active noise cancellation, and they sound a little better than the regular AirPods. Battery life with noise cancellation enabled isn’t as long as the regular AirPods, but it’s still pretty good (4.5 hours versus 5 hours). The wireless charging case holds a 24-hour total charge.

The AirPods Pro are also sweat- and water-resistant, whereas the regular AirPods are not. You can read our full AirPods Pro review here.

A pair is listed for $249, but the typical price hovers around $200 across online retailers like Walmart and Costco. We’ve seen them drop lower during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but if you need a pair now, don’t settle for paying any more than $200.

AirPods Max deals

AirPods Max being worn

Airpods Max (medium, Preferred: Amazon)

If you’re an Apple aficionado looking for the best audio you can find, the AirPods Max are for you. Audio from the AirPods Max is crisp, clear, and open; their noise-cancellation is powerful. They’re surely pricier than other headphones with similar performance from Sony and Bose, but the AirPods Max are a huge listening upgrade from the AirPods and AirPods Pro. You can read our full review of the AirPods Max here.

Since release, the typical price for a pair has dropped to $500, with some colors as low as $490.

Tips for finding the best AirPods deals

Apple products, despite their reputation for never going on sale, see discounts frequently. Unlike most other electronics, AirPods see discounts year-round and, in some rare cases, see better discounts than we see during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

To make sure you get the best price on Apple AirPods, don’t shop at Apple. Best Buy, Target, and Walmart frequently mark down Apple’s headphones.

Where to find Apple AirPods

AirPods are available in most retailers that sell tech, in addition to the Apple Store. You can find them at Best Buy, Target, Costco, Walmart, and anywhere else you’d see electronics.

Apple’s year-round education pricing includes discounts on Macs and iPad. During its back-to-school promotion, you can get a free pair of AirPods with a Mac or iPad purchase.

A California exec moved to Montana for a quieter, less expensive life during the pandemic. He bought his $719,000 house without having stepped foot inside.

The Jansezian family stand on their street in front of their new house smiling with their arms around each other.
Krikor Jansezian with his wife Myriah, and two of their children, Vahan and Sara, outside their new home in Billings, Montana.

  • Krikor Jansezian, 50, moved to Billings, Montana, in March after 43 years living in California.
  • The hospital COO moved his family to its new $719,000 home after only having seen it on FaceTime.
  • Jansezian said he has got his “quality of life back” in the more affordable and friendly city.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Krikor Jansezian had wanted to leave Claremont for a while.

But it was the chaos of the pandemic that finally pushed the 50-year-old hospital executive to make the 1,200-mile move to Billings, Montana, with his family, in search of a quieter, more affordable life.

“I wanted to stay healthy and get healthier, especially in light of the pandemic,” Jansezian told Insider. “And that comes in the form of less stress in your outside-of-work environment.”

After 43 years in California, Jansezian said bought his $719,000 four-bedroom new-build house after only a FaceTime tour with the realtor as there were so few homes on the market.

Four members of the the Jansezian family stand outside their White House with a grey roof.
The Jansezian family previously lived in Claremont, California, for seven years before moving to Billings.

“The first time I walked through the house was in March, and I was already in escrow,” Jansezian said. “And it didn’t matter, because it was a beautiful home.”

“For $719,000 in California, you can maybe get a one-bedroom condo,” he added.

Four members of the Jansezian family lounge on deckchairs on their patio in their back garden.
The Jansezian family relaxes in their new back garden.

Jansezian said that he and his wife had “zero” connection to the 109,000-person city before they moved, but were attracted to its slower pace of life, cheaper cost of living, and close proximity to areas of natural beauty, including Yellowstone National Park.

“I don’t know if I can get this in California,” he said.

A red-brick building sits at the intersection of two wide streets as the sun beats down onto the tarmac.
Billings is Montana’s most populous city with more than 109,000 residents.

As the pandemic pushed millions of Americans into remote work and caused some to reevaluate their lives, many moved from large, coastal cities to cheaper, less densely populated areas, such as in Texas and Florida.

A plane flies over orange rocks that have the shadows of two people and a dog cast against them.
Billings topped The Wall Street Journal’s Emerging Housing Markets Index in July.

In July, Billings topped The Wall Street Journal’s Emerging Housing Markets Index, a rank of the areas where homebuyers can expect both a strong return on their investment, and a high quality of life.

Billings placed first thanks to its hot housing market, affordable properties, and relatively low unemployment rate, The Journal said. Deb Parker, owner of Parker & Co. Real Estate Services, told The Journal that many buyers were coming from out of state.

Jansezian said he already knew of one couple who had moved from Los Angeles to Billings this year to work in his hospital.

“For someone moving from an expensive market, the offerings here are incredibly attractive,” he said.

Fairy light are suspended above a wide road in downtown Billings at night.
Krikor Jansezian said the cost of some of his household bills have halved since moving.

Jansezian has three children, two of whom are in college, and one a high school freshman. In Montana, he estimates that his utility bills and car insurance cost about half of what he paid back in Claremont.

“Stretch that out over 12 months and you just paid for significant schooling, college-aged kids, private school, fun, entertainment, travel,” he said. “You’re getting some money back, and you’re getting your quality of life back.”

For Jansezian, Montana’s largest city offered the bustle of a “big vibrant town,” as well as ski resorts, hiking trails, rivers, and lakes – and an end to his grinding two-hour round commute.

A woman hikes up a path dotted with tall trees.
Krikor Jansezian was attracted to Billings’s close proximity to hiking trails, ski resorts, and rivers.

“You reflect on your ageing body, 50 years old and two hours sitting in the car. And you pull into your driveway and you just feel depleted, no energy,” he said.

Now, Jansezian travels less than 15 minutes each way to get to work.

However, there are some aspects of Californian life that Jansezian misses: There are fewer restaurant options and his family has to shop more online, he said. Wine, too, is more limited.

A woman holds her bright blue bicycle outside the glass-walled front of the Big Dipper Ice Cream in Billings, Montana.

“Some of the wine clubs from California don’t ship to Montana. That’s a big bummer when you need your wine,” he said. “So you have to go and adapt and get the wines that come here.”

But the Billings hospitality? That’s readily available.

“You can be at a restaurant, and people strike up conversation,” Jansezian said. “Just casual and comfortable, warm, inviting.”

“It’s the kindest community I’ve ever been in,” he added.

Two people walk their black dog along a hiking trail which overlooks Billings, Montana under a dark blue sky.
Krikor Jansezian said that he has his “quality of life back” after moving to Billings in March.

Still, moving to Billings has required some adjustments.

“I told my wife, don’t honk the horn’. Nobody honks. Even if you miss the red light and it turns green and you’re sitting there for another five seconds,” Jansezian said. “It’s very strange.”

How to fix a disabled iPad by connecting to iTunes or Finder

apple ipad 4
You can’t get into a disabled iPad without the password or resetting it.

  • If your iPad says it’s disabled, you’ll need to connect it to Finder or iTunes to restore it.
  • Typing the wrong passcode too many times will disable your iPad temporarily or permanently.
  • Once you connect your disabled iPad to Finder or iTunes, you’ll have to erase and recover all of its data.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Passwords and passcodes help protect our devices from falling into the wrong hands. But it also means that if you enter your own iPad’s passcode wrong too many times, you’re the one who’ll be locked out.

If your iPad says it’s disabled, it means that you’re totally locked out. At this point, the only way to re-enable your iPad is to either wait (assuming it’s given you a time limit) or reset the iPad using your computer. And if you don’t know your password, resetting the iPad is your only option.

How to restore a disabled iPad with Finder or iTunes

The exact steps to restore your iPad will depend on which iPad model you own, and whether you have a Mac or PC.

1. Turn off your iPad. You can do this on an iPad with a Home button by holding the Lock button at the top of the iPad, then swiping on the Power Off slider that appears. On an iPad without a Home button, hold the Lock button and either Volume button, then swipe the Power Off slider.

2. Plug your iPad into a computer and then put it into Recovery Mode.

  • If you have an iPad with a Home button, press and hold both the Home and the Lock buttons at the same time until you see the Recovery Mode screen appear.
  • If you have an iPad without a Home button – this type of iPad uses Face ID – quickly press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and then hold the Lock button until you see the Recovery Mode screen appear.

Put your iPad into Recovery Mode.

3. If you’re on a PC, open iTunes and click the tiny iPad icon in the top-left. If you’re on a Mac, open a Finder window and click your iPad’s name in the sidebar.

4. You should see a pop-up explaining that your iPad has encountered a problem and needs to either be updated or restored. Select Restore, and confirm your choice.

You’ll want to restore your iPad, not just update it.

5. Keep your iPad connected and wait for your PC or Mac to restore the device. Depending on your computer and internet speeds, this could take a few minutes.

The restoration and update could take a while.

6. Once it’s done, your iPad should restart automatically. At this point, it should act as if you’re setting it up for the first time. Go through the steps to set it up, and if you have a backup saved to iCloud, use that to recover your data.

Alternatively, you can open Find My on the iCloud website, select your iPad, and click Erase. As long as your iPad is connected to the internet, this should delete everything on it – including the passcode.

I’m starting grad school soon and these are the 15 college school supplies that are helping me feel prepared

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

Side by Side of Gareen Puglia and grad school starter pack products, including Red Co Journal with Embossed Heart and Motivational Water Bottle
The supplies I bought for graduate school include a durable notebook, jump rope, 1-gallon water bottle, hand sanitizer, and journal.

  • I’m heading back to school for my master’s degree and needed to organize my shopping list.
  • I divided my college supplies list into different categories to create a grad school starter pack.
  • Want more school supplies? Here are the best school notebooks to buy in 2021.

After graduating during a pandemic and working remotely for a year, I’m heading back to school as a graduate student at the Information Management and Systems program at UC Berkeley. After deferring for a year due to the pandemic, I’ve registered for my classes, signed a lease, and am almost ready for school.

But, along with many other grad students, I’m entering the academic world after a long time away, and all these new changes at once (like moving to a new city) have made my shopping list very chaotic.

After doing a bit of research and looking at my school’s requirements, I organized my list into four categories: Academic, Physical Health, Mental Health, and Fun, because part of being successful in a graduate program is also taking care of your mind, body, and soul.

Though this shopping list might look different for you depending on your preferences and your program, I found that assessing my needs based on these categories helped me figure out what I really needed. Think of it as a grad student starter pack, to help provide any inspiration you may need in getting ready for a rigorous (and exciting!) academic year ahead.

15 college and graduate school supplies to buy in 2021:

A laptop capable of a graduate student’s workload

Macbook Pro Apple Laptop

My laptop has been through my undergraduate research papers, internships, and one major tea spill. Let’s just say it’s time for an upgrade. My specific graduate program doesn’t list any specific laptop or technology requirements, so I opted for a MacBook Pro as a lifelong Mac user. You can check out our list of the best MacBooks here.

A physical planner to write out my busy schedule

Blue Sky 2021-2022 Academic Year Weekly & Monthly Planner

Though there is an abundance of different calendar apps, I enjoy physically writing down assignments and events in a planner (which some studies say boosts your memory). This Blue Sky planner has monthly and weekly pages to fill out, perfect for both social and academic purposes. You can also check out our list of the best planners here.

A classic notebook that got me through high school

Gareen Puglia holding Five Star 2 Subject College Ruled Solid Spiral Notebook (Academic Health)

I’ve been relying on Five Star notebooks since high school, picking a different color for each subject. To this day, I love their sleek feel and all the variations they have. Though I’ll be mostly be typing my notes on my new laptop, I love rewriting my notes as a study strategy. You can check out more of the best school notebooks here.

Colorful pens to make notes more exciting to look at

Colorful Papermate InkJoy pens

Like I’ve said before, I love writing things down. Naturally, I need lots of pens — and the more colorful and fun, the better. Papermate InkJoy pens are a favorite of mine — I enjoy using them as an incentive to read the notes and study guides I make.

An app for daily meditiations

Calm app

I’ve always wanted to meditate (especially with school coming up), but have still felt unsure of where to begin. The Calm app was referred to me by my best friend as a good place to start. You can begin using the app with a seven-day free trial and purchase a year subscription for $69.99.

An Audible subscription to give my eyes a rest

Audible logo

I’ve found putting on an audiobook is a great way to unwind from a long day. Though I love revisiting old favorites like “Pride and Prejudice,” I recently listened to “Ariadne” and was absolutely hooked. After using Audible Plus via a 30-day free trial, I decided to keep my subscription for $7.95 a month.

A comforting drink to bookend my day

Product image of Dunkin' Original Blend Medium Roast

Coffee wasn’t always my favorite, but I’ve grown into my taste for it. My go-to — a cup of Dunkin’s Original Blend paired with oat milk and cinnamon — is my ideal comfort drink. Though I enjoy the ritual of brewing a pot of coffee, instant coffee is also a great quick option. You can check out our list of the best instant coffee here.

A separate notebook for journaling

Gareen Puglia holding Five Star 2 Subject College Ruled Solid Spiral Notebook (Mental Health)

I like to journal when I’m feeling overwhelmed to focus and center my emotions. I’ve used this Red Co. notebook as a means of coping with stress and anxiety during the pandemic and will continue to write in it as a means to combat potential impostor syndrome or other stressors I might experience during my graduate program. If you like having more guidance via writing prompts, these anxiety journals can be a great option, too.

Masks for when I travel to campus

Black disposable masks (50 pack)

Since my graduate program is hybrid, I’ll be attending some in-person classes. Naturally, I’m stocking up on masks and have been using these from Amazon throughout the pandemic. Though I have reusable ones too, if I’m in a hurry and haven’t done my laundry, theses are a great option. You can check out our list of the best masks here.

Hand sanitizer that almost doubles as perfume

Gareen Puglia holding Trader Joe's Hand Sanitizer Spray (Physical Health)

I do not leave my house without hand sanitizer and love the Trader Joe’s Hand Sanitizer Spray. My favorite scent is lavender— it smells so good, I sometimes pretend it’s my perfume. You can check out our list of best hand sanitizers here.

A motivational water bottle to make sure I’m staying hydrated

Gareen Puglia holding Fidus Large 1 Gallon Motivational Water Bottle (physical health)

This lighthearted, motivational 1-gallon water bottle (which has encouraging messages like “Don’t Give Up” and “Feeling Awesome”) has become my greatest sidekick. It’s helped me stay accountable when it comes to hydration and is great to use around the house. I’ll fill it up each morning and add fresh strawberries or mint leaves if I want to kick it up a notch. Though this bottle is heavy, it’s perfect to leave on my desk and I won’t need to move it around too much in my apartment.

Jump rope for exercise that isn’t running

Gareen Puglia holding Jump rope

I decided to pick one physical activity to do every day that doesn’t involve running. I landed on jump roping as an alternative — like running, the equipment needed is easy to store and use anywhere. Taking a jump rope break during the day has been a great way to really move around during the workweek, and I’ll continue to take at least 10 minutes a day to do it during grad school.

A too-cute mini rice cooker for mealprepping in style

Pink mini rice cooker

I was so excited to buy cooking supplies for my new apartment and fell in love with this mini DASH rice cooker/steamer. Though I’ve become a much better cook this past year, I might not have time to go full out in the kitchen when school deadlines become overwhelming. I was drawn to its bright millennial pink color and am actually excited to use it in meal prepping throughout the week. This tool will provide me the ease I need to enjoy cooking dinner, rather than the task stressing me out.

Fun rug to spice up my studio apartment

Sunflower rug mat

In an attempt to fill my space with things that bring me joy, I found myself smiling when I saw this fun floral rug. Since I will be working predominantly from home in my hybrid graduate program, any purchase to brighten up my room is a welcome investment.

Mugs that remind me of campus

Two University of California Berkeley mug

I’ve always been a mug person and found these adorable UC Berkeley Map mugs on Etsy. They’re perfect for drinking my daily coffee but also a great way for me to get familiarized with the UC Berkeley campus since I was unable to visit as much as I wanted during the pandemic.
