The 6 best disinfecting cleaners and wipes in 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

  • There isn’t one product that will disinfect your entire home; you need multiple cleaners.
  • We researched EPA-approved cleaners and spoke to an expert for recommendations and tips.

To help combat the spread of measles, the flu, colds, and other viruses and bacteria, you should always keep a quality disinfectant on hand.

“A disinfectant is a product that can kill the germs that cause sickness or illness,” said Brian Sansoni, SVP of Communication at the American Cleaning Institute. “Disinfectants contain antimicrobial ingredients that kill germs if surfaces are free from heavy soil, and disinfectant or antibacterial cleaners [also] contain ingredients for removing soil.”

There’s an endless selection of sprays, wipes, and other cleaning solutions on the market, so you want to look for the US Environmental Protection Agency registration number that ensures the product has met requirements for killing germs on hard, nonporous surfaces. All of the products in this guide are EPA approved.

Aside from checking EPA labels, the CDC recommends disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily, particularly countertops, desks, doorknobs, faucets, handles, keyboards, light switches, phones, sinks, tables, and toilets. Make sure to clean dirty surfaces with soap and water prior to disinfection.

See our disinfecting cleaner recommendations below, and for more detail on disinfecting products and household cleaning, check out our in-depth FAQ.

Here are the best disinfecting cleaners in 2021

Best disinfecting cleaner for hard surfaces

Purell Surface cleaner

With , you can kill foodborne-illness-causing bacteria with one swipe and no rinsing.

Pros: No rinsing needed, safe to use around food, kills 99.9% of bacteria, no harsh chemicals, fresh citrus scent, helps to reduce the risk of cross-contamination

Cons: Not readily available in many mass-market stores

Disinfectant sprays are especially helpful in the kitchen, where food-dwelling bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli can spread. While all EPA-registered disinfectants will kill those bacteria if used properly, they require an extra step of rinsing after spraying when used around food preparation areas, however, eliminates the need to rinse and is safe to touch nearly instantly. That being said, we should mention that rinsing any surface after applying disinfectant is currently recommended in the most recent CDC guidelines for protecting yourself against COVID-19.

Though it won’t completely deep-clean your kitchen, this product can be used on sealed granite, glass, laminate, stainless steel, or plastic surfaces. It only takes 30 seconds to kill over 40 organisms, including the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, norovirus, MRSA, and strep.

Best disinfecting cleaner for laundry

Lysol Laundry Sanitizer

If you’re looking for a product that’s bleach-free and will sanitize your laundry without damaging your clothes, Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Additive is your best bet.

Pros: Kills 99.9% of bacteria on fabric, can be used in any water temperature, can be used with any detergent, safe with any washable fabric, bleach-free

Cons: Those with sensitive skin may react to dyes or scents

According to the American Cleaning Institute’s new laundry guidelines, sanitizing laundry is important if someone in your home is ill or has a compromised immune system.

While chlorine bleach is effective at killing bacteria, it damages colorful clothes and synthetic fabrics. Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Additive contains a phenolic disinfectant that’s safe to use at any water temperature, in both standard and high-efficiency machines, with any detergent, and on any washable fabric. Its crisp linen fragrance is an added bonus.

For the best results, the product and water must be in contact with the fabric for 16 minutes.

Best disinfecting cleaner for non-washable goods

Lysol disinfectant spray

Available in a dozen scents, Lysol Disinfectant Spray kills 99.9% of bacteria on fabrics and hard surfaces.

Pros: Kills 99.9% of bacteria, available in many fragrances

Cons: Surfaces used for food preparation and children’s toys must be rinsed with water before use

Lysol Disinfecting Spray isn’t just an air freshener: It’s a powerful disinfectant that kills bacteria but is safe to use on hard, non-porous surfaces; soft surfaces; and fabrics. For best results, pre-clean your surface, hold the can six to eight inches away, and spray for three to four seconds. Lysol will typically take three minutes to disinfect, but to eradicate traces of the Norovirus, it’s best to leave it on for 10.

If crisp linen is not your thing, there are many other scents to choose from, including lavender and waterfall. You can also use the spray to deodorize items like gym bags, shoes, and carpets.

Best disinfecting wipes

Clorox Wipes

Clorox’s Disinfecting Wipes not only kill almost 100% of germs, they also absorb greasy messes and help erase embedded stains.

Pros: Kills 99.9% of bacteria in 10 seconds; deodorizes; breaks down grease, soap scum, and grime

Cons: Not available in an unscented formula, must rinse down surfaces when used in food preparation areas, wipes dry out if you use them too long

Disinfecting wipes offer a simple, mess-free way to clean surfaces without the use of liquid disinfectants and cleaning tools.

While all Clorox wipes contain ingredients that kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria on hard nonporous surfaces like acrylic, glass, and vinyl, Clorox Disinfecting Wipes also absorb greasy messes and gently scrub away dried-on stains, soap scum, and grime.

We should mention that the wipes do tend to dry out after a few minutes. If you’re cleaning a bathroom, you’ll typically use one wipe for the sink area, another one for the toilet, and a third (or third and fourth) for the shower. After wiping an area down, allow it to air dry to thoroughly disinfect against viruses and bacteria. It takes about 10 seconds to eliminate cold and flu viruses, E. coli, Salmonella, strep, MRSA, and the organism that can cause whooping cough.

Best disinfecting cleaner for toilet bowls

Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner with bleach

Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach allows you to clean and disinfect your bowl in a single step.

Pros: Removes toilet bowl stains, kills 99.9% of bacteria, angled nozzle for reaching under the bowl rim, fresh scent

Cons: Not safe to use near children or pets

Cleaning your toilet bowl is essential for proper hygiene and, while many cleaners effectively remove watermarks and stains, they may not properly disinfect. Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach disinfects, deodorizes with its fresh scent, and kills 99.9% of toilet bowl germs.

The disinfectant’s powerful clinging gel will eradicate tough stains and the angled nozzle is perfect for giving your bowl a deep clean. It’s non-abrasive and septic-safe, though children and pets shouldn’t be near your toilet bowl while cleaning.

Best disinfecting cleaner for pet messes

Clorox Pet Solutions Stain & Odor Remover

Clorox Pet Solutions Stain & Odor Remover is tough on deep-rooted stains but gentle and safe to use around dogs, cats, and other household pets.

Pros: Effectively removes stains, safe to use around pets, bleach and fragrance-free, helps to prevent re-soiling

Cons: Must purchase a spray bottle, not recommended for brass or natural marble surfaces

Clorox Pet Solutions Stain & Odor Remover is effective at removing tough pet messes like drool, feces, urine, and vomit, and it’s safe to use around your furry friends (as long as you take a few precautions). “It’s fine to use a regular disinfectant or bleach on bowls or pet toys with hard surfaces — you’ll just want to rinse the surfaces with water after they’ve dried,” Sansoni said. For more information on pet-safe products, check out our FAQ.

Simply pour the solution into a reusable spray bottle to clean pet bedding, carpets, clothing, flooring, furniture, travel crates, and upholstery. Then allow it to sit for five to 10 minutes before rinsing or wiping the area down with a clean, damp cloth. It’s bleach- and fragrance-free and wonderful at eliminating odors that tend to stubbornly linger. Regularly using this disinfectant may help your pet remember not to go back to re-soil the same spot.

FAQs

Brian Sansoni, SVP of Communication at the American Cleaning Institute, gave us some helpful information on assessing the quality of a disinfectant.

What ingredients should I look for in a disinfectant?

Sansoni said that some of the more active ingredients found within disinfectant cleaners include sodium hypochlorite, ethanol, pine oil, hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, and quats, otherwise known as quaternary ammonium compounds. For efficacy, be sure to visit the manufacturer’s website, look for the product in SmartLabel (a digital shopping tool where you can find detailed info that won’t fit on your standard cleaning product’s packaging), and check out the American Cleaning Institute’s guide on how to read a product label.

In addition to the ingredients listed above, your disinfectant of choice may include a combination of surfactants, builders, solvents, enzymes, fragrances, preservatives, pH adjusters, and thickeners or foam enhancers.

Do disinfecting cleaners kill the coronavirus?

There are a number of disinfectant products that can be effective against the coronavirus on hard, nonporous surfaces, in accordance with the EPA Viral Emerging Pathogen Policy. Visit EPA-registered disinfectant products to use against Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) for more information.

Will alcohol kill germs?

Alcohol solutions need to contain at least 70% alcohol to be effective on hard surfaces against the coronavirus. Read the labels on alcohol-based products, and be sure to reach for isopropyl alcohol and not ethanol, which is used in cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.

You’ll want to pre-clean the surface with soap and water. Then, apply the alcohol solution to the surface — without diluting it — and let it air dry for at least 30 seconds before wiping.

It’s important to never mix isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol — which is typically 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water — with bleach since it will create chloroform, which is toxic.

What surfaces can I use rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol on?

Rubbing alcohol and isopropyl alcohol can liquify and damage finished surfaces since isopropyl alcohol is a solvent. Sansoni advises against using either on painted, shellacked, lacquered, or varnished surfaces, including treated wood.

However, rubbing alcohol can be a great stain treatment for certain fabrics and can remove ink, grass, grease, or sap. While it’s good for carpet, Sansoni doesn’t recommend rubbing alcohol on materials like acetate, rayon, wool, and silk.

Do all-purpose cleaners kill germs?

A traditional all-purpose cleaner is designed to lift dirt off of surfaces, but it won’t completely disinfect the area you’re cleaning. Stick with a disinfectant designed to kill bacteria and germs. Keep in mind, however, that disinfectants won’t make surfaces shine like an all-purpose cleaner. Popular all-purpose cleaners that aren’t disinfectants include Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Multi-Surface Cleaner and Everspring’s Lemon & Mint All-Purpose Cleaner.

Will hydrogen peroxide kill germs?

Some registered disinfectants contain hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. The typical 3% hydrogen peroxide concentration found at drugstores can be used to disinfect surfaces. Pre-clean the surface before applying the liquid, and then let it air dry for at least a minute before wiping.

If you’re using a cleaner that contains hydrogen peroxide, check the product label for instructions on how long the cleaner needs to sit on the surface before wiping. Never mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar, bleach, or other cleaners.

Will vinegar kill germs?

While vinegar has bacteria-killing properties, it is not listed as an EPA-approved disinfectant.

Do “eco-friendly” or “natural” cleaners work as well as ones with more “powerful” chemicals?

“Eco-friendly” and “natural” are, more often than not, marketing terms rather than scientific ones. It all comes down to how the product is formulated, what ingredients it contains, and preference. When a product is labeled as “natural,” it typically means that it’s void of harmful chemicals.

What makes a cleaning product “pet-safe”?

According to Sansoni, products that are labeled as “pet-safe” are usually formulated with ingredients that are less harmful when unintentionally ingested.

It’s important to note that cleaning products are safe for people and pets when used as intended. However, because pets have a habit of putting their mouths on things they’re not supposed to, the added step of rinsing any leftover product off of surfaces can be helpful.

What is an odor eliminator?

An odor eliminator can either cover up an odor, absorb it, or kill odor-causing germs. Fragrances that cover an odor may be used in tandem with an odor absorber or a product that kills odor-causing bacteria. Some odor-eliminating sprays use compounds called cyclodextrins to trap odor molecules.

We’ve rounded up the best odor eliminators for your home.

Are wipes better than sprays?

This is a matter of preference. Some spray products may be available in a wipe version or vice versa, with some customers finding that one product is able to reach the space they want to clean better than the other. Sansoni mentioned there isn’t a benefit for letting a disinfectant stay on surfaces longer than recommended, and you should always follow the instructions on the label.

The 4 best bath mats we tested in 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

  • A well made bath mat is necessary for staying safe while stepping in and out of the shower.
  • To find the best options, we tested eight bath mats and spoke with a cleaning expert.
  • Our top pick is plush, absorbent, and available in multiple colors and size options.

Bath mats are a bathroom essential, but finding a high-quality mat can be challenging. To start, you’ll want to look for several features including high absorbency, durable construction, and a non-slip design. While a bath mat with efficient construction can be used for several months, a poorly made mat will slip and slide, take longer to dry, and can quickly become dangerous.

We put eight bath mats through extensive comfort, absorbency, and wash and dry tests to find the best options currently available. Our top picks are all easy to clean, stay in place, and range in material from soft cotton to plush, foot conforming memory foam. You can learn more about our extensive testing process in our methodology section.

We also spoke with Jon Gholian who is the founder of NYC-based cleaning company Cleany, to learn more about the best ways to care for your bath mats. Gholian also shared some tips and tricks to help guide you through the process of shopping for a bath mat which can be found in the FAQ section of this guide.

Here are the best bath mats of 2021

The best overall

Best bath mat overall 2021 Brooklinen

The Brooklinen Bath Mat is made of 100 percent cotton for a feel that is incredibly soft and absorbent.

Pros: Absorbent, great value, stylish design, plush feel

Cons: Longer dry time after washing, lighter colors may attract bathroom dust and dirt

The Brooklinen Bath Mat is designed to evoke the relaxing feel of the spa with its thick plush design. The mat is made of 100% Turkish cotton, which makes it surprisingly comfortable despite its towel-like appearance. With its simple design and multi-color availability, the mat can complement a wide variety of bathroom decor styles.

The mat performed extremely well during our absorbency tests and only felt slightly damp, even when multiple people used it after back-to-back showers. The mat did require more time in the dryer than other mats, but remained in great shape after three runs through the washer and dryer.

If you share a bathroom with multiple people or are looking to get away with cleaning your bath mat less often, we recommend choosing a darker colored mat, as the white shade we tested easily collected bathroom dust and dirt.

The best budget bath mat

Best budget bath mat 2021 Ikea

The fast drying Ikea TOFTBO Bath Mat is a great inexpensive mat option for those that share a bathroom with multiple people.

Pros: Unique design, fast drying, lightweight, absorbent, durable, great price

Cons: Slipped and slid a bit when stepping on it, design may not match well with more minimal decor styles

The Ikea TOFTBO Bath Mat offers a unique feel due to its fluffy microfiber fabric that provides a great amount of foot support. The mat performed the best in absorbency during testing, and was fully dried after being run through a regular dryer cycle. This absorbency is key for those that share a shower with more than one person, as it helps you avoid the uncomfortable feeling of stepping on a soaked mat.

The mat is also extremely durable despite its unique construction and suffered no damage after three washes. While the mat performed well during absorbency tests, it lacks a non-slip backing and did move a small amount when stepped on. Ikea recommends using the STOPP anti-slip underlay to keep the mat firmly in place.

The best decorative bath mat

Best decorative bath mat Society6

Available in an endless assortment of designs, the Society6 Summer Fern/Simple Modern Watercolor Bath Mat is just one example of the design possibilities available when shopping with the brand.

Pros: Available in multiple designs, skid-proof backing

Cons: Is not the most absorbent mat

While minimal bath mats with simple designs can complement a wide variety of bathroom decor, Society6’s bath bats (we tested the Summer Fern/Simple Modern Watercolor design) will add a fun pop of color to any bathroom. Society6 allows customers to support independent artists by buying home products that feature their designs.

Regardless of what design you choose, you’ll get the same base bath mat: a plush, microfiber and memory foam mat with curved edges. Its bath mats were one of the few we tested that feature a non-slip backing which kept the mat in place.

After running three showers in a row during testing, the mat did feel uncomfortably soaked through, which means it may not be the best choice for shared bathrooms. However, even when the mat was extremely wet, the non-slip coating kept it from slipping and sliding.

The mat washed and dried well but kept its shape better when air dried instead of being placed in the dryer, which caused the mats’ ends to curl up a bit.

All in all, if you’re looking to add a decorative statement piece to your bathroom, Society6’s bath mats offer good quality and unique designs.

The best memory foam bath mat

Best memory foam bath mat 2021 Target

Target’s Velveteen Memory Foam Bath Rug is made of comfortable memory foam that contours to your feet.

Pros: Extremely soft, non-slip backing, available in multiple sizes, lightweight

Cons: Not the best option for shared bathrooms

The Velveteen Memory Foam Bath Rug was by far the softest, most comfortable mat we tested. Not only is it made of plush memory foam, it’s also topped with a soft, velvet-like fabric that makes the mat feel even cozier.

The mat worked well at absorbing water, but repeatedly felt soaked and uncomfortable to stand on after being used for three showers in a row, which isn’t great if you share a bathroom with multiple people. The mat has a PVC latex backing that kept it in place even when it was extremely wet.

The mat washed well and kept its softness and plushness through multiple washes. I tried both air drying it and machine drying it, and it kept its shape with both methods.

What else we tested

Best bath mats in 2021 what else we tested

What else we recommend and why

Boll & Branch Spa Bath Mat: This mat had the feel of a softer towel and performed about average during comfort testing. The mat worked well at absorbing water but did slip and slide a bit when wet and when dry. Overall, the mat remained damage free and soft after going through multiple washes, making it a great option for those who are looking to splurge when shopping for a new bath mat.

Parachute’s Classic Turkish Cotton Tub Mat: This mat felt comfortable and warm when stood on and performed well throughout testing. The mat worked well at absorbing water and didn’t slip or slide much when stepped on after showering. While this cotton mat washed and dried well, it did have a few loose fibers that were pulled out after running the mat through many cleaning tests. This did not have a major impact on the mat’s overall performance and it remained in great condition.

What we don’t recommend and why

Coyuchi Air Weight Organic Bath Mat: This bath mat was not very comfortable or plush feeling and moved around quite a bit when we stood on it after showering. The mat was okay at absorbing water but did get completely soaked through after multiple showers. The mat washed well but lost its softness through the multiple wash and dry tests, leaving it feeling rough and stiff.

Signature Living Store Bamboo Bath Mat: This bamboo bath mat was surprisingly comfortable despite being made of wood. It also has a non-slip design which worked well when the mat was wet and dry. However, our main issue with this mat is its lack of absorbency. The mat has open slats which led to water falling through the mat onto the floor, which can cause floor damage over time.

Our testing methodology

Best bath mats in 2021 testing methodology

We put all eight bath mats through the same five tests:

Comfort: While using each mat as part of our normal showering routine, we observed how comfortable the material was to stand on.

Absorbency: We also noted how wet each mat felt after showering and if any mats became slippery and started sliding. Each mat was tested in a communal bathroom shared by three people, who regularly took back-to-back showers.

Dry time: Every morning we checked to see if each mat had completely dried overnight, and if any mats were still wet.

Cleaning: We washed and dried every mat three times according to its care instructions and inspected each mat to see how it held up. We cleaned the wood mat three times with a wood safe cleaner and then checked the mat for any signs of damage.

Durability: After regular use and multiple trips through the washing machine, we noted any damage that occurred over the testing period and ranked the mats accordingly.

What we look forward to testing

iDesign Formbu Bamboo Floor Mat: While the slatted bamboo bath mat we tested easily allowed water to spill onto the bathroom floor, we liked the concept of a solid wood bath “mat.” iDesign’s wood bath mat doesn’t have any slatted openings, meaning the shower water will simply evaporate off of the mat. Due to its low maintenance and simplicity, we are looking forward to testing it as a wood option.

: This mat is designed for max comfort and support, and the brand claims it gets softer the more you wash it. The mat is available in several colors including beachy blues and rustic reds and greens.

Gorilla Grip Store Gorilla Grip Original Luxury Chenille Bathroom Rug Mat: We tested two bath mats with a non-slip backing and are looking to test this Gorilla Grip mat; it’s constructed with soft chenille, available in multiple shades, and is equipped with a strong rubber backing.

FAQs

Best bath mats in 2021 FAQs

What are the best materials for bath mats?

The best bath mat materials are mainly based on preference with a few exceptions. If you share a bathroom with multiple people you’ll want to purchase a mat made of absorbent materials that have a quick drying time. Gholian recommends choosing cotton or bamboo over other materials. “Most people prefer the foam mat nowadays for comfort but this takes longer to dry than cotton or bamboo which easily absorbs water,” said Gholian. He also recommends choosing a mat that has an anti-slip backing, which will help keep the mat in place even if it does get soaked.

What size bath mat should I buy?

The size of your bath mat should be based solely on the size of your bathtub or shower. You’ll want to ensure that your mat covers the entire floor surface that you step on when stepping in or out of the shower. A mat that’s too small will look awkward and will lead to wet floors, while an oversized mat will also reflect poorly on the room’s design. A good rule of thumb is to keep a few inches of space between the bath mat and the wall.

How should you clean your bath mat and how often should you clean your bath mat?

Surprisingly, you should aim to wash your bath mat more frequently than many of us would think. Gholian strongly suggests washing your mat at least every 2-3 weeks, but prefers to wash his bath mats weekly for the most thorough cleaning.

Of course, machine washing and drying can impact the longevity of your mat. If you’d like to keep your bath mats for longer, you can opt to hand wash them with a gentle detergent and simply hang them to dry. However, using a gentle wash and dry cycle will also work well.

You’ll also want to pay close attention to each mat’s care instructions (most mats are machine washable) and follow them closely. Many mats discourage the use of strong detergents and cleaning aids such as fabric softener or bleach which can ruin the mat completely.

How often should you replace your bath mat?

When deciding when to replace your bath mat, you’ll want to do so “at least every 6 months if not a little bit sooner at that point,” said Gholian. You may be able to get a little more longevity out of your mats if you have a few you rotate between.

How can you find bath mats that are both stylish and functional? Is it necessary to splurge to find a great bath mat?

Choosing a bath mat style that complements your bathroom’s decor is up to your personal preference. Retailers like Society6 offer a wide range of designs and colors if you’re looking for a more colorful bath mat or bathroom rug. Other retailers such as Brooklinen, Target, and Ikea offer neutral colored bath mats with simple designs that will fit well in most bathrooms.

If you plan on cleaning and replacing your bath mat as frequently as Gholian suggests, you’ll want to focus your shopping efforts on finding a bath mat that is well made, comfortable, and affordable enough to replace at least 1-2 times a year.

The biggest success from the show is, without a doubt, the Scrub Daddy. It’s also the top pick in our cleaning sponge buying guide

So what makes this smiley scrubber so renowned? The foam adjusts to the temperature (firm in cold water, soft in warm water) so you can switch between tough scrubbing and light cleaning, and it won’t scratch even delicate surfaces like glass, ceramic, and leather. You can use them anywhere, not just for dishes.

Bottle Bright Cleaning Tablets (12-count)

We’re big advocates of using reusable water bottles and thermoses, but they’re not always easy to clean. To clean out your bottle properly — that means all the gunk hiding in the nooks and crannies, not to mention odor buildup — fill it with warm water and drop in one Bottle Bright tablet. After 15-30 minutes, the tablet dissolves and wipes out stains, germs, and residue so your bottle is squeaky clean again.

32 eco-friendly alternatives for things you use every day

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Lifestyle Photo Earth Day
  • While climate change has gained mainstream traction, research suggests it remains a partisan issue.
  • Individual responsibility isn’t a silver bullet, but it can help strengthen the environmental movement.
  • If you’re interested in adopting more eco-friendly habits, you can browse 32 ideas below.

Climate change has entered the mainstream conversation. Up 44% from 2009, six out of 10 Americans said in a survey that global climate change is a major threat to the country. In 2019, Time’s Person of the Year was then 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, the internationally known environmental activist.

But while more Americans say protecting the environment and dealing with global climate change should be top priorities for the president and Congress – and a majority of them already see at least some local effects of climate change – it remains a deeply partisan issue, meaning grassroots efforts and individual actions take on heightened importance.

And it’s surprisingly simple to make positive changes to your lifestyle just by figuring out where to start. Instead of using a K-Cup, swap it for a reusable coffee filter. Out of laundry detergent? Try one with better ingredients. You don’t have to subsist on whatever your backyard garden grows to make a difference or feel guilty that your trash doesn’t fit in a mason jar. Try to shop local when possible, only buy what you need, bike or walk or use public transportation when able, fix what you own before replacing it, and eat less meat. While individual responsibility isn’t a silver bullet and isn’t effective when it distracts people from the outsized impact of corporate and political responsibility, it can help expand and strengthen the political movement for environmentalist practices.

Even if you just make one change rather than turning your entire household eco-friendly overnight, you’re working to build better habits in your corner of the world.

If you want to replace everyday essentials with eco-friendly alternatives without any inconvenience, check out the 32 below:

Swimwear made from recycled materials

Everlane swim collection

Clothing retailer Everlane just released its first line of swimwear, and every item in the collection is comprised of 82% regenerated nylon derived from recycled plastic. It’s part of the retailer’s initiative to remove virgin plastic from its supply chain in 2021. The swimwear collection offers seven styles and eight colors that you can mix and match.

The Square-Neck One-Piece (small)
Allbirds footwear

allbirds wool runner

Allbirds gained fame for being known as the “world’s most comfortable shoes” (a claim we find ourselves agreeing with) and their commitment to sustainability.

The cult-favorite startup uses super soft, moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating merino wool for its iconic wool runners and tree fiber for its Tree line (sourced from South African farms that minimize fertilizer and rely on rainfall instead of irrigation).

We’ve tried the tree loungers and runners as well as the wool runners and loungers, and even the newly-launched clothing line, and we don’t think you can really go wrong.

Read our full reviews of nearly every item Allbirds has ever made.

Reusable, organic cotton dish towels

Sur la table ORGANIC COTTON KITCHEN TOWELS

If it doesn’t have to be single-use, it probably shouldn’t be. Using 100% organic cotton dish towels is a great substitute to paper towels, as you can throw them in for a wash in the washing machine repeatedly.

Reusable grocery bags

816WQVoO7bL._SL1320_

Each year, we use an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags around the world.

Using reusable grocery bags is a simple way to cut down on the habit without missing out on convenience — if you make sure to only buy enough to meet your needs, and remember to bring them every time.

Some grocery stores even offer incentives for people who bring their own bags, and some states have banned plastic bags

Rechargeable batteries

71CIYd2Bg4L._SL1262_

Batteries are made up of a variety of chemicals, some of which are toxic and can cause soil and water pollution. To prolong the usage of your batteries and keep them out of landfills, you may want to look into rechargeable ones.

If you need to check how to dispose of electronics you no longer need, check out this list of stores with incentives for recycling or are better equipped to dispose of electronics than the average person.

A long-lasting toothbrush with a detachable brush head

BoieUSA toothbrush 1

Not only does a Boie toothbrush have silver embedded into the bristles to kill germs, but the startup is also making a much more environmentally friendly option.

All of Boie’s toothbrushes are made out of a rubber-like material that cleans your teeth more gently and effectively than alternatives and is built to last twice as long as a regular brush, so you have to replace it less often. Boie brushes are also designed with detachable brush heads, so you can replace only that without having to buy an entirely new brush every time.

You can also check out Bite’s $12 bamboo brush pack, which comes with two toothbrushes with detachable heads.

A great reusable water bottle

81M+pHXMpzL._SL1500_

Even though recycling programs exist, 91% of the water bottles we use every year wind up in a landfill. And we use about a million per minute. Grab a cool water bottle you’ll enjoy using and skip the plastic disposable bottles.

A cycling helmet that raises money for 1% for the Planet

Explore Thousand Helmet

Cycling brand thousand launched a special Climate Collection of its signature Heritage helmet to raise money for 1% for the Planet, a foundation dedicated to raising awareness about climate change and sustainability. The collection features three unique colorways, each symbolizing a specific element of the planet. Coastal Blue represents Earth’s oceans, Terra Cotta Earth’s clay, and Arctic Grey Earth’s polar environments. The helmets sell for $89 with $10 from every purchase going to 1% for the Planet.

A showerhead that uses 70-75% less water than what you have now

showering

Putting in low-flow fixtures and taking shorter showers can reduce your water consumption by at least 50% and save you about $145 every year.

If you’re looking for the most buzz-worthy and luxe of options making a difference in the space, you’d do well to look at Nebia — a Kickstarter-funded startup that counts some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley as investors (including Tim Cook of Apple and Eric Schmidt of Google). You also might have seen it in the upscale fitness world of Equinox gyms.

The Nebia Spa Shower 2.0 maximizes the water that comes into contact with your skin by atomizing it, and Nebia claims the shower lends twice as much coverage as a standard shower and saves 65% of water. You can read more about it here

Another inexpensive option is a showerhead by Niagra, which the company claims uses up to 75% less water than typical “low-flow” showerheads. It also uses patented pressure compensation technology so there’s always a consistent flow rate regardless of available water pressure — and it’s guaranteed for 10 years.

Biodegradable trash bags

91tqtYch4GL._SL1500_

These trash bags are 100% compostable, meet the stringent requirements of municipal composting programs, and are BPI certified. For reference, they’re almost half the price of Glad bags (also 13 gallon, also 50-count).

Buy carbon credits to offset your lifestyle

reformation carbon

Feeling guilty about a destination bachelorette trip you took this year? Already live an extremely eco-friendly lifestyle and still want to help?

Reformation lets you purchase climate credits (carbon offsets) on its site. Its partner, NativeEnergy, will direct your purchase to support projects that actively reduce CO2 emissions.

You’ll also get a $100 Reformation credit when you switch to wind energy.

Reusable straws

61XWed4880L._SL1001_

According to the National Park Service, you could fill over 125 school buses with the straws Americans use every single day (500 million in all).

Using disposable utensils of any kind introduces a lot of unnecessary waste into the environment, but straws are a particularly easy fix.

An Earth Day package

dggdgg

Even if you can’t live a completely eco-lifestyle, you can still offset some carbon footprint by planting trees. Canadian sustainable apparel maker Tentree has an Earth Day package that will plant 50 trees, which can help offset 7.7 tons of CO2. — Les Shu, guides editor

Ballpoint pens made out of recycled water bottles

Need a couple of pens around the house? Grab a few that were made from recycled water bottles (86% PCR).

A programmable thermostat that lets you know if you’re saving energy

71gFTZA1QGL._SL1000_

Programmable thermostats can save up to $150 a year in energy costs when used properly.

Not only does work with Amazon Alexa voice control, but it was also the first one to earn an Energy Star. Since your thermostat supposedly controls half your energy bill (more than appliances or electronics), it’s a great place to focus your attention if you want to cut down on use and costs. Using the Nest app (yes, there’s an app), you can view how much energy you use and why, so you can make the right decisions for you using your own energy history.

Plus, since most of us are busy and potentially beginners with this, Nest will display a leaf when you choose a temperature that saves energy.

Reusable coffee filters

81Yum3ifsFL._SL1500_

With the popularity of instant coffee systems like Keurig, single-serving pods have also seen an uptick.

Instead of popping in a new K-Cup every morning only to toss it into the waste bin, consider saving yourself space and money with your choice of fresh ground coffee and a reusable filter pod

Loose tea infuser

the best tea infuser overall

Love tea? look into a loose tea infuser to cut down on how many tiny disposable packets you rip open and throw away. Here are the best ones you can buy.

Shampoo, conditioner, and lotion

Screen Shot 2018 04 20 at 5.03.09 PM

With over 80 billion plastic bottles being disposed of around the world every year just from shampoo & conditioner alone, things like environmentally-conscious packaging are increasingly important.

If you’re looking for a single solid beauty routine —pun intended— New Zealand startup Ethique (French for “ethical”) makes sustainable beauty that works exceptionally well. And they’re available at Amazon.

Everything — from shampoo to lotion — comes in bar form. The bars last 2-5x longer than their bottled counterparts, dissolve completely, and come in entirely eco-friendly packaging (even the sleeves they arrive in are 100% dissolvable and compostable, so there’s zero consumer waste).

Overall, Ethique has prevented the manufacture and disposal of more than 350,000 plastic containers worldwide.

Natural laundry detergent

Method Laundry Detergent

If you want to introduce fewer chemicals to the water supply and your skin, you might look for a laundry detergent alternative.

Method’s detergent is made from naturally derived, plant-based ingredients and has a hypoallergenic formula. Its transparent bottle is recyclable and made from 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) materials. It’s tough on dirt and stains, but you won’t be introducing more chemicals to the environment or wearing traces of them next-to-skin.

You can also use the all-natural that comes in a reusable metal tin (which is what I personally use). Nellie’s is biodegradable, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, non-GMO, lasts for forever, and, of course, works really well also. You can find it on Amazon, but it’s typically cheaper at .

Reusable notebooks

81RsPO8O1fL._SL1500_

The US uses about 69 million tons of notebook paper each year. If you want to cut down on your own paper waste (and add some convenience and savings to your own life) you might be interested in Rocketbook’s forever reusable notebooks. This one can be written on with a special pen and wiped clean to be used new with moisture. It got rejected on Shark Tank, but I use my own many times throughout the day. Plus, you can use the app to digitize the notes you take — making it easier to keep a digital archival.

Instead of buying something new, look for something that already exists first — like previously owned designer goods on The Real Real. It’s also a great way to save money on premium goods.

Eco-friendly sheets

Cloud Brushed Organic Flannel Minimalist Set1

Coyuchi is a San Francisco startup that makes luxe, modern sheets that are also eco-friendly. The company has a partnership with Fibershed that supported closed-loop carbon farming practices at the local ranches that produce its Climate Beneficial Wool, and has now announced a partnership with White Buffalo Land Trust that supports regenerative agriculture.

A shower timer

Shower timer 1

This shower timer helps you keep an eye on how long you spend zoned out under gushing hot water. It can help you monitor yourself, so if your goal is to cut down on water and heating energy, you’ve got an easy way to adjust. You can also just set a timer on your phone, but if you’re looking for a shower radio, you can knock out both with this.

Solar powered phone charger

81CmEO1dKhL._SL1000_

Made of eco-friendly silicone rubber and ABS + PC material, this #1 best-seller solar charger is an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional rechargeable battery pack. It’s water-resistant and shock-proof, so it can go where you go (and soak up solar power while at it).

The company notes that it is comparatively slow for the solar charger to recharge via solar power, but if you’ve got the time to wait or hang it on a backpacking pack on a day trip, you can get the convenience of a charger without the guilt.

Compostable cutlery and bowls

91Owf jfQJL._SL1500_

If you absolutely need disposable cutlery and can’t carry a reusable metal kit everywhere you go, why not grab some that are compostable?

FirstChoice makes a great option, and donates 10% of its annual net profits to non-profit environmental organizations. The utensils are FDA approved and are 100% biodegradable.

Outlets that actually draw zero energy when turned off.

719tLplVBuL._SL1500_

This energy-saving power switch draws zero energy when the switch is flipped off.

An eco-friendly air dryer brush

51DlvvDjU6L._SL1000_

This brush is designed to act as a diffuser, drying hair 40% faster for less heat damage and faster prep time. It’s also made from recycled aluminum and plastic.

The packaging is made of 100% Tree-Free paper (20% cotton and 80% bamboo fibers), and the handles are made from bamboo, which is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world — making it a convenient naturally renewable resource.

An e-reader

Kinle

While the feel of a great paperback in hand is satisfying in and of itself, you might have an opportunity as an avid reader to cut down on a production cycle that uses ample paper and transportation. Unless you’re a regular patron of the library, an e-reader can help diminish the carbon footprint of someone who frequently buys new books.

We’ve got a guide to the best e-readers you can buy if you’re looking into one, and here’s a list of what each Kindle does to figure out which best fits your needs.

Natural cleaning products

blueland cleaning review 2

The cleaning products you use around the house can be full of environmentally harmful chemicals, and they may be some of the plastic products you throw away most frequently. If you want the same result but with less potential collateral damage, there are effective options to consider.

Uniquely J is an affordable, comprehensive option that spans the cleaning gamut and is comprehensive and affordable.

Blueland is a buzzy startup that makes reusable bottles and dissolvable cleaning tablets with non-toxic ingredients so you can cut down on your plastic waste and chemical exposure. While Blueland products are effective for general cleaning, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend using alcohol-based products to disinfect surfaces as they’re effective in killing viruses.

For tough cleaning, we’d recommend looking at CleanWell’s Disinfectant Spray. It’s EPA-approved for use on surfaces to protect against the novel coronavirus. It’s a botanical formula that cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes multi-surfaces and kills 99.9% of household germs, including cold and flu viruses. The package is also recyclable.

Reusable, non-plastic meal prep containers

91g8FfYvFgL._SL1500_

Instead of adding more plastic, grab some glass meal prep containers for a non-toxic solution.

You may also want to look into U Konserve for their low-impact, reusable lunch containers with moveable and/or removable dividers. You can also pick up reusable sandwich bags, like these from ChicoBag or unbleached paper sandwich snack bags.

Sustainable clothing

58e275d977bb70c3008b5d01 480 500

Instead of buying new every time you have an event, consider renting from Rent the Runway and get designer names at a much lower rate, without contributing to a huge pile of textile waste from a $20 fast-fashion dress you didn’t love. Or, if you do buy new, take a look at stores that repurpose recycled materials, like Cotopaxi and Girlfriend Collective, or companies reducing their overall footprint through eco-friendly practices like Everlane’s denim factory

The 10 best bathroom cleaning products of 2021

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Bathrooms are exposed to a host of germs, so cleaning yours with effective products is very important.

Let’s face it: cleaning the bathroom is never going to be the highlight of your day. But bathrooms are exposed to plenty of germs on a daily basis, and they aren’t going to clean themselves.

With a regular cleaning schedule and the right products, however, you can get your bathroom clean quickly and easily so you can move on to activities that are more enjoyable. Brian Sansoni, SVP of communication at The American Cleaning Institute, said there are many places in the bathroom we neglect to scrub, so it’s best to have a schedule.

“In general, you want to work from the top down and start from the farthest point from the door,” he said. “For products that need some time to work, like toilet cleaner, it can help to apply [it] first thing and let it sit before cleaning to reduce the need for elbow grease.” He also recommends wiping down the base of the toilet, behind the toilet, faucets and behind them, and baseboards.

To ensure your bathroom is sparkling, we researched and tested tons of cleaners to find the best bathroom cleaning products you can buy, including disinfecting wipes, a , an excellent shower cleaning spray, and an effective mop.

Here are the best bathroom cleaning products of 2021

The best cleaning products for your toilet

Clorox_ToiletWand

With Clorox Disinfecting Wipes and the Clorox ToiletWand Disposable Toilet Cleaning System, you’ll have your toilet clean and sanitized in no time.

Cleaning the toilet is undeniably unpleasant, but it doesn’t have to take long and or be difficult.

When it comes to cleaning the toilet, I’m a fan of use-and-toss products. I don’t want germ-infested sponges or rags in my cleaning closet. That’s why I love Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. They have a pleasing scent without being overwhelming, making quick work of wiping down the toilet from top to bottom, including underneath the seat.

As for the inside of the bowl, with the Clorox ToiletWand Disposable Toilet Cleaning System, all you have to do is click the disposable cleaning head into place, scrub around the inside of the toilet, toss the soiled cleaning head into the trash, and then store the reusable “wand” in the handy-dandy included caddy. And, voila, you have a clean and stain-free bowl.

The best shower curtains of 2021

A shower curtain with waterproof lining

N&Y home curtain

The N&Y HOME Ultimate Waterproof Fabric Shower Curtain is an all-around winner for most bathrooms for its good looks and dual functionality at an unbeatable price.

The N&Y HOME Ultimate Waterproof Fabric Shower Curtain is simple but everything you’ll ever need in a shower curtain. It’s machine-washable and made of 100% polyester, but what sets it apart is the interior PVC-free waterproof coating. That means if you prefer the look and feel of fabric liners but need the waterproof benefit of plastic ones, this might be the closest thing to getting both.

Looks aside, this option checks the other boxes that most people want in their curtain, including a reinforced top header to prevent rips and tears and magnets in the bottom hem to help prevent billowing — or worse, sticking to your legs. The curtain is available in the standard 72 x 72-inch size, as well as four additional narrow and extra-long sizes.

This curtain is a workhorse that should meet your basic shower curtain needs, and the clean white shade complements any bathroom decor. We’re calling it the best bang for your buck.

A universal white shower curtain

mDesign curtain

With a plush textured style that fits into any bathroom, the cotton-poly mDesign Waffle Weave Fabric Shower Curtain in Stone White is a can’t-go-wrong option at an affordable price point.

Scandi-inspired farmhouse? Modern minimalist city apartment? New baby’s nursery en suite? Whatever your bathroom’s scheme or theme, there’s a white curtain to match, and chances are the mDesign Waffle Weave Fabric Shower Curtain will fit right in.

We have millions of standard-issue white curtains to choose from, but this neutral Stone White color is neither too cold nor too warm, so it should feel right at home in most bathrooms. The soft cotton-poly fabric has a slightly weighted heft that lets the curtain drape and hang naturally. And its classic waffle texture feels comforting, fresh, and clean while adding a subtle element of style.

This isn’t a water-resistant curtain so you’ll need a liner, but it’s much lower maintenance than an all-natural cloth option. You’ll also be able to throw it in a cold wash cycle and a low-heat tumble dry without worrying too much about shrinkage and wrinkles. It comes in the standard 72 x 72-inch size, plus longer 72 x 84 and 72 x 96 options for taller ceilings.

A hookless shower curtain with detachable liner

Hookless curtains

Flex-on rings make the elegant extra easy to slip on and off the rod, and its snap-on liner doubles the convenience.

The cool thing about this — aside from its clean, elegant design and its machine-washable 100% polyester fabrication — is that hanging your curtain has never been faster or less annoying.

The rings on this curtain are designed to flex open, so you can easily slip your curtain onto the rod (or off again) in a matter of seconds. If that time-saving convenience isn’t enough to convert you away from hooks forever, it also comes with a detachable liner that snaps onto the curtain and goes inside the tub, so there’s no need to deal with a double rod (unless you want to, of course).

The curtain is available in a variety of styles, textures, designs, and fabrics (even satin) to match your aesthetic. Just be sure to check the care instructions if you opt for a different fabric, and keep in mind that certain styles only come in a 71 x 74-inch size.

A unique shower curtain

blue shower curtain Society6

With thousands of designs to choose from, Society6 is second to none for unique and one-of-a-kind shower curtains by independent artists.

Sometimes you want a shower curtain that just blends into your bathroom. But if you want something that stands out, then you’ll want to check out the curtains on Society6

Society6 is a marketplace for creative artists to sell their work on everyday products like phone cases, office supplies, yoga mats, and — you guessed it — shower curtains. By making a purchase, you’ll get to support independent artists like illustrator and muralist Alexandra Bowman, who created this gorgeous watercolor-style print, or poet Morgan Harper Nichols, who designs inspiring prints. And you’ll hang up a beautiful, eye-catching piece of art in what’s usually an under-decorated space.

The shower curtains themselves are made from machine-washable polyester, though some reviewers say the soft material has a plasticky feel to it. One thing to note is that they’re only available in the 71 x 74 size, so you’ll want to make sure that the bottom won’t drag on your bathroom floor before buying.

A shower curtain that feels custom made

Barossa design curtain

The Barossa Design Herringbone & Striped Fabric Shower Curtain has an intricate design that will subtly dress up your bathroom.

The Barossa Design Herringbone & Striped Fabric Shower Curtain is priced like a basic fabric liner, but it looks and feels way more luxurious thanks to its sheen and woven texture.

Made from a machine-washable polyester blend, the curtain is water repellant and won’t require an additional liner. And thanks to its textural pattern, silky finish, and cool white shade, it’s a quick way to elevate any bathroom in need of a crisp and clean pick-me-up.

With 11 sizes to choose from — from shower stall options to extra wide and long options — this curtain might also be the best looking and most precise fit for your bathtub or shower.

An eco-friendly fabric shower curtain

Quite Town

If you’re on the hunt for a sustainable and responsibly-made curtain with clean designs, you’ll fall in love with Quiet Town’s Organic Canvas Shower Curtains.

Let’s cut to the chase: At $148, this isn’t the kind of curtain you buy to replace two or three months down the line, but with Quiet Town — a small Brooklyn biz started by artists Lisa and Michael Fine — that’s the whole point.

The brand is also committed to sustainability, its machine-washable 100% canvas shower curtains, which are also available through West Elm, are made of domestically milled cotton that is organically grown in the US. Then the curtains are dyed locally and handmade in Brooklyn — same deal with its ultra-cool $62 EVA curtain

There’s nothing “assembly line” about their offerings — and that’s a welcome departure.

How to choose shower curtains

shower curtain Society6

First, choose a material that’s durable and easy to care for. According to Donna McMahon, there are three main types:

  • Natural fabric: These are your cotton, linen, canvas, hemp, and bamboo blends. A good quality cotton curtain is a top choice for most people, according to McMahon. Simply toss it in the wash on laundry day to keep it in good shape (other fabrics may have specific care instructions, though). The drawback is that they can be expensive — up to $60 and sometimes more — and cannot be used without a liner. All-natural cloth curtains need a protective liner to stay dry and mildew-free.
  • Polyester and polyblend: If you’re on a budget, curtains made out of polyester are another long-lasting and low-maintenance choice. They’re machine washable, quick-drying, and water-repellant, which means they don’t need a liner though they can double as one.
  • Plastic: Plastic curtains shouldn’t go in the wash and instead must be regularly wiped and scrubbed clean. They’re the cheapest option (most are under $20) and tend to be replaced frequently. They’re the most waterproof material of the bunch, so they’re usually used as liners but can work as standalone curtains too. Be sure to steer away from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), cautions McMahon, which contains a mix of chlorine, phthalates, and other chemicals that give vinyl plastic curtains that pungent headache-inducing smell. Plastic curtains made with PE (polyethylene), PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate), and EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) are safer alternatives, but when in doubt, “search for ‘PVC free’ in product descriptions,” says McMahon.

The rest is a matter of your personal taste. Natural fabric curtains drape beautifully and have a more elevated look, and polyester curtains can have a similar soft, woven-fabric feel.

In terms of colors, patterns, and prints, go with what makes you happy. If you really don’t know where to start, McMahon said, “Pick a curtain design that has a touch of the prominent color in your bathroom tile or other finishes to tie it all together. And if the tones of your bathroom are soft and subtle, a curtain that’s bolder in color can be the perfect contrast too.”

Keeping it simple with white though will never go out of style — just think of every hotel bathroom you’ve ever seen.

How to measure shower curtains

The standard size that fits most built-in tubs is 72 x 72 inches, but before you add your brand new curtain to your cart, break out the tape measure to make sure you’re getting the proper size.

  • Width: Measure along the entire length of the curtain rod and add 12 inches so the curtain can drape and extend nicely. For reference, the standard bathtub is about 60-inches long. Shower stalls will be narrower and clawfoot tubs will be longer because the curtain needs to fit around a full circular rod, says McMahon. For this, look for 180 x 70, or you can use two 72 x 72-inch curtains.
  • Height: The curtain height will also vary depending on what kind of shower you have, but generally the bottom hem should float at least one to two inches above the floor. “This allows air to circulate and prevent mold and mildew growth,” says McMahon. Measure from below the rod — or end of the shower curtain hooks — to the floor, then subtract at least two inches.

The 6 best toilet papers for every type of preference

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

  • High-quality toilet paper should be gentle and clean up messes without leaving anything behind.
  • Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper is soft, easy to tear, and stays strong when wet and dry.

Everyone seems to have a toilet paper brand that they remain loyal to. After all, if you’re going to apply the toilet paper “where the sun don’t shine,” you want it to treat you right.

Below, we rounded up tissue that is right for your comfort, budget, and shopping preferences. We also included the available roll quantities in a breakout box so you can customize how much you’d like to have on hand.

For additional advice on choosing the right toilet paper, plus tips for shopping for toilet paper online, scroll to the bottom of this guide.

Here is the best toilet paper of 2021

The best toilet paper overall

best toilet paper

Charmin’s Ultra Strong Toilet Paper is plush, strong, easy to tear, ultra-absorbent, and has built a faithful following with its consistent quality.

Pros: Soft, strong when wet and dry, rips cleanly from the roll, woven like a washcloth, Roto-Rooter-approved

Cons: Slow to dissolve

You might recognize Charmin Ultra Strong Toilet Paper from the series of commercials featuring bears with comfortable butts. As the name suggests, Ultra Strong is positioned as Charmin’s strongest two-ply toilet paper. Charmin advertises it as having washcloth-like cleaning abilities with four times the strength of “the leading bargain brand” when wet.

This durable and absorbent toilet paper is useful when your digestive system is having an off day and trips to the bathroom are frequent. And, if you’re concerned about a hardy toilet paper wreaking havoc on your plumbing, you’ll take comfort in knowing that Ultra Strong is Roto-Rooter-approved as septic- and clog-safe.

Though it’s strong whether wet or dry — and neatly rips from the roll —, the downside is that it takes a while to dissolve. That said, it might not be the best toilet paper for super finicky plumbing.

The best sustainable toilet paper

best toilet paper

If you’re looking for an affordable toilet paper that gets the job done and is wonderful for our planet, Seventh Generation 100% Recycled 2-Ply Toilet Paper is a quality option.

Pros: 100% recycled; bleach-free; no added dyes, inks, or fragrances; Rainforest Alliance-certified, sewer- and septic-safe

Cons: Not as soft as other options

Seventh Generation is known for producing eco-friendly household items that won’t break the bank, and the company’s 100% Recycled 2-Ply  Toilet Paper is no exception. It’s Rainforest Alliance-certified, too, which means it was produced with social, economic, and environmental sustainability practices in mind.

This two-ply, minimum 50% post-consumer recycled fiber toilet paper is free of fragrances, inks, and dyes, so it’s a good option for sensitive skin. Because the toilet paper is unbleached, there’s much less water and energy used in the manufacturing process. Plus, it’s safe for sewer systems, septic systems, and low-flow toilets, like those found in campers and RVs.

Though it’s not as plush as other options, Seventh Generation is great for your bathroom if you’re looking to limit your carbon footprint.

The best budget toilet paper

best toilet paper scott

Scott’s 1,000 Sheets Per Roll Toilet Paper is ideal for people who want to save money, care about the environment, and don’t like lint.

Pros: Affordable, eco-friendly, dissolves easily, minimal lint

Cons: Somewhat abrasive

Despite Scott’s 1,000 Sheets Per Roll Toilet Paper‘s one-ply stature and quick-to-dissolve design, it stays strong and leaves behind little lint. It’s what we use in our house and Scott is a great, sustainable option that’s certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, too. Scott 1,000 dissolves quickly and easily while maintaining strength while wet. It’s also recommended for people with RVs and sensitive septic tanks who aren’t looking for luxury — it breaks down quickly but is still rough on the skin.

The best toilet paper for sensitive skin

cottonelle slide

If most toilet papers leave a burning sensation in your rear after a thorough cleaning, consider treating yourself with Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care  Toilet Paper, which is triple-thick and hypoallergenic.

Pros: Soft, made with plant-based fibers, hypoallergenic, paraben-free, made without harsh chemicals and dyes, sustainably sourced, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, three times thicker and two times more absorbent than the average brand, biodegradable, clog-free, septic- and sewer-safe

Cons: None

Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care Toilet Paper has a cushion-like, rippled texture, which is supposed to clean better while remaining comfortable, strong, and soft. It’s ideal for sensitive skin because it’s hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and made without harsh chemicals and dyes.

Cottonelle’s toilet paper is also sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. And, because this two-ply tissue is three times thicker and two times more absorbent per sheet than the average brand, you’ll appreciate its ultra-plush feel.

Cottonelle is also biodegradable, clog-free, and septic- and sewer-safe so, even though it’s a thicker toilet paper, it’s just as safe to use as it is soft.

The best toilet paper subscription

reel slide

If you never want to run out of toilet paper ever again, the Reel Premium Bamboo Toilet Paper ships right to your door and is made without trees.

Pros: Tree-free, zero plastic packaging (including tape), no inks or dyes, fragrance- and chlorine-free, BPA-free, biodegradable, good quality weight and thickness, impressive sheet count per roll

Cons: None

Sure, subscription services are typical for makeup, coffee, and even razors, but toilet paper? That’s a new one. The Reel Premium Bamboo Toilet Paper makes sustainably sourced, tree-free toilet paper that will be regularly shipped to you — so you never run out.

This three-ply toilet paper is sustainably sourced and made without chlorine, fragrance, inks, and dyes. Zero plastic goes into the manufacturing process and the 100% bamboo rolls are wrapped with recycled paper.

You can subscribe and have Reel delivered to you every month, every two months, or every three months, depending on how stocked you want your bathroom cabinet to be. If you want to reduce waste wherever you can, these rolls are a wonderful option.

The best three-ply toilet paper

best toilet paper quilted

is the ideal absorbent tissue if softness is your top concern.

Pros: Incredibly soft and absorbent, thick, Sustainable Forestry Initiative-certified, sewer- and septic-safe

Cons: Produces lint, not the best for weak plumbing

lives up to its name, as its three-layered paper makes it more absorbent and softer than one- and two-layered sheets.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative-certified toilet paper remains strong, though it doesn’t dissolve easily. But, despite the thick texture, it’s sewer- and septic-safe.

Quilted Northern guarantees that their rolls will fit your holder. If the rolls don’t fit, the company will send you a free extender.

Tips for buying toilet paper

How to compare toilet paper prices

There is no standardization of toilet paper square or roll sizes, so words like “mega roll” or “double roll” don’t mean much. Instead, if you want to compare prices, look at the cost per square foot and the number of “ply,” or layers of thickness. This scary-looking yet simple equation should do the trick:

(Price in dollars x 14400) ÷ (width of each sheet in inches x length of each sheet in inches x number of sheets on a roll x number of rolls) = cost in cents per square foot

And, when looking at costs, you should keep in mind that you will use fewer sheets of three-ply than one-ply because of the superior cleaning and absorbing abilities.

Less toilet paper is better

Although there are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives on the market, for the sake of forests and our environment, the less toilet paper you use, the better.

One way to use less toilet paper is to install a bidet. We have a helpful guide on the best bidets, but basically, you can get a decent bidet on Amazon for less than $100 and install it yourself in about half an hour. You’ll still need toilet paper to spot-check the bidet’s work and to dry off, but you’ll use much less.

A note about buying toilet paper online

As we were doing our research, we found that there were a lot of buyer complaints about the rolls they ordered not being the same size as what they were used to. For this reason, when buying online, pay special attention to the sizes of the sheets, how many sheets are on a roll, and how many rolls you are getting.

If you do find a toilet paper you like on Amazon, we recommend trying the “Subscribe & Save” service. This allows you to save up to 15% off the regular price. Plus, you don’t have to remember to reorder toilet paper. It automatically comes to your home at regular intervals, much like our Reel pick.

We examined hundreds of expert and buyer reviews and ratings of many toilet paper brands and styles. The ones we chose to include in our guide have the ability to clean you down there, are septic- and sewer system-safe, and have discernable softness.

Flamingo Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Though a popular business strategy for new startups today is to sell direct-to-consumer through their own websites, the practice often serves as a springboard for other retail opportunities, not an outright boycott. Direct-to-consumer selling hasn’t replaced brick-and-mortar stores; rather, it has helped redefine how to create brand experiences and nurture loyal customer followings.

In a similar fashion, many online startups eventually find their way into popular retail stores that you’ve been shopping at for years, whether for a limited run or a long-term residency. It’s just another way for these startups to get their products in front of more eyes, plus it’s undeniably convenient to shop all your favorites at one site and enjoy free shipping and return perks.

Target is one such home to many direct-to-consumer startups you might recognize across personal care, bedding, food, pets, and more. It’s the perfect place to discover new and innovative brands, so it’s no wonder the following 22 online companies have decided to sell through the company.
