How to use App Tracking Transparency to stop apps from collecting your data and location on Apple devices

With the release of iOS 14.5, you can turn off apps’ ability to track you on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

  • App Tracking Transparency (ATT) forces apps on Apple devices to ask your permission before tracking your activity across other apps and websites.
  • Many apps will track things like your current location or your buying habits without asking permission; opting in to ATT will reduce apps’ ability to do this.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Have you ever looked at a product on your computer and later have ads for it show up in a social media app on your phone? Do the ads appear targeted toward you and know where you are?

This is because you are being tracked by the various apps you use on your smartphone. This controversial practice often occurs without your permission. With iOS 14.5, Apple made good on a promise to allow its users to opt out of this practice with App Tracking Transparency.

App Tracking Transparency, explained

App Tracking Transparency (ATT) requires apps to ask permission to track your activity across other apps and websites. This is especially important since the combination of these apps and websites create a strikingly detailed profile of how you spend your time online, and how you use your smartphone.

Now that Apple has included ATT in iOS 14.5 and the corresponding generational updates for other Apple devices, you can keep track of which apps and companies are tracking you.

How to enable App Tracking Transparency

Once your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV has been updated to iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, or tvOS 14.5 or later, you should automatically have App Tracking Transparency turned on.

Once enabled, ATT has a pop-up appear when you first use an app. The pop-up will ask if you want the app to track your activity across other apps or websites.

If you get tired of the apps letting you know who’s tracking you or asking for permissions, you can turn off ATT.

1. Open the Settings app on your device.

2. Scroll down and select Privacy. On tvOS devices, select General before Privacy.

3. Tap on Tracking, toward the top.

Screenshot of Privacy page on iPhone Settings app
On the “Privacy” page, go to “Tracking.”

4. Tap the button switch next to Allow Apps to Request to Track to turn the feature on or off – when it’s on, the switch will be green.

Screenshot of Tracking page on iPhone Settings app
If you don’t want apps to ask to track you, you can turn off the feature.

5. The apps that have asked your permission to track you will also show up on this screen. You can turn on or off which apps track your activities by tapping the button next to each.

How to check what data your apps collect

You can find out what data your apps are collecting through an app’s page in the App Store. When you find the app you want to check out, click on it and scroll down. Toward the bottom you will find App Privacy, which shows what data that app collects. Some apps might surprise you with how much of your personal information they track.

Screenshot of App Privacy section of app's about screen on App Store
You can see what data certain apps collect from you in the Apple App Store.

Why turning off tracking for some apps might be disabled

Sometimes the App Tracking Transparency option may be grayed out, meaning you can’t turn it on. There are three situations in which this will be the case.

  • If you created your Apple ID in the last three days, the option to toggle ATT will be grayed out.
  • If a child with a child account or under the age of 18 is signed in on the device, the toggle will be grayed out.
  • If your Apple ID uses a profile that limits tracking or is managed by an educational institution, the toggle will be grayed out.

Renting a movie online is as simple as a few clicks – here’s a full breakdown of all the major rental services

If you buy through our links, we may earn money from affiliate partners. Learn more.

Movie rental services 4x3
You can rent new movies from services like Prime video, Vudu, Apple TV, Google TV, and FandangoNow.

  • There are a number of online services that let you rent movies to stream at home.
  • Popular video rental services include Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu, and FandangoNow.
  • Movie rentals typically last 48 hours after you start watching a film.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

Remember when renting a movie meant going to a store? Times have changed for the movie industry. With video rental chains a relic of the past, online streaming has become the new standard for renting movies to watch at home.

With multiple services to choose from – including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, Google Play, and FandangoNow – it’s never been easier to find a film worth renting on a smart TV, media player, or mobile device. These platforms all allow you to browse through a huge catalog of digital films, enabling you to pay for rentals individually rather than as part of a subscription.

To help make your next movie night at home more enjoyable, we’ve broken down some of the basics of renting streaming films from a variety of services. So, put a bag of popcorn in your microwave and pick up your controller or tablet – there are a lot of great movies out there waiting to be discovered.

What services can you rent streaming movies from?

Services like Vudu, Google Play Movies, Apple TV, and FandangoNow all offer a comprehensive assortment of movies that you can rent individually without a subscription. Amazon Prime Video, meanwhile, actually offers individual rentals in addition to its subscription service for Prime members.

Once you’ve created an account with any of the above services and added your payment details, renting a title is as simple as a few clicks. In most cases, you can simply browse through the platform’s website or download the service’s app. After finding the title you want, you simply click on the movie and complete the instructions to confirm your rental.

How much do streaming movies cost to rent?

Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV, FandangoNow, and Google Play all let you rent movies for as little as $3, though most newer releases top out at $8 depending on the quality you choose. Brand-new movies that are still playing in theaters can cost a bit more, however, with some in-theater titles going for as much as $20 to rent.

How long can you stream movies after you rent them?

You typically get 30 days to start watching a title once you rent it. After you press play, you usually have 48 hours before your rental expires.

Can you buy streaming movies to keep permanently?

In many cases you can choose to buy a digital movie instead of just renting it. This will allow you to stream it whenever you want for as long as you want. Digital movie purchases typically range in price from $5 to $30 depending on how new a film is. 4K Ultra HD versions of movies are sometimes more expensive than high definition (HD) or standard definition (SD) versions.

It should be noted, however, that digital purchases aren’t quite as permanent as buying a DVD or Blu-ray. When you make a digital movie purchase, you’re essentially buying the license to keep streaming that title from the service you’ve selected. But, if that service somehow goes out of business or loses the rights to the title you bought, it’s possible that you’ll lose access to your digital copy.

Can you rent brand-new movies still playing in theaters?

In response to theater closures during the pandemic, studios have allowed people to stream many brand-new movies that would otherwise be exclusive to theaters.

Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, FandangoNow, and Google Play all offer these “in-theater” titles. Disney Plus also releases select in-theater movies via “Premier Access,” which requires an extra fee in addition to your regular subscription. Depending on the studio, some titles might only be available to rent, while others are only available to buy.

Prices for in-theater rentals can be as high as $30 per title. This may seem expensive if you’re planning to watch “Spiral: From The Book of Saw” on your own, but if you’re a parent with kids who would have otherwise spent a small fortune to see “Raya and the Last Dragon” in a theater – this is a steal. Rental prices are also reduced over time – “Raya,” for instance, is now just $6 to rent through VOD, or free to stream with a Disney Plus subscription.

Some notable ‘in-theater movies’ currently available to rent or own include:

Since the movie selection is about the same no matter which rental service you choose, picking a platform to use really comes down to choosing the app that works best on the devices you own. Below, we’ve broken down some key details for all of the major digital movie retailers.

Vudu streaming app
The Vudu app interface is easy to navigate.

Vudu is available on many devices and even includes a selection of free movies with commercials.

Vudu maintains a massive inventory of titles to rent at various price points. The service used to charge more for 4K versions of its titles, but most movies are now priced the same regardless of their video quality.

The Vudu app is readily available on many platforms and recently expanded its support to Amazon Fire TV, which was one of the few devices it was missing from. We also like that its app tends to work well and support most features no matter what platform you use it on.

Vudu also has an edge over some competing services thanks to its “Free With Ads” selection. This collection of titles rotates practically every week, and though there are ads, breaks are rarely lengthy or too intrusive. So, if you’re trying to entertain on a budget and don’t feel like paying for a rental — this is one of the best options available.

Apple TV

apple tv plus
You can rent movies and sign up for Apple TV Plus in the same app.

Apple TV ties in seamlessly with the rest of Apple’s services.

Apple offers a large selection of movies to rent through its Apple TV app on a variety of connected devices. Though in-app transactions were originally limited to web browsers and mobile devices, you can now rent movies directly from the Apple TV app on most media players and smart TVs.

The Apple TV app is also a strong performer when it comes to general video and audio quality. The service offers one of the largest 4K rental selections, giving you the best overall AV experience for your dollar.

As a bonus, the Apple TV app is also home to the Apple TV Plus streaming service. You have to pay a subscription fee of $5 a month to unlock Apple TV Plus content, but it’s convenient to be able to access TV Plus shows and movies in the same app as your rentals.

On the downside, the Apple TV app is not available on Android mobile devices.

FandangoNow streaming app
FandangoNow lets you rent movies to watch on many devices.

FandangoNow is the only rental service with IMAX Enhanced movies for high-quality streaming on select Sony TVs.

Like all of the digital rental stores on our list, FandandgoNow offers a large selection of movies to choose from. The platform is also available on most connected devices, and was recently added to Apple TV products.

The service has been in the 4K streaming game a long time now and they do an impressive job bringing high quality picture and audio to homes. FandangoNow is also the only rental service currently offering support for the IMAX Enhanced format. This tech offers specially optimized HDR picture and DTS sound on supported Sony TVs.

If you have a Dolby Vision compatible TV or a Dolby Atmos audio setup, however, you’ll likely want to opt for Vudu or Apple TV since FandangoNow does not currently support those formats.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video
Prime Video has a big selection of rental options in addition to its subscription library.

Prime Video has a huge library of movies you can pay to rent, even if you’re not a Prime subscriber.

Amazon Prime Video does a lot of things right, and it provides an impressive list of digital rentals you can buy without a subscription. If you’re a Prime member you also gain the added benefit of a massive number of movies and shows as part of your subscription. On top of that — similar to Vudu — Amazon Prime offers a small selection of “Free With Ads” titles sponsored by IMDB.

Prime Video is one of the only digital retailers currently offering support for the HDR10+ format. With that said, the platform’s Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support is sorely lacking as there are very few titles that offer those features.

On that note, my main problem with Prime Video is its lack of clear format and quality labels. 4K HDR viewing options aren’t always available and it’s not even always clear whether a title is supposed to include those features or not.

Depending on the device you’re using, you often have to hunt specifically for the 4K UHD version of a movie or show to see if that option exists.

Google Play Movies/YouTube

Google Play Movies streaming app
Google Play Movies is available on Android devices, while YouTube offers the same selection on smart TVs.

Google Play Movies and YouTube are both convenient rental service for Android users.

When it comes to movie selection, Google is basically on par with the other services on our list. That said, Google appears to be in the process of phasing out the Google Play Movies app. As reported by Variety, the service is no longer available on Roku devices or smart TVs from Samsung, LG, and Vizio. Instead, you can rent movies directly through Google’s YouTube app on those devices.

YouTube doesn’t have the best interface for highlighting Google’s selection of movie rentals, but the rental process works about the same as any other service once you’ve found a movie you’d like to watch.

Google Play Movies is still available as an app on Android devices, however, and I prefer this mobile interface for renting movies. It easily allows me to find what titles I have in my digital library and what titles offer 4K, as well as navigate new rentals and purchase options, shop deals, and browse what new “in-theater” titles are available.

How to delete apps on any device to free up storage space and save battery life

How to delete apps: a full guide for every device
You can delete unneeded apps from any device in a few simple steps.

  • You can delete apps on any device to save storage space and battery life while decluttering your home screen.
  • To delete apps on iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple Watch, simply tap and hold the app icon.
  • To delete or uninstall apps on Mac or Windows 10 computers, you have to use Launchpad or Settings.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Deleting apps is a great way to clean up your digital space, though the methods for getting it done will depend on the device you’re using.

Here’s a quick guide to deleting apps, whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, iCloud, Mac, Windows, Android, Apple Watch, Chromebook, or Apple TV.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

How to delete apps on an iPhone or iPad

To delete apps on iPhone, simply go to your home screen, and tap and hold the desired app to access the option to “Remove App.” Then, select “Delete App.” That will also get rid of any data associated with that app.

Tap “Remove App” and then “Delete App” in the next pop-up.

On an iPhone with iOS 14 or later, you can also hide an app from your home screen by saving it to your App Library – after selecting “Remove App,” choose “Remove from Home Screen” instead of “Delete App.”

The process to delete apps on an iPad is the same. But instead of first selecting “Remove App,” you’ll simply select “Delete App.” Like on iPhone, deleting an app on an iPad will also delete the data associated with the app.

To free up space in your iCloud account, go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, then select your name, hit “iCloud,” and “Manage Storage.” From there, go into the “Backups” section and you’ll see your list of apps, which you can then delete.

How to delete apps on a Mac

You can’t delete some of the apps on your Mac, but for the ones you can, the Launchpad is the easiest route to getting it done.

Simply open it and then click and hold the app. An “x” should appear in the top-left corner of the app icon. Click the “x” to delete the app on your Mac.

A small “x” will appear at the top-left of any apps that can be deleted.

How to delete apps on Windows 10

Deleting programs on Windows 10 is a bit more complicated as simply deleting the program folder or file can cause problems.

Instead, it’s best to go through the “Apps and Features” page in the Settings app. Once there, simply select the app and click “Uninstall.”

You’ll have to “Uninstall” programs and apps on Windows 10.

Like Mac computers, however, some apps cannot be deleted.

How to delete apps on Android

To delete apps on Android, you can simply press and hold the app, then drag it to the “Uninstall” text at the top right of the screen (next to the trash icon) to delete it.

How to delete apps on an Apple Watch

There are two ways to delete apps from your Apple Watch: from the Watch app on your iPhone or from the apps screen on your Apple Watch.

On your Watch, you can tap and hold the app icon. An “x” will appear over the icon, which you can tap to remove the app from the device. If your apps are in a list view, you can swipe to the left on an app and tap the trash can icon to delete it.

Swipe left and tap the trash icon if your apps are in list view.

On your iPhone, open the Watch app and, on the “Watch” tab, select the app and then toggle off the option to “Show app on Apple Watch.” You can also turn off automatic app installation from there.

How to delete apps on a Chromebook

Deleting apps on a Chromebook is simple: Select and open the launcher, then right-click the desired app, and select “Uninstall” or “Remove from Chrome.”

On the other hand, if you want to delete apps from Google Chrome, go to “chrome://apps” in the browser and, like with Chromebook, right-click the desired app icon and then select “Remove from Chrome.”

After right-clicking an app, select “Remove from Chrome…” in the pop-up.

How to delete apps on an Apple TV

You can only delete apps on newer Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models – otherwise, you’ll only have the option to hide them from the home screen.

But for those who can, the process is simple: Scroll to the app on your home screen, then if you have a remote with a touchpad, press down in the center of it until the apps begin to wiggle. If you don’t have the touchpad, press and hold the select button. Then hit the play/pause button to open the menu to delete the app.

What is AirPlay? How to use Apple’s media-sharing feature

Samsung TV (airplay)
You can AirPlay content from an iPhone to a smart TV directly within a media player app.

  • Apple’s AirPlay feature allows users to stream videos, images, music, and other forms of media from an Apple device to another compatible device.
  • You can AirPlay content from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TVs and speakers.
  • For AirPlay to work, both devices have to be on the same Wi-Fi network, ethernet cable, or within Bluetooth range.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

Apple introduced AirPlay as a feature over a decade ago, but it still remains one of the most convenient ways to share media across Apple devices and other compatible systems.

What is AirPlay?

AirPlay is a feature that allows Apple devices (commonly iPhones) to share media – like videos, images, and music – to other devices like TVs and monitors for dual screen mode, as long as they’re all within the same network. This means AirPlay can only work if both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, within Bluetooth range, or connected to the same router using an ethernet cable.

This is what the AirPlay icon looks like.

For example, if you want to stream music to a Bluetooth speaker from your iPhone, AirPlay is a convenient way to do it. The same goes for videos: If you’re watching a YouTube video on your iPad but want to watch it on a bigger screen, AirPlay is the quickest way to maintain seamless viewing.

AirPlay is similar to Apple’s Airplay mirroring, but screen mirroring is typically used to copy an entire display to another device, like a projector or TV.

How to use AirPlay

  • From an iPhone to a TV: With the selected media open, find the AirPlay icon and select it. Under “Speakers & TVs” select the device you want to AirPlay the media to.
Select the device under “Speakers & TVs.”

  • From an iPhone to a Mac computer: There is no direct way to AirPlay from an iPhone to a Mac, but you can download a third-party app or use Apple screen mirroring.
  • From a Mac computer to a TV: To AirPlay from a Mac to a TV, first make sure your Mac has AirPlay enabled using System Preferences.
Make sure your AirPlay Display is enabled by selecting the name of the device.

  • From any Apple device to an Apple TV: Make sure the devices are all on the same Wi-Fi network. You’ll know if AirPlay is supported if you see the AirPlay icon.
  • From an Apple device to Roku: Before attempting to AirPlay, check to make sure your AirPlay-compatible Roku has AirPlay enabled and is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Advantages of AirPlay

  • AirPlay is one of the easiest ways to share and stream media from one device to a speaker, television, or projector.
  • If the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or ethernet connection remains strong, content can be streamed rather seamlessly and without lag.
  • All new iOS devices support AirPlay, and the feature doesn’t require any setup or configuration like some other streaming outputs.

Disadvantages of AirPlay

  • AirPlay can only be used from one app at a time – this means you can’t stream a YouTube video to your Apple TV while also simultaneously streaming Spotify to a Bluetooth speaker.
  • Depending on your Wi-Fi connection, AirPlay can struggle and occasionally drop off or freeze entirely, which may require troubleshooting.
  • Perhaps the biggest con is that AirPlay is almost entirely exclusive to Apple; non-Apple devices may have to download additional software to use AirPlay.

How to troubleshoot when AirPlay isn’t working

If AirPlay isn’t working, you may need to troubleshoot the involved Apple or AirPlay-compatible devices, or even reset your Wi-Fi router. See our AirPlay troubleshooting guide for directions and further information.

The film is now available to stream through video on demand (VOD) retailers like Prime Video and Vudu. The movie left HBO Max on May 1, and it’s not clear when it will return.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” showcases the two monsters in battle with action-packed visuals far beyond those found in their first big-screen matchup in 1963. The film, according to HBO Max, depicts the giant ape looking to “find his true home.” Meanwhile, Godzilla is on a rampage and his anger leads to a battle between the two legendary titans. “Godzilla vs. Kong” stars Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Kaylee Hottle.

How to watch ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’

“Wonder Woman 1984” is back on HBO Max, the same streaming service it premiered on in December 2020. The movie was the first in a series of Warner Bros. films made available for streaming the same day they hit the big screen.

Director Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine return for “Wonder Woman 1984.” The action picks up 40 years after the conclusion of 2017’s “Wonder Woman.” Kristen Wiig plays Cheetah, a villain who can match Wonder Woman’s superhuman abilities, and “The Mandalorian” star Pedro Pascal plays nefarious businessman Maxwell Lord.

HBO Max subscribers were given one month of exclusive access before “Wonder Woman 1984” was removed from the service and made available to buy from other providers, like Amazon, Vudu, and Google Play. “Wonder Woman 1984” was added back to the HBO Max library in May 2021 alongside other DC films like “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and “Batman v Superman.”

Warner’s decision to debut its theatrical releases on HBO Max has already helped bring millions of new subscribers to the streaming service, and could influence other studios to pursue a similar course. Data from research startup Antenna showed that HBO Max signups increased 4.3 times during the weekend “Wonder Woman 1984” premiered.

The VOD version also offers Dolby Vision, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos playback though streaming services that support those features, including Vudu and Apple TV.

What other Warner Bros. movies are coming to HBO Max?

How to turn on and use AirPlay on a Mac, for screen mirroring on larger displays like a smart TV

It’s easy to AirPlay from your Mac computer to devices within range.

  • You can turn on AirPlay on a Mac through the System Preferences app’s “Displays” menu.
  • AirPlay on a Mac is handy when giving presentations, or just sharing content on a larger display.
  • You can AirPlay from your Mac to any AirPlay-compatible device, like an iPad and most smart TVs.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

AirPlay is a great way to share content between Apple devices, and even to non-Apple devices that are AirPlay-compatible like many smart TVs.

With AirPlay on Mac, you can share music, photos, videos, or just mirror your entire computer screen on a larger display – here’s how.

How to enable AirPlay on a Mac

1. Open System Preferences, which you can do by clicking the Apple symbol in the menu bar at the top of your screen and selecting “System Preferences” in the drop-down.

2. In System Preferences, find and select the icon for “Displays,” which looks like a computer monitor.

Go to “Displays” in System Preferences.

3. Check the box next to “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available.”

Make sure the box at the bottom of the Displays page is checked.

How to AirPlay your Mac to another device

You can mirror the display of your entire Mac screen onto an Apple TV or another AirPlay-compatible device, like an iPad or some smart TVs.

There are two ways to do this.

From the menu bar:

First, make sure your Mac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as whatever device you’d like to AirPlay to. If you’re AirPlaying to an iPad, make sure they’re both logged into the same Apple ID account as well.

1. In the menu bar at the top of your Mac’s screen, click the AirPlay icon, which looks like a rectangle with an arrow at the bottom.

2. In the drop-down, choose the device you want to AirPlay to.

In the AirPlay drop-down, select a device under “AirPlay To.”

3. A passcode might appear on your device’s screen. Enter it in the pop-up on your Mac.

4. Your Mac should then begin mirroring its screen to the device you selected.

5. To stop AirPlaying, click the AirPlay icon in the menu bar again and choose “Turn AirPlay off” in the drop-down.

How to troubleshoot when AirPlay is not working between your devices and fails to cast content

woman watching tv looking through content on phone
If AirPlay is not working for you, there are a few ways to troubleshoot the problem using the devices involved.

  • If your AirPlay is not working, you may need to troubleshoot the involved Apple or AirPlay-compatible devices or your Wi-Fi router.
  • When everything is working properly, you can use AirPlay to send video from your Mac, iPhone, or iPad to an Apple TV or another AirPlay-supported device.
  • Here is a list of things to check on each device when AirPlay is not working.
  • Visit Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

AirPlay is one of the features that makes the Apple ecosystem feel interconnected; with just a tap or two, you can stream audio or video from your Mac, iPhone, or iPad to another compatible device, like a television, Apple TV, or smart speaker.

Most of the time, AirPlay appears effortlessly in the Share menu of your media app, and you don’t need to think much about it. Occasionally, though, it doesn’t work, and it’s not clear why. Here’s what to do if AirPlay is not working.

What to do when AirPlay is not working

Most of the time, if AirPlay isn’t working, it simply fails to work at all – your device, like an Apple TV or your television doesn’t appear in the AirPlay device list. But AirPlay can also suffer from other glitches, like if the audio or video stutters or is otherwise low quality.

Here’s a short checklist of things to investigate, organized by the various parts of the AirPlay equation: your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, the screen or speaker you want to AirPlay to, and your Wi-Fi router. As always when running down a troubleshooting list, try AirPlay after each step to see if that fixed the problem; if it didn’t, keep going until you solve the issue.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting

  • Toggle your Wi-Fi. The easiest way to do this is to put your iPhone or iPad in airplane mode for a few seconds, then turn off airplane mode (see our guide to airplane mode for details). This forces the device to reconnect to Wi-Fi, which solves all sorts of connectivity issues.
What to do if Airplay is not working 1
Turning airplane mode on and off again resets the Wi-Fi and can often instantly fix AirPlay glitches.

  • Make sure your device is up to date. Is your device running the latest version of iOS or iPadOS? Update it if necessary by following the steps in our guides to updating your iPhone or iPad.
  • Restart your iPhone or iPad. A software glitch might be preventing AirPlay from working properly, so restarting the device can wipe the slate clean and let it work normally again. See our guides to restarting your iPhone or iPad.

Mac troubleshooting

  • Check for AirPlay compatibility. If you’ve never used AirPlay on your Mac before, make sure it supports AirPlay. To check, click the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences,” then “Displays.” If your Mac works with AirPlay, you should see an AirPlay Display menu and an option to “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available.”
What to do if Airplay is not working 2
To be sure your Mac is AirPlay-compatible, check the Display tab in System Preferences.

  • Toggle your Wi-Fi. Restart your Wi-Fi connection and make sure that it’s working properly. Test your Wi-Fi by opening a webpage in a browser.
  • Restart your Mac. A restart can clear out any potential temporary glitches from memory.
  • Check for a MacOS update. Make sure you’re running the latest MacOS version.

Apple TV, smart TV, or speaker troubleshooting

  • Power on your device. Make sure the device you want to play to is powered on and awake.
  • Connect to the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure the second device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If not, switch networks to sync your devices.
  • Make sure the device is successfully using Wi-Fi. Try to use the device to stream content from the internet. If that’s not working, AirPlay won’t work either, and you might have a more serious issue with your device, or the router might need to be restarted.
  • Update your Apple TV. If you’re using an Apple TV, make sure the device is up to date. Check for software updates and install it if available.
  • Restart the device. A restart can clear its memory and star the connection fresh.
  • Check the device’s audio. If AirPlay is only partially working – you see video but don’t hear audio, for instance – make sure the device’s audio isn’t muted. Also, make sure your iPhone or iPad isn’t set to mute.

Wi-Fi router troubleshooting

  • Restart your router. If the source of your trouble appears to be your Wi-Fi or internet connection, restart the router. Unplug it, wait two minutes, and then plug it back in.
  • You may need to update your router. Check your router to see if it needs a firmware update. Many modern routers are easy to update via a mobile app; if your router is older, you might need to log into its web console (see the router’s user guide for details).

Apple has revealed an updated Apple TV 4K streaming device and new Siri voice remote. The upgraded device will replace the current Apple TV 4K model in late May.

The updated Apple TV 4K features an upgraded A12 processor while the new Siri remote offers more precise controls than its predecessor. Preorders of the new Apple TV 4K will be available on April 30; the 32GB model starts at $179 while the 64GB model is $200.

The new Siri remote will be sold separately for $59, and will be compatible with older Apple TV devices following a software update in late April.

Apple last updated the Apple TV lineup in 2017, when it added support for 4K playback and HDR color formats. In terms of size, the new Apple TV 4K and the 2017 models are the exact same dimensions and weight. The new Siri remote is about half an inch longer, slightly thinner, and 0.6 lbs heavier than the original remote.

The new Siri remote has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.0 and will also be able to control other devices like smart TVs and receivers via CEC. The original Siri remote had an accelerometer and gyroscope for use while gaming, but all versions of the Apple TV now support Bluetooth gamepads like the Xbox and PlayStation controllers.

Apple TV 4K’s processor has been improved from an A10X Fusion chip to a new A12 Bionic chip, allowing for higher frame rates when watching video or playing games via Apple Arcade. Other Apple TV 4K improvements include a new HDMI 2.1 port and support for Wi-Fi 6.

These improvements make the new Apple TV 4K model an enticing option for anyone who’s shopping for a high-end streaming device. Based on the specs, however, the improvements likely won’t be enough to justify an upgrade for most people who already own the 2017 model.
