Apple TV 4K 2021
The 2021 Apple TV 4K is the same size as the old version, but the new Siri Remote is longer and slimmer with more precise controls.

  • A new Apple TV 4K is coming in May, replacing the 2017 model for the same $179 price.
  • The 2021 Apple TV 4K boasts an improved processor, updated Siri remote, and high frame rate support.
  • That said, most people who already own the 2017 model will find little need to upgrade.

Apple has revealed an updated Apple TV 4K streaming device and new Siri voice remote. The upgraded device will replace the current Apple TV 4K model in late May.

The updated Apple TV 4K features an upgraded A12 processor while the new Siri remote offers more precise controls than its predecessor. Preorders of the new Apple TV 4K will be available on April 30; the 32GB model starts at $179 while the 64GB model is $200.

The new Siri remote will be sold separately for $59, and will be compatible with older Apple TV devices following a software update in late April.

Apple last updated the Apple TV lineup in 2017, when it added support for 4K playback and HDR color formats. In terms of size, the new Apple TV 4K and the 2017 models are the exact same dimensions and weight. The new Siri remote is about half an inch longer, slightly thinner, and 0.6 lbs heavier than the original remote.

The new Siri remote has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.0 and will also be able to control other devices like smart TVs and receivers via CEC. The original Siri remote had an accelerometer and gyroscope for use while gaming, but all versions of the Apple TV now support Bluetooth gamepads like the Xbox and PlayStation controllers.

Apple TV 4K’s processor has been improved from an A10X Fusion chip to a new A12 Bionic chip, allowing for higher frame rates when watching video or playing games via Apple Arcade. Other Apple TV 4K improvements include a new HDMI 2.1 port and support for Wi-Fi 6.

These improvements make the new Apple TV 4K model an enticing option for anyone who’s shopping for a high-end streaming device. Based on the specs, however, the improvements likely won’t be enough to justify an upgrade for most people who already own the 2017 model.

The next generation iMac comes in six bright colors

Apple Event April 2021
iMac

Like so many things these days, Apple’s new iMac comes tinged with late ’90s nostalgia: It’ll be the first Apple desktop in years to come in a rainbow of colors options.

The color options are a direct nod to the iMac G3 — the curvy computer from the late ’90s that helped distinguish Apple computers from its competition.

Beyond coming in a variety of colors, the new iMac is stunningly thin and looks almost like a large iPad mounted to a display arm. It has a 24-inch screen with a 4.5K resolution, powered by far beefier internals.

The latest iMac starts at $1,299 and can be preordered starting on April 30, with shipments set to begin in the second half of May.

The new iPad Pro has a more advanced chip, 5G connectivity, and a better display than ever

Apple event april iPad pro

In terms of form and features, the new iPad Pro isn’t a huge upgrade from the previous model — more of a mid-cycle upgrade that brings it in line with other main Apple products, from the iPhone to the MacBook.

There are two key updates to 2021’s iPad Pro: Its processor is getting upgraded to Apple’s in-house M1 chips, and its wireless connectivity is getting upgraded with 5G functionality.

The new iPad Pro also comes with up to 2 TB of storage, and there’s a new white color option.

Like the previous version, it comes in two form factors: 11 and 12.9 inches, which start at $799 and $1099. The larger, more expensive model gets another upgrade with a “Liquid Retina XDR display,” which Apple says is its best iPad display yet.

The new AirTag can attach to items like keys or luggage so you can easily find them

Apple Event April 2021
Apple AirTags

After years of rumors, Apple’s AirTags were officially announced on Tuesday. They will be available to preorder this Friday, April 23, for $29, and are expected to start shipping on April 30.

The tracking accessory helps users find whatever the AirTag is attached to, similar to how Tile works.

The small device is designed to be attached to everyday items, like keys, purses, and wallets. Once attached, you can use your iPhone to find your item by seeking out its corresponding AirTag

The tiny accessory takes the form of a circular tag with the signature Apple logo, though Apple says it will engrave custom designs into them at no cost. The AirTags integrate with Apple’s “Find My” app, and the app uses augmented reality to show visual markers leading you toward your lost item.

The new set-top streaming box starts at $179 — which is the same price as the current version — and will be available for preorder beginning on April 30. The remote, which is compatible with some previous Apple TVs, costs $59.

Apple TV 4K 2021
  • Apple announced a new Apple TV 4K during its Spring Loaded event
  • The fifth-generation Apple TV starts at $179 and will be available for preorder on April 30.
  • Apple also announced a new iMac and a new accessory called AirTags.

Apple just announced a new version of Apple TV 4K, the company’s signature set-top streaming box. The new Apple TV will start $179, the same price as the current model, and will be available for preorder on April 30.

Apple TV 4K will begin replacing the current model in stores in the second half of May. Apple introduced the new product during its Spring Loaded event on April 20, alongside a new iMac and new accessory called AirTag.

Apple last updated the Apple TV in 2017, and the new model will still be capable of 4K playback in Dolby Vision and HDR10 for enhanced colors and contrast. Apple TV’s new A12 bionic processor will support high frame rate content and improve overall performance for the same price as the 2017 Apple TV 4K.

The new Siri remote for Apple TV is cased with 100% recycled aluminum and features a touch-enabled directional pad and jog wheel for easy control. The Siri voice control button is now on the right side, in a similar position to the iPhone. A new color balance feature will let you use your iPhone’s sensors to calibrate Apple TV’s display settings to best match your TV and room lighting.

In addition to the new 4K model, the Apple TV HD will also be available with the new Siri remote. The Apple TV HD costs $149, the same price as the current model. The new Siri remote will be sold separately for $59 and works with older versions of Apple TV too.
