Amazon will start charging a $10 fee for Whole Foods deliveries across the US after years of offering the service for free

  • Amazon will add a $9.95 fee to Whole Foods grocery deliveries through Prime across the US.
  • The company initially piloted the program in August across six cities.
  • The company said the service charge will be implemented October 25 and help offset operating costs.

Amazon is tacking on a $9.95 delivery fee to Prime orders of Whole Foods’ items across the US.

A Whole Foods spokesperson told Insider customers have already been notified of the fee via email. The additional charge will go into effect across the country on October 25.

The spokesperson said the add-on expense will help the chain avoid raising prices on its products and offset rising operating costs for delivery orders, including equipment and technology. The fee will not impact grocery pickup orders or Amazon’s grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh, which is available in select markets.

“Our prices are consistent between the store and online options, which is something you don’t see with a lot of our competitors,” the spokesperson said. “We are starting to see more customers come back to shop in stores, which is something we encourage with our contactless payment options.”

The company initially piloted the fee in late August across six markets, including Detroit, Boston, and Chicago areas, Bloomberg first reported.

Whole Foods launched its grocery delivery service in 2018, shortly after e-commerce giant Amazon bought the chain for $13.7 billion in 2017. The grocer offered free deliveries for Prime members who had bought over $35 in groceries.

The Whole Foods service quickly went head-to-head with other top Amazon delivery options, including Prime Pantry and Amazon Fresh. In January, Amazon shut down its Prime Pantry service in order to streamline its grocery offerings.

During the onset of the pandemic, grocery services like Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery became increasingly popular as more customers looked to social distance. But, as the cost of goods continues to rise with increased shipping costs, as well as product and labor shortages, the new fee indicates Amazon may not be immune to inflation.

Viral TikToks highlight the lengths some Amazon drivers go to deliver packages, from plowing through flooded roads to driving over a highway median

Amazon prime driver
  • Popular TikToks show Amazon drivers plowing through flooded streets and across a highway median.
  • The videos are set to comedian Bo Burnham’s popular song, “Jeff Bezos.”
  • Amazon drivers are often pushed to meet intense deadlines, which can come at the expense of safety.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

From driving through flooded streets to making deliveries in a neighborhood hit by a tornado, a series of viral TikTok videos show the lengths that Amazon drivers can go to in order to fulfill the delivery quotas that the company expects them to meet.

Although the National Weather Service urges people not to drive in flooded areas since even a relatively small amount of water can cause a car to lose control or be swept away, two TikTok videos show drivers splashing through flooded areas that look more like rivers than streets. Amazon didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

The TikToks are set to Bo Burnham’s song “Jeff Bezos,” which has explicit lyrics. This video, which garnered almost a million likes, shows a delivery truck barreling through a flooded street.

Managers at delivery companies contracted by Amazon have reportedly told drivers to ignore safety issues, like broken mirrors and damaged seatbelts, and have instructed workers to ignore the mandatory vehicle checklist that employees have to go through to make sure the automobile is working well.

This video, which has 100,000 views, shows an Amazon van rushing over a speed bump at a high speed, which caused the back of the van to shake.

Other common complaints about working conditions as an Amazon driver have been well documented.

In the face of high delivery quotas and little time to take breaks, Amazon drivers often pee in bottles, with one female employee noting that she’d change her pad in the back of the delivery van, Insider’s Kate Taylor and Avery Hartmans previously reported. Amazon has stated that drivers are allowed to take breaks when needed, and has said the lack of available bathrooms while on the road is an industry-wide issue.

This video, which has 3 million likes, shows an Amazon truck driving over a highway median while traffic is backed up.

Some Amazon drivers told Insider’s Aleeya Mayo that the huge amounts of packages they have to deliver leads them to drive with one hand and eat or drink with the other, which isn’t safe. Workers also said they felt compelled to blow past stop signs and drive at dangerous speeds through residential areas in order to complete their delivery routes on time.

This video, which has 2 million likes on TikTok, shows an Amazon delivery van driving down a wet street where other cars have pulled to the side.

Another video, which has a million likes, shows an Amazon driver walking through an area that had recently been hit by a tornado to deliver packages, according to the user who posted it.

The videos are often posted to TikTok with the hashtag #JeffBezos, which has 1.2 billion total views.

College students can save big on streaming services – check out deals from Amazon Prime, Hulu, Paramount Plus, and more

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

woman watching movie on laptop headphones
Many streaming services offer discounts for college students.

Table of Contents: Masthead Sticky

While living in a shared dorm room my freshman year of college, I started regularly watching late-night movies on my laptop with a good pair of headphones. Living on a tight budget, I could only afford to choose one streaming service and would sometimes switch between different options month to month.

Student discounts weren’t as common then, but times have changed over the last few years, and students on a budget now have the option to take advantage of many deals to help ease the burden of paying for multiple subscriptions. If you plan out your spending and snag the right discounts, you can now enjoy several streaming services without breaking the bank.

To help you decide what to sign up for, we rounded up the best streaming service deals that are currently available for college students in the US. To redeem most of these discounts you’ll need to verify your student enrollment by using the .edu email address assigned by your university. Other requirements vary by service, so be sure to check each platform’s website for full details.

The best discounts on streaming services for college students in 2021:

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon offers a discounted plan for college students called Amazon Prime Student. The program includes a six-month free trial for new members and each month after the trial costs $6.49. An individual membership to Amazon Prime costs $13 a month, so by claiming the student membership, you get 50% off the standard price.

The student plan includes access to Prime Video where you can watch exclusive movies like “The Tomorrow War” and critically acclaimed series like “Fleabag.”

In addition to Prime Video, student members receive fast and free shipping on millions of eligible items, deep discounts on services like Amazon Music Unlimited ($1/month instead of $8/month), and more exclusive deals that are further explained in our breakdown of Amazon Prime Student.

Prime Student members can also pay a discounted $1/month rate (for up to 12 months) to add select Prime Video channels, like Showtime, Epix, and Shudder.

The discounted Amazon Prime rate for students is valid until graduation, for a maximum length of four years.

Hulu

Hulu

Hulu offers their basic ad-supported plan to college students for $2/month until they graduate. The Hulu Basic Plan normally costs $6 a month, so the student discount saves you about 65%.

Hulu Basic offers access to Hulu’s full catalog of movies and original series. Hulu also features a big selection of network shows, including popular series like “Atlanta,” “The Bachelor,” and “Bob’s Burgers.”

You can find more information about pricing for all of Hulu’s regular plans here.

Student Plan Monthly Subscription (small)
Paramount Plus

Paramount Plus

Similar to Hulu, Paramount Plus offers their ad-supported plan to college students at a discounted rate. You can claim a 25% discount on the Essential Plan, which brings the price down to around $3.74 a month. Unlike most streaming service deals, current college students can lock in this discount for four years, even if they graduate.

With Paramount Plus, you can watch shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and “Love Island,” along with movies like “The Ring,” “Minority Report,” and the “Indiana Jones” series. The service features content from Paramount, CBS, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, and The Smithsonian Channel.

The platform also includes original series like “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years” and the reboot of “iCarly,” as well as blockbuster new releases like “A Quiet Place: Part II.” Take a look at our full guide to original shows and movies on Paramount Plus for more information about current and upcoming titles.

Discovery Plus

Discovery Plus

For students enrolled in college, Discovery Plus offers $2 off their ad-supported plan, bringing the price down to just $3 a month

While the service doesn’t have many scripted offerings, viewers who enjoy cooking shows and reality TV will find numerous options, including “Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations,” “Man v. Food,” “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” “Sister Wives,” and “90 Day Fiancé.”

Discovery Plus also includes many original programs developed exclusively for subscribers. Check out our full guide to streaming Discovery Plus here.

Apple TV Plus and Apple Music

It’s possible to cancel your Apple TV Plus subscription using different Apple devices.

Though Apple TV Plus doesn’t offer a specific student plan, Apple Music does and, for a limited time, this discounted plan includes Apple TV Plus for free.

The Apple Music Student Plan costs $5 a month. That’s $5 off the regular Apple Music price and the same cost of Apple TV Plus on its own. College students are eligible for this discount for up to four years as long as they remain enrolled in school.

With Apple TV Plus you can stream original series like “Ted Lasso,” “Dickinson,” and “The Morning Show.” Apple Music allows you to stream over 75 million songs from your favorite artists without any interruptions from ads. You can also download music to supported devices for offline listening.

Spotify Premium with Hulu and Showtime

Spotify Logo

Spotify is another company offering an exclusive deal for college students that combines music with streaming services. You can get Spotify Premium Student for $5 a month after a one-month free trial and, in addition to music, subscribers receive Showtime and ad-supported Hulu for free.

The student plan is $5 cheaper than the individual Spotify Premium plan which costs $10 a month. To retain access to Spotify Premium, ad-supported Hulu, and Showtime at this discounted rate, students must verify they are still enrolled in college every 12 months. The Spotify Premium Student bundle is valid for a maximum of four years.

Premium Student Monthly Subscription (small)
YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium offers $5 off their individual plan to students, along with a one-month free trial for new customers.

This streaming service doesn’t offer many original movies or shows, but for a discounted rate of $7 a month you can watch YouTube without ads, keep videos running in the background, and use the YouTube Music Premium app.

Annual verifications are required to keep the student discount.

12 reasons why an Amazon Prime membership is worth the $119 annual fee

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more.

is amazon prime worth it for $119
We think Amazon Prime is worth the money. Keep reading to find out why.

Table of Contents: Masthead StickyPrime 30-Day Free Trial (medium)

Asking the question “How much would you pay for Amazon Prime?” is kind of like asking how much would you pay to keep using Google. It’s so fundamentally entrenched in our daily lives that it has reached a near-ubiquitous status. We are used to near-instant gratification, and, for many of us, it’s hard to put a price on that convenience.

If you pay month to month, an Amazon Prime membership is $12.99 per month, and a Prime Student membership is $6.49 per month. For EBT and Medicaid holders, additional discounts bring the cost down to $5.99 per month. Overall, paying month to month for the average user will cost you about $37 more than the annual option over a year.

Is Amazon Prime worth it at $119?

In short, yes. JPMorgan has estimated that your Amazon Prime membership is actually worth $785 annually.

For the $119 annual fee or $13 monthly fee, Prime members get a ton of benefits (which definitely range in usefulness). Among them are free one-day delivery, free same-day shipping, and free two-hour delivery on eligible items (of which there are many), exclusive rewards and discounts, access to Prime Video, Prime Music, online photo storage, music and books, and over 20 other perks.

As a Prime member, you also get access to Prime Day discounts on everything from new TVs to Instant Pots to Amazon Echo devices. For those not familiar, Amazon Prime Day is the retail giant’s annual sitewide savings event exclusively for Prime members. It took place on June 21 to 22 this year.

Granted, you may not use every feature included in your membership, but the convenience alone is worth the cost.

If you’re a student and/or have access to a university email, you can save 50% on the yearly or monthly fee with Amazon Prime Student. You can also share your Amazon Prime and most benefits with family members via Amazon Household, making your dollar stretch even further. Even if none of that applies to you, it’s still generally a great investment.

Prime Monthly Subscription (medium)

Ultimately, most of us will pay a bit more for the perks we’ve come to rely upon without much grumbling. But, if you want a breakdown of the ways you’re saving and potentially reassess the cost, check out our breakdown below. If you’re unsure and haven’t made the leap yet, check out a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime before deciding it’s worth committing to.

Here’s a breakdown of why Amazon Prime is still a great value, even at $119 per year:

Shipping costs

free shipping

The annual or monthly price includes free one-day delivery on over 10 million items with no minimum purchase. Without Prime, you’ll get free regular shipping if your order is over $25, but no one-day perk.

One-day shipping (give or take a couple of bucks) typically costs about $10. If, as a Prime member, you place 11 orders of under $25 over the course of a year on Amazon (say, you need paper towels but not much else), the membership pays for itself.

And while expedited shipping is an abnormal cost for most of us, it’s a pricey one. Prime’s Same-Day speeds offer delivery on millions of items in 47 major metropolitan areas for orders over $35.

On average, Amazon Prime members spend $1,400 US dollars on the platform every year. Non-Prime users spend a little less than half that ($600), but they may be picking up the tab elsewhere, like in the cost of gas to shop in-store, the higher price of items from big-box retailers, and shipping from other stores.

Video streaming services

Screen Shot 2018 05 02 at 10.30.27 AM

One of the suspected reasons for the increase in annual fees in 2018 was due to the amount of money Amazon planned to pour into its digital content, which is one of the best perks of the Prime membership.

Prime Video lets you stream from a large library of movies and TV shows for free, including Amazon Originals content, and rent the latest releases for low prices. Prime members can also subscribe to over 100 channels (and only pay for the channels they want, which is great for saving money without losing convenience), including HBO, Showtime, and CBS All Access

Plus, it’s probably only going to get better as streaming competition intensifies.

Prime Video Monthly Subscription (medium)
Unlimited photo storage and sharing, as well as 5 GB for videos and files

36467_desktop_hero_en US_1500x375

Amazon Photos lets you save and share unlimited full-resolution photos across desktop, mobile, and tablet, as well as share unlimited photo storage with up to five people. If you’re paying a few bucks every month to increase your iCloud storage just to make room for the photos on your phone, you can cut out that cost and use your membership to a fuller extent.

You’ll also get five GB for videos and files. And Amazon Photos comes pre-installed on Amazon devices, so you can also view your photos from your Fire TV and Echo Show.

Sharing Prime benefits across an entire household at no additional cost

amazon household

If you’re using it as a family, Amazon Household is one of the easiest ways to see the return on your Prime membership investment. Two adults and up to four teens and four child profiles may link in a ‘Household,’ allowing everyone in the family to enjoy Prime benefits (free shipping, Prime Video, Amazon Photos and share content like ebooks, audiobooks, games, and apps) without paying extra. This alone makes Prime a good deal if you or your family members use any of the features even sparingly.

Another benefit of linking accounts is that adults can approve orders before they’re placed (for teens) and set parental controls on digital content (for kids).

Prime exclusive rewards and discounts, like Prime Day deals, Lightning Deals, and a rewards credit card that gives you 5% cash back

amazon prime day

Your Prime membership also makes you eligible for lots of exclusive deals, which are the metaphorical cherry on top of the rest mentioned.

The most impactful is access to Prime Day deals, Amazon’s annual holiday that took place earlier this year. If you missed it, don’t fret, you also get exclusive access to the following:

Early access to Lightning DealsPrime members get an extra 30 minutes to shop lightning deals (which typically last only for a few hours) before they’re officially open. Just look for the “Prime Early Access” label as you shop the page.

Discounts or rewards for choosing no-rush shipping at checkout: If you can wait a few extra days for your order to arrive, you can either earn rewards on future purchases or receive discounts immediately. Rewards are automatically added to your account once your free No-Rush order ships and they are automatically applied to qualifying orders as well.

A rewards credit card with no annual fee or foreign transaction fees: Get 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% back on all other purchases. You can redeem your points on Amazon as well as for cash back, gift cards, and travel.

The option to try clothes on at home before actually buying them

PW_HERO._CB499956346_

Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and purchase new styles at home. Choose three or more items across their many lines and try them on at home before deciding what to keep and pay for. You have seven days to choose, and you can just check out online once you’ve decided. From there, return your unwanted items for free using the resealable box and prepaid shipping label.

If you don’t frequently shop online this might not save you much money through your membership. But if you’ve ever gotten burned by a short return window and a busy schedule, the try-before-you-buy is a great feature to save money in the long term.

Access to books, magazines, and comics

prime reading

Prime members get access to Prime Reading which means they can choose up to 10 titles at a time from more than 3,000 options as a perk of membership, and Amazon First Reads gives you access to one free Kindle book every month chosen by Amazon book editors.

And if you have kids and find yourself spending a lot on kids’ books, movies, TV shows, or educational apps and games put together, Prime members can pay $2.99 per month for a single child or $6.99 for a family of four kids for Amazon Kids+, which gives members unlimited access to thousands of options. Start a trial here before committing

Parents can set controls like time limits and content filters, and personalize the experiences of each child profile. It’s available on Fire Tablets (books, videos, apps), Echo (audio), Kindle eReaders (books), and Android phones and tablets (books, videos).

Free Amazon Music streaming and discounted Amazon Music Unlimited

prime music

Amazon Music is a benefit of your Prime Membership that features a growing selection of 2 million songs, playlists, and stations that you can listen to ad-free and on-demand. If you want to expand your options, Amazon Music Unlimited ($7.99 per month) has a larger library of tens of millions of songs and podcasts you can download for offline listening on any device. Depending on your own preference, Amazon Music Unlimited might be a better deal than popular choices like Spotify Premium ($9.99 per month). You can find a trial here to determine which one is better ultimately for you.

Save 50% on Prime with access to a university.edu email or as a qualifying customer with an EBT or Medicaid card

''po'p[

If you have access to a .edu email and haven’t yet become a member with it, you can get a six-month trial of Prime Student at no cost and then pay 50% less than other Prime users ($6.49 per month or $59 per year) after the trial ends for four years or until your indicated graduation date — whichever comes first.

Prime is also discounted ($5.99 per month) for qualifying customers with an EBT or Medicaid card

Perhaps the biggest (and most valued) thing you will save with Prime is time. With same-day delivery, Prime members can get millions of items in 47 metropolitan areas.

And if you find yourself waiting in lines for new video game releases, you’ll save even more with free release-date delivery on new video games, books, music, and movies if you can wait until 7 p.m. day-of for delivery.

In select cities, you can even enable Amazon Key in-home delivery, so you don’t even need to be home to bring your packages indoors. It’s a secure in-home delivery on millions of eligible items. It’s possible with the Amazon Key Home Kit ($219.99), which can also be used normally to schedule home access for guests, friends, and family. Eligible shoppers can also get packages delivered to their garage or car when it’s parked in a publicly accessible area.

Though it may be easy to write Amazon Prime off as another frivolous subscription cost, being a member is full of perks and benefits that in the end can save you money.

For those that are EBT or Medicaid cardholders, you can sign up for a Prime Membership at 50% off, bringing the rate down from $12.99 per month (or $119 per year) to $5.99 per month for qualified users. For a membership that includes a streaming service, same-day grocery delivery, two-day shipping, and Amazon Prime Day 2021 access on June 21, that’s a steal.

If you are ineligible for the EBT or Medicaid cardholder discount, another way to save on membership is to sign up for Amazon Prime Student if you have an active .edu email address.

The best Amazon Prime benefits

In addition to free next-day or two-day shipping on millions of items, Amazon Prime can you save money on essentials like groceries, diapers, and baby food – not to mention trips to the store. It’s also worth noting that Amazon now accepts SNAP EBT on qualifying grocery items.

With access to a massive library of TV shows, movies, and original content through Prime Video, membership can also help you cut the cord if you’re still paying for cable or satellite TV. The cost of Prime with all of its features also matches that of other major streaming services alone.

Amazon Prime Day 2021, Amazon’s big two-day sale is another major benefit of having Amazon Prime. Members have exclusive access to thousands of exclusive deals, many of which are just as good or better than Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.

Amazon Prime Day 2021 deals happened on June 21 and 22 this year. It was an event of equally grand scale compared to previous years, filled with rare, short-lived sales on popular items including streaming devices, smart home speakers and displays, robot vacuums, and more.

If you’d like to give Amazon Prime and its many benefits a try before committing to the monthly fee, now is a great time to sign up for a trial.

You can use it for groceries with AmazonFresh, take advantage of free two-day shipping on tons of products, and get exclusive deals during Amazon’s annual Prime Day sale.

But, if you want to catch a new film or TV show, one of the best membership perks is definitely Amazon’s streaming service: Prime Video.

Prime Video features thousands of popular shows and movies, including original films like “Coming 2 America” and “The Tomorrow War,” as well as exclusive shows like “The Boys.”

In addition to its large library of on-demand content, Prime Video includes Prime Video Channels. This feature lets you add streaming access to other networks and services for an extra monthly fee. Prime Video also offers a selection of live sports, including the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football”.

If you’re looking for a way to get the most out of your Amazon Prime membership, here’s how you can start watching Prime Video today.

What is Prime Video?

Prime Video is an on-demand streaming service that’s included in your Amazon Prime membership. If you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can also sign up for Prime Video on its own.

You can watch thousands of titles on Prime Video, including many award-winning movies, original programs, and critically acclaimed original TV series.

The streaming service has roughly 24,000 movies and over 2,100 shows to choose from. You can also rent or buy additional movies and TV episodes not included with your subscription, and add over 100 premium channels with Prime Video Channels.

How much does Prime Video cost?

Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership for $13 a month or $119 a year. If you’re not interested in any of Amazon Prime’s other perks, you can sign up for Prime Video on its own for $9 a month.

EBT and Medicaid cardholders can qualify to receive a discounted Amazon Prime rate of $6 a month.

Can I try Prime Video for free?

New members can get a free trial of Amazon Prime – which includes Prime Video – for 30 days. That’s one of the longest free trial periods you can get for any streaming service. College students get an even longer trial and can claim six months of the service for free.

After the trial period, you can continue paying the regular rate or cancel your plan. You’ll need to cancel your subscription before the end of the trial in order to avoid paying for your next month.

What devices can I use to watch Prime Video?

You can watch Prime Video on your web browser, iOS and Android devices, and more. Here’s a list of devices compatible with Prime Video:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Internet Explorer
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari
  • Opera
  • Android
  • iOs (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  • Chromecast
  • Roku
  • Comcast X1
  • Cox Contour
  • Dish Network
  • Nvidia Shield
  • Oculus
  • TiVo
  • Apple TVs
  • Sony smart TVs
  • Samsung smart TVs
  • Panasonic smart TVs
  • LG smart TVs
  • Vizio smart TVs
  • Hisense smart TVs
  • Philips smart TVs
  • Sharp smart TVs
  • JVC smart TVs
  • TCL smart TVs
  • Konka smart TVs
  • Insignia smart TVs
  • Skyworth smart TVs
  • Haier smart TVs
  • Amazon Fire TVs
  • Amazon Fire Tablet
  • Amazon Echo
  • PlayStation consoles (3, 4, and 5)
  • Microsoft Xbox Series (Series X, Series S, One, 360)
  • Blu-ray players (LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony)

How does Prime Video compare to other streaming services?

Prime Video‘s cost falls somewhere in the middle of the pack compared to other popular streaming services, like HBO Max ($15 a month) and Peacock (as low as $5 a month). Its standalone price is essentially the same as a basic Netflix plan ($9 a month), although that Netflix option is limited to standard definition while Prime Video offers up to 4K streaming at no extra cost.

Unlike competitors’ streaming services, Prime Video is the only one you can get as part of an Amazon Prime membership. If you frequently have Amazon items shipped to your home or want free delivery on grocery orders over $50, the addition of Amazon Prime for $4 more a month is a no brainer.

Does Prime Video support 4K and HDR?

Prime Video supports a number of advanced video and audio formats, including high dynamic range (HDR), 4K Ultra HD, and Dolby Atmos.

All HDR titles use the HDR10 and HDR10+ formats. Another HDR format, Dolby Vision, is also supported on a select number of titles.

When it comes to advanced audio, Prime Video supports Dolby Atmos on some shows and movies, but the selection is nowhere near as big as it is on Netflix or Disney Plus. The info page for each title typically reveals whether it supports audio formats like Dolby Atmos.

You should check your devices first to see if your video and audio gear will play Prime Video content in these advanced formats.

What shows and movies are on Prime Video?

Prime Video has a wide range of series and films. This includes a number of exclusive 2021 Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated movies like “Sound of Metal” and “One Night In Miami…,” as well as new releases such as the Amazon original “The Tomorrow War.”

The service isn’t short of shows, either, including popular originals like “The Boys” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Prime Video also features children’s shows like “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” based on the book of the same name.

Outside of original content, the streaming service includes a rotating library of hits from the past – like “Gladiator” and “Back to the Future” – along with the option to pay extra for Prime Video “cinema” releases that are still playing in theaters.

The streaming service is also making ground in the sports market. In March, the National Football League announced a 10-year deal that gives Prime Video the exclusive rights to air its “Thursday Night Football” games starting in 2022.

What does Amazon’s purchase of MGM mean for Prime Video?

Amazon struck an $8.45 billion deal to acquire MGM in May 2021. The deal could have a big impact on what Prime Video subscribers get to watch.

MGM is home to a number of popular franchises including Rocky, James Bond, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Real Housewives,” and more. In total, the studio has made over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows, according to a press release.

Many existing MGM titles and new entries in the studio’s franchises could now become a part of Prime Video’s library. But, it’s not as straightforward as all MGM titles leaving other streaming services to head to Amazon.

For instance, WarnerMedia and Turner Broadcasting have a hold on the subscription streaming rights to MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and all movies before 1986. Some of these titles are already available to watch on Amazon, but only if you pay extra to rent or buy them. If Amazon wants these films included with Prime Video, it will have to make a separate deal.

It’s also unclear when MGM titles will make their way to Prime Video. As one Citigroup analyst told Barron’s, the titles would “likely” move to the streaming service “over time.” There are also other parties that still have input concerning future MGM releases, such as Eon Productions’ creative control over decisions regarding future James Bond titles.

Upcoming movies that have already been announced for other streaming services, like “No Time to Die” and “Creed III,” should still make their way to Epix and Paramount Plus first thanks to existing deals.

Your Whole Foods delivery order is getting about $10 more expensive if you live in one of these 6 cities

whole foods prime delivery amazon
  • Amazon plans to add a $9.95 fee to Whole Foods grocery deliveries through Prime in some markets.
  • Prime members across six US markets have been informed of the new fee.
  • The company said the service charge will help offset operating costs.
  • See more stories on Insider’s business page.

Amazon is adding on a $9.95 delivery fee to Prime orders of Whole Foods’ items across six US markets.

A Whole Foods spokesperson told Insider the fee will be rolled out in the greater Detroit, Boston, and Chicago areas, as well as in Portland, Maine, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Providence, Rhode Island.

In a notice sent to shoppers last week, the grocery chain said the additional charge would help cover operating costs for delivery orders, but would not apply to grocery pickups, Bloomberg first reported.

The spokesperson told Insider the fee is part of a pilot program. It will help cover delivery logistics and allow the chain to avoid raising prices on its products.

Since the onset of the pandemic, grocery services like Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods delivery have become increasingly popular as more customers look to social distance. But, as the cost of goods continues to rise with increased shipping costs, as well as product and labor shortages, the new fee indicates Amazon may not be immune to inflation.
